I was asked to design a mask that would cover a longbeard as the most common masks either don't t wellor won't work at all. There are two options for themask, either straight or taper look. The construction isthe same for either. There is a pocket to hold a lterover just the face part of the mask. This can bemodi ed to t a longer beard if needed. The beardpocket is about 5" long.

I've included a pattern to make a lter to t this mask.It is your choice as to what lter material you use. This

Fabric – Good quality tightly woven cotton is what isbeing recommended most

Non-woven Interfacing – Either Fusible or not yourchoice, I used Fusible and light to medium weight

Straps – Ribbon, Woven Tape or made from Fabric willneed 4 about 22 inches long

Elastic – 1/4” to 3/8” wide and 6 1/2” long or makeCOVID-19 Beard Mask: Page 1

is the process I used about how to make a lter from ahouse lter, https://www.sewcanshe.com/blog/how-to-make-a-face-mask- lter-with-hepa-fabric-video-tutorial. We couldn’t nd a HEPA rated lter so we gota 3M Filtrete 1500 lter from Lowes. I started tearing itapart but sliced my nger on the metal part, so becareful. From a 16” by 30” air lter, I got 6 feet by 30”of lter material. Double check that your lter doesnot contain berglass. Also, 3M doesn’t support theuse of this product this way nor has it been testing forpreventing COVID-19.

Here is the the pattern that I based this o of,https://www.craftpassion.com/face-mask-sewing-pattern/2/

Note: This is my rst Instructable, please be kind withthe comments. If something is wrong or needs moreexplaining, please let me know and I'll get it xed assoon as I can. I'll also be adding better pictures butwanted to get this out there as timely as possible.

Print the pattern on an 8 1/2" by 11" paper. Once printed check the scale to make sure that it printed correctly. Theprinted line are the cut lines and the seam allowance is 1/4". You do not need to add a 1/4" to the pattern.Determine which Beard cut you want and follow that cut line. Cut out the pattern using paper scissors, if desired.

Step 2:

Step 3:

Step 4:

Using the provided patterns, cut out the fabric and Interfacing

Apply interfacing to the fabric either by fusing it or basting it to the fabric. This will be on the Outside of the maskand considered the front.

Step 5:

Step 6:

On the Beard Front part:

1. Trim o 3/4” o the top long edge2. On the short straight side, fold in 1/2" of the raw edge and press

On the Beard Back part:

1. On the short straight side, fold in 1/2" of the raw edge and press2. Fold over 1/4" on the long top edge and press3. Then fold over 1/2" again and press. This makes a casing.

On all Face pieces:

Step 7:

Step 8:

Step 9:

1. Fold over 1/4" on the ear side and press2. Fold it over again to hide the raw edge and press

On the Beard Front, stitch the short sides to nish the hem

On the Beard Back, stitch the long edge of the casing close to the folded edge. Leave the ends open as this will laterhold either elastic or a strap

Sew the Beard Front and Back together along the angled sides and bottom

Step 11:

Step 12:

On the Face Pieces:

1. Sew the ear sides that were folded over2. Sew the center nose seam to make two pieces3. Clip the seam allowance4. Press the seam to one side. Make sure they are both pressed the same direction so when they put

together the seam allowances will be going di erent directions

Using the Face Front (the one with the Interfacing attached) line up the Beard Front with the bottom edge startingin the center and working out.

NOTE: you will only be catching the raw edge of the Beard Front. You may need to fold the Beard Back down so youdon’t catch it.

Step 19:

Step 20:

Step 21:

From the center nose seam on the top edge, measure 3 1/4" to each side and mark

At one of the marks, sew from the top edge down for 3/8”, turn a right angle and sew along top 3/8” from the edgeover the nose to the other mark. Leave one side open to insert a nose wire later.

If using elastic, cut a 6 1/2" long piece.

1. Insert it into the Beard Back Casing2. Sew end of casing close catching elastic to secure it3. If not, you’ll need a strap about 36” long

COVID-19 Beard Mask: Page 14

Page 15: COVID-19 Beard Mask

Step 22:

Make Fabric Straps:

1. Cut two 1 1/2" wide strips the width of the fabric. This will give you a 3/8” wide strap when done2. Fold short side in half and press3. Open up and fold the edges to the center4. Refold down the middle and press5. Fold in half long-wise and cut in the center6. On newly cut edges

1. Open up and fold down 3/8”2. Refold close

7. Do for the other strip fabric8. Sew the long edges closed9. Should have 4 straps about 3/8” by 22”

For Other Straps:

Cut 4 straps 22" long making sure to either cut the ends on an angle or treat with fabric glue so it won't unravel.

Page 16: COVID-19 Beard Mask

COVID-19 Beard Mask: Page 16

Page 17: COVID-19 Beard Mask

Step 25:

Step 26:

1. Cut 20-gauge wire 7 1/2" long2. Spiral the ends to hide the cut end3. The nal length should be 6 1/2" long

Insert the Nose Wire in the casing on the nose. If wanted seam the end up. I left it open so it could be removedwhen washed.

To Make a lter:

1. Use the lter pattern and cut 2 pieces of ltering material.2. Sew the center seam and nger press to one side.3. Slide it between the two layers of the mask.

Wonderful job but the question is.the problem is not covering the beard. The issue is the sealbetween the face and the mask. Covering the beard really isn't the issue. There has always been aproblem with respirators and beards. This article may seem overkill but explains fit tests,https://www.3m.com/3M/en_US/safety-centers-of-expertise-us/respiratory-protection/fit-testing/

My understanding of the purpose for wearing a face covering is to prevent the individual who iswearing it from contaminating others. If a bandanna or scarf is acceptable for wearing out in public,I don't think they are looking for exact respirator fit. If you are looking for that, this kind of a maskwill certainly not seal that way, but it should be sufficient for use in social distancing.

Thank you so much! I've made several and the "bearded masked man" loved them and me.

Thanks for this, I do a ton of painting and sanding and was never able to find a decent mask thatkept the saw dust and stuff out of my beard. Not bad for my first attempt, will have to make somepersonal adjustments for a permanent one, but the step by step was easy to follow. Thanks again.

Great idea will even make nice face masks for riding the Harley

THANK YOU !

Thanks so much for these detailed instructions. Im modeling the finished results, but made it for myson. Thanks again!

Thank you for sharing! My brother-in-law will be happy!

Thanks for the pattern! It went together well and I am glad there was no handwork involved. I amalso glad that my bearded son can be masked!

Thank you so much for sharing this! I've been using the same pattern from Craft Passion since2015 and I've recently been asked by a friend to make one that fits a beard. You are a genius!

Thanks for sharing your mask design :)
