New Cities Summit 2017: Program

The 2017 Summit program will feature a mix of high-level keynotes, plenary panels, interactive workshops, in-depth roundtables and presentations from the most promising urban innovators. Key themes will include:

Understanding Urban WellbeingWith the rapid growth of cities around the world, urban wellbeing is quickly becoming synonymous with global wellbeing. While cities promise economic benefits and improved access to services, there is unbalanced pressure on the budgets and the reach of city governments. We must start designing cities as ecosystems of wellbeing, but what does this imply and what defines a ‘healthy city’?

Harnessing Technology in Urban HealthcareTechnology is profoundly changing the way we think urban health. Sensors and real time data allow cities to pinpoint the needs of urbanites and where to place critical services – creating ecosystems of wellness.

The New Urban WorkforceA new generation of workforce and new work styles are emerging as technology is altering the time and space needed to do business. These shifts are creating a nimble workforce. This urban age requires not only new solutions to modern problems, but also a reworking of the spaces where these ideas are born.

The Social Infrastructure of Successful CitiesCities are the products of interaction. The importance of these interactions cannot be understated - studies show that social isolation can lead to health risks as significant as heart disease. How can we avoid a social infrastructure deficit?

Clean and Healthy Transport SystemsReducing emissions in urban transport is key to fighting climate change. The worst cases of congestion and pollution appear where mass transit systems are lacking or nonexistent, forcing the use of personal vehicles or unregulated options. How do we reimagine our transit systems to improve accessibility while reducing CO2 emissions?

Setting Wellbeing StandardsJust as buildings, cars, and national governments have enforceable and measurable standards, so should cities. With increasing the quality of urban life the ultimate goal, cities must be judged on their activities and investments that promote wellbeing.

The Unlikely Appeal of Disruptive UrbanpreneursSMEs form the lifeblood of urban economies across the world. What is the role of the public sector in encouraging innovation and attracting entrepreneurs? What regulations are necessary to make sure startups can prosper?

Culture Capitals, Tourism HubsCulture plays an essential role in defining a city’s identity. Yet, as cities become successful the cost of living and increase in tourism drive away those at the heart of cities’ culture: artists, students, creators. How do cities balance economic development and building a culturally rich ecosystem?

New Cities Summit 2017: Program

The Magnetism of Midsize Cities Mid-size cities will absorb most of the new urban population and are intrinsically linked to their national economies. These cities must ensure that they remain competitive both domestically and on the world stage. What are the main challenges they face and what is their potential?

Special Economic ZonesNational economies across the world have enacted SEZs as a method of generating economic activity and improving infrastructure. SEZs are especially predominant in new cities, looking to attract investment and skilled labor. How do cities ensure that incentives for businesses are translating to improved urban development? What can we learn from past examples?

Innovations in Financing Infrastructure City leaders face a continued challenge of promoting healthy communities through infrastructure, given the rising demands of their growing populations and limited budgets. What are some of the emerging innovative methods of financing urban infrastructure? Where do we see the biggest gaps in urban infrastructure financing?

Greenfield Cities: Building Digital NativesNew cities have the unique opportunity to embed the latest technologies, allowing them to build connected communities from the onset. Yet, the rate at which technology is evolving means they risk designing around systems which will become obsolete before they are even built. How can new cities leverage their technological head-start to ensure their success?

Healthy PlacemakingPublic spaces are the heart of a city, where human interactions, leisure, culture, and arts meet. However they are not innate. Animating public spaces requires thinking, planning, and collaboration. How can the social potential of a place be unleashed? How do we make urban interaction central to city planning?

On Demand Cities Mobile devices and new technology mean that services are now within a pocket’s reach. Efficiency and ease define the modern urbanite’s behavior, and thus on-demand is ruling the service sector. Where can the public sector get involved? How important is the notion of community and trust?

Flexible and Resilient Services at the Heart of the CityCity governments and public service providers must be able to efficiently meet the changing needs of their citizens – whether a sudden phenomenon or a gradual trend. How can adaptability be built into traditional city services? Working on our WaterwaysWhere water used to be the main channel of communication through cities, today, waterways as means of local transport are largely underutilized. How can cities make optimal use of their waterways? Can water-based transport be integrated in the transit systems of our cities? Can on-demand transportation platforms make use of our waterways? Are there any examples of services that do? What are the environmental considerations?
