n To mark its anniversary, Syslogic is launchinga completely new development in the form ofa ruggedized PC line that operates with highreliability during continuous operation evenunder the toughest conditions. Called the RPC(Rugged PC) Compact 71 and available in avariety of models, it features a durable anodizedaluminum housing that is assigned to protec-tion class IP67 and thus is both dustproof andwatertight. Syslogic sees enormous market po-tential for this family of products, especiallyfor uses in construction machinery or trans-portation-monitoring systems.

Inside the housing a rugged and maintenancefree Syslogic embedded computer provides sev-eral innovations. The core of the RPC is thenew scalable Intel Queensbay platform. Theperformance level last from 600MHz across1.0 and 1.3 up to 1.6GHz. All four processorshave the low power consumption in combina-tion with the high performance in common.Besides, the RPC Compact71 comes with areal time clock (RTC) which is supplied by amaintenance free gold cap solution. The RPCCompact 71 gets along without any movingparts. The system is suitable for the 24/7 con-tinuous operation and approved for the usewithin the extended temperature range of -40up to +65 degrees Celsius on component level. In addition, the RPC is designed for various in-dustries such as construction machines accord-ing to DIN EN 13309 or for Railway according

to DIN EN 50155. Furthermore the RPC Com-pact 71 comes with ten standard M12 interfaceconnector as well as a regular SD interface anda two wire LVDS Interface. (FPD-Link)

The RPC Compact 71 is used all around appli-cation where harsh environmental conditionsdominate and conventional industrial com-puter capitulate. According to this, the RPC issuited for usage in outside application - neitherhumidity nor extreme variations in tempera-ture can harm this rugged system. It is fre-quently use for construction machines. RaphaelBinder, Product Manager at Syslogic pointsout: “With its IP67 protection, the RPC Com-pact 71 is qualified for the use in dusty envi-ronment. Due to its extremely rugged housingthe RPC permanently withstands even higheststresses and strains.”

Besides the standard products, Syslogic fulfillsalso individual customer demands. As an ex-ample; it is possible to equip the ten standardM12 connections individually with differentinterfaces - even for small quantities. Withthis, Syslogic underlines its expertise as asystem manufacturer for small and midsizedquantities. The European company, which de-velops and manufactures all of their productswithin Europa, is well established within theSMB market due to the high degree of indi-vidualization for a comparatively small quantitywhich the company offers.

Syslogic celebrates 25 years of operation

For the past 25 years, Syslogic has stood for ro-bust industrial computers and display systemswith a long service life. With these specialproducts, which are specifically optimized tomeet industrial requirements, this Swiss com-pany has firmly established itself in the Euro-pean market.

Originally founded exclusively for the market-ing and sales of standard products from F.J.Furrer - W.M. Gloor AG (Furrer + Gloor),which specialized in industrial controls, Syslogicquickly developed into a professional partnerfor industrial informatic systems. In 1992, asan extension to Syslogic Datentechnik AG withits headquarters in Dietikon, Switzerland, theGerman subsidiary Syslogic GmbH was found-ed and from then on took over responsibilityfor the European market. Eventually in 1997,Syslogic acquired all the business operationsof Furrer + Gloor and continued to carry outall that company’s activities under its ownname. Following the move from Dietikon toBaden, headquarters are today located in Baden-Dättwil. Meanwhile, the Syslogic Group –which besides Syslogic Datentechnik AG alsoincludes Systronics AG and Logitronic AG –generates most of its revenue in Germany,Austria and Switzerland. While Syslogic madeits mark as a supplier of industrial computers, embedded systems and touch panels, Systronicshas specialized in the marketing and sales ofindustrial memory products based on flashtechnology along with peripherals. Logitronicis the manufacturing, purchasing and logisticsarm of the Syslogic Group. All three SyslogicGroup companies continually strive to providethe highest quality over the long term. This isapparent in Syslogic industrial computers andembedded systems just as much as in product

support and professional technical advice pro-vided to customers throughout the life of aproject.

Companies that use industrial computers intheir systems must be sure that these will func-tion reliably for years of continual operation, even under harsh conditions. In order to meetthese requirements optimally, Syslogic developsand manufactures its products exclusively inEurope. As one of the few European companiesin the field, Syslogic has its own complete de-velopment platform. This eliminates any fluc-tuations in quality due to changes in suppliers. Thanks to their modern production line, thisISO 9001-2008 certified company is also ableto offer its products at competitive prices.

Christian Binder, CEO of the Syslogic Group, explains: “Syslogic offers everything from onesource, starting with its own product develop-ment and production through sales and supportduring the implementation phase. In this way,we can guarantee our customers the trouble-free operation of our systems over many years.”

Syslogic computers put to work on thehigh seas

To see why Syslogic products and services arealways the first choice when conditions are especially tough, consider a current projectfar from the German coastline. In the middleof the raging North Sea, as part of a researchproject, the first offshore wind turbines wereerected and together they produce more than5 MW of electricity. ABB is supplying a varietyof components for the project, including thetrue heart of the wind turbines, the frequencyconverters that transform the generated powerinto the desired frequency and voltage. For

system monitoring and remote control of theseconverters, ABB turned to the industrial com-puters from Syslogic’s Compact ML productline. In this regard, Roger Erne, EngineeringProject Manager at ABB, states, “A fundamentalcriterion for offshore wind turbines is lowmaintenance. Just like our components, theSyslogic computers are consistently designedto meet this requirement. That’s why the Com-pact ML computers are ideal for providing access to our converters.”

The concept behind the Compact ML familyis based on a design that is fully enclosed, re-quires no fans and has no cables whatsoever. In this way, Syslogic guarantees that the com-puters run problem-free over long periods oftime, even under the roughest possible weatherconditions that predominate in the North Seaincluding extreme temperature fluctuationsand high humidity. Designed to handle chal-lenging remote functions, the Compact MLcomputer for this project was additionallyequipped with a particularly powerful memorymodule that provides 32 Gbytes of storage. Inthis way, the engineers at ABB have the abilityat any time to perform diagnostics on the converter using the remote access tool or toperform bug fixes.

New products just in time for its 25thanniversary

In order to further solidify its market position,Syslogic is preparing new products just in timefor its 25th anniversary. Besides the alreadymentioned rugged PC RPC Compact 71, Sys-logic introduces the Compact MS, which withits considerably reduced architecture standsout due to its compact form factor, minimal

power consumptionand ruggedness. Thus, this computenode is well suitedas a protocol convert-er for monitoringand control systems.

For complex appli-cations that requirehigher computepower, Syslogic ispresenting the Com-pact SL, which fea-tures a wide rangeof interfaces includ-ing USB, Ethernetand EtherCAT andthus enables flexibleconnections. Uniquein the market is theintelligent powermanagement usednot only in the Com-

pact SL but also in other Syslogic computers. An additional micro-controller monitors system behavior when the computer is being ac-tivated or deactivated and, when an entire system, such as a plant, isturned off, it ensures safe shutdown of the industrial computer. Withthis feature, Syslogic guarantees the highest level of data securitybecause even during the shutdown phase no information is lost.

Additional opportunities are in the area of industrial touch screendisplays. With an series of infrared touch panels, Syslogic is reactingto the latest requirements in industrial applications. The Swiss com-pany’s infrared panels have no mechanical wear whatsoever, requireabsolutely no maintenance and are well suited for continuous 24/7operation. Christian Binder summarizes, “We’re convinced that withour tested and proven products as well as these newly launched inno-vations, we are covering the requirements of the highly specializedniche market of industrial computers and display systems and will beable to further expand our market position.” n
