The CPR Diamond Model for Socio-economic and Political Development: Explained

• The CPR Diamond Model is a national development model being promoted by the Club of Professional Researchers, a voluntary research organization of young professionals and leaders with memberships in the government (G), private sector (PS) and civil society organization (CS).

• It is based on the idea that it is the responsibility of every Filipino, particularly our leaders (G, PS, CS) at the local and national levels to collectively solve the problems and needs of Philippine society.

Page 8: CPR Diamond Model Concepts & Applications

The CPR Diamond Model for Socio-economic and Political Development (cont)

• The CPR Diamond Model emphasizes that mankind (human-beings) is both a means and an end of development. Using the different levels of learning approach with emphasis on the interdisciplinary/transdisciplinary approach to learning/research.

• These two approaches to learning should be the ideal way of encouraging the application of knowledge for every Filipino to create their individual contribution towards the attainment of socio-economic and political development in the country, at the national and local levels, using the different attributes/characteristics and core values of development.

Page 9: CPR Diamond Model Concepts & Applications

The CPR Diamond Model for Socio-economic and Political Development (cont)

• The CPR Diamond Model adheres to the principles that knowledge, wisdom, power and authority are all God’s stewardship to man by God. Unless man acknowledges this stewardship from Him and, recognizes that God is all-knowing, all-powerful and all-present in his/her (individual) life, his/her perspiration, inspiration and will power are all in vain and will not give the optimum impact to the society, where he/she is supposed to contribute, and chart his/her own legacy and history.

• The model has a target timeframe of 30 years for dissemination and encouraging for its application and utilization for its fruits to be seen in the Philippine society and in any other places (country) and other concerns of development where the Model could be applied .

Page 10: CPR Diamond Model Concepts & Applications

What interdisciplinary approach to learning?

• Interdisciplinary approach to research/learning is concerned to the transfer of methods from one discipline to another. Interdisciplinarity can be classified into three: degree of application, epistemology degree, and degree of generation of new disciplines. CPR Diamond Model of Development focuses on the degree of application of knowledge into real life situation.

Page 11: CPR Diamond Model Concepts & Applications

What is interdisciplinary learning? (cont)

• Like multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary learning overflows the disciplines, but its goal still remains within the framework of disciplinary research. It connects the interdisciplinary knowledge and skills from more than one subject area to examine a central theme, issue, problem, topic, or experience. It is a holistic experience that stresses linkages (e.g. using sustainable development as a theme, students pursue learning outcomes from science, social studies, and language arts to better understand a complex issue).

Page 12: CPR Diamond Model Concepts & Applications

Comparison of Disciplinary, Multidisciplinary, Interdisciplinary and Transdisciplinary Approach to Learning – Dr. Josefina Tayag – Current

UP Manila Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs

• Disciplinary approach explains one field from the framework of one discipline; e.g. economics, political science, business management, etc.

• On the other hand, the multidisciplinary approach brings to fore the various disciplines working independently on a broadly defined problem, for instance, poverty in the Philippines, a disease like rabies, Avian Influenza, etc.

• The interdisciplinary approach, on the other hand, also brings in the different disciplines and insights to a problem but blurs the boundaries between different disciplines.

• Transdisciplinary approach, according to Rosenfield, seeks the creation of a common conceptual framework to address a particular problem with blending of commonly accepted concepts and theories (Rosenfield, 1992).

Page 13: CPR Diamond Model Concepts & Applications

What is transdisciplinary approach to learning?

• Transdisciplinary approach to research/learning, on the other hand, is concerned with the universal sharing of knowledge between and across the different disciplines, and beyond all disciplines. Its goal is the understanding of the present world, of which one of the imperatives is the unity of the knowledge.

• Mutual learning is the basic principle of transdisciplinary approach (Ronald Scholz of Swiss Federal Institute of Technology).

Page 14: CPR Diamond Model Concepts & Applications

What is transdisciplinary learning?

• Transdisciplinary learning aspires to make the change from research for society to research with society. It is a (new) type of scientific activity that produces, integrates, and manages knowledge. It supplements traditional, disciplinary, multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary scientific activities by incorporating the processes, methodologies, knowledge, and goals of interested parties from science, industry, and politics into one another.

God’s Stewardship to Man from Him

• Based on the framework (Figure 1), it is important to note that knowledge, wisdom, power and authority are God’s stewardship to man from God.

• Stewardship means the proper management of your life and possessions. We are responsible as God’s stewards to properly manage the things He has given us.

Page 17: CPR Diamond Model Concepts & Applications

We need to acknowledge the hand of God in our lives.

We need to acknowledge God as the sources of knowledge, skills, power and authority for us to

effectively govern our country. We need good leaders. We need new leaders

who will take the baton from the old leadership. We need leaders who have the strong foundation in

interdisciplinary /transdisciplinary learning to make the difference and create positive change in the

Philippine society. We need to develop true Filipino leaders who knew

how to sacrifice and contribute. Our country needs each one of us!

Page 18: CPR Diamond Model Concepts & Applications

But what is development for the Philippines?

• According to development economist Michael Todaro (Economic Development in the Third World, 1989), development must be conceived as a multidimensional process involving major changes in social structures, popular attitudes, and national institutions, as well as the acceleration of economic growth, the reduction of inequality, and the eradication of absolute poverty.

Page 19: CPR Diamond Model Concepts & Applications

What are the three core values of development

• Life-sustenance. The ability to provide basic needs such as food, shelter, health and protection.

• Self-esteem. It is a sense of worth and self-respect, of not being used as tool by others for their own ends.

• Freedom from Servitude: It is not to be understood in the political or ideological sense, but as a fundamental sense, the freedom from alienating material conditions of life and from social servitude, to ignorance, to misery, to institutions and dogmatic beliefs. It involves expanded range of human choices.

Page 20: CPR Diamond Model Concepts & Applications

• Economic development is the development of economic wealth of countries or regions for the well-being of their inhabitants.

• Social development is the social change which characterize the change in social structure, the social institutions, the social behavior or the social relations of a society, community of people, and so on.

• Social change could be any event or action that affects a group of individuals that have shared values or characteristics.

• Social change could also be an acts of advocacy for the cause of changing society in a normative way (subjective).

Page 21: CPR Diamond Model Concepts & Applications

Changes in less-tangible factors are also considered, such as personal dignity, freedom of association, personal safety and freedom from fear of physical harm, and the extent of participation in civil society. Causes of socio-economic impacts are, for example, new technologies, changes in laws, changes in the physical environment and ecological changes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socioeconomic_development)

Page 22: CPR Diamond Model Concepts & Applications

• Promotion of people’s self-esteem (identity, dignity, respect, honor and recognition).

• Give the people the freedom from external influence and dominance, and freedom of choice. These include: freedom to trade, freedom to utilize appropriate technology, freedom to be educated, freedom to make his/her own lifestyle; freedom to receive and give public/private aid; a choice to have material gain; a choice for leisure; a choice for beauty; and a choice for contemplation.

Page 24: CPR Diamond Model Concepts & Applications

Page 25: CPR Diamond Model Concepts & Applications

What are the attributes/characteristics of Effective Governance?

• Accountability • Proactiveness • Transparency • Participation • Convergence • Responsiveness • Political will • Commitment to reduce corruption• Priority to excellence in servicing others

Page 26: CPR Diamond Model Concepts & Applications

The Applications of CPR Diamond Model for

National Development

Page 28: CPR Diamond Model Concepts & Applications

The Applications of CPR Diamond Model • It can be used as a personal roadmap for better human

development. • It can be used as a guide to advance and uplift the

socio-economic and political development in the country (Philippines).

• It is an example on how interdisciplinary/transdisciplinary learning/research could be used as a tool for the national development of the Philippines.

• It has practical application in all fields of study, depending on your expertise or specialization.

• It is a model that acknowledges the omnipotent, omnipresence and omniscience of God in advancing the national development of the Philippines and, lastly.

• It can be your guide to a better quality of life and in achieving your dreams and vision, as a person created in the image of God. Mabuhay ka at ang Pilipinas!

Page 29: CPR Diamond Model Concepts & Applications

Conclusion

• Interdisciplinary/transdisciplinary learning approach could be used as a tool to encourage the application of knowledge from the different fields of specializations (economics, education, business management, statistics, political science, etc.) from the perspective of national development.

Page 30: CPR Diamond Model Concepts & Applications

Conclusion (cont)• The usefulness of the CPR Diamond Model for Socio-economic and

Political Development is dependent on how an individual adheres to the principles and inherent values attached to the development model.

• Under the interdisciplinary/transdisciplinary approach to learning, this conceptual framework is a tool in attacking the national and local development concerns of the Philippines. It brings in the different disciplines and insights to a problem, but blurs the boundaries between different disciplines. It also seeks the application of a common conceptual framework (CPR Diamond Model) to address the different problems and needs of socio-economic and political development in the country, with the blending of commonly accepted concepts and theories from different fields of specializations. These fields of specializations include development and business economics, education, psychology, health social science, sociology, statistics, political science, public administration, business management, agriculture science, to name some.
