Editorial Welcome to the New Year and to our January edition. Firstly, a fond farewell to Lesley and Phil who are leaving the area. Lesley has done a lot of work for our community over the years, both in helping to shape our lovely magazine and working on the Parish Council. We thank her and wish her well for the future.

Volunteering seems to be a theme in this issue and many things that we take for granted would not happen without it. It may be worth a thought – could you also help to maintain or even improve some small aspect of our lives? It is good to see ‘Zing Walks’ are encouraging us all to be healthier, happier and more involved in local life.

The ‘Wassail’ on January 7th will be well worth a visit. It is part of our West Country history celebrating the seasons in a different way.

Finally, how exciting the school must have looked before Christmas and how spectacular the Angels look.

We wish you all a Happy New Year.

Christmas Quiz What is a penguin’s favourite relative?

How many segments are there in a Terrys Chocolate Orange?

What colour is water?

These are three of the questions posed at the Twinning Association’s annual Fun Quiz, which took place in the Church Rooms on Friday 9 December. The evening also involved mince pies, mulled cider, a ploughman’s supper and considerable mirth. “The Flintstones” ran out winners, “Comfortably Numb” were the runners-up.

£80 was raised for the charity Crisis.

Notes from Izzy Silvester

In order to feel happy and mentally positive, we need to look after our bodies, because our emotions, mental state and bodies are all related to one another. This means feeding ourselves good food, taking an adequate amount of exercise, and engaging in other activities that make us feel happy and connected to the world.

Locally there are lots of opportunities to join in with activities, some of which I have listed below. I hope you will find something of interest. If nothing there takes your fancy, or you find yourself struggling for transport to get to these activities, do get in touch and I would be happy to discuss what other options are out there.

Wassail

Middle English wæs hæl, literally 'good health' or 'be you healthy’.

The ancient rite of wassailing trees was well known in Devonshire, Somerset, Herefordshire and in other parts of the West Country of England. It generally took place on Twelfth Night (January 5th), or sometimes on 17th January, known as Old Twelfth Night. Farmers and their families would feast on hot cakes and cider, then they would go into the orchard with more "supplies."

“Here we come a wassailing Among the leaves so green, Here we come a wandering So fair to be seen.”

Cider-soaked toast/cake was laid in the forks of trees and cider splashed onto the roots. The men fired their guns into the tree and banged on pots and pans while the rest of the people sang a special "Wassail Song." This custom was said to ward off bad spirits from the orchard and encourage the good spirits to provide a bountiful crop for the following year.

Come and join in the Wassail in Shurton on

Saturday 7th Jan 2017

Bince and Matthew

reporters for this month’s news

Sparkling Stars and Christmas Cards December has been a busy month as most of the classes have been involved in a lot of Christmas related activities.

Oak Class pupils and their teacher, Miss May, have been informing us about all of the activities they have been doing. For example, they have made paper chains and bunting. These have been hung from wall-to-wall across the classroom and look very merry.

One corner of the classroom has been turned into a Christmas grotto. The children can go into the grotto and lie down to look up at the stars.

In another corner of the classroom, they have s e t u p a s m a l l Christmas tree. The teacher has wrapped up short Christmas stories to look l ike presents, and put them under the tree. Every day one child goes to the Christmas tree and opens one package, and then Miss May reads the story out to the whole class.

The children also had a fun time dressing up as elves and wrapping up presents.

In Maths, they have been doing their number bonds to 10, and since it is nearly Christmas they have been counting reindeer.

Hazel Class have been involved in lots of Christmas activities. They are writing a letter to Santa.

“We are using the past, present and future in a letter, and we need to highlight the tenses,” said William M (Yr 3)

Miss Day said, “In Maths, Hazel Class have been developing their reasoning and problem solving skills with addition and subtraction.”

Willow Class pupils in Literacy have been learning about the well-known poem, “The Highwayman”.

In Maths, the pupils have been doing addition and subtraction using a slightly different method than before. The ‘part-part-whole’ method comes from Singapore maths.

The pupils have been writing up a traditional poem for Christmas which is called, “’Twas the night before Christmas”. The pupils want to read it out to parents on the very last day of term.

They have also made 5-point origami stars, Santa Claus Christmas cards and some French cards as well.

We Three Kings This is one of the most popular carols out of all the carols that the school will be singing at their Carol service. All the pupils have been busy practising for this Nativity-Carol service which takes place at St Andrew’s Church on Monday 12th December. They have all had fun practising with Mr Chetland.

Everyone in Willow Class and Hazel Class have a spoken part. Willow Class pupils are learning their parts off by heart. Oak Class pupils are acting out the nativity story as the older pupils sing the carols and read or say their parts.

“The Heavenly Host” - pupils from Oak Class rehearsing for the Carol Concert.

The Carol Concert in the Church was wonderful: the children’s singing of the traditional carols and readings (most of which were spoken rather than read) were extremely impressive - well done!

It was lovely seeing the Church so full, thank you parents and friends for coming and taking part in the concert with the school.

Also, thank-you to the Chetland family for their involvement in the concert. A special thank you to Mr Chetland for organising the concert, rehearsing with the school, and playing the organ and piano in the church.

“Ourselves” Tina Miller reported that this has been Pre-school’s topic this half term.

The children have labelled the parts of the body, including some parts that cannot be seen, such as the brain, the heart and the lungs. The children have also talked about the jobs these parts do within the body.

Self-portraits, whilst looking in a mirror, by Pre-school pupils

The Pre-school children have also been involved with Christmas activities. To help develop their fine-motor skills (essential for early writing) they have been making paper chains and threading popcorn.

The Christingle Service on Friday 16th December, in the Church, will end the term for the Pre-school and the school children.

Behind You! On 8th December the whole of Stogursey Primary School went for a Christmas trip to the pantomime. When they arrived at the Tacci Morris Centre, they were greeted by two other schools (Selwor thy and West Buckland). Everybody was very excited to be watching ‘Aladdin’.

“My favourite part was when everyone got wet,” said Jimi (Yr 5).

“I liked the part when the Police crashed into each other on scooters,” said Bronte.

The characters were Wishy Washy, Widow Twankey, Aladdin, Abanazar (AKA ‘Have a Banana’ as Widow Twankey called him) Jasmine, The Genie, the Slave of the Ring and the Emperor.

The pupils arrived back at school after their amazing experience at the Pantomime at 6pm.

Thank you Bince and Matthew for your reports about the activities taking place across the whole school and in the three classes.

Stogursey AFC Xmas Bingo

held on Sunday 11th December 2016

We had a very good turn out of players on a cold night.

With all your help, we raised a fantastic £800 on the night, the best we have ever done.

I want to say a big thank you to all of you because without you we could not do it.

I want to say a big thank you to all our sponsors who gave prizes and cash towards prizes.

Thank you to Allen and Martin for their support and running the bar.

But I save the biggest THANK YOU till last, for Tony and Liz Harris, because without them I could not do my job as fundraiser.

So THANK YOU ALL BIG TIME.

Mespilus germanica Medlar Jelly Assemble one-third firm medlars and two-thirds bletted medlars. Cover them with water, and simmer steadily until the fruit is soft. Strain off the liquid, then boil with sugar, a pound of sugar to a pint of liquid, until setting point is reached. Pot in small jars. Serve with game, lamb, and the meats that go well with tart fruit jellies.

Jane Grigson in her book, Jane Grigson’s Fruit Book, writes:

From its unmistakable and curious formation, the medlar has long been the happy target of jokes in much of Europe. The first ancient - and descriptive - English name of ‘openarse' tells you why: ‘gradually and politely it was superseded by the French-derived medlar’.

Away from the refinements of Parisian culture in the countryside, however, impoliteness flourished to match our own. ‘In some provinces it is called the cul de chien’ (dog’s arse) - from a French writer of 1833.

More decorously the medlar was appreciated for its medicinal quality. You took it against looseness, women ate it to prevent haemorrhages. A chemical analysis of 1939 showed that the medlar was the perfect regulator of the stomach and eased bloating. They also eased throat abscesses and fever.

VILLAGE AGENT Izzy Silvester the Village Agent introduced herself to the Parish Council and explained her role and aims. Her work includes supporting and assisting vulnerable and isolated people and directing them to funding that may make a difference to their lives. PRECEPT (BUDGET) FOR 2017/18 Councillors voted to increase the precept to £22,500 for the next financial year. This will mean that the average Band D tax payer cost has increased from £44.53 to £46.39 a rise of £1.86 (4.10%) per annum. We have included funds for fixed annual costs such as Closed Churchyard Grass Cutting & Maintenance, Insurance, Audit, Dog & Litter Bins, Clerk’s Salary and the Allotments. In addition, we have set aside funds to cover unexpected costs – our other responsibilities include St Andrew’s Well, the Bus Shelters and The Gravel.

LENGTHS-MAN SCHEME Tenders have been received by the Parish Council and members met to discuss the contents. An application will be made to the Hinkley C CIM fund in January.

COMMERICAL BUS SERVICE As reported last month, we have been working with affected parishes to seek alternative solutions. We have received a response to our letter from Secretary of State’s office, but it has not provided any answers to assist the parish. School bus suppliers responded to our request with costs of between £100 and £250 per day for a shopper bus service from Williton to Bridgwater. The options, feasibility and potential cost to the Parish Council were discussed at the meeting and council members agreed to support in principle a shopper service of £100

per journey. We are awaiting results of discussions from other parishes.

PARISH COUNCILLOR VACANCY We are now advertising for a councillor. Please look out for details on the Parish Notice Boards. The role of councillor is an interesting, varied and challenging one. We are looking for a committed and enthusiastic volunteer to join our ‘team’. If you would like further information, please contact the Clerk. Applications to be submitted to the Clerk by 24 January 2017.

FLOWER TUBS ON THE GRAVEL The old bulbs have been removed and new bulbs planted. We thank Chris and Jan Ford, Ian Elenor and Allan Searle for volunteering, your efforts are appreciated by all.

CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS Thank you to the volunteers (Martin Nurton, Allen Loveday, Ron Dyer, Derek Skeets, Chris Ford and Allan Searle) who put up the Christmas tree and decorations on The Gravel. Your help is very much appreciated - the area looks very colourful and suitably festive.

SEASON’S GREETINGS The Chairman and Councillors and I would like to take this opportunity to wish you and your families a very Happy Christmas and a happy, healthy and peaceful New Year. We thank you for your help and support over the past year, which has been a very busy one.

The next Parish Council meeting will be on TUESDAY 10 JANUARY 2017

I look forward to hearing from you on any issues you wish to discuss. My phone number is 01278 653824 or you can e-mail me at [email protected]
