Welcome to the 2017-2018 School Year
The new school year was kicked off with many fun-filled days. Staff and students have made a positive start to this new school
year. All have enjoyed the Back to School Fair sponsored by the PTO, and Meet the Teacher Ice Cream Social was filled with many
new faces and lots of hugs from all. All the volleyball, football, and cross county athletic teams are busy making Covington proud
with their team efforts and “can do” attitudes. Students and staff made it through the first week of school enduring all the changes
that were in place. There were smiles all day as the photographer snapped pictures on picture day. The first pep-rally was a
decade theme day with lots of students dressing up to reflect the decades of the 50’s through the 80’s. It is clear to see that this
school year will be full of surprises, fun, and positive attitudes. Welcome Back, Everyone!

OWLstanding Students Each week Covington elementary focuses on a different
positive characteristic word. Teachers select students
performing the acts of the characteristic words each week.
The following students received OWLstanding student awards
for August. It is a great feeling knowing students can stand
out by doing the right things. Our first characteristic word of
the year was PRIDE. Great job Braden Reitz, Catelynne
Nickell, Keith Karlicek, Jaycee Smith, Cali Griffin, McKenzie
Bevens, Sawyer Ownbey, and Jenna Baker.
Student Council Officers Named Congratulations to the 2017-2018 Student Council Officers. President JJ Salas, Vice President Chandler McGhee, Secretary Lexi Uselton, Treasurer Fernando Navarro, Historian Kinleigh Stott.
Student Council Donates to Hurricane Victims Covington Student Council was called upon to help evacuees from Hurricane Harvey. We donated hygiene kits with double supplies including soap, shampoo, conditioner, toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, lotion, combs, razors, etc. to Covington Cares which then donated the kits to hurricane victims in Fort Worth. "It's a great way for us to provide a community service, especially for those victims who may have lost everything." said Ms. Saccardo council sponsor.
Throughout the last school year Student Council provided hygiene supplies to our students via our school nurse and counselor and also to the Community through the local food bank. We are always accepting donation of supplies. You can drop off any supplies to Ms. Saccardo.
Powderpuff Game Covington Student Council will again man the entrance gate at the Powderpuff/Old Timers Game on Friday, September 29. Game fee will be $2 for all attendees. This is a great way to come out and support your Covington Student Council.

New Teacher Spotlight
PTO News Covington PTO wants to thank everyone who came out to this year’s Back to School Fair. We love to see such a great turnout each year. The next PTO sponsored event will be the Teacher Luncheon for the first six weeks on October 6th. Our theme will be "PTO" also known as pizza, tea, and Oreos. Please watch for membership forms to come home with your student for the annual membership drive. Becoming a member supports activities for the students, teacher luncheons, and the annual Back to School Fair. Your membership supports the kids even if you can't make every meeting or event.
The next PTO meeting will be held October 9th at 6 p.m. in the school cafeteria.
Mrs. Nickell is one of Covington’s newest elementary teachers. She will be filling our student’s
minds with science wonders this school year. Mrs. Nickell is from Aledo, Texas. She is no
stranger at Covington, she was a sub last school year for an extended period. She is a 2016
graduate of Dallas Baptist University.
Mrs. Nickell’s favorite subject in school was science. In her spare time she enjoys designing
horse show clothing. Her goals for the future are to raise children in a way that makes them
positive contributors to society and to never stop learning.
She and her husband have been married for 10 years and are proud parents of two children,
who attend school at Covington; Catelynne is in kindergarten and Colton is in second grade.
Mrs. Nickell said, “I love my kids and love the Covington family. I’m blessed to have some of
them for a second year in a row, but this time as a permanent teacher.” Her words of wisdom
for student are “don’t focus so much on chasing the dreams and desires of others that you
lose focus of your own.”
Journalism Club
The Hoot will be published once a month, please bring
any news you would like to share school-wide to the
library.
If any student would like to be a part of starting a
journalism club, please stop by the library.
There will be many ways to help with articles for the
newspaper. For example, writing articles on sports,
fashion, jokes, puzzles, taking pictures, and much
more. Consider helping out, it would be a great
community service project. Stop by and share your
ideas.

They are enjoying learning our friends’ names and playing in stations. Every day is a great day in Kinder! Keep up the good work parents!!
Second Grade Mrs. Hardin’s class kicked off the new year in a healthy way. They watched “The Sneeze” video on Discovery Education. It showed what happens when we have germs on our hands. We refreshed our memories about how to properly wash hands. In math, they are learning that math is so much fun. Place value blocks and digit cards have been used to show numbers in different ways. Reading time is going well with groups going to stations and getting their AR tests taken. She hopes students earn their AR goal so everyone will be with us on the AR field trip in the spring. We have four new students this year and we are very happy to have them. Welcome to Savannah, Payton, Parker, and Jerry.
Science and Health with Mrs. Nickell 4th Grade Science-Are nearing the end of their study on matter in Unit 3. They have had the opportunity to do many exciting labs, including one called a Balloon Poke. The class had three balloons, all filled with either air, water, or ice. This was a great way for them to visually observe the 3 states of matter. Next, we will start Unit 4, Forms of Energy, and finish it at the beginning of the second 6 weeks. We have emerging scientists and they are very excited about coming to class. 4th Grade Health-The first 6 weeks they have focused on making responsible decisions, avoiding harmful ones, nutrition, and building a pleasant character within ourselves. These 4
th graders have some huge hearts!
5th Grade Science- Started the year off strong! 5th grade is a huge year for science so they aren’t wasting any time the first week. The first 6 weeks, students have covered 2 units; Matter and Forces and Motion. They have done multiple hands-on labs and worked really hard at journaling in our science notebooks, as well as using our book as a valuable resource for information. These 5
th graders are very energetic and Mrs. Nickell sees tons of future
Einsteins!
6th Science-Has started the year off with Scientific Tools and Measurements in Unit 2. It's so important for them to understand measurements and conversions as they prepare for junior high. By doing this, they have paved their way for higher level science courses that introduce scientific notation into science equations. They will end the first 6 weeks studying matter and reviewing solids, liquids, and gases. They will also start covering the periodic table of elements.
6th Grade Health-They are building amazing characters in health! We have discussed healthful behaviors, hygiene,
nutrition, and making responsible decisions.
Math, Science, and Technology with Mrs. Benton
4th grade Math-Students have been working super hard on learning place value, decimals, and how they relate to
fractions and money.
4th Social Studies-Students are learning about the different types of Regions in Texas. Students made a project of a
specific region that included; climate, habitat, animals, and elevation of their regions.
4th
Technology-The students are learning how to type.
