CP 4 —NACE Cathodic Protection Specialist

Description The CP 4-Cathodic Protection Specialist Course is an intensive 6-day course that focuses on

the principles and procedures for CP design on a variety of structures for both galvanic and im-

pressed current systems. The course discusses the theoretical concepts behind the design and

considerations that infl uence the design (environment, structure type/materials of construction,

coatings), design factors, and calculations (including attenuation). The course involves lecture

and in-class discussion and practice with design examples on various structures (i.e., pipelines,

tanks and well casings, offshore applications and steel reinforcing in concrete structures). The

course concludes with the written NACE Cathodic Protection Specialist Examination.

Who Should Attend This course is intended for those involved in the design, installation, and maintenance of CP

systems. Prior to taking the exam or the NACE training course, students must have complet-

ed college or university-level courses in algebra, geometry, and trigonometry, and must have

signifi cant amounts of practical experience in CP design. NOTE: The CP Specialist Examination

is challenging, and the CP 4—Cathodic Protection Specialist Course is designed as a refresher

course for persons already meeting the experience and education prerequisites for the exam.

There is not a direct progression from Cathodic Protection Technologist to Cathodic Protec-

tion Specialist. Participating only in the CP 4–Cathodic Protection Specialist Course does not

ensure success on the Cathodic Protection Specialist Examination. Substantial experience

involving all aspects of cathodic protection, including design and formal education in math/sci-

ence/engineering is critical to students’ success in the course and examination. Attendance at

the CP 3-Cathodic Protection Technologist Course is strongly recommended before sitting

for the CP 4-Cathodic Protection Specialist Course or Examination Only Option.

NACE understands that the needs of industry are constantly changing.

To help meet these needs, NACE is currently developing the following courses.

CP InterferenceThis is NACE’s fi rst course dedicated solely to the subject of stray current and

CP interference. The course will include in depth coverage of detection, effects,

monitoring and mitigation of DC interference, AC interference and telluric current

interference. Theory, infl uencing factors, deleterious effects, testing, prediction and

analysis, mitigation and, monitoring strategies (survey and monitoring techniques) will

be discussed for each type of interference. The course will be presented in a format

of lecture, hands-on in-class experiments, and group case studies. It is recommended

that students complete at least the CP 2–Cathodic Protection Technician course

prior to attending the CP Interference course.

Marine CP 2-Cathodic Protection Technician A Marine edition of the CP 2-Cathodic Protection Technician Course will soon be

available. Consistent with the existing CP 2 course, the Marine edition will be an

intensive 6-day course that presents CP technology and its application to marine

environments. The course will address CP related to ships and submarines, shore

facilities (docks, piers, etc), offshore structures (oil and gas production platforms),

underwater pipelines and, commercial shipping. The course will be presented in a

format of lecture and hands-on training with equipment and instruments used in

marine CP testing and will conclude with a fi nal examination. Individuals successfully

completing the examination and who have an approved certifi cation application will

receive certifi cation as a Marine Cathodic Protection Technician.

Coatings in Conjunction with Cathodic ProtectionThis course will emphasize the relationship between protective coatings and cathodic

protection on a pipeline system and how these two methods of corrosion control

interact. The course will also provide students with the knowledge and skills to imple-

ment and monitor a corrosion control program that utilizes both methods.
