Defeat DehydrationA tip from Community Center personal trainer, Carl Ray

Summer is a great time to be outdoors, but hot, dry conditions can be a hindrance to improving or maintaining your fitness. Adequate hydration is important for everyone and it is essential for regular exercisers to replace body fluids. Dehydration is more likely during and after prolonged exercise and can have serious consequences. At the least, dehydration may cause decreased performance, headaches, and fatigue. More serious consequences can include muscle cramping, fainting, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke.

Although hyponatremia (over-hydration) is a potential concern for competitive endurance athletes, dehydration is a far more common problem for most athletes and the general public, especially those unaccustomed to strenuous activity during summer months.

In order to get the most out of your workout and avoid dehydration, here are some common recommendations:

  •  Drink approximately 17 ounces, or about the size of one plastic water bottle, of water about two hours before exercise to promote adequate hydration and allow time for your body to process excess water.

  •  Hydrate at regular intervals during your workout by drinking at least 3 ounces every 20 minutes of exercise. This will help you consume fluids at a rate equal to water lost through perspiration. Keep in mind that during hot and humid conditions or prolonged and/or intense exercise, even more water is required.

  •  For exercise bouts lasting longer than 90 minutes, diluted juice and/or a sports drink will add beneficial electrolytes and help maintain your blood sugar balance.

  •  Take advantage of cooler temperatures in the early morning if your workout takes you outdoors.

  •  Weigh yourself before and after exercise. For every pound of weight lost, drink two cups of fluid.

Exercising safely is vital to maintaining your overall workout program. Be sure to incorporate proper hydration to help your fitness go further.

Cure Your SliceA tip from Andy Horn, golf pro at the Golf Center at Kings Island

Last time we talked about one of the two main reasons golfers slice the ball—coming over the top. If you’ve been practicing starting your downswing with your lower body, you are now ready to conquer the second reason for a slice.

This is the important part. You need to release your club face! You can only do this by turning your hands over through impact! I teach this every year to all my new students. First, you need to work the toe of the golf club on the backswing facing up. Next, work the toe over through the “hitting zone” and up! The club face “must” rotate through the shot!

If you watch golf on TV and they show the tour players swing in slow motion, you will see the club face really turn over through the hitting zone. Do some slow and short swings and feel this before you go out and you will see your slice slowly go away. Hit some 7 irons 50 to 60 yards and feel the club turn over and your lower body working first and watch the ball hook some. Do this with a full swing and have your body clear out and you will kiss that slice goodbye! Good luck and hit them all long and straight!

TENNIS

Tennis in the ParksHeritage Oak ParkTennis is a life-long sport that can be learned at any age. The City of Mason is pleased to offer lessons for ages 4 through adult. Junior tennis classes follow the “games” approach to learning tennis. Classes will be half traditional stroke work and half focused on rallying skills. To teach rallying, the class will use bigger balls, fewer court lines, and multiple ball bounces to help kids play “real tennis” before they acquire all the racquet skills needed to play sets. Both adult and junior players will learn ball striking skills, scoring, rallying skills, and basic strategy—all in a fun, stimulating environment.

Rainout and makeup classes will be scheduled as needed. There is no makeup for missed classes. In case of inclement weather conditions, please call the City of Mason hotline at 513.229.8502 and select option 5 to hear program cancellations or delays due to weather.

Running Tip: The 10-Percent RuleThis easy-to-follow method will help you increase your mileage in a safe manner.

Thinking about training for a marathon this fall? The 10% rule is one of the most important principles in running. It simply means that you should increase your weekly mileage by no more than 10% over the previous week.

The vast majority of running injuries are overuse injuries. They occur when you run too much or increase your weekly mileage too quickly. Say you've been running 4 miles three times a week, or 12 miles a week. You decide to pick up your training by adding two more 4-milers a week. Your training increases from 12 miles a week to 20 miles a week—a 67% increase.

Your body can’t handle such a large transition. The week of the race, you start hobbling, your legs start throbbing, and by Sunday morning you have an injury and are unable to race. For runners, the biggest enemy is often your own energy and enthusiasm. You're feeling great, so you figure that you can handle more training. But your body doesn't share in your enthusiasm. It follows one simple, unchanging principle: gradual adaptation to stress.

The gradual adaptation principle is one of the many examples of the body's genius. With it, there are almost no limits to what you can achieve. But you can't bend the rules or the system breaks, and instead of progressing forward, you’re stuck with an injury or illness.

Following the 10% rule allows your body to get stronger and more fit gradually. If you're running 10 miles a week now and you want to increase your training, run 11 miles next week. And 12 the week after that. And 13 the week after that. This may look like agonizingly slow progress, but in just 8 to 10 weeks you could be running 20 miles a week and be well on your way to completing that marathon.
