“Change has been a way of life for the Sentinel-Tribune and the newspaper business.”

The month of February contains the birthdays of two famous U.S. presidents, Washington and Lincoln. But in Wood County, the dates Feb. 22 and Feb. 12 serve double duty. The former, Washington’s birthday, is also the birthday of the Sentinel-Tribune, or more precisely, its antecedent, the Sentinel. And the latter, Lincoln’s birthday, is also the day of the birth of Wood County. The Sentinel, the third paper founded in the county, was first issued Feb. 22, 1867. The paper championed the town and county against the whole outside world, then as now. Its motto, adopted a month after its first issue, was, “Be just to all mankind, and fear not the malice of the unjust.” This spirit pervades its history. On May 1, 1890, Samuel E. Vail purchased a third interest in the paper. It was this interest that Alfred Haswell bought on June 21, 1899, becoming manager. On Dec. 10, 1906, the Tribune was merged with the Sentinel, and the paper came off the press bearing its present masthead, Sentinel-Tribune. The Tribune was founded as a daily and a weekly in 1892. The merger was the result of a strike called in April 1906 by printers at the two newspapers and the economic hardships of competing for business in a small town. The Sentinel-Tribune has been owned by the Haswell family for 118 years. The legacy began with Alfred Haswell as the newspaper’s first publisher, then his son, Claude M., and Katherine Taylor Haswell served as publisher until 1979. Currently, Thomas M. serves as president and on May 25th, 2010, Karmen Concannon, his daughter, was named publisher. The Sentinel-Tribune is a multimedia partner with our Wood County community. We are committed to giving our neighbors the information they need and helping businesses grow by delivering local coverage accessible to our customers anywhere, anytime.
