wHAT IS THE MBTI® ASSESSMENT?In developing the Myers-Briggs® assessment, Isabel Briggs Myers and her mother, Katharine Briggs, aimed to make Carl Jung’s theory of psychological type understandable and useful in people’s everyday lives. The essence of the theory is that much seemingly random variation in behavior is actually quite orderly and consistent, being due to basic differences in the ways individuals are oriented toward the external world, take in information, and draw conclusions about what they perceive.

The MBTI assessment helps people identify their preferences on four dichotomies:

• Extraversion or Introversion (focusing attention and getting energy)

• Sensing or Intuition (taking in information) •Thinking or Feeling (making decisions) •Judging or Perceiving (dealing with the external world)

The various combinations of those four preferences result in 16 distinct personality types—all of which bring an equally valuable perspective and equally important contributions to human interactions. But a

type is more than just the sum of four preferences. People’s four-letter MBTI type code is a simple way of signifying the interaction of their preferences. Learning about this interaction, known as type dynamics, is an important part of understanding and making the best use of MBTI results.

wHY IS IT SO POPULAR?The MBTI tool’s positive approach to understanding differences between people has made it the world’s most popular personality assessment. It’s deceptively simple but is based on sound and enduring psychological theory that can transform the performance of individ-uals, groups, and entire organizations.

Individuals who take the MBTI assessment often experience “aha!” moments as they come to better understand themselves and how they approach work and day-to-day life. Organizations make it the personality assessment of choice across their training and development programs because it provides a common language for appreciating interpersonal differences.

Over the past 70 years, the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator ® (MBTI®) personality inventory has helped millions of individuals throughout the world gain insights about themselves and how they interact with others. The MBTI assessment enables personal transformation by giving people a powerful tool for improving how they communicate, learn, and work.

KEY BENEFITSThe MBTI assessment is

• Easy to grasp, insightful, and thought provoking— for practitioners and clients alike

• Highly reliable and valid, backed by ongoing global research and development investment

• Highly flexible in terms of administration options and application areas

• Available in 20+ languages—with new translations constantly in development and with culturally appropriate norms for each country where a translation is available

wHAT ISSUES CAN IT HELP ADDRESS?The MBTI instrument’s wide-ranging applications promote growth and development in many organiza-tional settings, including business, counseling, and education. The tool is particularly useful for

• Team development—helping to ease communication among team members, identify team strengths and weaknesses, and create action plans for improved performance

• Leadership development—understanding leaders’ personality type and the type of those they are leading to help them manage better, lead more effectively, give more meaningful feedback, inspire and influence effectively, and improve individual and team performance

• Interpersonal skills development—promoting individual self-awareness and increasing effectiveness across myriad applications

• Conflict management—improving skills in identifying sources of conflict and intervening early to prevent underperformance, disruption, and disengagement

• Executive and line manager coaching—helping individuals stretch to accomplish ambitious personal and organizational goals and retaining top talent

• Stress management—building resilience, increasing organizational focus and productivity, and offering strategies and action steps for identifying stress-related triggers

• Career transition and planning—advising individuals on career choice, development, and the impact of organizational change to ensure that top talent is retained in alternative roles rather than lost to other organizations

Many companies, big and small, have used the MBTI instrument to achieve results. Some of the more high-profile examples include JetBlue, Sony, Kaiser Permanente, Southwest Airlines, Ernst & Young, Hallmark, and Health New England. You can access case studies from these and other companies at www.cpp.com > Knowledge Center > Case Studies.

ASSESSMENT OPTIONSCPP offers two forms of the MBTI assessment— the Form M (Step I™) assessment and the Form Q (Step II™) assessment:

• MBTI Form M (Step I)—includes 93 items and identifies individuals’ personality type (made up of four basic preferences, generating a four-letter type code) and provides a common language around how they interact with the world and each other

• MBTI Form Q (Step II)—includes 144 items (the 93 items in Form M, plus 51 other items) to drill down to a finer level of detail to explore personal variation within each type; it provides individuals’ four-letter MBTI type code plus results on 20 facets of that type (five for each preference) and is the second step in personal and professional development using the MBTI assessment

An additional option is MBTI®Complete, which combines the MBTI Step I assessment with a basic interpretation developed by type expert Allen Hammer, PhD. Endorsed by the Myers and Briggs Foundation, this one-stop online offering boosts training effectiveness by automating participants’ introduction to personality type.

We are using the MBTI assessment not simply because it is interesting but primarily because it produces tangible results.“ ”Peter Straley, President & CEO, Health New England

USING THE TKIThe TKI tool assesses an individual’s behavior in conflict situations and describes it along two dimensions: assertiveness and cooperativeness. The tool provides detailed information about how that individual can use the five different modes, or styles—competing, collaborating, compromising, avoiding, and accommodating—effectively. The TKI model demonstrates that these different behaviors are neither good nor bad but simply different ways of dealing with conflict. This research-backed assessment offers a practical way to initiate safe and calm yet purposeful dialogue to resolve or manage conflict.

wHY IS IT SO POPULAR?The TKI assessment reveals how differing conflict-handling styles affect personal and group dynamics and gives your clients the power to choose the appropriate style for any situation. The best-selling TKI tool, withstanding the test of time, has proven to be versatile and easy to use, and, with its control for social desirability, its reliability and validity are rock solid. The TKI tool is well-respected because of the opportunities it provides for accepting differing

viewpoints, enhancing communication, and improving productivity, team building, and retention.

•Helps trainers, managers, and other professionals open one-on-one or group discussions around conflict

•Requires no special training to administer or interpret

•Reflects today’s gender, racial, ethnic, age, and job-level diversity in the workplace, based on an updated normative sample

•Comprises just 30 items, so it’s quick (takes just 15 minutes) and easy to understand and administer

The Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument (TKI) is the world’s best- selling assessment for understanding how different conflict-handling styles affect interpersonal and group dynamics—and for giving individuals the power to choose the appropriate style for any situation. USING THE FIRO® ASSESSMENTSThe FIRO assessments are widely used tools for helping people understand their behavior, and the behavior of others, in interpersonal situations. They address the core of personality—people’s underlying needs—and precisely identify sources of tension in relationships. In addition, they provide a clarity of perception that improves personal effectiveness. CPP offers two assessments from the FIRO line:

• FIRO-B®. The FIRO-B instrument measures interpersonal needs on three scales—Inclusion, Control, and Affection—and provides streamlined administration, using only 54 items.

• FIRO Business®. The newest version in the FIRO line, offering the same benefits and types of results as the FIRO-B assessment, uses scale names featuring more business-focused language— Involvement, Influence, and Connection, respectively. It has only 30 items for even shorter administration time and is ideal for global use, with scoring based on sample norms in 10 languages.

wHY ARE THEY SO POPULAR?The FIRO-B and FIRO Business assessments provide unique insights that move beyond personality to focus

specifically on interpersonal needs—which have a profound impact on everything related to working with other people, from teamwork to leadership, working relationships to customer service. • Support leadership development, one-on-one coaching, communication, and team performance

• Work as stand-alone tools or can be combined with other tools, such as the MBTI instrument, to provide a comprehensive view of personality, interpersonal needs, and behavior

USING THE CPI™ ASSESSMENTSThe CPI assessments are trusted and powerful tools for use in leadership development and selection, providing insight into individuals’ strengths and developmental opportunities. By describing individuals as others see them, and through the generation of highly intuitive reports, they can help your clients gain a clearer picture of their personal and work-related characteristics, motivations, and thinking styles—as well as how they manage themselves and deal with others.

The CPI 260 ® assessment was introduced in 2002 in response to requests for a shorter version of the CPI instrument. It contains 260 items carefully selected from the full 434-item assessment, and the results of the two assessments are highly correlated. Responses are measured on scales covering dealing with others, self-management, motivations and thinking style, personal characteristics, and work-related characteristics. The CPI 260 form

• Offers practical, down-to-earth insights for OD, coaching, and human resource professionals in a business or organizational context

• Is designed for easy administration that respects the time constraints of both clients and practitioners

• Is more business focused and generates leadership development reports that can function as develop-mental plans and coaching aids

The CPI ™ 434 assessment, introduced in 1995, is not designed to be used as a coaching tool with clients, but rather for professionals who are qualified to use complex assessment tools and have a solid background in personality theory and assessment methodology, as well as experience in the analysis of individual test data. The CPI 434 form contains 434 items measured on scales covering social expertise and interpersonal style, maturity, achievement orientation, creative temperament, managerial potential, tough-mindedness, and more.

wHY ARE THEY SO POPULAR?Built on the exceptional history, validity, and reliability of the CPI instrument, both versions of the assessment can provide your clients with time-tested answers to their most pressing challenges. They each compare clients’ answers to those of a normative sample of 6,000 individuals. Organizations can use either assessment to help them find and develop successful employees and leaders and to cultivate a rich pool of talent for building organizational success.

For more than 55 years, the California Psychological Inventory™ (CPI™) instrument has provided a highly accurate and in-depth portrait not only of individuals’ professional and personal styles, but also of their potential. CPP offers two forms of the instrument—the CPI 260® and the CPI™ 434 assessments—each geared toward a different professional usage.
