Experimental Courses: Fall 2020
ANTH 330. Global Christian Persecution. Christians are the single most widely persecuted religious group in the world who continue to be killed, tortured, imprisoned, exiled, and to see their property destroyed from North Korea to Nigeria, China to Egypt, and Pakistan to Indonesia.
This course covers the scope and nature of the global persecution of Christians with special reference to 10/40 window countries. It examines the stories of those who are persecuted for their Christian faith by focusing on their societies, their cultures, and the religious and political context of their countries. The course informs, equips and mobilizes Christians to understand the causes of persecution, to stand in solidarity with the persecuted church, and to develop lines of response to address the systematic persecution of Christians, whose faith radiates the love of Jesus in suffering.
The course is relevant to all those who are interested in the persecuted church, human rights, religious freedom, social justice, and cross-cultural work. (2 cr.)
ART 320. Screenwriting and Producing. This course immerses students into the world of producing for the screen. The class focuses on analyzing narrative stories and pre-production for screen. (4 cr.)
COMM 320. Preaching as Rhetorical Practice. This course introduces students to the theological rationale for preaching, the rhetorical skills and theories useful for sermon development, and the ethical demands of public ministry. Students will develop and deliver narrative, expositional, and thematic sermons. Prerequisites: Oral Competency (COMM 101, 201, 252, or test) and two BITH courses (OT, NT, or substitutes); or permission of instructors. (4 cr.)
ENGL 230. Introduction to the Inklings. This course provides a foundation for the study of seven British authors who blended intellect, imagination and faith: C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkien, Dorothy L. Sayers, George MacDonald, G. K. Chesterton, Owen Barfield, and Charles Williams. The course will focus on the lives and works of these authors in the context of their historical moment and the genres in which they were so accomplished—fiction, drama, memoir, and theological reflection. Students will make extensive use of the Marion E. Wade Center, the world’s pre-eminent archive and study center for these seven authors. Students will be encouraged to develop their own topics and programs of study for exploring the legacy of seven authors who are acknowledged as classics even while remaining surprisingly contemporary. (4 cr.)
PHYS 380. Machine Learning and Computer Aided Diagnosis in Medical Imaging. This course will teach students about the principles of machine learning as applied to problems in medical physics. Students will learn about different medical imaging modalities, the extraction of features from the images, and classification methods and metrics, such as receiver operating characteristic curve analysis. Prerequisite: PHYS 222 or PHYS 232 (2 cr.)
