Hugh Mungus, the life-size articulated model of 750,000 year old Mammoth walked again in his ancestors foot-prints on West Runton beach on Sunday 30th August.Hundreds of children and adults looked onwide-eyed as Suzie Lay (on right) who cameup with the idea, put Hugh together with herfriends like a giant 3D jigsaw, and then climbed into their harnesses, walking Hugh Mungus across the beach three times during the afternoon.

Dear Editor,I wonder if there is one of your kind readers who could help me.My husband lost his signature ring on the beachjust outside Mundesley and I wondered if any-one has a metal detector that we could borrow or hire to scan the area.As we think it was lost in an area where the seadoes not reach we feel we have a good chanceof finding it.Thank you Gill Williams.Telephone: 07837 562 305

I have an idea lets not burn effigies of Guy Faulks in November lets move with the times and burn effigies of BT.I have spent over six hours on the phone to various people in Indiaworking for BT with insufficient training to help me with all those frustrating torments of temperam-ental broadband email services supplied by BT and I am sure I am not alone.Training is one thing good manners & correct business practise another, just here a local business booked anadvertisement in our magazine, no copy arrived but the copy date did therefore we presumed we were to use the same as before (never presume or assume it makes an ass out of you and me) is a great saying and so true. We wrong in our assumption, we apologised & offered a free ad in the next issue which was accepted. Now many weeks later weve had no payment and when we politely reminded them about it we were

told that they dont think that they should pay any-thing for either ad! The amount was only about the price of a good bottle of wine!

Local churches have to find funds for the upkeep these expensive buildings and some have come up with great ideas. Here at Saint Michaels Church, inSidestrand there is an Exhibition by Sidestrand Archive Group on the 19th & 20th September.See Pages 22 & 23 for full details of this and many other events in September & October

As you will see your form has now been filed away until the end of this season (2015-2016). I would like to thank you once again for yourfantastic support. May I also thank Bullens Joinery and Carter Concrete of Cromer for sponsoring this competition over the last 8 years. Prize Money for this year totals 625 with the amount raised for EAAA being 625 plus donations of 70. Dear Editor, Lisa & Andy May, owners of The Sheringham Trawler Fish and Chip Restaurants have agreedto sponsor Englands Home Nations Championshipwinning Ladies Sea Angling Team for 2016, ahead of next years Championships that are to be staged along the North Norfolk coast.

After their gold medal win at this years event, held in Ireland in July, the team are already preparing to defend their title next year. This years venues were Cheekpoint & Ballyhack, fishing on the Barrow estuary. Two 4 hr. long matches, saw catches of mostly eels & flounders.Fishing is based on a catch & release system so that all fish are returned to the sea alive.

The Home Championships is a 2-day contestbetween England, Scotland, Wales & Ireland. Andy and Lisa May owners of The Sheringham Trawler said:With next years event being stagedin Nth Norfolk & two of the team living in Holtit seemed the natural thing for us to do.We are both proud to be sponsoring the Ladies Team, as a Fish & Chip Shop we have a natural connection to the sea so when we heard of this opportunity we said yes straight away Team Manager Kay Brown & her sister WendyMetcalfe are both delighted with the sponsorshipfrom The Sheringham Trawler Kay said: We normally cover all expenses ourselves and this can be very costly. The team is selected fromall over England & this will help towards theirtravelling expenses and accommodation. This means that the ladies can concentrate on preparing for the matches & defending our title. We would like to thank Andy and Lisa for their support it means a great deal to us and we will do our best to bring home the medals in 2016 and if we do we will certainly be celebrating with Fish & Chips at the Sheringham Trawler.Bruce Stratton

Dear Editor,This year I have put my name down on the waiting list for a beach hut at Mundesley, and was advised it may take approx 5 years to be offered a hut.On many frequent walks on the beach at varioustimes, I have noticed a maximum of five huts open and occupied, that being a warm and sunny Bank holiday Saturday afternoon.

It seems a shame that they are not used more.Michael Parke

Ten years ago, Aylsham Food Festival had just one event, the Big Slow Breakfast. It has now grown to go be spread over four days which this year spills over into a fifth. It has seen several other similar Norfolk events emerge during those years but it continues to standby its essentially non-commercial principles of promoting local food & providing an enjoyable experience for the local community & beyond. You can keep up to date with Aylsham Food Festival at www.slowfoodaylsham.org.uk via Facebook & Twitter: @aylshamfoodfestRoger WillisChairman, Slow Food Aylsham

Dear Liz,Following the awful storms of last years Winter and the devastation it caused in Cromer and alongthe various promenades the major task faced by the County and other Councils to restore damageto the Pier, to various buildings and the barriers along the sea wall ready for the influx of visitors this Summer was an onerous task.It has to be said that, in general, a very good jobhas been done and it is still ongoing with large concrete blocks being put in place to add to the sea defences. However along the promenade between the boatramp and the beach huts at Overstrand there are at least 3 sections of the old discarded barrier, one of them particularly large, lying on the beach below.Apart from detracting from the excellence of theclean up along Cromers beach these extremelylarge lumps of rusting debris, which people still working in the area dont notice or choose toignore, are extremely dangerous to the young children who in their excitement clamber aboutall over the place and could so easily seriously injure themselves on these chunks of rustingsteel left behind by the contractors.I am sure that if, heaven forbid, there was suchan accident and a child, or older person for thatmatter, was badly injured they would be seekingserious monetary compensation from the Council responsible but financial compensation never makes up for the spoilt holiday and the distress and trauma that can been caused by someone elses thoughtlessness. It is my intention to send a copy of this letter tothe NNDC, and the County Council if necessary, in the hope that they will instruct somebody ontheir staff to make a point of patrolling the beachin this area and arrange removal of these offensive and dangerous steel lumps.Once again, love your magazine for the interesting articles and comments from your many readers. All the best, keep up the good work and many thanks.Michael Webb Sidestrand

Friday 9th October 7.30pm: Cromer Community Hall The Friends of Cromer Museum welcomes the medieval specialist Dr John Alban to talk about Agincourt at their October meeting.

Six hundred years ago this month a small Englisharmy faced the French in a field near the settlement of Agincourt. There number were stacked heavilyagainst the English army. Amongst the Englishknights was Norfolk man Sir Thomas Erpingham.John Alban is the retired head of the Norfolk Record Office and his talk offers a fascinating background to the event and the story of the battle itself. We probably all recall Shakespeares stirring words when picturing the battle, and know of the deedsof the archers whose skills gave the English suchadvantage over the heavily-armoured French knights but what are the truths lying behind these stories, and what led up to such a climactic confrontation.John Alban will draw on at least 7 cotemporary accounts of the battle. His ability to read andinterpret the medieval English & French firsthand gives us a unique opportunity to understand the events. These talks arranged by the Friends of Cromer Museum are open for all to attend, 3.00 for non-members and 2.50 for members of the Friends. You can join at the meeting!Picture Above: An early fifteenth century miniature picturing the battle of Agincourt.

Lemon Curd & Real AleThey are so kind in Norfolk,Where we have our caravan,I chat on Sheringham market,

With Kim, selling pickles and jam.She makes lemon curd , which I cant eat,

Cows milk is no good for me,She found I am ok with goats milk,

Made some specially for my tea.The first batch was great, I reordered,

Pick up on the way, Carol too,Then guess what, poor Kim got the shingles,

Now what were they to do?Undaunted, Mary Ann, friend in the business,

Made lemon curd, left it for me,First thing, with Danny on Real Ale,

I dont drink, but we laughed, you see.

Aldborough ShopThe village of Aldborough has a population of over 600 people, many of them elderly, who are unable to reach other shops & services because they have no car. Aldborough has seen the closure of a butchers shop & one of its pubs. It still has a Post Office and a doctors surgery as well as a school. But the Spar shop in Aldborough is closing on 26th September this year leaving the village, designated a service village in NNDCs structure plan, without a shop. Peter Davison, 66, with the help of his daughter-in-law Margaret Adams, 42, is stepping into thebreach by making interim alterations to the PostOffice to offer a basic service from 29th Sept.He said: I would hate to see the village withouta shop. Many residents depend upon it for their basic needs. I was looking forward to retiring but I do feel that something should be done.I will start off providing simple needs such as bread, milk, eggs, tea, coffee and newspapers. I hope we can source much of our food locally, so we will be a local shop in every sense of the word. I will be talking to some local farmers to see whether we can take their meat, local bakers & other food suppliers. We will try to keep convenient hours from 8.30am - 6pm.Mr Davisons family have lived & traded in the village for the last 100 years. His grandfather was a cobbler and bootmaker in 1914 and the family has had the Post Office for 53 years. Peter Davison has been postmaster since 1994 and is now assisted by his daughter-in-law Margaret. Other members of his family and grandchildren live in the village and attend Aldborough school.Futher info from Peter Davison: 01263 768 198(Post Office hours) or Margaret Adams: Post Office as above or 01263 768 765

A Young Family... ....moved into a house next door to an empty plot. One day, a gang of building workers turned up to start building on the plot. The young familys 5-yr-old daughter naturally took an interest in all the activity going on next door and started talking with the workers. She hung around and eventually the builders, allwith hearts of gold, more or less adopted the littlegirl as a sort of project mascot. They chatted withher, let her sit with them while they had tea and lunch breaks, and gave her little jobs to do here and there to make her feel important. They even gave the child her very own hard hat and gloves, which thrilled her immensely. At the end of the first week, the smiling builders presented her with a pay envelope - containing 2 in 10p coins. The little girl took her pay home to her mother who suggested that they take the money to the bank the next day to open a savings account.

At the bank, the female cashier was tickled pinklistening to the little girl telling her about her work on the building site and the fact she had a pay packet. You must have worked very hard to earn all this, said the cashier. The little girl proudly replied: Yes, I worked every day with Steve & Wayne & Mike. Were building a big house. My goodness gracious, and will you be workingon the house again next week? said the cashierThe child thought for a moment. Then she said seriously:

I think so. Provided those w***kers at Jewsons deliver the f***ing bricks on time.

Thinking Wisp is a small company who are interested in providing internet broadband in rural communities.

Steve Nunn, above, in front of his display, he is holding the only item a person needs to purchase to make the system work (thats what he said anyway). There were many prospective customers even though his site on the day was hidden away andtook some finding. He gave us many technical details, all of which can be found in the site below: communityactionorfolk.org.uk In a technical talk, he stated that the only place that couldnt get an internet signal was if you had a giant oak outside your kitchen window. We have a giant oak outside of our kitchen window, but we enjoyed talking to him.

The roar of a tree-carving saw filled the air as wewatched huge chunks of wood being carved miraculously into wondrous owls and suchlike, displays that took away the breath.

All in all an excellent way to spend a Sunday morning even if we did have to record the Archers!

Thanks to Dennis & Sal Snape for this article and photographs.

The ladies are: on the blue weave, Jenny Rose; on the spinning wheel, Sharon Fisher and on the pegs Lesley Rose. Also outstanding was the colourful material woven by the Worstead ladies, standing next to the samples made the team feel that theyd fallen into a rainbow.

Coffee & tea were readily available at the manyseating areas, taken advantage of by old legs. A most interesting person to speak to was SteveNunn who was promoting the Thinking Wisp company, who are expert at supplying wireless internet broadband for rural ares.

Green Build 2015A cold dry Sunday morning, dry being the appropriate word in light of all the rain weve had recently, found the team at the Greenbuild day at Felbrigg Hall. We arrived to a fast-filling car park with somenumbers of people already walking the site thoughwe arrived at the exact time of opening.

Jane Wisson, above, who welcomed us in, is a fan of the Crab Tales and manages the Tourist Information Centre in Cromer. As you can see shed had her face painted by a lady on the site. The morning was a complete joy as always, withmany tents displaying local food and local crafts, from tree carving to weaving by the ladies of theWorstead Weavers, a charity with premises inDilham, which has about 40 members but welcomes other interested parties.

What Can Or Should Be Done?On Friday September 11th at 7.30pm, I went along to a meeting in Mundesley Church Rooms to discuss what can be done to re-instate the Trafalgar Slope access pathway.Back to December 2013 due to storms the slopewhich had been used for many years to access the beach, was seriously damaged and closed off by the North Norfolk District Council.

After a number of local meetings in Mundesley the NNDC claimed that they are not to be held responsible to meeting the cost for making the repairs, which are estimated to be something like 240 to 250k.

Book ChoiceThe Guernsey Literary & Potato Peel Pie Society By Mary Ann Shaffer & Annie BarrowsMary Ann Shaffers first and only novel opens in London in 1946, and could scarcely, it seems,be more English. Yet its author was an American, a bibliophile from West Virginia. She is at home with the idiom of her characters and the epistolary form of her novel and it is sadto think that this is her sole published work. Encouraged to write by members of her book club so, in her late sixties, took the plunge.Having visited Guernsey in 1976, Shaffer becamefascinated by the wartime occupation of the Channel Islands, and during the course of her research - woven unobtrusively into the the book - she heard tales of terrible cruelty and great courage. The StoryJanuary 1946: London is emerging from the shadow of the 2nd World War, & writer Juliet Ashton is looking for her next book subject. Who could imagine that she would find it in a letter from a man shes never met, a native of Guernsey, who has come across her name written inside a book by Charles Lamb.As Juliet and her new correspondent exchange letters, Juliet is drawn into the world of this man& his friends - and what a wonderfully eccentricworld it is. The Guernsey Literary & Potato PeelPie Society - born as a spur-of-the-moment alibiwhen its members were discovered breaking the curfew by the Germans occupying their island- boasts a charming, funny, deeply human cast of characters, from pig farmers to phrenologists, literature lovers all.Juliet begins a remarkable correspondence with

the societys members, learning about their island, their taste in books, and the impact the German occupation has had on their lives. Captivated bytheir stories, she sets sail for Guernsey, and what she finds will change her forever.Deprivation was such that the German soldiers would risk execution by stealing food from the islanders, who themselves subsisted mainly on turnip soup and fried their parboiled potatoes by scorching them on an iron.I found this book quite delightful and although at times it brought tears to my eyes, it was also

so interesting to learn so much about the hard-ships that the Channel Islanders went through during the war. It is funny, moving and quite unlike anything I have read for a long time.More About Mary Ann ShafferMary Ann Shaffer had planned to write the biography of Kathleen Scott, wife of the polar explorer Robert Falcon Scott. While researching the subject, she traveled to England, but was discouraged to find that the subjects personal papers were nearly unusable. While dealing with this frustration, she decided to spend some of her planned stay in England by visiting Guernsey in the Channel Islands. However, as soon as she arrived, the airport wasshut down due to heavy fog. She spent her visitin the airport bookstore, reading several historiesof the German occupation of those islands during World War II.It was twenty years before Shaffer began a noveldealing with Guernsey. She had abandoned herplan to write the Scott biography, and said: All I wanted was to write a book that someone would like enough to publish. In 2006 after her manuscript had been acceptedfor publication, the books editor requested somechanges that required substantial rewriting, butaround that time Shaffers health had deteriorateddramatically (she died on 16 February 2008). She asked the daughter of her sister Cynthia, Annie Barrows, who by that time was a well-established author of childrens literature, to finish the editing and rewriting. Barrows did so, and thereby became a listed co-author on the work. Written with warmth and humor as a series of letters, this novel is a celebration of the written word in all its guises, and of finding connection in the most surprising ways.

Considering that for a so many years the DistrictCouncil have been responsible for any repairs on this site, they now claim otherwise. I.E they are not prepared to repair this important local facility.During the meeting run by Harry Hicks & BevReynolds, a number of questions were put from the audience of well over a couple of hundred, it was suggested by Norman Lamb MP that we, as a community, could set up a fund in the village of say 10 each household to be used to repair this loca asset. When this proposal was put to the meeting it appeared that everyone agreed with the idea. What do you think should happen?Let us know! PK

When Our.....................lawn mower broke and wouldnt run, my wife kept hinting to me that I should get it fixed. But, somehow I always had something else to take care of first, the shed, the boat ormaking beer.........Always something more important to me.Finally she thought of a clever way to make herpoint. When I arrived home one day, I found her sitting in the tall grass, busily snipping away with a tiny pair of sewing scissors. I watched silently for a short time and then I went into the house. I was gone only a minute, and when I came out again ....I handed her a toothbrush.I said: When you finish cutting the grass, you might as well sweep the driveway. The doctors say I will walk again, but I will always have a limp.

Thanks to David Thorne for this.

Will Your Will Work?Written by Fiona Hewitt - Director and Head of Private Client Services at Hayes + StorrThe recent case of Ilott v Mitson gave rise tosome sensationalist media coverage and commentWhere theres a Will the person who wrote it may not get their way (the Guardian); and Your Will can be ignored say Judges (Daily Telegraph) are just two examples. The facts of the case were briefly as follows: Melita Jackson died in 2004, leaving her estate of almost 500,000 to charities. Her only daughter, Heather Ilott, a 50 year old mother of 5, was disinherited. Mrs Ilott had fallen out with her mother when she eloped at the age of 17. At the time of her mothers death she was living in a rented house, and was reliant on state benefits. Mrs Ilott made a claim against her mothers estate, and was initially awarded 50,000. She appealed against this in the High Court onthe grounds that it was too little, but the originalorder was then overturned in favour of the charities. When she appealed again, the Court of Appeal decided that she should receive a payment from the estate, and in the end she was awarded around a third of the estate. Despite the media fuss over this and other similarrecent cases, claims by disinherited children are nothing new. Faced with such claims, the court must take into account a number of factors, incl-uding the financial resources and needs of the applicant & beneficiaries, the deceaseds oblig-ations and responsibilities to both the applicant & other beneficiaries, and any relevant disabilities. The conduct of the parties can also be taken into account. Mrs Ilott and her family were in financial need. Mrs Jackson had no particular connection to thecharities she chose to benefit, and the Judge decided that she had acted out of spite rather than because she wanted to support their work. As for conduct, Mrs Ilott had made some attemptsat reconciliation with her mother which had beenrejected, and it was felt that the main cause of thebroken relationship was Mrs Jackson herself. It remains to be seen how much influence this case will have over future decisions, and all casesof this sort depend on the individual facts.

However, the decision to award such a significantsum to someone who was otherwise completely disinherited has caused some unease for both lawyers and their clients. It is not uncommon to want to exclude certain family members from benefitting from an estate. If you decide to do this and you think it may cause problems, it is advisable to take the following steps:

    1. Have a professionally drafted Will in place, clearly and unambiguously setting out your intentions. 2. Make sure you tell your legal advisor all the facts and background so they can advise you properly on the risks and safeguards. 3. Leave a letter of wishes with your Will, explai-ning not only why you wish to exclude someonefrom the Will (or give them only a minimal gift),but also why you particularly wish to pass your estate to your chosen beneficiaries.

Twelve-year-old Mathew Floresis a bit different from the rest of us. He loves junk mail. Until recently, advertisements were the only reading materials available to the boy. Flores loves reading so much thathe approached his mailman in a Salt Lake City suburb to ask if he could have any junk mail.

The strange question prompted the mailman, Ron Lynch, to ask why. Lynch detailed Flores response in a heartbreaking Facebook post afterwards.Today while delivering mail tohis apartment complex, I saw himreading ads, and then he asked me if I had any extra mail he could read, Lynch wrote. He told me his wish is to have books to read. I told him the library had many, but he said they do not have a car, and couldnt afford the bus.

Lynch then asked his Facebook friends if they could spare some books for Flores:Most kids his age want electronics! Its great to see his desire, and you should have seen him beam when I said I could help!Hes counting on me, so I am counting on you! he concluded

Lynch thought the Facebook post might bring in 50 to 60 books, he told local news outlet KSL. But his request went viral.People from around the world, including the U.K., Australia and India, have sent books, Lynch said. He told The Huffington Post that hundreds of books have now been delivered to the boys door so far, with hundreds more likely on their way, and hes amazed at the generosity.

Dreamstone Productions Celebrates 20th Birthday Dreamstone was formed when a company of professional actors found themselves without a theatre. When a friend asked for a different type of entertainment Murder Mysteries were initiated. The then Director of the Company had a series of health problems & was going to fold the companybut because it was a going concern and such funfor the actors Jo & John Berry took it over in 2013. Since then theyve performed 46 Murder Mysteriesin Hotels, Golf Cubs, Halls & on Nth. NorfolkRailway (Murder on the Poppyline Express!) The Railway Murder Mysteries came about whenJo was on a training course at Weybourne with the then Entertainments Manager. When Jo suggested Murder Mysteries on the train the company was contacted & the rest is history! These Murder Mysteries are extremely popular with 6 on the Nth Norfolk Railway this year allfully booked! On 20th November, this year we are performing a special Murder Mystery Dying for an Oscar at the Assembly House in Norwich in aid of MIND. We have about 100 actors, mainly professional to call on and all enjoy the challenge of characterbuilding & improvisation on the hoof. For each event the venue states which era they would like the M.M. set in. We performed a Victorian one at the Manor Hotel in Mundesley based on historical facts. St Trinians M.M.s are very popular as are the Bond themed and WW2.John leads the small team of technicians and wecan call on several photographers. The actors aregiven a copy of the script which is basically the outline of the story & their Character. We thenhave a pre-meet about 10 days before the eventto sort out the Murderer, the victims, costumes etc. and how the story will be acted.

It is then up to the actors to build their characterso we meet at the venue about 2 hours before meeting the guests. The guests are given a pack with the names of the Characters, a bit about thestoryline and an accusation sheet to fill in and hand to the person they think guilty at the end.

The winner is the person who has guessed correctlywith the correct motives & will receive a bottleof wine & certificate. For the MIND Charity M.M.the prize is Tea for Two at the Assembly House! The actors are paid for each performance whichentails visiting each table where guests are seatedas the guests are asked to act detective andquestion the characters.

Only the murderer can lie,the rest must tell the truth as is within their character! One of the characters is a detective, but not without motive, who helps to lead the investigation! There are 2 murders usuallythough one can be a pre-murder with evidence forthe guests to examine! People like viewing the bodies. Below at one of the Poppy Line M.M.s

For any further information and where we are performing please visit our website:www.dreamstoneproductions.co.uk or our Facebook page - please like us!

If you think youd like to join us and have a go at improvisation and character building please contact Jo Berry : [email protected] Its great fun!!
