Admission requirements of the Diploma in Business Management• The minimum admission requirement is a National Senior Certificate (NSC) with a minimum of 30-39% in the

language of learning and teaching of the institution (in our case it is English) • PLUS an achievement rating of 3, 40-49% or better in 4 designated and/or recognised subjects.• Recommended (but not compulsory) subjects: This could include accounting, business studies or Computer

Application Technology (CAT).• Note: If the Language of Learning (in our case English) is between 40-49% then this will count towards 1 (one) of

your designated subjects. You will therefore then only require 3 additional designated and/or recognised subjects with an achievement rating of 3, (40-49%)

OVERVIEW OF THE QUALIFICATION

CURRICULUM OUTLINE

DIPLOMA IN BUSINESS MANAGEMENT

The business sector in South Africa has a great demand for people who can combine ideas and skills to further innovation and enterprise. The programme has a strong financial and managerial approach, thus developing the quantitative abilities of the student. Students will therefore develop strong management and financial decision-making skills that are needed not only in South Africa but also in international markets.

Computer technology is very important in any business environment today. Students will be equipped with the latest computer skills and knowledge that includes software programs like Pastel Accounting and Pastel Payroll.

MODULE DESCRIPTIONS

Module 1: Accounting for financial decision-making

This module serves as a foundation to more advanced studies in bookkeeping and accounting. It provides the student with an orientation to core concepts, principles and processes, starting with a brief revisit to the different types of businesses combined with the basic concepts and principles of financial accounting. Attention is paid to source documents and banking procedures, the double-entry system, payment and receipt transactions, credit sales and purchase transactions, and elementary year-end procedures.

Module 2: Business Communication

This module will equip students with the necessary knowledge and skills to understand and apply key concepts in effective verbal and non-verbal communication within the business work environment. Attention is paid to the nature and dimensions of verbal and non-verbal communication, as well as internal and external communication within organisational structures.

Module 3: Entrepreneurship

This module introduces the student to the entrepreneurial world and creates a platform for more advanced studies in this field. Students will explore the unique characteristics of the ‘entrepreneur’ as an individual with limited resources who seizes opportunities to develop new products and services that satisfy the multiple needs of consumers. Specific techniques for releasing creativity in the development and growth of new business ventures will be presented in practical terms. The student will explore the characteristics of a good opportunity in order to ensure that the feasibility and viability of an idea in the marketplace. Other topics that will be discussed include the various forms of entities to choose from when starting a business venture, as well as the various means of protecting the entrepreneur’s intellectual property. This module finally introduces the student to the requirements of a structured ‘mini-business plan.’

Module 4: Fundamentals of Economics

The objective of this module is to introduce students to introductory concepts and practices in micro and macro economics. Introduction to economics covers the basics of economics, economic systems and micro economic theory. This module also covers the basics of macro economic theory, such as economic growth, unemployment, inflation, interest rates, the national budget and international trade.

Module 5: Business Management

This module introduces the student to key processes for effective business management. Attention is paid to the underpinning theory and concepts of business management, management principles, and related processes, aspects of functional management with integration with contemporary management issues such as globalisation, knowledge management and productivity.

Module 6: Business Marketing

This module introduces students to the fundamental concepts and principles that underpin the marketing process. In particular, it gives a concise overview of contemporary marketing, and examines the role and practice of marketing within the changing business environment. Topics such as the marketing process, segmentation, targeting and positioning and the extended marketing mix are also covered.

Module 7: Administrative Management

This module equips the student with knowledge about information management techniques. It enables students to manage the information needs of the organisation, so that timely, relevant and accurate information is available to managers at all levels. Attention is paid to the role and support functions of administrative management within an organisation, information systems and the management of information, the office environment, and visual presentation of information.

Module 1: EntrepreneurshipVentures & Venturing

This module builds on the knowledge acquired in Entrepreneurship in year one, and prepares students that prefer the route of potential owners of a business enterprise. This module will thus equip the student with an in-depth understand-ing of requirements to ensure success in establishing and running a new business venture. The student will develop the ability to evaluate different entrepreneurial business plans, using critical thinking skills such as analysis and evaluation combined with predetermined evaluation criteria.

Module 2: Financial Management

Unit A: Financial Management

This module builds on Accounting for Financial Decision-Making in year one. Attention is paid to financial institutions, securities, markets, interest rates, taxes and dividends, time value of money, as well as short term financial decisions.

Unit B: Information Administration Systems / Pastel Accounting Intermediate

It equips the student with knowledge regarding the application of computerised accounting systems. Attention is paid to PC utilities to perform accounting tasks, create customer and supplier accounts, create and operate inventories, process orders, record and process invoices.

Module 3: Organisational Behaviour

This module equips the student with knowledge regarding the complex context in which organisations in South Africans operate. Attention is paid to organisational structure and culture, common approaches to management and leadership, motivational theories and working with others, including teamwork and group dynamics. Module 4: Business Management Global Business

This module provides candidates with the underpinning knowledge of business strategy from a global perspective. It deals extensively with the practicalities of global business and the importance of developing a global mind-set, global strategies and structures, and how to manage a global business operation.

Subject 5: Project Management

This module will help the student to develop an understanding of the principles of project management and its application to projects in business management. Attention is paid to the project lifecycle approach to enable students to appreciate an effective integrated functioning system.

Module 6: Marketing Planning

This module equips the student with knowledge of contextual issues related to marketing management. The student will develop an understanding of the complex and diverse environment of marketing by focusing on relationship marketing, marketing in non-traditional contexts, the extended marketing mix in the service sector as well as ethics and social responsibility in marketing context.

Module 8: Administrative Management

The aim of this module is to enable students to manage the information needs of the organisation so that timely, relevant and accurate information is available to managers at all levels to aid decision making. It also equips the student with knowledge and insights into information management, productivity, problem solving and decision-making, managing cultural diversity as well as business ethics.

Module 1: Financial Management Theory / Pastel Advanced / Pastel Payroll

This module introduces students to the financial management of businesses. Attention is paid to long term financial management decisions, international managerial finance, mergers and joint ventures and business failures. Students are equipped with knowledge of advanced computerised accounting systems and the computerised payroll system. This includes creating transactions, creating bank and branch codes, pay points, job and cost center codes, and creating employee data and processing of payslips and advanced functions in the general ledger and advanced customer functions.

Module 2: Strategic Management

This module enables students to understand strategic analysis, choice and the implementation structure. It equips the student with knowledge to apply and evaluate analytical tools in the development of strategic plans and strategies. An organisation needs a reference point for decision making, that can be provided by the strategy and the planning process involved in designing the strategy.

Module 3: Logistics & Supply Chain Management

Logistics, and the closely related concept of supply chain management (SCM), form an integral part of business strategy, and thus business management. This module provides students with an understanding of the elements of integrated business logistics and the application of logistics principles to supply chain management that will assist in management decision-making.

This module focuses on the management of activities involved in the flow of materials, products and information from the point of origin through the supply chain to the point of consumption. Students will learn about the management of sourcing and procurement, transportation, warehouse and facilities, inventory, distribution, reverse logistics and customer service. Students will understand the interconnectedness of business units and organisations within the supply chain and will learn to analyse the different logistic strategies and tools commonly used for design and management of the supply chain.

It furthermore equips students with an understanding of contemporary issues in logistics management that are needed for organisations to gain a competitive advantage. This includes a focus on global logistics, logistic challenges that arise with e-commerce and the information systems that are used to identify and monitor products in the supply chain.

Module 4: Business Legal Practice

This module will equip the student with knowledge regarding a variety of legal issues applicable to business management. It sets the foundation for business management practice that complies with relevant laws of the country. Attention is paid to the legal system in South Africa, the Law of Contract (including various types of contracts and related formalities), the legal implications of the various forms of business entities (with specific reference to the Companies Act 71 of 2008). This module will also equip the student to deal with labour related matters as a manager in the workplace. Alternative dispute resolution methods will also be discussed as an alternative to litigation in resolving issues in the business world. Other important legislation to be discussed include the National Credit Act 34 of 2005, as well as the Consumer Protection Act 68 of 2008. Lastly, this module equips the student with knowledge with regards to insolvency and the legal implications thereof on individuals and business entities.

Module 5: Work-integrated Learning

Work-integrated learning (also called internship or professional practicum) happens during the student’s final year of study. It involves learning through placement at a company for the purpose of gaining hands-on experience through executing actual tasks and assignments (e.g. business environment).

Work-integrated learning is structured around a clear purpose, performance (outcome) targets and procedures in collaboration with the employer and lecturer(s) concerned. It provides students with an opportunity to acquire first-hand experience of the world of work in the industry concerned. Students should acquire an in-depth knowledge of workplace practices and a broad knowledge and understanding of how the host organisation operates. They should develop competencies that are impossible or highly unlikely in the classroom environment, for instance the ability to deal with challenges and problems within context of the workplace itself. They will also develop the ability to integrate knowledge and skills across all programme modules at practical level.
