FROM THE D IRECTOR OF THEATRE PRODUCTION

I am thrilled to be the Director of Theatre Production this year and to welcome you all in our theatre spaces! We are facing an exciting new year at the Department of Theatre and Drama. First, a heartfelt thank you to David Furumoto for his work and leadership as Director of Theatre Production for the last three years. David will return to full time teaching, directing, and playwriting and you will be able to see his new production Wondrous Tales of Old Japan II in the spring of 2013. Second, I like to introduce some new faces. Shuxing Fan has joined us as

resident Set Designer and professor. He brings in a wealth of experience in design and new media, both from his native China and his decades of work in the United States. Rob Wagner joins us as Scenic Studio Supervisor. Rob, too, has extensive experience running scene shops. Michael Cobb joins us this year from the Denver Center Theatre Company as Visiting Assistant Professor in voice. For the fall semester Jessie Vacchiano is our Produc-tion Stage Manager and alumnus Jono de Leon joins us as Light Studio Supervisor. Finally, alumnus Jim Stauffer is our new Undergraduate Advisor, thanks to the Madison Under-graduate Initiative. Jim will advise the Theatre and Drama undergrads as well as students in the Asian American Studies Program.

We kick off the season with some more new faces. I Can’t Go On. I’ll Go On features the new MFA Acting/Directing students in six short plays by Samuel Beckett, directed by Beckett performance specialist Patricia Boyette. This production, as well as the other shows in the season, also involves the new MFA students in Tech and Design, as well as students in the MA/PhD program. Next, we produce the 1937 Federal Theatre Project Mu-sical, The Cradle Will Rock, a critique of corruption, commerce and humanity’s value in the face of unchecked capitalism— issues that continue to divide our country and state. This production is directed by Norma Saldivar, with music direction by Scott Foss. In the spring semester we see George Büchner’s Woyzeck, a retelling of a news account about a young soldier who murdered his lover, directed by Kristin Hunt. David Furumoto’s Wondrous Tales of Old Japan is our annual Theatre for Young Audiences (TYA) Production, which, as last year’s TYA Production will travel to Frank Lloyd Wright’s Hillside Theatre in Taliesin for an extended run for local schools, thanks to the Ira and Ineva Baldwin Wisconsin Idea Endowment Grant. We will close the season with Caryl Churchill’s sexy Cloud Nine, a race and gender-bending exploration of the struggle for sexual, political, and personal iden-tity, directed by Patrick Sims.

ALONE AT THE P IANO, UNITED IN THE THEATRE

Marc Blitzstein sat alone at the piano.

He sat there in his mid-Twenties as a booming economy built on rapid growth and speculative investment came crashing down. He sat there as a crisis on Wall Street spread to Main Street. When banks closed by the dozen, businesses closed by the hundred. He sat, working at whatever projects he could find to make ends meet, as unemployment hit 25 percent in an era when most families only had one wage earner to begin with. Blitzs-tein sat at his piano as workers everywhere were forced to settle for wages that couldn’t sustain a family and conditions that put them in danger.

Marc Blitzstein sat alone at the piano, writing a short sketch about a young woman trying to survive as a prostitute. He played the sketch for famed German playwright Bertolt Brecht in the summer of 1936. Brecht suggested he expand the sketch into a full opera. After all, hadn’t people in every profession sold their dignity for money in these times? A few months later, when Blitzstein’s wife suddenly died, he took up Brecht’s suggestion and wrote The Cradle Will Rock in four blinding weeks.

As the next few months went by, Blitzstein again sat at various pianos and performed his piece entirely alone. He played and sang it for various directors and producers, looking for someone who would bring it to life. When John Houseman and Orson Welles offered to produce and direct the show for Project 891 of the Federal Theatre Project, they in-sisted he play it again for Hallie Flanagan, the Project’s embattled director. Flanagan loved the piece, but the content gave her pause. She asked Blitzstein to take a train down to Washington and play it for Harry Hopkins, the head of the entire Works Progress Adminis-tration. Hopkins said yes, and rehearsals began.

As the production approached opening night, disaster struck. The Federal Theatre Project had become a partisan football, and it was facing huge punitive budget cuts by members of Congress who found some recent anti-fascist and pro-labor work by the FTP politically unpalatable. In a panic, the FTP shut down all of its productions, including The Cradle Will Rock.

After a single preview performance, the cast and crew found their theatre under armed guard. The show would not go on, and no one was allowed to remove scenery, costumes, or music from the theatre. Welles and Houseman boldly announced that there would be a show no matter what, and they frantically called around to find a theatre and a piano even as hundreds of spectators arrived on the sidewalk. They found a theatre twenty-three blocks away, and raced away in taxis. As the spectators walked uptown, their num-ber swelled to nearly two thousand.

Not everything was solved. Both the musicians’ and actors’ unions had ruled that their members could not take part in a show outside their original FTP contracts. Most of the cast found themselves buying tickets to their own show, and sitting out in the house with everyone else. Welles, Houseman, and Blitzstein found that if the composer played the show from the stage, it became a “concert” instead of an “opera.”

So, on June 16, 1937, Marc Blitzstein sat alone at the piano one more time. He began playing his show as he’d done so many times. This time, though, something new hap-pened. A voice joined his. Olive Stanton, the young and completely apolitical actress cast as Moll, stood up in the house and sang her part from the seat she’d paid for. Abe Feder, the lighting designer, swung the single followspot he’d found out to the house to shine

on Stanton. As the show went on, other actors stood up and joined in. One by one, every actor present stood up and sang the show from the audience. Duets were sung across twenty rows of seats. Blitzstein sang the parts of any missing actors, and played the entire score.

Throughout the night, the audience sat on the edge of their seats. The show was not confined to the privileged stage space, and sitting in the house didn’t provide any sort of safety from being caught up directly in the action. The distinction between actor and spectator became simply irrelevant, as merely buying in the ticket and partaking in the event became a political – even revolutionary act. When they all stood at the end of the night, they all stood for something bigger than that one performance. They stood in sup-port of art that had overcome censorship, adversity, and opposition.

And that, ultimately, is the enduring lesson of Cradle. It reminds us that, though we may enter the theatre alone, like Marc Blitzstein at that piano, we need not leave alone. Even now, as history is being rewritten on cable television and the word “liberty” is again used as a weapon, we can stand together. If we take care of each other and show a little bit of courage, single people can, like the fingers of Larry’s Foreman’s hand, combine into a fist more powerful than we can imagine.

WHO’S WHO

Actors

George Abbott (Gus) George graduated with a double major of a BA in Music and a BS in Math from the University of North Texas. He has 18 years of choral experience starting with the Children’s Chorus of San Antonio at age nine. After graduating from UNT, he taught middle school math in the Dallas ISD for one year before attending Texas A&M to get his MS in Chemical Engineering. He moved to Madison to work at Epic, and has since moved on to pursue a perfor-mance career. His recent credits include singing with: Madison Bach Musicians, Candid Concert Opera, and is currently cast in the upcoming Fresco Opera Theater’s production of The Real Divas of Dane County.

Amy Bahr (Attendant/Reporter 1) Amy is a se-nior majoring in Theatre and Drama as an Acting Specialist and also pursuing a second major in International Studies. She has previously worked with the Undergraduate Theater Association, ap-pearing as Vera in The Female Odd Couple as well as the UTA Blitz. While not acting, Amy enjoys traveling with and planning volunteer trips for the Alternative Breaks Committee. She is incred-ibly grateful for the opportunity to work on this show with such a talented cast and crew, as well as to her family and friends for their constant support and love!

Katie Behrend (Mrs. Mister) Katie, a senior in the UW Madison Theatre and Drama department, is thrilled to be making her University Theatre debut in The Cradle Will Rock. Katie studied musical theatre for two years in New York at the prestigious Tisch School of the Arts at New York University. There she was privileged to work with industry professionals and asked to sing at a gala honoring the famous Broadway composer Jason Robert Brown, composer of Songs for a New World and Parade. Her most recent credits include Songs for a New World, I Love You You’re Perfect Now Change, and Spelling Bee.

Pete Bissen (Mr. Mister) Pete is very happy to be a part of this production and immensely grateful to Norma, Scott, Patrick, Mike, Jami, the cast, crew, design teams and everyone else who made it possible. This play was such a labor of love and dedication from top to bottom, and I just hope you enjoy it half as much as we en-joyed making it. As always, in everything I do, I must thank my wife Kathy for the sacrifices she,

Malia and Kiara make so I can do this. I’m pretty sure she would comment that ultimately it’s better I am behaving like an evil snot outside of the house and away from them than AT home. Although I’m pretty sure she wouldn’t mind me bringing home a Mr. Mister income . . . fat chance. Please, enjoy.

Morgan Boland (Moll) Morgan recently gradu-ated from UW Madison as an acting specialist. Recent credits include Maureen from Four Season’s RENT, Eurydice from UT’s Eurydice, and Rose of Sharon from UT’s The Grapes of Wrath. Morgan would like to thank the members of her band for being so patient with all of the rehearsal conflicts!

Jennifer DeMain (Ella) A Madison native, Jenni-fer is currently a junior vocal performance major at UW Madison, studying with Julia Faulkner. She has performed roles with Madison Opera including Young Maria Celeste in Galileo, Galilei and Flora in The Turn of the Screw. Her theatre career began at Edgewood High School where she performed the roles of Reno Sweeney in Anything Goes, Juror #4 in Twelve Angry Jurors; Rosemary in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying; Minnie Fay in The Matchmaker; and Nicky Cricker in The Mystery of Edwin Drood. Most recently Jennifer was a member of the ensemble in a production of Verdi’s Aida with the Glimmer-glass Festival. Upcoming performances include a role in the University Opera Scenes performance, and an ensemble role in Acis and Galatea with Madison Opera. This is Jennifer’s first University Theatre production.

Christopher Fechtelkotter (Larry Foreman) Chris is absolutely thrilled to be part of this (cradle) rockin’ cast! A junior at UW Madison double-majoring in Vocal Performance and Theatre & Drama, Chris enjoys stargazing and singing opera/show tunes in the shower. He was seen recently in Madison Savoyards’ Pirates of Penzance, CTM’s A Christmas Carol, University Opera’s La Boheme, and as Scarecrow in The Wizard of Oz. His dream roles include Fiyero in Wicked, Phantom in Phantom of the Opera, and Tom Collins in RENT. All the thanks and love in the world go to his family and friends; he’d be nothing without them!

Madeline Gore (Dr. Specialist) Madeline is abso-lutely delighted to be a part of UT’s production of The Cradle Will Rock. She is a freshman at UW

Madison and is very excited to be involved in college theater. She previously has been in Cin-derella as the Ugly Step Sister (Portia), A Christ-mas Carol as Mrs. Cratchit, Of Mice and Men as Curley’s Wife, and Assassins as Emma Goldman. Although she is passionate about theater, she is majoring in Molecular Biology and Spanish and hopes to go to medical school in the future.

Matt Huston (Rev. Salvation) Matt is a senior at UW majoring in Psychology and Marketing. He is thrilled to be working with the amazing cast and crew of The Cradle Will Rock to tell this powerful story. Some past Madison credits include Songs for a New World (Man 1); Bat Boy:The Musical (Reverend/Mrs. Taylor/Roy/Ram); Love, Death, Brains (Zack); and Wisconsin Singers (Singer/Dancer). He would like to thank Norma and Scott for the opportunity, everyone in the cast, orchestra, and crew for all their hard work to bring the story to life, and his friends and family for their support. Enjoy the show!

Victoria Kemnetz (Sister Mister) Victoria is proud to make this her University Theatre debut. She is a senior at UW-Madison hoping to graduate in the spring with a theater and drama degree. She has recently been involved with CWCT’s Bunnicula: The Musical, Four Seasons Theater’s RENT and My Fair Lady and Music The-ater of Madison’s The Secret Garden. Originally from Wausau, WI, theater has always been a part of her life and she hopes to continue that trend after graduation.

Haley Kosup-Kennedy (Dauber) Haley is a senior at UW Madison pursuing a degree in Theatre & Drama with a specialization in acting. Before her turn as Dauber in The Cradle Will Rock, she appeared in UT’s productions of The Mouse-trap, Bat Boy: The Musical, [title of show], and The Rocky Horror Show. She has also co-founded, per-formed with, and choreographed for Mill Street Guild, a musical performance group in Plymouth, Wisconsin. Haley would like to thank her mother for being the wind at her back and the cast and crew for their talent and skill.

Cody Luck (Prof. Scott/Clerk) Cody is a junior at UW majoring in Theater. He is thrilled to be part of his first University Theater production, and with such an amazing cast and crew! Huge thanks to everybody that is a part of the show for making this amazing opportunity possible, and also to all of his friends and family for all of their support!

Joe Lullo (Druggist) Joe is thrilled to be a part of The Cradle Will Rock. He would like to thank 100% of the audience members for seeing the show tonight. Joe spent the last summer acting for Door Shakespeare, and the two previous summers with APT. Joe has also acted at summer stock and dinner theater venues in Wisconsin, and he toured the states with CLIMB Theater and Mis-soula Children’s Theater. Kate Mann (Prof. Prexy) Kate is thrilled to be making her University Theatre debut with the cast of Cradle! She is a sophomore majoring in Theatre and Drama and Communication Arts and is a member of the university’s Undergradu-ate Theatre Association. Memorable credits include South Pacific (Cora), Phantom of the Opera, Saving Grace (Sadie), Footloose (Rusty), and Grease (Marty).

Stuart Mott (Editor Daily) Stuart is very excited to return to the Mitchell stage for Cradle. Stuart is a senior honors major studying Theatre & Drama as an Acting Specialist. Recent credits include Love Death Brains (FringeNYC), Panic (MTM), The Mousetrap, Two Gentlemen of Verona, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, and Bat Boy: The Musi-cal (University Theatre). Stuart’s motion capture work appears in Activision’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. This March, he will be performing his senior thesis role in 9 Circles by Bill Cain. Thank you to this fantastic cast, to Norma and Scott, and to his family for all their love and support.

Eva Nimmer (Yasha) Eva is excited to have worked with so many talented people to bring this unique show to life! Previous college performance credits include: Janet in The Rocky Horror Show) and Sylvie in The Female Odd Couple. Eva spent this past summer in Germany studying the language, touring cathedrals and milking goats. She will graduate with degrees in Theatre and German this spring. After that, she’ll keep working to make her passion a career. Eva enjoys watching Mad Men and listening to jazz (sometimes at the same time). Alejandro Ortiz (Cop/Bugs/Reporter 2) This is Alejandro’s second UT production. His first was Ti-Jean and His Brothers in which he played the part of Gros Jean. He is currently a junior major-ing in Theatre and Drama. He plans to graduate next spring and walk into the great void known as the real world. He hopes that the audience will enjoy this production.

Ian August Ostroot (Gent/Prof. Trixie/Steve) Ian is a senior majoring in Theater and History. He has previously been seen in Elephant’s Graveyard and Undergraduate Theater’s production of The Female Odd Couple last spring. He decided to pursue acting after taking a course his freshman year at the University of Wisconsin and credits his friends for helping make the choice to, “Do the things that make you happy. Simple.” He’d like to thank his family. Love to the whole cast.

Natalie Perry (Sadie) Natalie is excited to be in her first University Theatre show! She is currently a junior majoring in Theatre and Drama. A native New Yorker, Natalie participated in many high school and community shows and spent sum-mers at the performing arts camp Stagedoor Manor. Favorite credits include Rapunzel in Into the Woods and Rose in The Secret Garden. Thanks to her wonderful boyfriend Cody, lovely room-mates, and other friends and family!

Hannah Ripp-Dieter (Prof. Mamie) Hannah is incredibly honored to be a part of this amazing cast and production. She is very excited for her first appearance in a UT show. Favorite past roles include Celia in As You Like It and Helena in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. She was most recently seen in Music Theatre of Madison’s production of Parade. Hannah would like to thank her family and friends for putting up with her shenanigans.

August Wesley (Junior Mister/Dick) August is a senior wrapping up his tenure here at UW Madi-son. His most recent credits include Mr. Paravicini in The Mousetrap and Manolo in The Female Odd Couple. He would like to thank Norma and Scott for the opportunity to be a part of this production. Encounters with minds as brilliant as Norma’s are rare and game-changing. August enjoys rare and game-changing encounters. A hefty hug to his muse in love and life, Samantha. Infinite thanks for the support from his family, the comfort of his dog, and his irreplaceable friends. This performance is dedicated to hu-mans. Because it’s hard to be one.

Artistic/Production Staff

Norma Saldivar (Director) is in her 14th year on the faculty as a Professor in the Department of Theatre and Drama, Head of the Graduate Directing Program. Originally from Chicago, Ms. Saldivar arrived to Madison via Milwaukee where she worked as a freelance stage director and member of the Milwaukee Repertory Theater artistic staff. While in Wisconsin, she has directed several productions ranging from classical to new works for Milwaukee and Madison theatres. Nationally, she has served as casting director, dramaturg and producer for productions in Chi-cago, Los Angeles, Seattle and Milwaukee. She has directed several critically acclaimed world and Midwestern premieres on both coasts and in the Midwest. She has directed, taught Master Classes and workshops at several universities including University of Southern California, UCLA, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and UW-Whitewater. She has received awards for her new play development and for excellence in teaching and has served and continues to serve on several arts advisory boards, councils and grant-reviewing committees. She is the Execu-tive Director of University of Wisconsin-Madison Arts Institute.

Scott Foss (Music Director) Mr. Foss, known throughout the United States as a conductor and clinician of both sacred and secular choral music, is the director of concert and classi-cal choral music for Hal Leonard Publishing. In that role he is responsible for Boosey & Hawkes, G. Schirmer and Mark Foster Choral. Prior to assuming his position with Hal Leon-ard, Scott spent 21 years as executive editor for Roger Dean Publishing Company. Roger Dean is the branch of The Lorenz Corporation that specializes in serious choral repertoire, as well as sophisticated keyboard literature, chal-lenging instrumental solos and ensembles, and music textbooks. Mr. Foss also serves as Director of Music at the First United Method-ist Church in Madison where he conducts the Senior Choir, Chamber Choir and Handbell Choir and coordinates the activities of a variety of other musical organizations with the church. Beyond the standard expectations of a church music program, Mr. Foss has devel-oped a theatre group at the church which has mounted full fledged productions of Jesus Christ Superstar, Amahl and the Night Visitors,

the Leonard Bernstein Mass at the Wisconsin Union Theater, the Duke Ellington Sacred Concert no. 2 and N. 1, Dave Brubeck’s To Hope and a dramatic series during the season of Lent. Mr. Foss has directed more than 30 musical theatre productions for CTM-Madison Family Theatre, Madison Repertory Theatre, Four Seasons Theatre and The University of Wisconsin Theatre Dept. He learned the music industry end of the music profession at Ward Brodt Music Company where he was choral music manager and general manager of the sheet music department for 11 years. In that role, he nurtured the sheet music department into one of the largest and most respected operations in the country. Mr. Foss was the Di-rector of the Wisconsin Singers, the vocal jazz and show choir at the University of Wisconsin-Madison from 1977-1988. Under his direction, the Singers performed throughout the United States and Mexico. Mr. Foss’s most important and demanding duties take place in Madison where he and his wife, acclaimed mezzo-so-prano and voice teacher Kitt Reuter-Foss, live and support their two daughters, Alli and Erika who are both Broadway singer/dancers.

Maureen Janson (Choreographer) Maureen is pleased to return to UT where she has con-tributed to numerous productions since 2005! Regional choreography credits include Fox Valley Rep, Artistic Home (where she is an artistic associate), The Hypocrites, Griffin Theatre, Remy Bumppo, Great River Shakespeare, Madison Rep and many seasons with American Play-ers Theatre. Most recently, her work has been featured in Madison Opera’s A Masked Ball, and in 44 Plays for 44 Presidents with Forward Theater. Other recent local choreography includes Four Seasons Theatre, Children’s Theatre of Madison, and Kanopy Dance Company. Upcoming proj-ects include the acclaimed remount of Pirates of Penzance with The Hypocrites in both Chicago and Boston at American Repertory Theatre. She has taught and performed nationwide, and is a certified specialist in yoga for scoliosis. Maureen is the proud recipient of the 2011 Choreography and Performance Award from the Wisconsin Dance Council, and she dedicates her work to the memory of her loving father, Gene Janson.

Niffer Pflager (Scenic Designer) Niffer has been designing sets for the last eleven years. She re-ceived her BA in Theatre at Minnesota State Univer-

sity Moorhead in 2006, and is currently a third-year MFA Scene Design candidate at UW Madison. She is designed last season’s productions of Ti Jean and His Brothers and Pedro and the War Cantata.Sarah Woodworth (Costume Designer) Sarah is a third-year MFA graduate student in Costume Design at University of Wisconsin-Madison and received her Bachelors of Science in Theatre Design and Technology from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. Past costume design credits include Two Gentlemen of Verona, Bat Boy: The Musical, You Can’t Take it With You, Twelfth Night, Assassins!, Intimate Apparel, Ruthless!, The Secretaries, Mary’s Wedding, Road to Mecca, Fugi-tive Songs, Polaroid Stories, and Katatonika (2009 Prague International Fringe Festival). She would like to thank the director, cast and crew for mak-ing this show a success and her future husband for all of his support and love.

Hideaki Tsutsui (Lighting Designer) Hideaki is from Sapporo, Japan, and a member of USA 829, earned a MFA in Lighting Design at Florida State University. New York credits include: Garth Fagan Dance 40th Anniversary at Joyce Theatre, Osvaldo Golijov’s La Pasión Según San Marcos, Moscow Circus USA Tour, Midtown International Theater Festival, and Mikel Rouse’s The End of Cinematics and Gravity Radio at Brooklyn Acad-emy of Music. He also worked as an assistant lighting designer for Jules Fisher and Peggy Eisenhauer. Hideaki was the Lighting Designer and VP of Operations for Eggshell Lighting in Hawaii, where he designed over 100 corporate events, concerts, and television shows such as the PBS Hawaii, Cindy Lauper, General Motors and FENDI Fashion Show to name a few. Hideaki was also one of the designers for APEC Confer-ence events in 2011. His 100% LED show: The Three Musketeers at the University of Texas at El Paso where Hideaki is the Assistant Professor of Lighting Design, was featured in Stage Direction, PLSN and Lighting and Sound America. Hideaki has been the lighting designer for Lantern Floating Festival in Honolulu, Hawaii. The event attracts over forty thousand spectators each year. He continues to work as a freelance lighting designer for clients around the world.

Jack Sayre (Sound Designer) is a composer, sound designer, and educator. He has lent his talents to over 30 theater productions over the last 15 years for Madison theaters; The Madison Rep, CTM Productions and UW Theater. Recent

Michael Cobb (Vocal Coach) Michael, pleased to be joining the Department of Theatre and Drama as Visiting Assistant Professor, has served as Head of Voice, Speech, and Text at the National Theatre Conservatory and vocal coach for the Denver Center Theatre Company and the American Repertory Theatre. He has taught at the A.R.T./Moscow Art Theatre School Institute, the University of Utah, Saint Lawrence University, the State University of New York at Potsdam, and Rhode Island College. He holds an M.F.A. from the Institute for Advanced Theatre Training at Harvard, an M.A. from Brown University, and is a graduate of the Trinity Rep Conservatory.

Mike Hennessy (Stage Manager) Mike Hennessy is a senior at UW Madison and is exhilarated to end his UT Stage Management career with the fantastic musical The Cradle Will Rock. He would like to thank the cast and crew for all their hard work and energy to create such a tremendous production, and for being so wonderful to work with. Previous UT Shows include Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Bat Boy: The Musical, [title of show], The Rocky Horror Show, and Valparaiso. Special thanks to his ASM Jami, girlfriend Jenny, brother Dan, mentor D-Stew, all the stage managers be-fore me, and the family back home in Appleton.

Allyn Weber (Technical Director) Allyn, a veteran of University Theatre, is happy to be serving as the Technical Director for University Theatre’s production of The Cradle Will Rock. His recent work includes Werther with The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts (as Assistant Technical Director), I’ll Can’t Go On. I’ll Go On., The Mousetrap, Two Gentlemen of Verona, Ti Jean and His Brothers and Eurydice for University Theatre and Grease and The Music Man for The Heartland Festival at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville (as Technical Director), and productions of La Boheme, Carmen, The Barber of Seville, among many others with Washington National Opera (as Properties Coordinator). Allyn would like to thank his loving wife Anne Marie and daughter Katelyn for their support and Penny and Guin-ness, his two vigilant guard dogs, for keeping the house safe and the yard free of squirrels.

Scott Harman (dramaturg) Scott is a third-year Ph.D. student in the Department of Theatre and Drama. He holds an MA in Theatre History from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He has served on the faculty of Alma College, Parkland College, and is a longtime summer faculty member at the Interlochen Center for the Arts. This past summer, he served as drama-turg on the Interlochen Shakespeare Festival’s production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and worked with award-winning playwright Ken Ludwig on a production of Ludwig’s new play Midsummer/Jersey. Scott’s primary research is on the intersection of cognitive science and acting theory. He also performs regularly, most recently as Sturdyvant in UT’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Dr. Parker in Bat Boy: The Musical, and the Trainer in the Antagonists’ Production of Elephant’s Graveyard.

FR IENDS OF THE UNIVERS IT Y THEATRE

The FRIENDS of UT is a group of individuals that serves as a support organization for UW Madison’s University Theatre, providing members with opportunities to connect with and offer support for student actors, dramaturgs, directors, and designers involved in University Theatre productions. FRIENDS of UT plan and host receptions prior to productions, enjoy exceptional performances together, and work to encourage broader awareness and appreciation of the UW Department of Theatre and Drama throughout the community.

Funds raised by FRIENDS of UT will provide much needed production support, including techni-cal enhancements such as state-of-the-art equipment upgrades, as well as special guest artist residencies that will support the training of our students.

In the past, Friends of UT have enjoyed invitations to a special post-performance reception with Olympia Dukakis as well as a pre-performance discussion with show directors. They sponsored a visit with Anthony Rapp (from the original Broadway cast of RENT). Funds raised were used to sup-port a Suzuki acting workshop with Brandeis Professor Eric Hill and several guest sound designers.

The group sponsored a day trip for FUT members and UT students to Ten Chimneys in Genesee Depot, WI. Last season the group attended a performance of the play Ten Chimneys being pro-duced by the Milwaukee Repertory Theatre.

Cameras and Recorders: No photographs or recordings may be made during the performance.

Restrooms: Restrooms and drinking fountains for patron use are located in the lower level of the theatre lobby. Wheelchair accessible facilities are available on the lobby level. Please use lower level facilities unless special needs dictate otherwise.

Emergency Calls: Doctors and parents are asked to leave the campus security phone number, 264-2677, with their service or sitter. Please inform the house manager of your seat location if the possibility of a call exists.

In order not to disturb other patrons, please turn off all paging devices, electonic devices, cell phones and watch alarms.

Latecomers: Performances begin promptly. Latecomers will be seated only at a suitable break, which in some cases may not be until intermission.

Exchanges and Refunds: No refunds are given, but exchanges may be made up to 24 hours prior to the ticketed performance date when tickets are available. Patrons who cannot use their tickets are asked to contact the Vilas Hall Box Office 24 hours in advance of the performance. Postdated tickets have no value and cannot be exchanged. Unused tickets can be donated to the theatre for resale, the proceeds of which will go to improvements of the theatre.

Ticketing: Any person entering the theatre must have a ticket. Babes in arms can not be admitted. UT discourages bringing small children to the theatre except when the production is specifically for young audiences.

Accessibility: University Theatre can accommodate your special needs. Call 265-2787 for information regarding wheelchair accessibility and hearing-assist systems.

Parking: Parking passes are available for purchase by arts patrons in UW owned parking lots close to venues. Call Campus Arts Ticketing at 265-2787 for more information.
