Dear Parents
This week we celebrate Education Week
and today we hosted the annual Open
Day that has been a great opportunity for
parents and families to come into the
school to visit rooms and enjoy the
wonderful atmosphere at Cowra Public
School. Our school is very proud of the
educational programs we offer which
promote the learning and development of
our students in a friendly and well structured
environment.
The Pedlars Parade was also a huge
success today with the parade being
enjoyed by a full auditorium and everyone
was eager to pick up a bargain or two. The
quality of the boxes this year was very high
with some absolute treasures in more than
just a few boxes. The school was delighted
with the response and happy to announce
that the funds raised will be directed back
into the Stage 1 rooms in the way of
resources to assist in literacy and maths.
The school has been a hive of activity this
week with several students competing in
the University of NSW English exam. We
have been very impressed with our students
who have participated in the UNSW exams
and very proud of their achievements. One
highlight was Archie Osborne who
achieved a High Distinction in science
which is a tremendous result.
The school has also been involved in PSSA
sport through girls and boys touch football.
The girls played on Tuesday against
Boorowa, unfortunately going down to a
very strong team. The boys play tomorrow
in Blayney with Mr Garlick very confident of
the team’s chances.
We have also had the pleasure of hosting
Healthy Harold and the Life Education Van
for the week and the children have
enjoyed the valuable lessons based on
healthy choices.
Also happening tomorrow will be the much
anticipated performance of 'Bullies 2',
which will inform the children of the ways to
work through issues in a positive way with
peers and to make choices that are going
to result in a positive outcome. This
performance is one that I would
recommend all children attend and with
the small cost of $5 it really is seen as a
worthwhile event to be involved in.
ENROL NOW FOR 2015 - Kinder to Year 6 A school with unique learning opportunities.
Moving beyond the present by educating for the future.

Thursday, 16 October
Thursday, 23 October
Thursday, 30 October
Last week we announced that the
school ties would be available from the
office and what a response we have
had. The school ties have been rushing
out of the office with children and
parents showing a very positive attitude
towards their introduction. Ties are still
available but please don't wait too long
to grab one as they are moving fast.
Enjoy your week.

YEAR 4 ROAD SAFETY PROGRAM
CYCLING
Many children ride bicycles, yet have little idea of
basic cycling skills and safety, either off or on the roads.
Each year children’s lives are lost in cycling accidents.
Many of the accidents do not involve another moving
vehicle and could be prevented through improved
knowledge, skills and attitude.
As part of our road safety program, we are conducting
a half-day session of cycling activities at school for
Year 4. To gain full benefit from the program, children
with bicycles and Standards Association of Australia
approved cycling safety helmets should bring them to
school on Thursday, 28 August 2014. The helmet must
be worn in the interests of safety and it is now the law.
Children should try to arrange to borrow a helmet for
the day if they do not own one. All helmets brought to
school should have the child’s name on them.
These basic cycling skills and safety lessons DO NOT
INCLUDE CYCLING ON THE ROAD. All lessons will be
conducted in the school playground. Their aim is to
improve cycling safety.
Please check your child’s bicycle for safety and discuss
the way in which you would like your child to transport
the bicycle to school.
Parental help in the supervision and instruction of
children would be most gratefully appreciated. The
course will run from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and again
from 2:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m., on Thursday, 28 August
2014.
Children who are not able to get a
bike to school for this day are
encouraged to make arrangements
to share a friend’s bike in order to
participate in the bike safety
activities.
LIBRARY NEWS
MS Read-A-Thon
On Tuesday Leanne from the MS-Read-A-Thon came to
the school to speak to primary students about MS and
the MS Read-a-thon.
The MS Read-a-thon is a reading-based fundraiser run by Multiple
Sclerosis Australia (MSA). Now in its 36th year, the MS Read-a-thon
encourages people of all ages to read and improve their literacy whilst
at the same time raising their community awareness.
Participants read as much as possible during August and ask friends and
family to sponsor them either online or by giving a donation in cash or
cheque. This money goes towards providing vital support and services
for people living with MS.
The best way to find out more or register is online at
http://www.msreadathon.org.au. Students are welcome to use,
computers at school to register and participate with their parents
permission.
Book Week ~ “Connect to Reading”
Week 6 18-22 August
Book Week is held in Term 3 where we celebrate everything we love
about reading. The theme this year is “Connect to Reading”. We will
hold a Book Week parade where students are invited to dress up as their
favourite character from a book. Many students (and parents) already
have their thinking caps on.
This Term in Library:
Infants: Infants students are looking at nutrition. They will be learning how
to use Publisher to create a poster. Many kindergarten students are still
learning how to type their name. Any time they can practice at home
would be most beneficial.
Stage 2: Stage 2 are completing work on Emergencies by researching a
first aid treatment and presenting to the class. In the second half of the
term students will also be looking at nutrition and using Publisher.
Stage 3: Stage 3 are completing their unit on Emergencies by learning
CPR. We have borrowed a number of dummies so that students are able
to have some hands on experience. In the second half of the term
students will also be looking at nutrition and using Publisher.

COMMONWEALTH GAMES DAY
Cowra Public School has been invited to join other local schools in a special Commonwealth Games Day to be held on Friday, 22
August at Twigg Oval.
We participated in an Olympic Games Day a few years ago which was a great day of sporting fun and was coordinated by the
same company.
Children will be allocated a country to represent and will then get the opportunity to make a flag to carry during the “Opening
Ceremony”.
Schools from the district are participating and it is a wonderful opportunity for all of our students to learn more about the
Commonwealth Games and the ideals they represent.
The cost for the day is $2.00 (The P & C is subsiding the day by $2.00). Students need to pay the $2.00 to the office before Friday, 22
August.
Students will walk to and from River Park accompanied by their class teachers at 9.30am and return to school at 2.00pm. Students
need to take their recess with them to the park. There will be NO ordered recess from the canteen. As the weather could be quite
cold, students will need to bring plenty of warm clothing, water to drink and a waterproof sheet or garbage bag to sit on.
Timetable:
10.00am-10.20am Recess
10.30am-11.00am Opening Ceremony
11.00am-12.30pm Events
12.30pm Lunch
1.15pm-1.45pm Closing Ceremony
There will be no canteen facilities available at River Park on Friday. Students will need to either bring a packed lunch or order from
Cowra Public School canteen. The canteen orders will be delivered to the oval at lunch time.

GIRLS’ TOUCH FOOTBALL
On Tuesday, 29 July the Girls’ Touch Football
team played in the second round of the
PSSA Knockout Competition against
Boorowa. Jayarna Pattinson-McGrath
scored the first try of the game and also
scored our only other try. Ella Roberts
played well on the wing, keeping Boorowa
from scoring. Isabella played dummy half
for most of the game and got some
impressive tags. Brooke Graham and Eliza
Mulligan both did excellent passes, tags
and had a few runs. Crystal Holmes was a
great all rounder, played extremely well
and never let the team down.
In the end, Boorowa was the best team on
the day and to the girls’ disappointment
defeated us by a few tries.
The girls would like to thank Mrs Oborn for
coaching them, and also to Mrs Garlick and
Mr Murray for refereeing us and all the other
supporters including parents for cheering us
on.
