Support all Catholic Education: “Great Beginnings last a lifetime.”

As they continued their journey he entered a village where a woman whose name was Martha welcomed him. She had a sister named Mary [who] sat beside the Lord at his feet listening to him speak. Martha, burdened with much serving, came to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me by myself to do the serving? Tell her to help me.” The Lord said to her in reply, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things. There is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her.” Which of the sisters was correct? To which of the sisters do you identify? Busy-ness is good. People who stay active tend to live longer. Busy-ness can keep us focused on what is good, productive and holy. At the same time, busy-ness can also be a distraction. It can keep us from attending to someone or something important. Prayer, that is, attending to the presence of the Lord, is something good. As we spend time with God, learning who He is, we also learn more about ourselves. Learning about Jesus and the saints helps us to grow as Christian people. In His words, we are given advice and hope for the future. Prayer has also been used as a distraction from addressing important issues in life. Some people have felt drawn to spend time in prayer when what was truly needed was their presence in their families, workplace or church. While Jesus seems to defend Mary, He was not someone who sat around praying. Jesus was a person of prayer and action. His words to Martha are revealing, “You are anxious and worried about many things...” That is the time to draw near to Jesus and learn from Him. Not for the purpose of withdrawing from the source of the worry or anxiousness, but so that we may properly address those issues. So, let us pray for the grace to have the spirit of Martha and Mary.

Saint James the Apostle James the Apostle, was one of the 12 original apostles. He was a fisherman and was one of the first apostles to be called by Jesus. James and his brother John and Simon Peter were invited by Jesus to witness events no one else saw: the raising of the daughter of Jairus from

the dead (Mark 5:37-47), the transfiguration (Matthew 17:1-3) and Jesus’ agony in the Garden of Gethsemme (Matthew 26:36-37). James’ zeal for Jesus resulted in his being the first of the 12 apostles to be martyred. He was killed with the sword on order of King Herod Agrippa I of Judea, about 44 A.D., in a general persecution of the early church. His feast day is July 25th.
