Page 3: Cover page analysis

Masthead: It is a simple red font. The colour red is used to make the mast head look bold to attract attention since the colour red is a prominent colour that stands out, this is important because the masthead is one of the most important features of a magazine. It is also hidden behind the main image illuminating it's popularity and indicating that it is an easily recognised by the audience. The colour red also connotes confidence and can be associated with the models lipstick.

main cover line: The main cover line is written in a trendy font in huge letters to attract the audience and to differentiate between the other coverline fonts which are also black. The phrase ‘you're beautiful’ makes sense to the audience since it is associated with the model and what she is trying to advertise.

model credits: The model credits are in a slim black typography. Not very prominent but just enough to catch the consumer's attention.‘you have to rise above rejection’, is in a red to make it stand out since it gives the audience a brief gist of why there is so much emphasis on the model. This line can also be associated with the main cover line creating self esteem and hope.

cover lines: cover lines are brief descriptions underneath the masthead on either side of the main image. The cover lines for this magazine are plain black with different fonts to make the magazine look interesting since there are not many colours used to compensate for the rest of the features.

Main image: It’s the second most conspicuous feature of the magazine since the background is white and her hair colour and pose gives life to the magazine as well as her costume which is a bright yellow colour. Her hair is orange/red making her seem fierce. Her expressions depict how confident and happy she is since she ‘rose above rejection’, as mentioned in the model credits. The magazine gives off a very feminine exterior and is mainly addressed towards the female audience. Her lipstick is red which can be perceived as womanly and bold instead of shy and girly. She is also looking directly at the camera making her seem assertive and fearless but at the same time subtle and classy.

The puff is in a round shape and the colour of the puff is a transparent light orange colour, complimenting the rest of the colour scheme.

Mast head: The colour of the mast head is a bright pink colour which can be contorted with female youth. It also compliments the background and the main image. It is written in simple bold letters and is hidden behind the image because it is a well known magazine.

cover lines: The typography is in black or pink and is written in large or small words to make the different cover lines stand out. If too many colours were added, then it would make the cover lines look too confusing and drive the attention away from the more important features.

colour palette: pink and turquoise give the magazine a feminine and voguish look. White, light brown and black make the magazine look subtle and not too flashy and creating balance with the bright colours.

main image: Rihanna’s hair, makeup and outfit are all black and compliment the rest of the colour scheme in the magazine. If she was wearing colourful clothes, the magazine wouldn't have been too appealing. Her complexion also compliments the light brown typography. The colour black connotes independence and adulthood as well as either and elegance. Her eyes are captivating and are looking directly at the camera showing that she is confident and her expression is alluring making the audience want to look as glamorous as her. Her eye makeup can also be associated with feline eyes indicating that she looks clever. Her dark complexion and the highlight on her face makes her seem very reserved but open minded since a dark complexion can be associated with slavery in the past and the explicit meaning of the highlighted can be connected with the fact that she has liberty to stand out and has a right to express herself.
