Unwelcomed and loathed by all coaches and athletes in all endeavors, the lockdown was particularly troublesome for the Coyote football program that saw 30 seniors depart after last season, including 17 starters – nine on offense, eight on defense. Hendrickson and his staff moved forward, though, utilizing technology, online instruction and frequent communication with players in an attempt to prepare for an uncertain 2020 season. “This is a time unlike any other,” he said. “With that comes great opportunity for everybody to step up.” Hendrickson, though, did find some normalcy within the confines of basement office in the KWU Student Activities Center. “I can come in a work every day and try and help these student-athletes anyway I can and block out things going on outside,” he said. “As a head coach you’ve got to have a big-picture view, so I am keeping up with all the local, state and national news with the coronavirus. The Coyotes open the season against Friends at 6 p.m. at Graves Family Sports Complex, but the contest won’t count in the conference standings. Teams will play just eight conference games that count. Another significant football change came when the NAIA postponed postseason play until spring, meaning qualifiers will have a lengthy break before the playoffs begin. Hendrickson expects the KCAC to be a free-for-all with several teams capable of challenging for the title. “You look at some of the talent that’s back across the board and every week’s going to be a battle. There’s a lot of teams that bring back their best players,” he said. Hendrickson anticipates a squad of approximately 150 for the start of practice August 17. The group includes 35 transfers from junior college, Division I and Division II institutions. Hendrickson is confident the Coyotes have progressed as far as can be expected, given the circumstances. “It’s a step by step process,” he said. “I’m proud of the maturity our players showed throughout all of this. 2020 KANSAS WESLEYAN FOOTBALL SEASON PREVIEWMyers Hendrickson worked hard for fi ve months trying

to establish a daily routine. It wasn’t easy during a time

when everything in the world was anything but routine.

“We’re facing some unprecedented times and we’re kind

of writing a playbook that’s never been done before,”

said Hendrickson, who’s enters what he hopes will be his

second season as head football coach at Kansas Wesleyan.

“Every day we show up and do the best we can and control

what we can control.”

The Coyotes’ historic 2019 season, one in which they

marched through the Kansas Conference with a second

consecutive unbeaten record and advanced to the

quarterfi nals of the NAIA playoffs, seems lightyears

ago following a fi ve-month pause necessitated by the

COVID-19 pandemic.

The virus forced the suspension of in-person learning at

KWU and across the nation in March and eventually led to

the cancellation of all athletic-related activities, including

spring football practice.

Unwelcomed and loathed by all coaches and athletes in

all endeavors, the lockdown was particularly troublesome

for the Coyote football program that saw 30 seniors depart

after last season, including 17 starters – nine on offense,

eight on defense.

Hendrickson and his staff moved forward, though, utilizing

technology, online instruction and frequent communication

with players in an attempt to prepare for an uncertain

2020 season.

“This is a time unlike any other,” he said. “With that

comes great opportunity for everybody to step up.”

Hendrickson, though, did fi nd some normalcy within the

confi nes of basement offi ce in the KWU Student Activities

Center.

“I can come in a work every day and try and help these

student-athletes anyway I can and block out things going

on outside,” he said. “As a head coach you’ve got to have

a big-picture view, so I am keeping up with all the local,

state and national news with the coronavirus. But it is nice

to come in here and think about football.”

With COVID-19 still rampaging across the state and

nation, KCAC teams will play an abbreviated nine-game,

conference-only schedule this fall, starting September 12.

The Coyotes open the season against Friends at 6 p.m. at

Graves Family Sports Complex, but the contest won’t count

in the conference standings. Teams will play just eight

conference games that count.

Another signifi cant football change came when the

NAIA postponed postseason play until spring, meaning

qualifi ers will have a lengthy break before the playoffs

begin.

Hendrickson expects the KCAC to be a free-for-all with

several teams capable of challenging for the title.

“You look at some of the talent that’s back across the

board and every week’s going to be a battle. There’s a lot of

teams that bring back their best players,” he said.

Hendrickson anticipates a squad of approximately 150

for the start of practice August 17. The group includes

35 transfers from junior college, Division I and Division II

institutions.

Hendrickson is confi dent the Coyotes have progressed as

far as can be expected, given the circumstances.

“It’s a step by step process,” he said. “I’m proud of the

maturity our players showed throughout all of this. It

really challenged us as coaches to make sure we were

taking the best approach to this fall camp and be able

to compartmentalize and be able to do things really

effi ciently.

“We tried to stay as simple as possible in all three phases

– offense, defense, special teams. We found ways to do

it using technology, we brainstormed as a staff on what’s

going to be the best way to teach these student-athletes

and get them ready for September 12. I think we have a

really good plan.”

Hendrickson expects some spirited competition during

preseason camp given the size of the roster.

“We watched fi lm of last year and at the end of games

our twos and even threes were playing at a high level,” he

said. “And we brought in a really talented transfer class

and we brought some great freshmen in, too.

“We’re going to have a large roster, I think we’re really,

really deep and I think it’s going to create some incredible

position battles.”

Pinpointing who will be on the fi eld fi rst September 12

is impossible at this point, Hendrickson said. There is a

core of returning players he’s counting on to lead the way,

though.

OFFENSESuffi ce it to say KWU lost a LOT of fi repower. The Coyotes

averaged 48.2 points and 520.2 yards per game, including

a whopping 6.7 yards per play, in 2019.

Among the missing are AFCA/NAIA All-Americans Johnny

Feauto, who started at quarterback for two seasons,

running back Demarco Prewitt, wide out Trenton Poe-Evans

and left tackle Eli Smith. Also gone are split end Richard

McCauley, the top receiver, and all fi ve starters in the line.

There’s also a new coordinator in Mike Famiglietti, who coached at Northern State (S.D.) last season and

previously coached there with Hendrickson.

This season’s focus will be on senior wide out Stevie Williams, who also earned AFCA/NAIA All-America

recognition in his fi rst season. He caught 57 passes

for 1,455 yards and 17 touchdowns – several of them

highlight reel plays, including a dazzling catch against

Bethel that made ESPN’s SportsCenter Top 10.

“He’s the complete package,” Hendrickson said. “I love

what he does on the fi eld and his personality. He’s taken on

a mentor role within our program, he’s going to be able to

lead this next group of Coyotes through our program and is

such a spectacular talent.”

The big question, of course, is who will throw to Williams

and a host of new receivers. Feauto shattered numerous

records during his sure-to-be Hall of Fame career at KWU,

throwing for an incredible 7,362 yards and 90 touchdowns

with 18 interceptions.

Sophomore Peyton Farrington, last year’s backup, is

among the group vying for the job.

“To be fair to that position I’ve got to be able to evaluate

and see them work in person and we haven’t gotten to that

point yet,” Hendrickson said. “It’s wide open right now, but

I can tell you we’re very deep there, we’ve got some great

returners, we’ve got some great transfers and it’s going to

be an exciting bunch.

“We’re really talented in all sorts of positions, but we may

be deepest at quarterback.”

Like Feauto, Prewitt enjoyed spectacular back-to-back

All-America seasons, rushing for 3,858 yards and 63

touchdowns – 1,487 yards and 25 scores last fall.

Quincy Sandoval, a sophomore speedster who gained 161

yards and had a touchdown in 2019, is among a group of

backs competing for the starting job.

“Quincy Sandoval is an incredible football player and

he was a freshman, a fi rst-year player in our program,

and he’s going to come back and compete for the job,”

Hendrickson said.

The rebuilt line will be anchored by junior tackle Nolan Harris, who was in the regular rotation and saw

considerable duty last fall.

“There’s several guys coming back who I think could

have started on most teams in our conference, but they

just happened to be behind the best offensive line in the

conference as seniors,” Hendrickson said. “We’re going to

be really deep in the offensive line, we brought in transfers

to compete with the guys we’ve got coming back.”

DEFENSE Like the offense, there’s ample opportunity for newcomers.

Gone are two-time All-America end Shaq Bradford,

who led the NAIA in sacks the last two seasons, and

his counterpart Anthony Munro – KWU’s vaunted Sack

Exchange. They combined for 27 sacks a year ago

(Bradford 21, Munro 6) and had 54 between them the last

two seasons.

Also missing are linebacker Warren Singletary, who led the

team in tackles last two seasons, and Associated Press

All-American safety Dakota Anderson, who intercepted

eight passes last season.

Senior safety Scott Helsper anchors the secondary and will

lead the unit. He had 32 tackles and three interceptions

while starting all 13 games a year ago.

Helsper knows the leadership role falls on him.

“My biggest thing this year is I’m going to have to manage

to bring that same intensity that I always do, but also

make sure everyone is incorporated in a good way,” he

said. “Let all the new guys know they’re coming into a

good environment.”

That also means setting aside the successes of 2018 and

2019, for the time being.

“This year everyone’s going to be gunning for our heads,”

he said. “That brings a new challenge that I’m so excited

about. We’re no longer ahead of everyone, now we’re just

battling teams and that’s a whole new challenge.”

“He’s a leader playing in the secondary, the quarterback of

the defense helping people get lined up,” Hendrickson said

of Helsper. “I’m excited to see him grow his senior year and

have an even better year.”

The linebacking corps will be new as will the defensive

ends, both areas bolstered by a slew of newcomers.

The strength of the defense could be the interior line,

where Daniel Killian, David Mares and Malakye Adams return.

“Those three guys all played a lot of football for us last

year,” Hendrickson said.

SPECIAL TEAMSHendrickson said the placekicking and punting jobs are up

for grabs.

“We’ve got some guys that are here to compete,” he said.

“The specialist positions are going to be a battle.”

COACHING STAFF Hendrickson added four new coaches in addition to

Famiglietti.

Marvis Brown, B.J. Edmonds, Dylan Heck and Valerie Ochoa were hired – Brown coaching running backs,

Edmonds cornerbacks and Heck safeties. Ochoa will help

with the offense and special teams in addition to serving

as assistant coach for the new KWU women’s fl ag football

team. University United Methodist Church Pastor Nick

Talbott, will help with the offense.

Myers Hendrickson will coach the quarterbacks, his

father Mark the receivers and special teams, Mike Hallreturns as offensive line coach, and Josh Lewis is back to

coach linebackers and is the new recruiting coordinator.

Kretien Webb and Travis Benoist will again work with the

defensive line.

Matt Myers remains on staff, now as defensive coordinator

after serving as offensive coordinator a year ago. Brandon Baker, aka Dean McQueen, remains on staff as Director of

Player Morale.

CONFERENCE Hendrickson expects the conference to be a free-for-all.

“It’s wide open this year,” he said. “You look at some of the

talent that’s back across the board and every week’s going

to be a battle. There’s a lot of teams that bring back their

best players.”

The start of the Myers Hendrickson era of Kansas Wesleyan football looked impressively similar to the end of the Matt Drinkall era.

Led by several stars from last year’s epic effort the No. 4-ranked Coyotes pummeled Texas Wesleyan early and often and en route to a 48-24 non-conference victory before a near-capacity season-opening crowd of 1,276 Saturday night at Graves Family Sports Complex.

Coming off a historic 13-1 season in 2018 under Drinkall, who’s now an assistant at Army West Point, the Coyotes continued their dominance for Hendrickson, who was offensive coordinator at Division II Northern State last fall.

Quarterback Johnny Feauto threw for 215 yards and five touchdowns, tailback Demarco Prewitt ran for 127 yards and two scores, and Shaq Bradford produced 4.5 sacks – all in just two and a half quarters of play.

KWU’s starters scored on six of the first seven possessions, took a 41-3 lead into the locker room at halftime, scored on the first possession of the third quarter then watched the rest of the game from the sidelines.

“Coming into this game we felt very confident and very relaxed, and that first half just showed you what we can do,” said Feauto, who was 13 of 21 passing and had 52 yards rushing on five carries. “As an offense we felt very comfortable and we were clicking on all cylinders. It felt like we picked up from last year and took it to another level.”

Prewitt, who led the NAIA in rushing yards, rushing attempts and 41 touchdowns last season, had 149 total yards on 24 carries and one pass reception. Richard McCauley, who played for KWU last season, caught four passes for 86 yards and a touchdown, newcomer Stevie Williams had four receptions for 77 yards and two TDs, and returning tight end Trenton Poe-Evans three catches for 20 yards and two scores.

“I’ve been throwing to Stevie a bunch,” Feauto said. “He’s so fast, I thought I overthrew him twice and he just ran and got the ball.”

Hendrickson was thrilled with the way his team played from the start.

“The first game of the year there’s going to be some sloppiness and some things happen that you’re not planning but that wasn’t the case for us,” he said. “The way we started I felt like we hit on all cylinders on offense and defense. Our guys executed at a really high level and set the table for this game.”

KWU amassed 432 total yards – 248 passing, 184 rushing – while TWU had 318 total yards that included just 68 rushing.

Senior quarterback Donovan Isom was 20 of 33 for 282 yards and two touchdowns. He had 108 yards passing in the fourth quarter when the Rams scored three cosmetic touchdowns.

Isom was sacked five times the first half, 4.5 attributed to Bradford, who had an NAIA-best 22 sacks last season.

“We wanted to make it very uncomfortable and difficult him,” Bradford said. “We have a lot of skilled athletes on the perimeter.

“I’m a little stronger this year and my IQ’s gone up tremendously. Just getting a good feel for the game early and not starting off slow. As a defense we wanted to dictate the game and come out with the first hit instead of waiting for the offense.”

Feauto threw touchdown passes of 15 yards to Poe-Evans, 3 yards to McCauley, and Prewitt ran 13 yards for a score as the Coyotes led 20-0 at the end of the first quarter.

Feauto hit Poe-Evans again for a 2-yard touchdown on the sixth play of the second quarter, found Williams on an 8-yard scoring strike and capped the half with a 25-yard TD pass to Williams that he ran under and caught in the back of the end zone.

Prewitt’s 4 yard run into the end zone with 7:08 left in the third quarter made it 48-3 and was final play of the game for the offensive starters.

Texas Wesleyan’s defense stacked the line of scrimmage in an attempt to slow Prewitt but the strategy failed, thanks primarily to Feauto.

“In the run game they do stack the box and we had to get the ball out on the perimeter and get the ball down the field a little bit,” Hendrickson said. “Johnny Feauto loves to do that and made some big time plays. He ran it really well, too, and is just a playmaker. When the ball’s in his hands he can make some electric things happen and he did that tonight.”

Hendrickson also praised Bradford’s play.

“He changes the game singlehandedly because the quarterback can’t get comfortable when Shaq Bradford’s on the field,” he said. “He brings great effort and intensity every single day and that showed again tonight.”

Hendrickson was happy to be back at Graves Family Sports Complex for his first game as a head coach. He was an assistant under Drinkall when the facility opened in October, 2015.

“It was fun and exciting to be back here on Bissell Field,” he said. “It makes it really special to be here at home. I’m just lucky I get to coach these players and work with this staff. It was a lot of fun.”

Johnny Feauto admitted it wasn’t one of Kansas Wesleyan’s best outings, as evidenced by four turnovers, 12 penalties and an injury to a key player.

The No. 4-ranked Coyotes found a way to rise above all of that plus a two-hour weather delay that made for a long and disjointed affair Saturday night at Graves Family Sports Complex.

Feauto threw for 296 yards and two touchdowns, wide receiver Stevie Williams had seven catches for 223 yards and both TDs, Brandon Lowe filled in admirably for the injured Demarco Prewitt and the defense was magnificent all night long as the Coyotes rolled to a 37-12 Kansas Conference victory over Tabor.

Like the old adage says, there ain’t no bad victories.

“To be a great team you have to find ways to win when you don’t have your best stuff,” said Feauto, who was 11 of 19 passing with two first-quarter interceptions. “We turned the ball over a lot and we really didn’t play very well, especially in the first half.

“But we were able to overcome some things and get past that, and that’s what you have to do. When you don’t have your best stuff, you have to figure out how to win.”

The Coyotes (2-0) did just that.

They led 10-6 at halftime despite the four turnovers and a muffed punt but were fueled by the defense’s sterling work.

The first half dozen minutes of the second half were a different story, though, and were pivotal. Wesleyan scored 21 points in 6 minutes and 10 seconds – the first touchdown coming on the first play of the half when Feauto hit Williams with a 66-yard pass – Williams sprinting under the ball in the end zone after running past two defenders.

Tabor (1-1) went three-and-out and one play after Nick Gallardo’s 46-yard punt return, Lowe dashed into the end zone from eight yards out, making it 24-6. Two plays, two touchdowns.

After another Tabor three-and-out, Feauto completed passes of 41 and 23 yards to Williams – the second going for the third score of the quarter, giving KWU a 31-6 lead with 8:50 left.

Tabor ran one play after the ensuing kickoff before the was stopped because of lightning. Play was halted at 8:01 p.m. and didn’t resumed until 10 p.m.

Williams, a speedy transfer from Pasadena College (Calif.), was superb once again.

“Coach (Myers Hendrickson) told us to dump it to the short stuff and once they start slipping we were going to hit them over the top and that’s what we did,” Williams said. “I was just trying to get open

and Johnny and I have a real good connection. He knows where to put the ball and where I’m going to be at and I just have to catch the ball.”

“He’s great,” Feauto said of Williams. “He’s a good playmaker and I know if the ball’s going to him, he’s going to make a play on the ball.”

Williams said he wasn’t sure the game would be completed Saturday.

“I thought we were going to finish it (Sunday), I was taking off my gear, I thought the game was going to postponed,” he said. “I’m glad they didn’t and we got the win.”

The Coyotes persevered despite Prewitt’s absence the second half. He played the first half and gained 127 yards on 25 carries and a touchdown, but was injured on his final carry before the break. He didn’t play the second half, watching the action from the sideline.

Lowe, a 5-foot-6, 161-pound senior, replaced him and had 92 yards on 21 carries and two touchdowns – the second on a four-yard run with 2:16 left. KWU had 204 yards rushing and 500 total yards.

“B-Lowe stepped up and played great,” Feauto said. “I hope Prewitt will be back but if not, Lowe did an amazing job.”

“Brandon Lowe had a great second half and that speaks volumes for the five offensive linemen and the six, seven guys we play,” Hendrickson said. “They do a great job and we’ve got a lot of confidence in anyone we put out there.

“I thought we ran the ball exceptionally well against a good defense.”

While the KWU offense had several good moments, the defense was cement solid from start to finish. Tabor finished with 252 yards passing and a minus-1 yard rushing.

“The biggest number in this win is we ran for 204 (yards), they ran for negative-1,” Hendrickson said. “That’s Coyote defense, that’s Coyote offense, that’s winning football. That’s remarkable and just a great job on both sides of the football.”

Tabor freshman quarterback Trey McGee was 25 for 45 for 252 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions but his offense was one-dimensional.

He was sacked four times, twice each by ends Shaq Bradford and Anthony Munro. Running back Josh Johnson, who had 96 yards rushing against Southwestern Assemblies of God a week earlier, had nine carries for 0 yards.

“We knew coming in Tabor was going to be pretty dynamic at the quarterback position,” linebacker Jasper Chavez said. “We wanted to shut down (the running game) first and we knew (Josh Johnson) is a very good back, one of the best in the KCAC.

“We just wanted to play our base coverage, our base defense. We knew that if we stuck to our assignments that we were going to hold them up.”

KWU travels to Wichita for its first road game of the season next Saturday. Kickoff is 7 p.m. at Adair Austin Stadium. The Falcons defeated Saint Mary 21-6 in Leavenworth in their season opener Saturday. The Coyotes won last year’s game 83-0 in Salina.

WICHITA – Demarco Prewitt wasn’t himself, slowed by a rib injury he suffered a week earlier.

And with the Friends’ defense crowding the line of scrimmage, it seemed as though the Falcons were daring Kansas Wesleyan quarterback Johnny Feauto to win the game with his arm.

He did just that and did so in spectacular fashion.

Feauto threw for 411 yards and three touchdowns and the defense notched five interceptions and five sacks as the No. 4-ranked Coyotes cruised to a convincing 56-3 Kansas Conference victory Saturday night at Adair-Austin Stadium.

Feauto was 21 of 30 passing with one interception. Two wide receivers finished with more than 140 yards in receptions – Stevie Williams 146 on six catches and Johnny Carmack 143 on four. Tight end Trent Poe-Evans caught seven balls for 73 yards and two scores as the Coyotes moved virtually at will through the air.

KWU had 147 yards rushing and 558 total yards.

Feauto said Friends’ defensive strategy made his job much easier.

“When they stuff the box like that you can get out on the perimeter and we had hitches all day,” he said. “When they do that and runs are called we have the option to do that.

“The receivers did a great job getting open. … Whatever I’m thinking they do, which is pretty cool. We’re on a good page right now.”

KWU coach Myers Hendrickson wanted to Feauto get more receivers involved after completing passes to just two wide outs a week earlier against Tabor. Five caught passes Saturday.

“My goal this week was if the first read’s not there go to the second,” Feauto said. “If the second read’s not there, go to the third because someone’s usually open. If none of them are scramble and let those guys get open. … I was

just really trying to go through my reads and stay in the pocket.”

The Coyotes (3-0 overall, 2-0 KCAC) scored early and often en route to a 35-3 halftime lead.

Feauto ran for the Coyotes’ first touchdown on a three-yard run on their first possession, five plays after the first of Takota Anderson’s two interception. Three possessions later Prewitt scored from the 5, one play after Feauto connected with Williams on a 48-yard completion.

KWU scored three touchdowns the second quarter – Feauto’s 50-yard pass to Williams, Richard McCauley’s 19-yard run on a jet sweep and Prewitt’s four-yard run.

Feauto hit Poe-Evans with a 12-yard scoring passing and ran seven yards for another TD in the third quarter, extending the lead to 49-3. He capped his night with a six-yard touchdown toss to Poe-Evans early in the fourth quarter.

“I was really proud of how we took what the defense gave us and continued to move the ball,” Hendrickson said. “Johnny was incredible tonight, he just made play after play. When the ball’s in his hands you always feel that something good’s going to happen. He’s a playmaker.”

Poe-Evans was shutout against Tabor but looked like himself Saturday.

“I had a lot of adrenalin running and I guess I just got more looks tonight,” he said.

Hendrickson said Prewitt felt better as the week went on and carried the ball 18 times Saturday. He was injured on the final play of the first half against Tabor and didn’t play the second half.

“He’s gotten better every day and felt really good tonight,” Hendrickson said. “Just getting back into it was the big key.”

The Wesleyan defense was equally spectacular, once again. In addition to the interceptions and sacks, Friends quarterbacks Dan Dawdy and Joshua Morris were a combined 7 of 31 passing for 41 yards. The Falcons (1-1) had just 170 total yards.

“We came out wanting to get turnovers,” said Anderson, the Coyotes’ free safety. “It’s easy to read the quarterback and he made it easier for me. After dropping one last week I needed to get one back.”

Linebacker Warren Singletary had a career night with 14 tackles while Charles Barnes III had seven and an interception. Shaq Bradford and Daniel Killian had 1.5 sacks each.

“That was total team defense,” Hendrickson said. “I was so fired up on the sideline seeing our guys execute at such a high level. It was the front seven and it was the secondary, all 11 players were making those interceptions happen.

“Warren was all over the place. He plays the game the right way, he’s what an inside backer should look like. He plays the position very well and has a great feel for the game.”

The Coyotes play rival Bethany at 2 p.m. Saturday at Graves Family Sports Complex in their next game. The Swedes (1-1) defeated Saint Mary 21-12 Saturday night in Lindsborg.

Johnny Feauto, Demarco Prewitt, Richard McCauley and the rest of Kansas Wesleyan’s offense was typically sensational.

It was the play of the defense that stole the show, though, in a 51-0 rout of arch rival Bethany in the First Bank Kansas Smoky Hill Showdown on Saturday afternoon at Graves Family Sports Complex.

It was the Coyotes’ fifth consecutive victory and the seventh in the last eight games against the rival Swedes.

The KWU defense stifled Bethany at every juncture from start to finish, limiting the Swedes to 93 yards total offense that included an incredible minus-3 yards rushing. They had eight first downs for the game – one the first half to go along with 17 total yards.

Wesleyan preserved the shutout when Tevin Jones blocked Wyatt Townsend’s 27-yard field goal attempt late in the game. It was the Coyotes’ first shutout victory over Bethany since October 6, 1962 (14-0).

“Today marked the first of many to come,” said senior defensive end Anthony Munro, who had a team-best six tackles, three for loss including a sack. “We’re going to be doing this a whole lot more. We finally hit on all cylinders and it’s good we got it out now. We’ve got a great opponent next week (Ottawa).”

“I was so proud of that group,” KWU coach Myers Hendrickson said. “We played lights out football, one of the best defensive performances I’ve ever seen. They deserved the shutout and they got the shutout.”

Bethany quarterback Austin Denson was 13 of 24 passing for 96 yards, one interception, was sacked four times and under pressure most of the game. His 45-yard pass to Rodney Molette in the third quarter accounted for nearly half of the Swedes’ total offense.

Tayden Lucero was Bethany’s leading rusher with six yards on four carries.

“Our coaches had us prepared going in,” Munro said. “Watching film and our scout team does a great job of

keeping us ready for the game.

“We kept them one-dimensional. We knew if we stopped the run and made them pass our DBs (defensive backs) would lock it up.”

Munro said the defensive line isn’t necessarily focused on sacks.

“We’re unselfish,” he said. “As long as we’re swarming and get them running around we know someone’s going to make the play. You saw the linebackers flying in trying to get their own sacks, too. We just like to go hunting.”

“It starts up front with our defensive line stopping the run,” Hendrickson said. “That made them one-dimensional. I thought the linebackers played really well helping the run defense and getting to the quarterback and making him make decisions to get the ball out. And the secondary played incredible.”

Wesleyan’s offense shifted into fifth gear in the second quarter, led by Prewitt, who had 93 yards rushing on 14 carries. He had 264 yards rushing and six touchdowns against Bethany last fall in Lindsborg and finished with 110 yards on 23 carries and three touchdowns Saturday.

Leading 10-0 after one quarter, Prewitt scored from the 13-yard line, hurdling a Bethany defender at the 5 and diving over the goal line, with 13:30 left before halftime. He added a nine-yard scoring jaunt on the Coyotes’ next possession and finished with a two-yard jog into the end zone with 37 seconds left in the half, giving KWU a 37-0 halftime lead.

“Prewitt at his worst is very, very good,” Feauto said. “He stepped up and played like he has all year and last year. He’s a warrior.”

“It was like he caught his second wind there in the second quarter and started carrying the football very effectively,” Hendrickson said.

KWU scored on its first two possessions of the second half – a 38-yard touchdown pass to Johnny Carmack with 12:57 left in the third quarter and an 11-yard screen pass to Brandon Lowe with 6:19 left, capping a 98-yard, 13-play drive.

“I thought the way we controlled the clock right there and the way we finished with a touchdown was really like microcosm of the game,” Hendrickson said. “We already had a dominant lead and I think that drive solidified us as an offense.”

Feauto tipped his hat to the defense as well.

“We really get going because of them,” he said. “They’re so energetic and have so much fun and that really gets us going. (Bethany) got one first down the first half and that is incredible.”

McCauley had a monstrous game from his wide out perch, catching seven passes for 116 yards and a touchdown – a 16 yarder from Feauto late in the first quarter that made it 10-0.

McCauley’s effort was pivotal with leading receiver Stevie Williams out because of an ankle injury.

Wesleyan had 541 total yards – 265 rushing, 276 passing – and didn’t have a turnover.

Backup placekicker Juan Herrera converted six of seven extra points after Jhonatan Morales suffered a leg injury on a kickoff in the first quarter. The injury came moments after he’d kicked a 33-yard field goal that gave KWU a 3-0 lead.

“Just a great team win,” Hendrickson said.

Neither a lengthy rain delay at the start, thick fog in the second half, three turnovers, an early deficit, a large and loud Ottawa crowd or Connor Kaegi could stop the Kansas Wesleyan Coyotes from their appointed conquest.

Demarco Prewitt rushed for 142 yards and three touch-downs, Johnny Feauto threw for 257 yards and two TDs, and the defense turned in another superb effort as No. 4 KWU held on a 38-21 Kansas Conference road victory over Ottawa on Saturday night.

The No. 4 Coyotes improved to 5-0 overall, 4-0 in the KCAC, in their toughest challenge to date. They’re tied for first with Bethel in the conference standings after the surpris-ing Threshers defeated previously unbeaten Sterling 31-26 Saturday in North Newton.

Wesleyan’s game at AdventHealth Field in Ottawa was scheduled to start at 6 p.m., didn’t begin until 8 because of heavy rain and lightning. It was the Braves’ home opener after two road games. The Coyotes immediately fell behind 7-0 as Kaegi, Ottawa’s talented 6-foot-7 senior quarterback, threw 29-yard touch-down pass to Karim Powell on the game’s opening drive.

The next 24 points belonged to KWU, though.

Feauto hit Trenton Poe-Evans with a 33-yard touchdown pass; Prewitt scored from the 2-yard line two plays after Charles Barnes III blocked a Kaegi punt and recovered it at the Ottawa 4; Feauto hit Stevie Williams with a 15-yard scoring pass; and Juan Herrera kicked a 30-yard field goal that gave KWU a 24-7 halftime lead. Kaegi struck again with a five-yard touchdown pass to Santino Gee with 8:55 left in the third quarter but Wesleyan responded five players later when Prewitt scored from the one. The touchdown came one play after a 50-yard flea flicker pass from Feauto to Williams.

Prewitt scored his third touchdown on a three-yard with 26 seconds left in the third quarter for a 31-14 lead.

Kaegi made it close again with a 44-yard touchdown pass to Colton Davis on the second play of the fourth quarter

but the Coyote defense put the clamps on the Braves the rest of way.

Following a Feauto fumble that Ottawa recovered at the KWU 29-yard line, the defense held on downs at the 31.

The Braves (1-2 overall and KCAC) returned the favor, holding the Coyotes on downs at their own 25-yard line and Kaegi promptly drove them to the Wesleyan 2. Ottawa managed a minus-1 yard on the next four plays, though – Kaegi’s pass into the end zone falling incomplete on fourth down with 1:39 left. “Resiliency is what I saw,” KWU coach Myers Hendrickson said. “I saw resiliency overcoming adversity, our players kept playing. “There were things that happened that were out of our control but we control what we can control. We beat a good team on the road … and we overcame a lot to come out on top tonight.” Cornerback Tevin Jones led Wesleyan’s defense with 10 tackles, two for loss, while linebackers Jasper Chavez and Warren Singletary had nine and seven stops, respectively. Singletary had 3.5 tackles for loss and Chavez 1.5.

“The defense played amazing the whole night all the way down to the very end,” Hendrickson said. “The goal line stand I thought that was huge. Offense put the defense in some tough spots and all the defense did was continue to respond and keep playing.

“Tevin played a fantastic game, Jasper played a fantastic game. Our secondary played great because they were up for a big challenge. (Kaegi) is a special player. I think it starts up front, we made him uncomfortable but our secondary did a great job.” Hendrickson said the contest swung in KWU’s favor on Barnes’ blocked punt. “Special teams were huge all night but that’s the one that changed the entire game,” he said. “Huge special teams play, huge momentum swing and really kind of settled us on both sides of the ball and we played Coyote football the rest of the half.” Wesleyan’s offense was balanced, finishing with 467 total yards, 210 rushing and 257 passing, while Ottawa had 370 total yards, 240 passing.

Kaegi, the NAIA’s second-leading passer, was 27 of 45 for 240 yards, three touchdowns, no interceptions and 25 yards rushing. Feauto was 11 of 29 for 257 yards, two touchdowns, one interception and 40 yards rushing.

The Coyotes are idle next Saturday and return to action October 12 when they play Saint Mary for Homecoming. Kickoff is 2 p.m. at Graves Family Sports Complex

Johnny Feauto pass arched toward the end zone and an assembling crowd anxiously awaiting its arrival.

As the ball neared the ground a singular figure, Kansas Wesleyan’s athlete extraordinaire Charles Barnes III, soared above the mob and grabbed the pass before being yanked to the ground.

His 47-yard catch just across the goal line on the final play of the first half was the Coyotes’ seventh touchdown of the game and by far the most difficult.

It gave them an insurmountable 48-0 halftime lead and they rolled on unabated the second half en route to a record-setting 90-0 Kansas Conference and Homecoming victory Saturday afternoon at Graves Family Sports Complex in front of a new Graves Family Sports Complex record crowd of 2137.

The 90 points set a KCAC single-game record, breaking the old mark of 87. Their 793 total yards – 377 rushing and 416 passing – also set a single-game conference record.

“Dominant, that’s the only way to describe,” KWU coach Myers Hendrickson said of the No. 2 Coyotes’ sixth victory in six games and fifth in KCAC play. “You come off a bye week and you try get things fixed, you try to focus on the fundamentals. You self-scout, you try to improve in every phase of the game and I can say we did.”

Did they ever.

Feauto has been consistently superb during his 20-game KWU career but was never better than Saturday. He was 19 of 26 passing for 397 yards, six touchdowns, no interceptions and rushed for 35 yards on seven carries in two-and-a-half quarters of play.

Demarco Prewitt rushed for 127 yards on 23 carries and a touchdown the first half but didn’t play the second half. Ten receivers caught passes, led by Richard McCauley and Trent Poe-Evans with four each.

The reserves also sparkled. Running back Brandon Lowe ran for three touchdowns in the third quarter and freshman quarterback Peyton Farrington threw his first collegiate touchdown pass, an 11-yarder to Ryan Buresh, in the fourth quarter.

Defensively the Coyotes were close to perfect, allowing just 42 total yards on 53 plays, including a minus-7 yards rushing on 24 tries. The Spires managed just four first downs.

“Holding a team to under 50 yards of total offense in a 60-minute game and four first downs is incredible,” Hendrickson said.

Most of the Coyotes’ starters departed in the third quarter and none played the final 15 minutes.

“I think we just ended up wearing them down,” Feauto said. “Once they were worn down we were able to do whatever we wanted.”

He credited the offensive line for taking control.

“When you have Eli (Smith) and Fletch (Daniel Fletcher) and Alex (Gutierrez) all those guys hitting you every play you’re going to soften up pretty quick.”

The play everyone was buzzing about, though, was the Hail Mary just before halftime. Barnes is starting linebacker but is used on the play because of leaping ability.

It came after a KWU time out with 4 seconds left.

“We practice that every week,” Feauto said. “Rich (McCauley) usually catches it, I don’t think CB3 has caught one. The only time CB tried it he dropped it. That was just amazing, he went up and grabbed it out of the sky. That’s why he’s out there.”

“The ball went up in the air and I was just looking it,” Barnes said. “Then the wind blew it to my left so I just repositioned over and went up and got it.

“All their players were grabbing on me, they were more focused on grabbing me than the ball, I think. But either way, if they’d have jumped up I probably still would have come down with the ball because I want the ball more.”

Hendrickson said the Coyotes work on the play every Friday.

“It’s all about situational football,” he said. “It’s a situation that we practice every week. We had an opportunity to actually use it in a game and wanted to take advantage of it. “We have confidence in it and Charles Barnes is obviously one of the best athletes in our program. We put him out there in a jump ball situation and it worked out.”

Just about everything else the Coyotes did also worked out.

They led 20-0 after one quarter on Feauto-to-Johnny Carmack touchdown passes of 31 and 43 yards and a 67-yarder to a wide open Stevie Williams who jogged into the end zone.

Feauto hit Poe-Evans with a 9-yard TD strike to start the second quarter, Prewitt scored from 1, Feauto hit Poe-Evans again from 2 yards out and ended the half with the bomb to Barnes.

Takota Anderson intercepted a pass – his third of the season – and returned it 41 yards for a touchdown to start the third quarter. Lowe followed with scoring runs of 4, 1 and 7 yards.

Quincy Sandoval had a 6-yard touchdown run and Farrington’s TD pass to Buresh accounted for the final 14 points in the fourth quarter.

Saint Mary’s offense struggled mightily all day. Freshman quarterbacks Troy Temmink and Jalil Grimes were a combined 12 of 29 for 49 yards, two interceptions and were under intense pressure the entire game. Running back Matthew Graham had 27 yards rushing on 18 carries.

The Coyotes had just two sacks but produced seven tackles for loss. Linebackers Jasper Chavez and Warren Singletary had seven and five tackles, respectively.

It was KWU’s second shutout of the season; they entered the game allowing an average of 12 points a game.

“We don’t stay long on a victory, we’re always looking to improve,” said Barnes, who had four tackles, one for loss. “We focus on the things that we mess up every game so each week we’re going to get better. We make our weaknesses our strengths.”

The task figure to be incrementally more difficult for the next two weeks. The Coyotes travel to Winfield next Saturday to play Southwestern, starting at 1 p.m., then go to Kansas City, Mo., on October 26 for a 1 p.m. game against Avila.

“It’s nice to have all those points and yards and records and everything but at the end of the day it’s still 1-0,” Hendrickson said. “We went 1-0 today but we did it in a big way. I’m proud that we improved during our bye week and came out and made it count.”

WINFIELD – Southwestern’s defense managed to slow Demarco Prewitt and Kansas Wesleyan’s running game.

So, the Coyotes did what you’d would expect the No. 2-ranked team in the country to do – turn to its irrepressible passing attack.

Johnny Feauto threw for 395 yards and four touchdowns, and four wide receivers totaled at least 64 yards in receptions as KWU rolled to a 45-21 Kansas Conference victory Saturday afternoon at Richard Jantz Stadium.

KWU improved to 7-0 overall, 6-0 in the KCAC, while Southwestern fell to 3-4 and 3-3.

Southwestern’s defense limited Prewitt to 62 yards on 24 carries and the Coyotes to 128 yards rushing on 38 attempts as a team but it wasn’t nearly enough to contain KWU’s offense.

Feauto was 27 of 37 passing with one interception. He has 27 touchdown tosses on the season.

“Thank you, we appreciate that, we love that,” wide out Richard McCauley said of Southwestern’s strategy. “We know we can do both (run and pass). Prewitt runs the ball really, really well and we can all catch the ball, we can all run. You respect one and don’t respect the other we’ll just make you pay.” McCauley caught eight passes for 113 yards, Trenton Poe-Evans eight for 64 yards and two touchdowns, Johnny Carmack five for 111 yards and a score; and Stevie Williams four for 93 yards and two TDs.

“We’ve got some different weapons out there on the perimeter and when Demarco Prewitt runs the ball it forces the defense to do some things schematically that allows us to take some shots with some receivers,” KWU coach Myers Hendrickson said. “We had a lot of guys who stepped up today.”

Feauto, who was the KCAC Offensive Player of the Week after throwing six touchdown passes against Saint Mary last Saturday, said it was a matter of taking what was available.“A back like Prewitt they’re going to do everything they can to stop him,” he said. “We’ve got to be able to run solid routes and get open and the receivers did a good job. Stevie can beat anybody deep, Carmack played great today and Rich stepped up big. We got tight ends involved, Poe-Evans played great.”

Feauto said his job was easy given the time he had to survey the field before throwing.

“The O-Line gave me a ton of time,” he said. “They’d blitz and I’d

still have about three seconds to throw. When that happens you can find a lot of holes in the defense.”

Prewitt scored the first of his two touchdowns on a 1-yard run with 3:02 left in the first quarter, giving the Coyotes a 7-0 lead.

Southwestern answered on a 71-yard pass from William Mueller to Brooks Shannon on the first play of the second quarter, tying the game at 7.

The Coyotes promptly responded three plays later when Feauto found Williams for a 35-yard touchdown on the fourth play of the second quarter. They had connected on a 38-yard gain on the play before.

That began a 24-point blitz in the quarter that gave KWU a 31-7 halftime lead. Prewitt scored again from the 1, one play after Feauto hit Carmack for a 55-yard gain. Takota Anderson’s first of two interceptions on the day gave the Coyotes possession at the Southwestern 22, and Feauto and Poe-Evans hooked up for a 22-yard touchdown two plays later, making it 28-7 with 6:49 left in the quarter. Juan Herrera’s 19-yard field goal on the final play of the half accounted for the final three points.

Feauto’s touchdown pass to Williams after the Southwestern score was pivotal, according to the players.

“Man, that was huge,” McCauley said. “That’s what Stevie brings us, the deep ball. Every single play he’s a deep ball threat. Just having him out there on the other side is really, really nice.”

“We had to kill their momentum,” Feauto said. “They had that big touchdown pass and we knew we couldn’t give them hope. So, we marched down and got that big score. It was huge for our morale and it was big to break theirs.”

Hendrickson said the second quarter explosion was decisive.

“That 24 points in the second quarter is when we took control of the game,” he said. “And the defense played really well throughout the course of the second quarter as well. I think that’s when we controlled it.”

Southwestern got within 17 twice in the third quarter. Caleb Helsley intercepted a Feauto pass on the first play of the second half and returned it 60 yards for a touchdown, making it 31-14.

The Coyotes then drove 75 yards in 10 plays, Poe-Evans catching a 4-yard touchdown pass from Feauto that made it 38-14 with 10:34 left in the quarter.

Southwestern cut it 17 again two plays later when Jaquils Coleman ran 67 yards for a touchdown, cutting the deficit to 38-21 with 9:40 remaining.

Feauto connected with Williams for an 11-yard touchdown with 1:11 left in the quarter for the final points of the game – the seven-play, 61-yard drive highlighted by Feauto’s 40-yard pass to McCauley.

The Coyotes’ defense surrendered 305 total yards and allowed 14 points on the day. Southwestern’s freshmen quarterbacks Mueller and Yizalle Whitfield were a combined 9 of 21 passing for 159 yards – Rashaan Broomfield grabbing one along with Anderson’s pair, giving him five for the season. Senior end Shaq Bradford had a team-best six tackles that included two more sacks.

“The defense played fantastic,” Hendrickson said. “We’ll take it anyway we can get it. Twenty-one points is not a representation of how well our defense played, offense was responsible for some of those.

“Defensively we were getting to the football and flying around and they had a couple of big plays. Takota Anderson plays incredible football, he’s a ballhawk back there. He does a great job getting to the football. Our pass defense was fantastic and the run defense was dominant, like usual..

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Kansas Wesleyan’s irrepressible offense has seldom been better, and it couldn’t have come at a more opportune time.

Johnny Feauto threw five touchdown passes, Demarco Prewitt rushed for 212 yards and two scores, and Stevie Williams caught six passes for 206 yards and three TDs as the No. 2-ranked Coyotes escaped with a heart-stopping 48-47 Kansas Conference victory over Avila on Saturday afternoon at Zarda Family Multisport Complex.

KWU didn’t secure its eighth victory of the season, seventh in the KCAC, until a 2-point conversion pass from Avila quarterback John Jacobs to Christian Hopkins fell incomplete in the back of the end zone with 1:39 left in the game, preserving a 48-47 lead.

The Coyotes finished with 643 total yards, and needed every one to prevail.

“Just an incredible effort from our young men, just kept playing all the way to the very end,” Coach Myers Hendrickson said. “We knew we were going to play a very good offensive team on the road that was coming off a bye (week) and had time. This was their Super Bowl and we found a way to win the game.”

It wasn’t easy, though. Jacobs, a sophomore, threw for 337 yards and six touchdowns, and wide out Devin Senerious had 10 catches for 187 yards and three touchdowns as the Eagles totaled 452 yards.

“Coach Mick (John Michaletti, defensive coordinator) and I were talking on the sideline and a lot of times it was great defense but just a perfect throw – dropping the ball in some pretty impressive places,” Hendrickson said of Jacobs. “Hats off to him, he made some great plays.”

The Coyotes also overcame four turnovers – two fumbles and two interceptions – and 14 penalties for 167 yards.

Hendrickson was especially pleased with the way his team didn’t wilt.

“It was a playoff-type atmosphere,” he said. “Things aren’t going to go your way, you’re playing a good team and a very, very talented

quarterback.”

Feauto was 18 of 32 passing for 414 yards. Four of his five touchdown passes covered at least 41 yards. Prewitt, KWU’s All-American senior tailback who was limited to 62 yards on 24 carries last week at Southwestern, had his best game of the season with his yardage total coming on a whopping 44 carries. He scored on a 9-yard run in the second quarter and a 3-yard run in the third quarter.

“It was an outstanding football game by Demarco Prewitt,” Hendrickson said. “We put it in his hands and said ‘go win the game’ and that’s what he did over and over and over again. The offensive line did a fantastic job blocking, being very physical, and Demarco Prewitt did the rest.”

The Coyotes led most of the game but couldn’t put the Eagles resilient away. KWU took a 14-12 advantage into the second quarter after Feauto’s first touchdown pass to Williams that went 49 yards, and a 59-yard strike to Johnny Carmack.

They had a 27-20 halftime lead as Feauto and Poe-Evans connected on a 12-yard touchdown pass and Prewitt’s first scoring run. Prewitt’s second touchdown and Feauto’s 84-yard touchdown bomb to Williams gave the Coyotes a 41-27 lead going into the fourth quarter. Feauto’s 60-yarder to Williams with 10:37 left proved to be game winner.

The Coyotes had scoring drives of 69, 73, 80 and 97 yards in the first half and the second half included a 98-yard drive.

“When you’re backed up (in field position) it flips the whole mindset,” Hendrickson said of the long drives. “That kind of kept us upbeat and kept us excited. We said ‘hey, we can score if we do our job.’”

Hendrickson said the defense was forced to overcome some field position obstacles. Avila’s first touchdown came after a Feauto interception was returned to the KWU 1-yard line.

“At times we could have given ourselves a little bit more of a buffer, a little bit more of a lead,” he said. “Our defense played hard all the way down to the last snap. If we wouldn’t have it would have been a different score.”

The Coyotes face another surging team next Saturday when McPherson comes to Graves Family Sports Complex for a 1 p.m. game. The Bulldogs (5-3 overall, 5-2 KCAC) defeated Saint Mary 49-27 Saturday in Leavenworth and has won five in a row.

KWU goes back on the road in two weeks to play No. 21 Sterling in Sterling. The Warriors were idle Saturday.

“I told our team after the game that this was an incredible win but it’s not going to going to get any easier,” Hendrickson said. “But there’s no group I’d rather do it with than these me here.”

Johnny Feauto and the rest of the Kansas Wesleyan offense knew McPherson boasted the fourth-ranked passing defense in the NAIA entering their game Saturday.

Challenge accepted.

Feauto, the NAIA’s leader in passing yardage and total offense,

threw for 329 yards and five touchdowns as the No. 3-ranked Coyotes rolled to an impressive 48-14 Kansas Conference rout at Graves Family Sports Complex.

Feauto was 16 of 20 passing and did all his damage in the first half as KWU stormed to a 41-0 halftime lead. He then donned a green baseball hat and watched the second half from the sideline along with several other starters.

McPherson entered the contest allowing an average of 140 yards passing per game but couldn’t contain Feauto and Co.

“We’re confident in all of our receivers and just going over the top (of the defense),” Feauto said. “We’ve been doing it all year so it doesn’t matter who we play against. We’re going to keep doing what we’ve been doing.”

The victory raises KWU’s record to 9-0, 8-0 in the KCAC. McPherson, which had won its previous five games, falls to 5-3.

After a slow start Feauto found his rhythm on the third drive of the game. KWU went 99 yards in 10 plays aided by two defensive pass interference calls on the Bulldogs. Feauto capped the drive with a 1-yard touchdown pass to Trenton Poe-Evans -- the first of his four scoring receptions on the day.

The second quarter might have been the Coyotes’ best of the season. They scored 34 points, four on passing touchdown, three to Poe-Evans. They shredded McPherson’s defense for 380 total yards on 41 plays the first half – an eye-popping 9.3 yards per play.

After Demarco Prewitt scored from the 1 to make it 13-0 with 12:42 left in the half, Feauto’s barrage began. He threw a 60-yard scoring strike Poe-Evans, then 15-yards to Poe-Evans, a 30-yarder to Stevie Williams and 38 yards to Poe-Evans with 18 seconds left before the break.

Feauto said his job’s easy with Poe-Evans and Williams on the field. Poe-Evans had six receptions for 147 yards and Williams five for 150 yards.

“When the ball’s out to them one-on-one they’re either coming down with it or it’s going to be pass interference, and I feel confident in that every time I throw it to them one-on-one,” he said.

“We were really firing on all cylinders in the passing game,” Poe-Evans said. “Stevie played great, Rich (McCauley) played great …

we were all finding ways to get open and our O-line was getting a good push.”

KWU coach Myers Hendrickson was understandably pleased and impressed.

“The second quarter was the best quarter we’ve played all year and probably the first half was the best half we’ve played all year,” he said. “Our defense put us in good positions and offensively we were able to take some shots down the field and were accurate about it.”

Hendrickson said the Coyotes exploited what McPherson was doing defensively.

“They started to cheat their safety over the top of Stevie Williams and Poe-Evans was able to go down the seam and get some huge plays,” he said. “Our motto on offense is ‘take what the defense gives you’ and that’s what we did.”

Defensively the Coyotes were equally impressive.

The Bulldogs finished with 217 total yards. Quarterback Ed Crouch was 15 of 39 for 158 yards, two interceptions, was sacked nine times that lost 56 yards and under constant pressure the rest of the time. He also rushed for 12 yards on 19 carries and a touchdown.

KWU’s lone second-half touchdown came when linebacker Charles Barnes, III picked up a Crouch fumble and ran 23 yards for a touchdown with 9:01 left in the third quarter.

McPherson scored on the final play of the third quarter and again midway through the final period.

Senior end Shaq Bradford said he and his defensive teammates were determined to play well after giving up 47 points a week earlier against Avila.

“We knew we had a pretty poor performance last week and wanted to make the statement that we are the top defense and that’s what we came to do,” said Bradford, who had 1.5 sacks. “We communicated throughout the whole game, everybody knew what they had to do and we all did our job. We kept it real simple. We played a complete game.”

“Defense played phenomenal,” Hendrickson said. “We played a great quarterback last week (John Jacobs), I’m not so sure we played a better one this week and the defense played their best game of the year.”

Hendrickson said his team succeeded in getting pressure on Crouch.

“We kept him very uncomfortable the whole game,” he said. “Our defense did a great job containing him so they were able to get sacks – the most sacks we’ve had all year against the most athletic quarterback we’ve played.”

Bradford said he and his teammates were inspired to play for former Coyote head coach Matt Drinkall, whose mother passed away October 21.

“I put her initials on my cleats and I definitely did that for her and my grandpa that passed last year,” he said.

Bradford also was upset the Coyotes dropped from second to third in the NAIA coach poll after their one-point victory over Avila.

“I told the guys before the game I’m (angry) about it, I didn’t like that, they don’t respect us,” he said. “I told them before this game started we need to make a statement.”

The Coyotes will try and secure their second consecutive KCAC title next Saturday when they travel to Sterling to play the No. 21-ranked Warriors. Sterling defeated Southwestern 20-17 in overtime Saturday in Sterling. The Warriors tied with the game 17-17 on a 64-yard touchdown pass with 1½ minutes left in regulation and won with a field goal in overtime.

“Sterling at their place, it’s the only grass field in this conference,” Feauto said. “It’s a big game, we’re looking forward to it. This one’s over and we’ve got to go 1-0 next week.”

STERLING – It took Kansas Wesleyan exactly three plays to serve notice the 2019 Kansas Conference football championship was not leaving Salina.

Johnny Feauto’s 71-yard touchdown pass to Johnny Carmack 53 seconds into the game launched the No. 3-ranked Coyotes and they never looked back on their way to a decisive 38-13 victory over No. 23 Sterling on Saturday afternoon at Smisor Stadium.

The victory clinched the second consecutive KCAC title for Wesleyan, which improved to 10-0 overall and 9-0 in conference play. The Coyotes conclude the regular season next Saturday with a 1 p.m. game against Bethel on Senior Day at Graves Family Sports Complex.

KWU won last year’s title under Coach Matt Drinkall and did it again Saturday under new head coach Myers Hendrickson, who was doused with water along with several assistant coaches by jubilant Coyote players as the game ended.

Feauto, the NAIA’s total offense and passing leader, found Carmack all alone on the left side on a third down-and-6 play. Carmack caught the pass and continued on unhurried and uncontested into the end zone with 14:07 left in the quarter.

“Johnny knew they were going to switch off (coverage of him) and got past both (defenders),” Feauto said. “He made a great read on that and I was able to find him. Right after that we were like ‘all right, we’re settled in, we’re going to go get this.’”

“It was huge,” Hendrickson said of the quick touchdown. “We were in a third down right away and got a man-to-man look and Johnny Carmack came open on it. It was a great read by Johnny Feauto. It was a great start to the game.”

Feauto was just getting started. He finished the game 15 of 28 passing for 267 yards, three touchdowns and ran 5 yards for a fourth TD.

KWU went up 14-0 on its next possession, driving 46 yards on 11 plays and scoring on Prewitt’s 1-yard run with 5:02 left in the opening quarter.

The lead grew to 24-0 early in the second quarter as Feauto threw 12-yard touchdown pass superback Roy Sanders and Juan Herrera’s 30-yard field goal. Both scores came after interceptions by Scott Helsper and Charles Barnes III.

After Sterling scored to make it 24-7 with 5:06 left in the half, the Coyotes responded on Feauto’s touchdown run with 1:54 remaining. It capped a 65-yard, nine-play drive and gave KWU a 31-7 halftime lead.

Wesleyan’s lone second-half touchdown came with 16 seconds left in the third quarter on Feauto’s 8-yard touchdown pass to Trent Poe-Evans on fourth-and-goal, giving the Coyotes a nearly

insurmountable 38-7 advantage entering the final quarter.

Prewitt, who finished with 142 yards on 33 carries, found more room to run the second half, the result of KWU’s big offensive line taking control of the line of scrimmage. He had 93 yards on 17 carries the final 30 minutes.

“We started wearing them down,” Prewitt said. “Coach said we were going to keep pounding the rock and trusted me to do it. The O-line was really good, we’re big up front and we knew we were going to wear them down and handle them at the end of the game.”

Sterling focused its defense on stopping wide receiver Stevie Williams but Richard McCauley and Prewitt made the Warriors pay. McCauley caught seven passes for 122 yards while Williams had two catches for 14 yards but more importantly kept Twon Collymore, Sterling’s best defensive back, occupied most of the game.

“That’s what we do, we’re just a versatile wide receiver group and everybody can play,” McCauley said. “They were a good defense and we knew it would be a game. We just had to take care of what we have to take care of. It’s what I say every week, it’s not about them, it’s just about us executing.”

“Richard McCauley was incredible the whole day,” Hendrickson said. “His seven catches were huge. They were third downs and critical situations over the middle on some dig routes. Also had him blocking their best defensive back throughout the course of the game and he did a great job with that, too.”

KWU finished with 427 total yards – 267 passing and 160 rushing. Sterling (7-2 overall and KCAC) had 239 total yards but only 55 rushing.

The Warriors played without starting quarterback Cedrick Phillips and running back Ce’von Mitchell-Ford, who were out with injuries. Phillips suffered a torn rotator cuff while making a tackle after throwing an interception against Southwestern a week earlier.

His backup Eric Butler, who earned All-KCAC Honorable Mention honors as Sterling’s quarterback last season, moved over from wide receiver and was 18 of 35 for 239 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. He was sacked five times, four by Shaq Bradford, who has 17.5 on the year.

“It didn’t make any difference,” Bradford said of the quarterback change. “Whoever has the ball that’s who we’re going to try to tackle. We see ball, we get ball.”

“Butler is very talented, he’s very good,” Hendrickson said. “He throws it very well and I thought for us to be able to get to the passer and get those sacks was huge.”

Hendrickson, who served as an assistant under Drinkall during the 2014 and 2015 seasons, was thrilled to win the conference championship in his first season.

“I’m just proud of everyone associated with Coyote football,” he said. “Our players most importantly, our assistant coaches, our mangers … everybody associated with Coyote football had a huge piece of this. It truly is a great day for Kansas Wesleyan.”

“It feels awesome,” said Feauto, who led the Coyotes to last year’s KCAC title, a berth in the NAIA semifinals and 13-1 record. “I came to Kansas Wesleyan for a reason and that was to not lose a lot of games, and that’s exactly what’s happened.”

Bethel (8-2 overall, 7-2 KCAC) trounced Saint Mary 48-3 Saturday and has won four in a row. The game is huge for KWU in terms of seeding for the NAIA playoffs – a loss could result in a first-round road game.

“We’re in the playoffs but now we want to make sure we secure that seed that we want and do what we can to get a home game,” Hendrickson said.

“We’ve got bigger and better goals we have to focus on,” McCauley said.

Senior Day festivities, the final regular season home game of his career and a large group of family members in the stands didn’t hinder Demarco Prewitt and his Kansas Wesleyan teammates from

finishing the mission.

Led by a balanced offensive thrust and resilient defensive effort the No. 3-ranked Coyotes took control early and never looked back en route to a 61-31 demolition of No. 25 Bethel on Saturday at Graves Family Sports Complex.

The victory gave KWU its second consecutive 11-0 regular season, including a 10-0 record against Kansas Conference competition.

More importantly it puts the Coyotes in line for a home game next Saturday in the first round of the NAIA playoffs. The 16-team field and first-round sites will be announced at 6 p.m. Sunday. A watch party is scheduled for 6 p.m. in the Student Activities Center on the KWU campus. The Facebook show will be streamed live on the big TV in the SAC.

Prewitt, the Coyotes’ All-America senior tailback, rushed for 146 yards and scored four touchdowns, Johnny Feauto threw for 293 yards and four touchdowns – two to Stevie Williams who had highlight reel day with seven catches for 126 yards, including one that was Sports Center-worthy.

“It was a very memorable Senior Day,” said Prewitt, the KCAC’s leading rusher. “It’s a blessing to be here, it’s a blessing to play the way I did today. I’m honored to be part of this and part of this team.”

Any concerns about Senior Day distractions or possible trap game against a Thresher team that had won four in a row quickly evaporated. The Coyotes took the opening kickoff, drove 62 yards on 11 plays and took a 7-0 lead on Prewitt’s 5-yard run.

They made it 14-0 on their second possession, going 89 yards seven plays – Feauto hitting Williams with an 8-yard touchdown pass.

After Bethel scored, KWU scored twice on Feauto passes to Superback Roy Sanders from 21 and 1 yard out, giving the Coyotes a 27-10 halftime advantage.

The first touchdown of the second quarter was set up on a pass from Johnny Carmack to Williams, who made a spectacular one-handed catch while battling a Bethel defender. Carmack took a handoff from Feauto on an apparent reverse but stopped and threw to Williams, who was sprinting down the right sideline.

“I ran the route and looked up, saw the ball was kind of over my head so I kind of made the catch with one hand,” said Williams, who gained 35 yards on the play and gave KWU a first down at the Bethel 11-yard line. “I brought it in with one hand and started bobbling it and the opposing team grabbed it. So I just grabbed it

out of his hands and just fell down with it.”

“That was an incredible catch,” KWU coach Myers Hendrickson said. “I loved the catch in person and on the field, I can’t wait to see it on film. When you’ve got weapons like that you let your playmakers go make plays and that’s what they did.”

The Coyotes scored three touchdowns in the third quarter, the first two on Prewitt runs of 4 and 7 yards, giving them a 47-17 lead entering the final period.

Prewitt scored his fourth touchdown on a 6-yard run early in the quarter and Brandon Lowe’s 1-yard run capped the Coyotes’ scoring.

Bethel (8-3 overall, 7-3 KCAC) entered the game ranked second in the KCAC against the run, allowing an average of 91 yards per game, but the Coyotes had 209.

“Demarco Prewitt and our senior-led offensive line,” Hendrickson said. “You believe in them, you trust them and they made plays and they were phenomenal the whole day.”

Feauto had yet another monstrous game. The NAIA’s total offense and passing leader completed 22 of 28 passes to eight different receivers, and also rushed for 58 yards on seven carries in his last regular-season game.

“Johnny Feauto is playing his best football right now, he really is,” Hendrickson said. “You look at his completion percentage, no turnovers, he takes care of the football, he’s the point guard of the offense, gets the ball where it needs to go … He was phenomenal today.”

Defensively the Coyotes gave up 445 yards, including 323 rushing but forced three turnovers – two fumbles and an interception.

Camryn Harrison had 106 yards on four carries and two touchdowns, including an 80-yard run in the third quarter, for Bethel. Quarterback Zach Esau was 3 of 6 for 122 yards and a touchdown, one a 75-yarder to Tanner Galliart in the second quarter.

“It was different than anything we faced all year,’ Singletary said of Bethel’s Flexbone attack. “It was a very complicated offense but playing as a team and everybody playing their assignments we came up with the ‘W.’”

“They’re an explosive offense,” Hendrickson said. “They make a lot of big plays. Our defense played great and put our offense in position to score as many points as we did.”

Hendrickson said he wasn’t surprised his team played well.

“Some people may say trap game but if you came out and watched us practice this week you wouldn’t be surprised by the outcome,” he said. “We were locked in and dialed in.

“We talk all the time ‘you get what you earn’ and I think we earned a home playoff game and we’re excited about that.”

The Coyotes notched the first two playoff victories in program history last year before losing to Benedictine in the semifinals – all three games on Bissell Field.

Hendrickson likes the way this year’s team’s playing heading into the postseason.

“This was the most complete game we’ve played,” he said. “This is one of the better teams we’ve played, score 60 points against a ranked team, take care of the football and get takeaways on defense – that’s our keys to win every week and that’s what we did.”

“I believe we’ll go far in the playoffs, it doesn’t matter who we go against,” Prewitt said. “We’re going to find a way to win.”

Johnny Feauto wasn’t about to let something like an injury to his throwing hand slow him down.

Feauto, Kansas Wesleyan’s standout senior quarterback, suffered the injury when he was tackled on the Coyotes’ second possession of the game. Trainers and doctors examined him on the sideline and gave him OK to return – the searing pain notwithstanding.

He responded by inflicting his own brand of pain on the Baker Wildcats’ defense.

Feauto threw for 327 yards and five touchdowns, and added another 62 yards rushing as No. 3 KWU rolled to a 42-7 victory in a first-round game of the NAIA Football Championship Series before a record crowd of 2,150 at Graves Family Sports Complex on Saturday afternoon.

Next up is a quarterfinal game against Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) at noon next Saturday at Graves Family Sports Complex. Lindsey Wilson defeated Saint Francis (Ind.) 30-26 Saturday and is 11-0 on the season. The Blue Raiders trailed 26-16 after three quarters before outscoring Saint Francis 14-0 in the final period.

Feauto, the NAIA’s total offense and passing leader, said it was a matter of ignoring the pain and playing through it.

“It was hard to throw but after a little bit it went numb,” he said. “I had to stick it out for these guys, I know every single one of them would do the same for me. I love this team and pain is temporary. I had to gut it out and that’s what I did.”

Down 7-0 in the first quarter Feauto, who was chosen the Offensive Player of the Game, led KWU on an 86-yard, 11-play drive that ended with a 13-yard touchdown pass to Richard McCauley – the first of three scoring passes to him.

Two possessions later KWU went 74 yards on six plays, Demarco Prewitt scoring from the 2 and giving KWU a 14-7 lead with 7:03 left in the half.

It took the offense just four plays to go 63 yards on the next possession, Feauto hitting Stevie Williams with a 23-yard touchdown pass, making it 21-7 with 3:59 before the break.

Feauto threw three more touchdown passes the second half, the first two on the two initial possessions of the third quarter – 31 yards to Williams and 5 yards to McCauley. Feauto capped the scoring with a 4-yard TD pass to McCauley on the third play of the fourth quarter.

He finished the day 17 of 27 passing and one interception. He carried the ball 11 times in gaining the 62 yards.

“He’s remarkable,” KWU Coach Myers Hendrickson said of Feauto. “He’s been dealing with a hand bruise and he’s just so tough that he played all the time. It doesn’t surprise me, that’s just his mindset and that’s his attitude. He’s the leader of our team.”

Feauto’s first pass of the day was intercepted by Bryson Briggs at the KWU 23-yard line. J.D. Woods ran for a touchdown on Baker’s first play, giving the Wildcats an early 7-0 lead just 4:48 into the game.

It also awakened two sleeping giants – the Coyotes’ offense and

defense and resulted a 42-0 blitz.

KWU had 547 total yards on 77 plays – an average of 7.1 yards per play. Trent Poe-Evans had five grabs for 122 yards and McCauley four for 34 yards and the three scores. Prewitt rushed for 107 yards on 22 carries before exiting midway through the third quarter with an injury.

“(Our receivers) were awesome,” Feauto said. “If I just put the ball up to those guys I know they’re going to go make a play. I’ve just got to get it around them and let them go it. And the O-line did a great job pass blocking, they played outstanding.”

“A messed up hand isn’t going to stop Johnny,” said Williams, who had another monstrous game with six catches for 165 yards and two touchdowns. “He’s the type player that will just keep going and keep aspiring to be greath, and I’m glad he did that today.”

Feauto also had high praise for the defense, which turned in its best performance of the season.

“Our defense played incredible, they played unbelievable,” he said. “If it wasn’t for that pick it would have been a shutout. All we had to do was score 14 points to win this game.”

Baker (9-3) was averaging 441 yards total offense, including 209 rushing, but had 275 total and just 37 rushing. Woods, who was averaging 128 yards rushing, had 28 on 11 carries and quarterback Marco Aguinaga was 22 of 39 for 238 yards and an interception.

“Our strategy was aggression,” said linebacker Charles Barnes III, who had six tackles, including 3.5 for loss and was selected the Defensive Player of the Game. “Every play aggression, be more aggressive than them and keep giving it to them every play.”

Linebacker Warren Singletary had a team-best eight tackles and the Coyotes had seven tackles for loss for a minus-28 yards. Takota Anderson also snagged his eighth interception of the season.

Hendrickson said the defense had never been better than it was Saturday.

“It was a shutout in my mind,” he said. “The one (touchdown) they got was on a short field, the defense was lights out. (Woods) was the best running back we’ve seen all year, the best offensive line we’ve seen all year, good football team and defensively we dominated.”

Feauto said the Coyotes tuned out the chatter during the week about facing another team from the highly-regarded Heart of America Athletic Conference. Baker was making its sixth consecutive playoff appearance and was the runner-up in 2016.

“We’re (the No. 3 seed) for a reason,” he said. “We believe in ourselves and we focus on that. If we believe that’s really all we care about.”

Johnny Feauto wasn’t ready or able to look at the big picture.

The pain of Kansas Wesleyan’s magical season and his magnifi cent

college career coming to an end abrupt end had to be processed fi rst

and foremost.

“It’ll be good to look back on it once it’s all said and done, but I’m

going to think about this for a little bit,” Feauto said following the No.

3 Coyotes 35-24 loss to No. 6 Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) in a quarterfi nal

game of the NAIA Football Championship Series on Saturday afternoon

at windswept Graves Family Sports Complex. “We could have won this

game and this isn’t where we wanted to be.”

KWU’s 25-2 record the last two seasons that includes a 20-0 record

in the Kansas Conference and 3-2 record in NAIA postseason play, is

unprecedented in program history. There’s also the extensive list of

team and individual, and school and conference records the Coyotes

shattered along the way.

Those numbers and their accomplishments will gradually move

forward in their collective conscience once the shock and agony of

Saturday’s loss subsides.

The end came against a Lindsey Wilson team that featured a potent

and balanced offensive attack, and a defense that relentlessly

pressured Feauto and blanketed his receivers.

Blue Raider quarterback Cameron Dukes shook off a fi rst quarter

knee injury that sidelined him briefl y and threw three touchdown

passes, ran for another and kept his team in the lead the entire game.

Running back Jaylen Boyd added 155 yards rushing and a touchdown

as Lindsey Wilson improved to 12-0.

“Their quarterback is an incredible player and he’s tough,” KWU

coach Myers Hendrickson said. “I think he was playing injured, he

got banged up then came back in the game. We saw that on fi lm and

knew that’s who we’re going against and that’s what he was today. He

was very, very good.”

Dukes had to be helped off the fi eld with 4:37 left in the fi rst quarter

and appeared to be done for the day, but returned in the second

quarter after missing one series and promptly threw two touchdown

passes – the second a pivotal 10-yarder to Terrill Cole Jr. with 8

seconds left in the half that gave Lindsey Wilson a 21-10 halftime

lead.

The play capped quick a 55-yard, nine-play drive that took just

1 minute, 11 seconds and came after the Coyotes had scored on

Demarco Prewitt’s 3-yard run with 1:20 left in the half.

“That was really too bad they got that quick one,” Hendrickson said.

“We scored right away to start the third quarter, I think it’s a different

game if they don’t have 21 at half. That was big for them. The defense

had played so good and to have 21 on the scoreboard at halftime was

kind of a tough deal.”

The Coyotes (12-1) got within four twice the second half, but Lindsey

Wilson answered with a touchdown each time.

Feauto, who had 66 yards passing the fi rst half, hit Richard McCauley

with a 4-yard touchdown pass with 10:29 left in the third quarter,

making it 21-17 but Boyd, a hard-charging junior, scored from 22

yards out on the Blue Raiders’ next possession.

KWU got within 28-24 on Prewitt’s 2-yard run with 3:31 left in the

quarter, but Dukes found Cole open in the end zone from 6 yards out

on the fi rst play of the fourth quarter, moving the lead back to 11

again (35-24).

After holding Lindsey Wilson on downs the Coyotes drove to the Blue

Raiders’ 12-yard line, but turned the ball over on downs at the 19 with

6:17 left in the game.

“It’s hard to say that we lost, I feel like we ran out of time,”

Hendrickson said. “If we could have kept going I believe in this

offense and this defense, we’d have found a way to do it.”

Feauto said his sore right hand, which he injured a month earlier,

wasn’t a factor. He completed 16 of 34 passes for 212 yards, one

touchdown and was sacked three times in the fi nal game of his

storied career. He departs having thrown for 7,362 yards and 90

touchdowns in just two seasons.

“They did a great job,” Feauto said of the Blue Raiders’ defense.

“Their D-line was fast, they got to me pretty well and did a good job in

coverage. You’ve got to tip your hat to that defense.”

Stevie Williams had four catches for 71 yards, Prewitt four for 55

yards and Trenton Poe-Evans three for 64 yards.

Prewitt ended his historic four-year career with 111 yards rushing

on 31 carries, two touchdowns and exits as the leading rusher in

program history with 4,701 yards and 84 total touchdowns – 77

rushing. Poe-Evans bows out with 169 receptions for 2,758 yards and

48 touchdowns in four years.

Lindsey Wilson had 435 total yards, 235 rushing and 200 passing,

while KWU compiled 360 yards, 212 passing and 148 rushing.

“We did get beat by a good team,” Hendrickson said. “We didn’t

turn the ball over once today. When you don’t turn the ball over and

somebody beats us, as good as we are, then hats off. They’re a good

team.”

Dukes, a junior, was 16 of 27 for 192 yards and was sacked twice by

Shaq Bradford in the fi nal game of his stellar career. He fi nished the

season with 21 sacks and had 43 during his two years at Wesleyan.

“They executed and did a good job with what they wanted to do,”

Bradford said. “They did a great job answering every time we’d get a

big play and try to get momentum on our side. A lot of credit to them

guys over there.”

Cole, a redshirt freshman, caught seven passes for 96 yards and two

touchdowns, Jay Gaudlock fi ve for 39 yards and redshirt freshman

Josh Lewis three for 58 yards.

“They have weapons all over,” Hendrickson said. “When you make it to

the fi nal eight in the country everybody’s going to be good. I thought it

was two outstanding teams playing.”

“I love this team, love these guys and we played to the end,” Feauto

said.
