GCSE Success at Crackerjack Training
GCSE Success
On the 20th August our first cohort of GCSE students received their English and Maths results. We had some excellent results with a pass rate of 50% for Maths, and 60% pass rate for English.
All of these students had to re-take either GCSE Maths or English as they did not achieve the desired C grade at school. With the introduction of the government’s compulsory re-sit policy and the costs implemented with running a GCSE programme, should training providers and FE colleges really have to foot the bill for schools downfall?
In a recent repot from Policy Exchange thinktank, Natasha Porter stated, “It is unfair for some schools to pass the buck to FE colleges, who are already facing extreme funding pressures to fix a problem they have not created themselves. To recognise the additional burden on FE colleges and shoulder more responsibility, schools should cough up and pay a re-sit levy”.
It is not acceptable for young people to leave school without a C in Maths or English, which will undoubtedly hold them back for the rest of their lives. “At a time when employers are crying out for talented workers, young British men and women should be literate and numerate as possible”, Natasha Porter added.
Those who had to re-take GCSE Maths or English in June this year at Crackerjack Training, undertook an intensive learning programme, with teachers having to cram four years of teaching into just one year, putting immense pressure on both staff and students.
The hard work has really paid off and we are extremely proud of our students achievements.

A Day in the life of a Maths and English Teacher
9:00 The first thing we do when we come in is check our emails and discuss with each
other what we have planned for the day, e.g. lessons, tests and if there are any meetings
planned.
9:30 Up to ten new students are booked in for BKSB diagnostic initial assessments in
Maths, English and ICT. We take it in turns to moderate the assessments in the ICT suite.
The results of the assessments break down what a student’s strengths and weaknesses
are in different areas of Maths, English and ICT, enabling us to create an individual plan of
learning for each student.
11:00 Throughout the week we all teach both Traineeship and Apprenticeship groups.
Depending on what course a student is enrolled on determines if they are going to be
having lessons for Functional Skills or GCSE. If a student has already achieved a C grade
or above in Maths, English or ICT means that they are exempt and do not have to take this
part of the course.
12:00 Lunch
12:30 In the afternoon, we spend a lot of time planning and creating schemes of work,
Individual lesson plans and designing worksheets. As we are a relatively new GCSE centre,
this area of our work is ongoing and takes up quite a lot of our time.
2:30 Functional Skills tests are booked throughout the week and are always arranged in
advance with the Apprentice and their employer. Depending on previous qualifications, an
Apprentice may have to take all three exams – Maths, English and ICT, with each exam
lasting up to an hour and a half.
4:00 Marking also takes up quite a lot of our time. It’s really important that we keep up to
date with marking assignments and giving feedback back to the student as soon as
possible. Keeping up to date with marking can also help us plan our lessons, as if a subject
that has already has been taught produces unsatisfactory work by the students, it may
need revisiting.
5:15 Go home.

Crackerjack Library Opening in September
A recent published study undertaken by Sheffield University revealed that 17% of
school leavers were functionally illiterate and nearly one-fifth of 16-19 year olds have a
reading age of 11 or below.
Throughout primary school, there has always been a strong emphasis on literacy and
reading skills, which is often lost in secondary schools. One of the authors of the study,
Greg Brookes said that school leavers, “had a lower standard of literacy that is needed
to partake fully in employment, family life, citizenship and to enjoy reading for its own
sake”.
In a bid to encourage our students to read more, we have transformed one of our
smaller classrooms into a library. The Library is stocked with a wide variety of books,
magazines and newspapers, which have all been kindly donated by staff. There is also
a good supply of industry specific journals and articles, motivating students to keep up
to date with current topics and changes within the sector.
Students will be able to access the library at lunch times and after class, as well as
being able to take books out on loan.
We are also encouraging students who borrow books to write a book review and let
others know their thoughts and views.
The library has been the project of Claire Bottomley, Functional Skill and GCSE Co-
Ordinator and looks to be a real success.
* The library will be manned at lunch times from 12:15-1pm starting in September.
The students have been hard at
work in their English class creating
an Equality and Diversity Tree for
the new library.
The tree depicts nine topics of
Equality and Diversity on its
branches with examples on the
leaves. The roots show how our
views towards Equality and
Diversity are influenced by things
such as the media, films and our
peers.
The tree is now up in the new
library and looks amazing!

Macmillan Coffee Morning We will be getting our bake on for the worlds biggest coffee morning on Friday 25th
September to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support and CLIC Sargent.
The students will be organising and planning the event, utilising their Maths and English skills
to design posters and work to a budget when buying ingredients for their cakes.
Our students will also be on hand at the coffee morning taking donations.
This year we will be donating to both Macmillan and CLIC Sargent for Children and Young
People with Cancer.
If you are in the area why not pop in for a lovely cake or two!
