Rehab Hair Salon of Coventrybrings a very special event to Masion Bar.

The charity hair and fashion show will be in aid of Birmingham Childrens Hospital Heart Unit.

After the success of the show last year, which raised over £600 for the NSPCC. Rehab, Garb and Maison have teamed up again to bring an event that blends fashion, beauty and elegance to raise awareness for a great cause.

Mum - Jane and Dad - Paul are parents of Amelie, Libby and Lara. Their daughter is the inspiration for the March show and here is Lara’s story.

Our 3rd daughter Lara was born in May 2007 with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome. This basically means she has only half a functioning heart and without surgery at Birmingham Children’s Hospital, Lara would not have survived. Lara’s first few years have been full of challenges.

Lara is now doing really well, catching up developmentally and eating normally. We have Birmingham Children’s Hospital to thank for this!

The aim of the Heart Unit Appeal is to extend the cardiac unit and create a new “hybrid” theatre, the first of its kind in the UK. Here surgeons will be able to carry out surgical and keyhole procedures simultaneously, thus, reducing the number of operations that children may need. The money raised will also provide more, much needed, beds on Intensive Care.

Hi Louis, heard you have been busy what you been up to?Yea, I’m going down to London tomorrow to scout out some clubs. I’m looking at taking the brand further a �ield for touring. Not anything like I do here once a month though as I’m Coventry based - but I’m looking at touring this year. hopefully London, Manchester, Leicester and Ibiza, so I’m going down to London to speak to some of the clubs just to weigh up the options’Sounds good, you’re not leaving Coventry are you?No, I’m sticking to my roots buddy I’d miss you all too much if I left That’s good to hear. So tell us a little bit about yourself, how did you come to be a DJ and promoter?Well basically, on a music level, I’m told by my mum that from the age of 2 or 3 I was always walking around with headphones and her records under my arm and I became somewhat obsessed with different styles of music as I was growing up. When I was old enough to buy my �irst few albums I was into the like of Ministry of Sound - back in the 90’s, it just came from there. There were people I was taking note of Like Ferry Corston to maybe Tall Paul even when Boy George featured on a couple of the Annual Albums. My passion for this music grew from there. The Ministry of Sounds Albums have always been around and the brand was massive and with clubs down in London, I used to think to myself that one day I’d love to be on one of those albums.So that was the dream was it?Absolutely that was the dream. It was a massive milestone for me when last year I was included on the MoS Twisted Disco album 2010, so yea that was great for me. Since then its set the ball rolling and things seems to have gone from strength to strength. The track “Zombie” they took on from me was sort of Housey House not quite Funky House. There were some big names on that album like Audio Bullies, Freddie le Grand. So from there I changed my style a little bit because a lot of the once well respected brands kind of sold out and went commercial, with a lot ending up packed with cheese now. So I started to look into that niche for myself, a fresh challenge, so I’ve moved towards a style that was

in�luenced by techno house I would say best describes it – which kind of puts me in a place where I can have my identity and it ties in nicely with the events. When I put them on in Coventry I try to bring something a bit different not something you’ll hear all the time. It’s that underground edge that I enjoy playing.So that’s where you think something you won’t hear every day has a bit more pull for your Proud Nights?Yea, I mean if you asked sort of 90% of the people that come to the parties what the difference is between the various types of house music they probably wouldn’t care a great deal, it’s more about the night having good entertainment and music that is fairly exclusive,along with them just generally having a good time. And that’s what “Proud” is, it’s about feeling good about yourself having a good time in general and not feeling out of place or feeling like you have to be here because its popular, but being here cause you want to and enjoy what we’re bringing to a night. So it’s almost back to what you �irst enjoyed with music and now you’re bringing that into your events?That’s right I mean a lot of the mainstream has been dictated by money now and if MoS saw the chance then in business terms it makes sense for them to go with popularity instead of the traditional style that got them there. You see artists like David Guetta who has gone for a lot more commercial and chart tracks and that’s up to them, but I can’t see me doing that.Do you think that by them going down that line and releasing these tracks it gives them the �inancial stability to re enforce their roots later on?It could happen, and I’ve noticed it with Eric Prydz, but he seems to be one in a million. He came through brought out a couple of massive chart tracks and then went back to what got him there. But a lot of artists sell out and stay out – maybe they get sucked in to the celebrity lifestyle and the money side of things. Each to their own, they’re obviously making a lot of people happy because they sell a lot of records and sell out their concerts, they must be doing what they feel is best for themselves.Could it be that their own style has evolved in to something they prefer as opposed to selling out?

Proud Events are a well-known night in Coventry. So who better to speak to then the man behind it all?Louis Proud is a Coventry DJ and all round music lover. Coventry Nightlife managed to get him to take a moment from his busy career to talk us through how it all came to be – and more importantly where it’s going next.

Maybe a bit of both, as I say people see things through theirown eyes.Let’s go back to David Guetta, maybethere were things he was seeing in the scenethat he wasn’t enjoying and was given anopportunity to become something on a global scale. Personally I always thought that he was the pop house style, that euro style – so this could be his natural progression in music. He was known as a House name and in the next breathe he’s a major pop idol, to me that dilutes what the real sort of House music is about. It’s not about that celebrity life and money or keeping the general public masses happy, it’s about the people that enjoy that speci�ic genre of music for what it is and keeping it that way.Do you think that people will only listen to more recent “House” DJs that have burst on to the commer-cial scene and not look at their back catalogue? Which may in turn change people’s interpretation of House music classing the newer sound as House?There is a bit of a divide when I speak to people in the industry. Some people think that it has done wonders for the House scene because now it’s a globally recognised sound and there are massive House albums. But then there is the other side who say that people have jumped on the band wagon and only see the celebrity side, it’s one of those issues with a few grey areas and strong opinions.OK that’s great; we could talk for hours but let’s get back to more about you for the guys reading. What is your stand out track of all time?There was a track I used to have on repeat on the MoS Annual album I mentioned earlier it was Todd Toby “Something Going On” it was a certain remix though, a great track. But as I started getting a bit older I started collecting Helter Skelter too, I’ve not always been in to house. I started DJing Trance music when I �irst got my vinyl decks at 18.Wow wouldn’t have guessed that so your music has taken on in�luences from various different genres!IndeedSo how long have your “Proud” events been going now?Well the Proud Sound brand in general has been going for 3 years now since about January 2008. The “proud” events though have been going since June 2010 so only a few months. It’s really taken off well for us and we get a lot people who love coming to add to the atmosphere and make the events what they are. It’s nice that were growing so well and lots of people are aware of us. It’s very gratifying on a personal level because of all the hard work I had to put in to build the brand and it’s been great to see people enjoy it. Now were hoping we keep going and growing and it’s always great on the label to promote other artists who are coming through and making some good music.

Is there anyone we should be looking out for coming through on your label?Without a doubt we have some great artists coming through we have James Kininmonth and Format4 who are going to be ones to look out for this yearYou’re lucky in the sense you get to have Maison as a location for your eventsYeah I am it’s a great venue, you see some places and not just in this city but locations that allow other promoters in and the nights aren’t very good and it affects how people see a location. Maison have kept that exclusivity they know what they want as a team here and they are consistent on what style of nights they hold and the clients that it brings. That’s the difference between good and bad management. It’s probably the best venue I have worked with cause they are excited about the events we have in place. Even down to the door team who have a feel for the people that are going to appreciate the kind of music were playing, all of that adds to the feel of a night. I have to mention actually the sort of pretentious image that people might have, but here there is a blend of fun people looking for a good night it’s a really good mixSo what next for Louis Proud, we know what you managed to do in 9 months, where are you going to be next?Well I would say if I had to choose and take in�luence from anyone in the scene at the minute it would be Mark Knight of “Toolroom”. The way he built his own pro�ile alongside a branding and brought through some amazing acts like Funkagenda to his night “Tool Room Imprint”. He’s really established himself in London and I want to do that in Coventry. People may laugh but this is my home town and we’re still a big city. We love music here too and it’s good to see other nights doing well in the city so we can build the nightlife here again.So we need more nightlife? Just as well there is a mag for that!Yea absolutely what you guys are doing is massive if you look at other cities like Manches-ter, they have the local papers telling people about the cities events a lot, where as our papers don’t do it enough, so to have guys like Coventry Nightlife Mag is amazing for the night life scene so big love =)So we know you have a young family, do they listen to your music?Yeah it’s lovely, my oldest is obsessed with music, if he hears something that sounds similar to my work its “daddy’s music” which is cute, but he can generally pick out one of my own from a mile away bless. A few of the tracks I made I dedicated to him, so now he thinks every track I produce is dedicated to him!!! haha
