Preface

It provides a context for the issues, opportunities and strategies identified within the FederalGovernment’s Sustainable Regions Programme which is a major initiative under the StrongerRegions: A Stronger Australia Statement.

The statistics, which provide key background information, can be used to support the decision makingprocesses that may be undertaken in the Region for sustained economic and communitydevelopment.

The content has been drawn mainly from Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) data but has also beensupplemented by data from a range of other sources, such as the Australian Taxation Office, theDepartment of Family and Community Services and several state and local government agencies. TheDepartment of Transport and Regional Services wishes to acknowledge the assistance provided bythese agencies.

This profile is one of a series of eight profiles that have been produced for the Regions identified forthe Sustainable Regions Programme. The eight Regions are:

Atherton Tablelands (Qld) Kimberley (WA)Campbelltown/Camden (NSW) Cradle Coast Region TasmaniaFar North East NSW Playford/Salisbury (SA)Gippsland (Vic.) Wide Bay–Burnett (Qld)

A standard set of indicators are presented for each of the eight Regions. A number of other indicatorsare also presented according to the characteristics of each Region. For example, sections on tourismand mining may appear in the Kimberley Overview because they are important to that Region, butthese topics may not appear in the Playford/Salisbury Overview because the activities are eitherrelatively minor or non-existent.

Cradle Coast Region Tasmania v

This Regional Profile provides a broad overview of the social, economic and environmentalcharacteristics of the Cradle Coast Region Tasmania.
