In a major development, 2016 saw the announcement of the CPPC’s historic two-part gift to the Museum of Modern Art of nearly 150 artworks from the modern collection and the establishment of a center for research at MoMA, The Patricia Phelps de Cisneros Research Institute for the Study of Art from Latin America. This gift inaugurates the thoughtful dispersal of works from the CPPC’s holdings to various institutions where they will be cared for and integrated with established collections, taking their place in a global story of art history in a process that will continue to proceed with thoughtful consideration in the coming years. In the meantime, we continued to develop exhibitions in partnership with others. In 2016 the foundations continued to be laid for several shows that opened or will open: Vistas del Sur, a show of Latin American landscapes, at the New Britain Museum of Art; Power and Piety, an itinerant show whose 50-some objects from the Colonial collection will be traveling for approximately 3 years; Making Art Concrete, a collaboration with the Getty’s LA/LA initiative, to open in September 2017; and Overlook, curated by Teresita Fernández and co-curated by Sara Meadows of the CPPC to open in May 2017. Our programming has continued, with book events and presentations of Conversaciones books featuring Liliana Porter and the newly-published volume on Waltercio Caldas; salon-style events honoring Isabel Lewis and Ignacio Cardona; a Viewing Room organized with the Storefront for Art and Architecture on Leandro Katz’s Catherwood project; the fourth edition of Discuciones in Caracas as well as a Conexiones Emergentes that served 36 Venezuelan artists.

Due to the complexity of the political situation in Venezuela, we postponed (but did not cancel) the popular annual Seminario Fundación Cisneros. As is clear in the statistics for our social media, Venezuelans are at the forefront of our audience, and we continue with every effort to be engaged there. This was our third year of creating content to be disseminated on our website, and another benefit of our development of our social media muscles has been to drive traffic to the website form, primarily, Instagram and Facebook. We published thirty-two articles on the site in 2016, and our authors came from a wide spectrum of the world of art and culture in Latin America. As we continue in 2017, we look forward to seeing the fruition of our collaborations with other institutions and the continuing growth of our website and social media platforms.

En un importante acontecimiento, en el 2016 fuimos testigos del anuncio de la histórica donación de la CPPC al Museo de Arte Moderno de Nueva York (MoMA) en dos partes: cerca de 150 obras de arte de la colección de arte moderno, y el establecimiento de un centro de investigación en el MoMA, el Instituto de Investigación Patricia Phelps de Cisneros para el Estudio del Arte de América Latina. Esta donación da inicio a un importante periodo de dispersión de las obras de la CPPC en el que se incorporarán a diversas instituciones en las que serán atendidas e integradas a colecciones establecidas, ocupando su lugar en una narrativa global de la historia del arte. Este periodo continuará bajo un minucioso análisis durante los próximos años.

Mientras tanto, continuamos desarrollando exposiciones en colaboración con otras instituciones. En 2016 se sentaron las bases para exposiciones que fueron o serán inauguradas: Vistas del Sur, una muestra de paisajes latinoamericanos en el New Britain Museum of Art; Power and Piety, una exhibición itinerante en la que 50 objetos de la colección Colonial viajarán durante casi 3 años; Making Art Concrete, una colaboración con la iniciativa LA/LA del Getty, que se inaugurará en septiembre de 2017; y Overlook, bajo la curaduría de Teresita Fernández y co-curaduría de Sara Meadows de la CPPC a inaugurar en mayo del 2017.

Nuestra programación continuó con programas y presentaciones de los libros de Conversaciones con Liliana Porter y el volumen recién publicado sobre Waltercio Caldas; nuestros eventos tipo salón en honor a Isabel Lewis e Ignacio Cardona; un Viewing Room organizado junto con Storefront for Art and Architecture sobre

el proyecto Catherwood de Leandro Katz; la cuarta edición de Discuciones en Caracas y una sesión de Conexiones Emergentes a la que asistieron 36 artistas venezolanos.

Debido a la compleja situación política en Venezuela, pospusimos (pero no cancelamos) el popular Seminario Fundación Cisneros que ocurre anualmente. Como puede verse claramente en las estadísticas de nuestras redes sociales, los venezolanos constituyen una gran parte de nuestra audiencia, y continúan nuestros esfuerzos por involucrarnos con ellas.

Este fue nuestro tercer año en crear contenido para ser diseminado en nuestro sitio web, y otra consecuencia positiva de desarrollar nuestras redes sociales ha sido impulsar tráfico al sitio web, principalmente a través de Instagram y Facebook. Publicamos treinta y dos artículos en el sitio en 2016, y nuestros autores provienen de un amplio espectro del mundo del arte y la cultura en América Latina.

A medida que avancemos en el 2017, esperamos ver la fructificación de nuestras colaboraciones con otras instituciones así como el continuo crecimiento de nuestro sitio web y las plataformas de redes sociales.

ESPEl 2016 fue la primera vez en el que la CPPC utilizó campañas de redes sociales dirigidas durante todo el año, lo que incrementó audiencias e interacción entre las plataformas y se convirtió en la principal fuente de tráfico hacia la página web. Algunas campañas de instagram establecidas el año anterior (#OrinocoWednesday, #TravelerTuesday) se consolidaron. El post más popular del 2016 (imagen a la derecha) tuvo 407 interacciones. Tras el anuncio de la donación de arte moderno de la CPPC a MoMA, nuestras redes sociales recibieron un aumento significativo en interactividad.

ENG2016 was the first full year the CPPC used targeted social media campaigns which increased engagement across platforms and became the main source of traffic for the website. Instagram campaigns established in the previous year (e.g. #OrinocoWednesday, #TravelerTuesday) gained traction. The most popular post from 2016 (pictured at right) had 407 total engagements. Following the announcement of CPPC’s modern art gift to MoMA, our social media accounts received a significant increase in engagement.

The fifth Viewing Room exhibition featured Leandro Katz’s work The Catherwood Project (1985‒1993), which was presented alongside the 1844 book of lithographs Views of Ancient Monuments in Central America, Chiapas and Yucatan by Frederick Catherwood. The program Incidents of Travel accompanied the exhibition, with talks by Julia Herzberg, David Shapiro, and Eugenie Tsai.

La quinta iteración de Viewing Room presentó la obra The Catherwood Project (1985-1993) de Leandro Katz , que fue exhibido junto al libro de litografías Views of Ancient Monuments in Central America, Chiapas and Yucatan de Frederick Catherwood. Over fifty objects̶including paintings, sculptures, silver pieces, furniture and decorative devotional objects̶from the CPPC’s colonial art collection are featured in this itinerant exhibition, which will travel across the U.S. over a three-year period.

Más de cincuenta objetos -incluyendo pinturas, esculturas, piezas de plata, muebles y objetos devocionales decorativos- de la colección de arte colonial de la CPPC son parte de esta exposición itinerante, que viajará por Estados Unidos durante un período de tres años.

The CPPC expanded its Wikiarte programming reach this year by co-organizing two edit-a-thons in New York City and Caracas as well as supporting two other independent Wikiarte initiatives that took place in Mexico City and Buenos Aires.

El 17 de octubre del 2016, el Museo de Arte Moderno de Nueva York (MoMA) anunció una importante donación en dos partes de la Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros (CPPC). Conformado por casi 150 obras de arte moderno latinoamericano, así como el establecimiento de un centro de investigación en MoMA, esta donación contribuirá a profundizar el conocimiento sobre el importante papel que ha jugado América Latina en la historia del arte moderno y contemporáneo.
