DO YOU KNOW? Questions to ponder as a family

Sponsored by St. Gianna’s Witnesses An Angel appeared to Zechariah and told him to

name his unborn child John. Where was Zechariah when the

angel appeared to him?

Answer: According to the practice of the priestly service, he was chosen by lot to enter the sanctu-ary of the Lord to burn incense. There, the angel appeared to him, standing at the right of the altar of incense. (Luke 1:9-11)

February 9, 2020

We had an amazing time celebrating our wonderful school, and Catholic Schools in general, during Catholic Schools Week 2020! We dressed crazy, competed in math games, did science experiments, built bird feeders, made cookies for Meals on Wheels, read stories, went bowling, learned about the Saints & played volleyball. (The 8th grade class swept the staff.) Most importantly, we celebrated our faith. Thank you all for continuing to help us provide a faith-filled, high-level, Catholic education to these incredible children!

Meals on Wheels

February is St. Gregory’s month to provide desserts for our senior citizens. There is still a need for baked goods, pudding, Jell-O, and fruit. If you are able to help, please check bulletin for further information.

SAINT JOSEPHINE BAKHITA “Save Darfur!” That cry echoes around the world and in the heart of the Church, where a child of Darfur is one of our newest saints: Josephine (her baptismal name) Bakhita. Kidnapped at nine, sold in Sudan’s slave-markets, flogged daily till covered with scars, Bakhita was finally bought by Italians and taken to Italy. There Bakhita discovered a “Master” who had himself been flogged to redeem her from slavery! “I am truly loved,” she thought, “and awaited by this Love.” Baptized, she often kissed the baptismal font, exclaiming, “Here I became a daughter of God!” For fifty years as a Daughter of Charity, Bakhita provided cheerful hospitality to all who knocked at the convent door. In her final illness, she relived slavery’s horror: “Please, loosen these chains,” she begged the nurse. “They are so heavy!” Her last words were: “Our Lady! Our Lady!” Pope John Paul II canonized her in the Jubilee Year 2000, praising God for leading her “from abject slavery to the dignity of being your daughter and the Bride of Christ.”

My Great Delight is to Unite Myself with Souls. (St. Faustina’s Diary: 1385) Please join our group in venerating the Divine Mercy of God each Monday at 2:45 pm in St. Gregory Church. The Addiction Recovery Ministry will celebrate its one-year anniversary on Sunday, February 9, with an Anointing Mass for those who are struggling with addiction or in recovery. The Mass takes place at 3:00 pm at Madonna of Jerusalem Church (201 9th Street, Sharpsburg, PA 15215). Following Mass, an activity and refreshments will be held in the Pope John Paul I Center, directly across from the church. Thank You to All Volunteers who serve at our liturgies. Please keep in mind, Sunday and Holy Day attire is business casual. You should dress in a manner befitting a representative of the Church; but be comfortable. On the celebrations of greater solemnity (Christmas, Easter, etc.) a more formal attire is appropriate. Wearing blue jeans, athletic wear, spaghetti straps, shorts, flip flops, tennis shoes, attire displaying sports logos/political references/other advertisements are not considered appropriate attire for ministry. Any outerwear (coats/jackets/hats/etc.) should be removed before coming forward to serve.

NOTICE For St. Gregory Parish & School Members — The Diocesan Legal Department provided notification to our Parish which requires us to limit accessibility to the school buildings to protect our children. On January 28, the St. Gregory Finance Council approved that ALL key fobs for St. Gregory Parish and School (except those provided to employees) be deactivated and no longer open any exterior doors as of February 14. Key fobs will be individually activated as needed per activity/event on a temporary basis. Please contact Debi at the school office if you need access to the building. The Lawn Fete Committee in Conjunction with the Parish Finance Council have determined, due to the lack of volunteer commitment for setting up, running and tear down of the three-day event, that it cannot continue as a Parish fundraiser. The Lawn Fete is one of the largest fundraisers for our Parish, and parishioners must come together to decide how to generate replacement funds. A committee has been established to facilitate ideas and parishioner commitment. Please contact the Parish Office at 724.452.7245 if you would like to offer any suggestions to submit to the committee. Come to the Table of Plenty! Please join us for Breakfast on Sunday, February 16, in Oldenski Hall, from 9:00 am until noon at St. Ferdinand Parish. The cost is $5.00 for adults, $3.00 for children ages 5-12, and children under the age of 5 are free.
