Course structure

1 course, 6 weeks, 6 unitsThis is an e-learning online course that consists of a combination of self-paced theory sessions where you can learn at your own time, and is combined with collaborative activities such as live webinars, interactive presentations, video clips by leading experts in food and nutrition security, and other relevant learning materials. On average, delegates will need to commit to 3-5 hours per week to the course content in order to complete the course successfully.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course, delegates will be able to:

• Understand food and nutrition security concepts and complexity

• Apply food security indicators evaluation methods• Learn about the objective tree logical framework

approaches to food and nutrition security programmes• Map a basic value chain and understand the value of the

commercialisation of value chains• Using consumer behaviour as a tool to create more

sustainable food systems• Understand the tools and methods used to analyse food

security• Carry out an assessment of household food security• Understand the policies associated with food and

nutrition security• Contribute to building capacity required across research

and policy to tackle this multi-faceted challenge, and help avoid the policy paralysis which in some countries led to little or no progress towards addressing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

Who should enrol?

This course is most relevant for graduates, post-graduate students, professionals, decision makers, analysts, policy makers, advisors, project managers, coordinators and officers involved in the design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of food and nutrition security programmes in the areas of nutrition, food security, food systems, food economics, public health nutrition, agriculture extension, consumer and food science.

Course fees

R8 500.00 per delegate (VAT incl.)Course fees covers tuition fees, course material, assessments and certification upon completion of the course. The number of delegates is capped, and a limited number of scholarships is available for those who apply before 1 October 2021.Course fees must be paid in full 14 days prior to course start dates. Proof of payment can be submitted to [email protected].

Scholarships

A limited number of scholarships is available for candidates that are eligible and apply before 1 October 2021. Applicants need to apply online by clicking here: ARUA Centre of Excellence in Sustainable Food Systems: ARUA-SFS. Scholarships cover tuition fees, course materials, access to Blackboard Learn (ClickUP), assessments and certification. Please note that only tuition fees are covered and that no daily subsistence allowance (DSA) will be provided. No travel expenses will be required to attend this course.

Eligibility criteria:• Candidates must be a permanent resident from an African

country and must submit proof of residency/ID/passport copy with application

• Candidates must submit a personal statement (max 500 words) and motivate their reasons for wishing to undertake this course

• Candidates must be fluent in English• Candidates must at least have a Bachelor degree in a

relevant discipline. See admission requirements for more information.

Admission requirements

Learning assumed to be in place: Bachelor degree in either nutrition, epidemiology, food or agricultural science and economics or related field.
