Hillsborough County CelebratesHispanic Days 2012 - October 8-12

Hillsborough County will celebrate its Hispanic employees andcommunities with five days of art, culture and recognition. HispanicDays will be October 8 - 12, 2012, at County Center, 601 E. KennedyBlvd. in downtown Tampa.

An art exhibit in the lobby of County Center will feature the workof artists from different Hispanic countries, including Sarita Pacinne, aColombian artist who is featured at the weekly Ybor City SaturdayMarket. In addition, various artists with different Hispanic ethnicitieswill exhibit their art as well. All events and ceremonies duringHispanic Days are free and open to the public.

Hillsborough County AnimalServices to Present Cats, Bats & Bones on October 20

Hillsborough County Animal Services invites the public to “fly in” onSaturday, October 20 for the annual Cats, Bats & Bones bash. This dayof Halloween fun and pet adoption runs from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. at theCounty shelter located at 440 N. Falkenburg Road in Tampa. Offeringsinclude unconditional love, kid contests, and real, live bat chats.

Children attending Cats, Bats & Bones can come dressed for thekids costume parade, enter the “meow off” contest, and decorate theshelter with artwork from the creative coloring station.

In addition to adorable faces and tail-wagging deals, Cats, Bats &Bones celebrates the season with an appearance by Bat Belfrys, Inc.of Merritt Island. The non-profit organization is making a special stopin Hillsborough County as part of its mission to debunkmisconceptions and promote conservation of Florida’s beneficial bats.Bat Chats begin at 1:30 p.m. with a biologist on hand to answerquestions, show the animals, and demonstrate why bat houses makegreat neighbors.

Want to give a dog a bone? Cats, Bats & Bones will give hundredsof bright-eyed dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens a chance to go trick-or-treating with the public. Animal lovers are invited to bring anddistribute store-bought pet treats to lost and homeless shelterresidents. For safety reasons, home-made goodies are not permitted,and owned pets should remain at home during this event.

October is national Adopt-a-Dog Month, with all dogs 30 pounds ormore offered for just $30 at Hillsborough County Animal Services,the Humane Society of Tampa Bay, and C.A.R.E. of Ruskin.Additional specials will be offered during the Cats, Bats & Bonesbash, and all adoptions include spaying/neutering, vaccination,County registration tag, and micro-chip. Spicola Participates in“Deep Water Horizon”Appeals Panel

Guy Spicola, a 17-year HillsboroughCircuit Judge and two-term Chief Judge, hasbeen appointed by the United States DistrictJudge in Louisiana to serve on the class actionAppeals Panel for claims related to the BP“Deep Water Horizon” oil rig explosion andresulting oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico onApril 20, 2010.

According to Spicola, who currentlypractices at the Law Offices of Guy Spicola,

this is the largest class action suit in history, involving five states:Louisiana, Texas, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida. To date, morethan 53,000 claims have been filed and billions of dollars are involved.Florida leads the other states in the highest number of claims.

Hunter Appointed to Thirteenth CircuitJudicial NominatingCommission

C. Howard Hunter, Shareholder at Tampafirm Hill Ward Henderson, was recentlyappointed by Governor Rick Scott to theThirteenth Circuit Judicial NominatingCommission. The Judicial merit selection is away of choosing judges through appointment,using a non-partisan member commission oflawyers and non-lawyers to locate, recruit,

investigate, and evaluate applicants for judicial office. TheCommission submits the most highly qualified applicants to theGovernor for final selection. The Judicial Nominating Commissionhas nine members, five appointed directly by the Governor and fourare sent from The Florida Bar to the Governor.

Jobsite Theater Presents the 25th Anniversary “FanFavorite” Gorey Stories from October 24-November 18

Jobsite Theater, downtown Tampa’s award-winning resident professional theatercompany, is thrilled to keep their Halloween tradition alive by bringing back oneof their most loved shows – a deliciously dark and playful comic take on 18 shortstories by Edward Gorey. Gorey Stories, a play with music adapted by StephenCurrens with music by David Aldrich, plays October 24 – November 18 in theShimberg Playhouse at the David A. Straz, Jr. Center for the Performing Arts.

Gorey Stories is a compilation of stories, poems and limericks – a neo-gothic vision of the world as dark, mysterious,and yet simultaneously hilarious. In the mix are unusual creatures, curious landscapes, insanity, religious fanaticism,murder, catchy tunes and a deep appreciation for all of the arts.

One of the many changes to Jobsite’s 2012 staging of the show is the addition of an encore mini-concert of songsfrom the album by The Tiger Lillies with Kronos Quartet, The Gorey End. Gorey shared a box of unpublished storieswith The Tiger Lillies before his death that they turned into a concept album, and Jobsite will be staging songs such as“Gin,” “The Weeping Chandelier,” and “The Hipdeep Family.” Other changes to the show from Jobsite’s 2007production include new takes on the costumes, set, props and make-up, along with the introduction of video projectionand puppetry, new arrangements of the music with different instruments, and a cast of six now performing a show whichwas originally done with a cast of nine.

The late Edward Gorey (d. 2000) illustrated and wrote short stories, poems, prose and plays based in an eerie andmacabre world full of odd characters (often children) that experience strange fates and mysterious demises. Among hisbest-known works are dark delights like The Gashleycrumb Tinies, The Hapless Child and the titillating tale The CuriousSofa. His illustrations resemble Victorian-era woodcut drawings with a bit of Goya, Aubrey Beardsley and CharlesAddams thrown in for good measure. His illustrations were animated for the introduction to the PBS show Mystery!,and he provided production design for popular Broadway productions such as Dracula (for which he won a Tony® Awardfor Best Costumes). He also illustrated T.S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, the basis for the musical CATS.

Jobsite believes the show to be suitable for most, though always recommends patrons do their research. The dark butplayful material has the occasional bit of entendre and is certainly darkly sardonic, but the amusing results are suitablefor those who already love Lemony Snicket or the worlds of Tim Burton.

Jobsite’s production features a six-member ensemble under the direction of Jobsite Producing Artistic Director DavidM. Jenkins: Jason Evans, Amy Gray, Summer Bohnenkamp-Jenkins, Michael C. McGreevy, Spencer Meyers and KatrinaStevenson. Gorey Stories is under the baton of music director Robert Jarosh and features a three-piece band consisting ofpiano, double-bass and percussion. The monochromatic pallete (black, white and grey) of the show will be brought to lifeby a scenic and lighting design by Brian Smallheer, costumes by three-time Best of the Bay Award-winning designerKatrina Stevenson, puppets and marionettes by Amanda Bearss, and properties by Christen Petitt-Hailey.

Gorey Stories runs October 24-November 18, in the Shimberg Playhouse at the David A. Straz, Jr. Center for thePerforming Arts. The Museum of Science & Industry (MOSI) presents Images of Science, aphotographic exhibition of research images from the scientists of the MaxPlanck Institute. Theirselections form the basis of a traveling exhibit — Images of Science.

Club Jaeb Season Starts October 8Now celebrating its eighth season, Club Jaeb transforms the Straz Center’s Jaeb Theater into an

intimate music space featuring folk, Americana, alternative, country and other “hand-picked musicthat matters.” The 2012-2013 Club Jaeb season includes the following performers:

Darrell Scott - October 8 - Scott’s songs have been recorded by more than 70 artists including theDixie Chicks, Faith Hill, Sam Bush and Garth Brooks. He won Americana Songwriter of the Year in2007 and ASCAP’s Songwriter of the Year in 2002. Rolling Stone says he “matches Guy Clark andBruce Springsteen at their best.” Performing Songwriter calls him “the best of the best.” USA Todaysays his songs are “brilliantly clever.” In addition to his songwriting, Scott is a brilliant player on mul-tiple instruments. He recently toured with Robert Plant’s Band of Joy. His most recent recording is ACrooked Road, and he also wrote Red Molly’s “You’ll Never Leave Harlan Alive.”

Carrie Rodriguez – November 12 - Rodriguez started as a teenage violinist who went on to studyat the Berklee College of Music. Since then she’s mastered mandolin and guitar and toured with ChipTaylor, Lucinda Williams and Alejandro Escovedo. Although she’s a skillful songwriter (note herprideful shot at a cheating lover on “She Ain’t Me”), her latest CD Love and Circumstance is a col-lection of covers from some of the very best songwriters including Richard Thompson, Townes VanZandt and more.

Tyrone Wells – December 10 - A preacher’s kid, Wells combines soul, pop and folk rock – andmore than a few stories – in his live shows. He has spent the last year bouncing between Nashvilleand Los Angeles, so it makes sense that his spring 2012 release, Where We Meet, bounces effortless-ly between intimate and epic. His previous recordings Hold On and Remain contain songs that werefeatured on Grey’s Anatomy, The Vampire Diaries and Rescue Me. In 2010, Metal & Wood spent near-ly three weeks at No. 1 on the iTunes Singer/Songwriter chart and debuted at No. 14 on the BillboardHeatseekers Chart. Although he has hundreds of original songs, he has a knack for selecting greatsongs to cover and make his own, such as the Kings of Leon hit “Use Somebody.”

Kris Delmhorst - January 21 - A former member of Redbird (with Peter Mulvey and husbandJeffrey Foucault), Delmhorst approached one of her best recordings, Shotgun Singer, with a decided-ly lo-fi method. She isolated herself in a rural cabin with minimal recording gear and a houseful ofinstruments. Then she added some layers, “like an oil painting,” she says. Delmhorst’s voice has beendescribed as “wine deep and honey bright.” Never predictable, her Strange Conversation recordingturned the words of moldering poets like Rumi, e.e. cummings and Walt Whitman into modernsongs.“The album is an assured model of sophisticated songwriting and heartfelt musicianship.” —Boston Globe

Cheryl Wheeler – February 11 - A well-covered songwriter and natural-born storyteller, Wheelercounts Kenny Loggins, Garth Brooks, Holly Near and Dan Seals among those who have recordedher work. She returns to Club Jaeb a few years after a sold-out show that had the audience cryingand laughing, occasionally at the same time. “Imagine a performer with the songwriting whimsyof a Randy Newman, the soul of a Joan Armatrading, the vocal pyrotechnics of a Diane Schuurand the wry humor (and cluttered look) of a Linda Ellerbee.” – L.A. Richard Shindell – March 11 - Shindell first gained worldwide attention during a European tourwith Joan Baez, later forming a kind of folk supergroup with Dar Williams and Lucy Kaplansky calledCry Cry Cry. His South of Delia recording, featuring songs by Robertson, Dylan, Springsteen andGuthrie, was named a Top 10 selection by NPR. With Not Far Now he returns (mostly) to his ownsongs. Tift Merritt and Simone Dinnerstein – April 6- *This concert is in the Straz Center’s FergusonHall. It may seem an odd pairing at first, this Grammy Award-nominated alt-country darling and apianist known for her interpretations of Bach, Beethoven and Shubert. But Merritt has always resis-ted easy classifications, as comfortable in Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium as in Paris, where she livedfor a while. The album Night features a collection of new songs written especially for the duo by thelikes of Brad Mehldau, Patty Griffin and Philip Lasser. Jenny Scheinman, whose previous collabora-tors include Bill Frissell, David Byrne and Madeleine Peyroux, has contributed arrangements of someof Merritt’s and Dinnerstein’s favorite songs. Both artists will perform solo as well – Merritt in herown songs – more like musical short stories, including some from her latest recording See You on theMoon – and Dinnerstein in some of her favorite selections from the solo classical piano repertoire.“Always a storyteller…Merritt is the type of disarming talent who can easily coax her way into anygenre.” – NPR

Lori McKenna – May 6 - After taking a circuitous route to the music business, including raisinga family, this Boston-based singer-songwriter nods to Nashville but stays rooted in her own world.Marriage, family, a sense of place – they all inform McKenna’s intimate and detailed lyrics. Fellowmusician Mary Gauthier helped get McKenna’s songs noticed in Nashville and superstar Faith Hillrecorded three of them on her album Fireflies. Johnson, whohas performed at the Straz Center many times, wasthe first artist to perform on a Straz Center stage –the Fred Johnson Group played at July 17, 1987,soft opening of the performing arts center.

Johnson is a world-renowned performer and hisopening for both Aretha Franklin and DeepakChopra points to his versatility as an artist. An

acclaimed jazz musician and singer, Johnson has recorded and touredworldwide with jazz legends Chick Corea, George Benson, David Sanborn,B.B. King, Ramsey Lewis, Patti LaBelle, Herbie Mann and the great MilesDavis.
