The certificate in counselling skills course will introduce participants from the health professions to the approaches of Rogers and Egan which can be used effectively in different work contexts. The course is accredited and recognised by the Institute for Complementary Medicine. No previous knowledge required. The aim of this clinically orientated course is to develop practitioners’ skills in the examination and treatment of peripheral musculoskeletal syndromes. Its contents will be related to the Maitland approach to the mobilisation of peripheral joints and will include soft tissue techniques, management of sports injuries, and observations from the study of traditional Chinese medicine. The emphasis will be on lecture/demonstration with ample opportunity for closely supervised practical sessions. In addition there will be presentation of common case history (syndrome) to relate treatment to the patients’ presenting problems. The course duration is over two weekends amounting to at least 20 teaching hours. A course handbook will be supplied. This is a basic course in orthopaedic medicine, based on the teaching of Dr J Cyriax, for doctors and physiotherapists only, given by Stephanie Saunders MCSP and Fellows of the Society of Orthopaedic Medicine and accredited by the Society. Participants will learn how to examine the moving parts of the body and how to treat the common lesions of the musculoskeletal system, using massage, mobilisation and injection techniques. 50% of course time is allocated to hands-on practical sessions in small groups.
