ROTARY WAYS TO BEAT HEAT: Lola Driscoll (left) and Gabriella Driscoll have a cooling out experience in Cranbrook’s Rotary Park, Thursday, July 23.
T R E VO R C R AW L E YQuick action by the
BC Wildfire Service Crews and firefighters from the Jaffray Fire De-partment made a big
difference this after-noon as a light-ning-caused fire 1.5 ki-lometres northwest of Rosen Lake is in mop-up.
The fire has been contained – with 100 per cent of the perime-ter being “wetlined” and fuel free. A five-per-son contract crew was
on site Thursday to continue mopping up hot spots.
At the height of the action, there were seven RDEK firefighters
from Jaffray, a four-per-son BC Wildfire Service Unit Crew, helicopter and air tender on the fire.
The RDEK would like
to acknowledge the work of Fire Chief Dave Boreen and local volun-teer firefighters with the Jaffray and Baynes Lake fire departments. The
volunteer firefighters have been called out many times this sum-mer to work side by side with B.C. Wildfire Ser-vice crews when a fire threatens a community.

“I think, really, it’s be-cause we do have a large di-versity in our area of grant-ing — arts, culture, sports and rec, health, social ser-vices, seniors and the envi-ronment — that are broad-based with a community approach, that is appealing for Telus to support.”

The CDCF provides fund-

Riley Wilcox, Executive Director of the CDCF, said
the campaign was part of Telus’s Community Giving program.

That’s right, the City of Cranbrook has offi-cially put the former firehall on the market after council made the decision to do so earli-er in April.
Retailing for $349,000, the old fire-hall has 6,914 square feet with a second sto-rey, but any new owner will require approval from the city concern-ing use and occupa-tion.

“So a contact from Kelowna got ahold of us and wanted to know if we wanted to be part of that. We thought it would really give us a big
boost in the community, for raising funds but also our profile.”
Wilcox said anytime someone is on Face-book, just go to the
CDCF page, and like the Telus post that’s been shared there.
“They have to like the Telus post,” she added. “People want to partici-pate, they’re going on
and they see our post and like it, but we really need them to click di-rectly on that Telus post, and like that Telus post, for us to receive the five dollars.
“Every like generates five dollars, to a maxi-mum of $5,000. So our goal is 1,000 likes for that post. We’ve got until Fri-day (July 31) to get that done.
“If people could like and share, that’s even better, and get that out to their contacts.”
Wilcox stressed that this doesn’t mean that later on the Community
Foundation will go back and solicit more dona-tions. “We won’t be doing that. It’s not a means for us to go back to the community and solicit more funds later on. Really, it’s Telus that’s making the contri-bution.
The Cranbrook and District Community Foundation — a mem-ber of the national orga-nization Community Foundations of Canada — was founded in 2004, and has given more than $368,000 to the commu-nity since then. In 2015 over $35,000 will be re-ceived by non-profit or-ganizations serving the community. And Wilcox says there are ongoing developments in the works.
“We’re working to de-velop a community fund for Fernie,” she said. “Na-tionally, the movement wants to see every that community in the coun-try either has access to a community foundation or has a community foundation by 2017.
“Our work over the spring and summer is to develop a fund for Fern-ie, so Fernie can have access to some of the great benefits that Cran-brook gets.
“We just had our AGM, and we have new board members coming on in the fall. And we’ve been doing a lot of out-reach with the financial community so we can be one of the options they can propose to their clients, maybe around wills and estates plan-ning. We have a compre-hensive piece of infor-mation on how people can do that.”

TRE VOR CR AWLEYResource extraction
and liquid natural gas (LNG) dominated dis-cussions between in-dustry groups and Can-ada’s provincial mining ministers at a confer-ence in Halifax this past weekend.
Kootenay-East MLA Bill Bennett, the B.C. Minister of Energy and Mines, joined his pro-vincial counterparts, along with Federal and industry representatives at the annual Energy and Mines Ministers’ Conference to network and address common issues.
Bennett noted that his fellow ministers were very interested in learning about B.C.’s LNG projects as well as B.C. Hydro’s generation of electricity through conservation programs.
In terms of LNG, Bennett said there was lots of interested in de-veloping the industry on the East Coast and refer-enced the province’s agreement with Petro-nas, which was recently approved by the legisla-ture.
“Nova Scotia is work-ing on two, and New Brunswick is working on one,” said Bennett. “I have to tell you, they were enthusiastically congratulatory to British Columbia for signing this deal with Petronas.
“It’s not a final deal until the Federal Gov-ernment provides an environmental certifi-cate, but we now have the agreement in place, it is legislated in place, we have the final invest-ment decision from the company, we have our final tax structure in place.”
Bennett noted the LNG deal will be a $35-40 billion investment for B.C.
“For them to hear about a $40 billion proj-ect and the prospect of even others and more projects like that, it blows them away and I hope that British Co-lumbians realize how fortunate we are to have that much natural gas, to be here on the West Coast and I hope they understand that we’re doing everything we can to exploit that opportu-nity.”
The fallout from the
Mount Polley acci-dent—the disaster where the tailings pond burst, sending millions of gallons of tailings pond sludge into Polley Lake—was also another big component of the conference, Bennett added.
“I presented an ex-tensive presentation to all the ministers about the independent panel and what it discovered in terms of the Mount Polley accident and what the province is doing to change our
policies and regulations going forward,” Bennett said.
“There is a lot of pressure on a lot of the mines’ ministers across the country to learn from what happened in B.C., so that played a pretty big part in our discussions around mining.”
Common issues fac-ing ministers across in-ter-provincial boundar-ies seem to relate to public confidence in the industry, said Bennett.
“Everyone was chal-
lenged to help the pub-lic understand the need for resource extraction and to understand from a scientific standpoint how resources can be extracted safely and in an environmentally re-sponsible way,” he said, noting that public confi-dence also extended to developing pipelines and developing LNG in Quebec and the Mari-time provinces.
Access to venture capital by junior explo-ration companies was also another issue that
was raised by Bennett himself.
“While it’s true that low commodity prices are driving down the in-terest and opportunity around grassroots min-ing activity, it’s also true that even if you want to go out and explore and if you think you have something worth inves-tigating, it is harder than it’s ever been before to raise that high-risk in-vestment,” Bennett said.
He gave the example that if a junior explora-tion company raises $3
million in venture capi-tal, $500,000 of that goes to legal fees.
If junior exploration companies don’t have the capital for resource exploration and devel-opment, that eventually has a detrimental effect on the economy, he continued.
“A decade or two down the line, you don’t have any of these junior projects that can be de-veloped over the next decade into a mine and that’s what I’m con-cerned about, that’s
Bennett talks mining at conferencewhat the Prospectors and Developers Associ-ation is concerned about,” Bennett said.
Leading up to the conference, three prior-ities were identified by industry groups in a joint statement from the Canadian Mineral In-dustry Federation, the Mining Association of Canada and the Pros-pectors and Developers Association of Canada.
The groups wanted the ministers to address challenges in a new reg-ulatory regime and clar-ify duty to consult, ad-dress the higher costs of operating in remote and northern Canada, and help junior companies access more capital.
“Despite the current downturn, the industry continues to make enor-mous contributions to the social and economic well-being of Canadi-ans,” said Pierre Grat-ton, the president and CEO of the MAC. “How-ever, these contribu-tions cannot be taken for granted.
“Working in partner-ship with industry, gov-ernments can take con-crete steps now to posi-tion the sector for future success so that, togeth-er, we can seize growth opportunities at the ear-liest signs of the next up-turn.”

The decision by the city to sell the building caused a backlash as the Cranbrook and Dis-trict Arts Council had hoped to use the space for as a cultural hub.
In a presentation to city council in March, CDAC president Sio-ban Staplin said the or-ganization had a plan to turn the firehall into an arts and culture cen-
tre with educational fa-cilities and a gallery.
The decision to sell the building was made in-camera at a council meeting at the end of April.
“It was a tough deci-sion made, and we feel it was the right decision made for the majority of the citizens of Cran-brook,” said Cranbrook Mayor Lee Pratt, at the time.
In 1929, the two-sto-rey Fire Hall was con-structed at 11 Ave. & 1 St. South. A.E. Jones tendered and built the Fire Hall at a cost of $12,144, with Patmore Bros. installing plumb-ing at $498 and A. Leb-eau installing heating at $2,645. The building was in use until 2014.

CANADIAN PRESSOSOYOOS, B.C. - Could you
take a three-minute shower? The mayor of a desert town in
British Columbia says people across the province need to de-velop a different mindset over water use in the face of current drought-like conditions.
Osoyoos Mayor Sue McKor-toff says she’s been watching the
situation in BC where cities and municipalities have enacted strict rules on water use because to dropping reservoir levels.
She says while the media is getting the message out to resi-dents on how to cut back, people must still develop a different mindset and become aware of what they’re actually using.
McKortoff - who often takes a
three-minute shower - says peo-ple need to pay attention to how much water it takes to flush toi-lets, wash clothes, run dishwash-ers and brush teeth.
Osoyoos, 445 kilometres west of Cranbrook, is surrounded by the south Okanagan’s Great-Ba-sin Desert with orchards, vine-yards, and home to western rat-tlesnakes and wind scorpions.

Time marches on and things change. Back in the old days peo-ple used to keep history journals, newspaper articles and paper photographs. Lodge members would show up to the monthly dinner meeting all dressed up and decked out, it’s a lot more casual now. Yesterday someone dropped o a men’s dress set of Elks jewelry, a ring, cu inks and a bolo tie and clip. ey appear to be very old and it got me to thinking about the history and the longevity of the Elks. e Kimberley Elks received its charter in 1925 and have been at this location since 1951. ey purchased the bowling alley lanes in 1949 for a cost of $6,400.00 and membership dues were $10.00 per year. Many years past some-one kept a detailed journal of meetings and I was surprised at
some of the de-tails. For exam-ple in 1953 the R.C.M.P. led 22 complaints against the club for infractions
against the Liquor Act and ned the club $1000.00!!!! Consider that in 1965 a tin of salmon cost $.59 two boxes of corn akes $.79 and in 1966 High top runners cost $1.99 and the Daily Bulletin for
$5.00 a year. e bar purchased a liquor dispensing system in 1962 for $235.20. I would bet it is still the one we use today. New coolers were installed at the bar in 1971 and are in need of some
new weather stripping. We strive to keep our pric-
es less than the bars and have stripped the bar of the old smelly carpet and décor. e bowling alley has been upgraded and is available for your party and league starts in the fall. Ask your dad or your uncle and they will probably tell you about their rst job as a pinsetter. Hall rental in 1974 cost $50.00 and today is only $300.00 even less for members. Countless weddings, celebrations of life and reunions have been held here over the years and this year is no exception. We have a grad reunion Fri. night and the hall is hosting an all age’s dance on Sat. with three live bands, e Party on High Street, e Bison Brothers & Strangers; $10.00 cover charge at the door.

Another fire in the Ward Creek area has grown to 110 hectares since being discovered on July 21.
Located roughly 30 kilometres west of New-gate, the fire is expected to be completely ma-chine-guarded by mid-day Thursday. There is a helicopter doing some bucketing, while 45 personnel are en route, according to Kar-lie Shaughnessy, a fire information officer with the Southeast FIre Cen-tre.
“The fire danger rat-ing in that area is ex-treme in that area,” Shaughnessy said. “The fire grew real quickly due to strong winds in the area and also be-cause of the dry fuels.”
All campfire and open fire bans remain in effect.

A r n e P e t rys h e nJulyFest wrapped up
this past weekend and organizers said the event was a success.
Mike Guarnery, from the Kimberley and District Chamber of Commerce, said the city was packed with festival-goers over the weekend.
“We had wonderful attendance, the partic-ipants at the bocce ap-peared to have a won-derful time,” Guarnery said. “The volunteers from Kimberley and Cranbrook were in-credibly helpful and completely invaluable in getting all the tasks done that we needed. The musicians that came and played were fantastic.”
There were about 75 volunteers that worked on the bocce pit, pa-rade and arena.
“The parade was wonderful,” he said. “When you look at the festivities and you look at the fun they’re hav-ing, and talking to some of the employers, they had really good solid business through-out the weekend too.”
He noted the hard work the volunteers put in, as well as the JulyFest board of direc-tors and JulyFest coor-
dinator Jason Toner. Guarnery also said
that without the sup-port from the City of Kimberley the event would not have run so smoothly.
“It was so valuable and greatly appreciat-ed beyond words. I don’t even know what to say about the city employees; they are fantastic,” he said. “During the event when we needed things moved or forklifted or bobcat, just in getting some details down on the final logistics at the last minute, during the whole event, whatever changes we would have to make to just make things run more streamline. They were incredibly helpful and would work with us.”
Guarnery said the attendance was fantas-tic. He said on the Fri-day there was between 1,500 — 1,800 people through the gates over the course of the day. On Saturday, there was 2,200 though the day.
He said there was about 800 people that attended the concert in the Civic Centre on Saturday night.
He said when com-pared to last year, the bocci pit attendance was similar, but the
concert attendance was lower.
“They didn’t have quite the catalogue that (last year’s per-formers) Big Sugar and Wide Mouth Mason had. We knew that was going to be a very big draw. I was still very pleased and it was a great rock and roll show, from One Bad Son, the Wild, and the Honeymans.”
A debrief is planned for next week, and then planning will begin for next years event.
“We need to take a look at the things that went really well, and take a look at the things that we can do better in how we look at the event as it moves for-ward,” he said.
A water park is planned for the area where the bocce is cur-rently played, so that will be one of the con-siderations taken into account for next year. The Rotary Club is fundraising for the park, so Guarnery said they will have to have discussions to find out what the timeline is.
“First we really need to debrief on this year, then we can make the appropriate plans for next year,” he said. “We’ll be looking at
“It won’t be taken off until we see significant precipitation Cen-
tre-wide,” Shaughnessy added.
The Ward Creek fire
is also generating a lot of smoke which can be visible in the Wardner/
Koocanusa region.Across the SEFC,
there are 70 active fires
burning. Since April 1st, there have been 372 fires, most of which
were lightning caused, however, 49 were hu-man-caused.
community engage-ment at things going forward.”
Guarnery also noted
the great job that orga-nizers did on the soc-cer tournament, 5/10 km run, and the long
boarding. “There are so many
activities going on,” he said. “We saw smiles
on people’s faces and people having fun. That’s what a festival is all about.”

T he Bible is a human book. The heart of what I mean by that is that the Bible is a witness to how two ancient
faith communities understood both God and the world in which they lived. The Old Testament (OT) is the witness of ancient Is-rael; the New Testament (NT) is the witness of the early church.
Furthermore, the writings in the Bible span a time of about 1600 years. They weren’t all written by the same person. The different authors reflect dif-ferently about the nature and character of God and the nature of our life on earth.
Over the course of those 16 centuries, the authors of the Bible spoke about the character of God in many different ways. Even so, I think it is possible to identify two primary ways of talking about who God is.
The first way of talking about God is to talk about God as a holy God. The word “holy” means set apart or separate.
A good example is the story in Exodus 3 about Moses seeing the burning bush which was not being consumed. Out of that bush, a voice speaks to Moses, “Take off your shoes for you are standing on holy ground.” There is something about this small piece of land that is made holy, made sacred by the presence of God. This spot has been set apart from the land all around. It is ordinary, but this small tract is sacred, set apart.
And that’s what this concept of holiness does. It draws boundaries. It marks one part of life as being somehow sacred, and the rest of it as profane.
Over and over again in the Bible, we read, “You shall be holy, for I the Lord your God am holy.” Or again, in the Lord’s Prayer, “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.” The word hallowed means to keep God’s name holy.
One of the 20th century’s pre–eminent OT scholars, Walter Brueggemann, re-minds us that the story of Israel tells us over and over again that we cannot take God for granted. That’s at the heart of what
it means that God is holy. We cannot draw too close to God, or presume too much about God.
The third commandment points to the same reality. “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain”
is not about mindless cursing. It’s about invoking God’s name to bless our purpos-es. When Ronald Reagan christened a nu-clear submarine “Corpus Christi” (which means Body of Christ) in 1983, he broke this commandment. When people use God to bless their causes, they are breaking this commandment.
Holiness draws sharp lines between the sacred and profane. To be holy is to be pure. Holy people, like their holy God, keep themselves separate from anything unclean. Holiness divides people into “us” and “them”, and we definitely don’t want to be like “them”. So we stay away from any-thing that is impure or unclean. At its ex-treme, it means to withdraw from the world, like the Amish and other such groups. This is how they live out their holi-ness.
But there is another primary way of
speaking about God’s character in the Bible. It talks about God as being compas-sionate.
The one who bests exemplifies this, of course, is Jesus. For Jesus, God’s heart is marked by compassion. God loves the world with a deep and abiding passion. God’s heart overflows with compassion to those who suffer, those who are marginal-ized by the world.
Just as Leviticus calls us to “be holy as God is holy,” so Jesus calls us to “be merci-ful, be compassionate, as your heavenly Father is compassionate.” (Luke 6)
In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus re-minds us that “Blessed are the merciful, blessed are those who are compassionate, for they will be shown mercy, they will be shown compassion.” (Matthew 5)
Now I want to be clear. This is not about finding an angry, holy God in the OT and a loving, compassionate God in the NT. We find both ways of talking about who God is throughout the Bible—a holy God; a com-passionate God.
And whereas holiness draws lines and boundaries, compassion reaches out across those boundaries to break down every kind of wall. Compassion unites us in our common humanity, and our com-mon brokenness. Compassion reaches out to embrace all people in acts of love and justice.
I try to keep both of these images of God together in a kind of healthy tension. But if I have to choose, I will choose a religion of compassion rather than holiness.

W hen her d a u g h t e r called her
late at night and warned her that there might be a couple of felons in the neighbourhood, Molly did what any stout-heart-ed, British born woman would do; she put a kettle on for a cup of tea; tea is the panacea for all ills to the people of the British Isles.
Apparently, accord-ing to a radio news item, a man and a woman had stolen a vehicle and were in the neighbour-hood and were on the ‘lam’; they’d be looking for a place out in the country for somewhere to ‘hole up.’
Molly did check to
see if her husband were safe and snug upstairs and sound asleep and she assured herself that the two dogs were com-fortable in the corner after their long half hour walk. She felt that she should lock the doors of the house, something she seldom did, but she wasn’t able find the house keys anywhere. She did try to recall if the keys were in their respective vehi-cles and wondered if she might go outside and check, but it was already dark and she was sure the dogs would get all excited, bark and possibly awaken her husband.
Molly is a resolute
woman; she hails from the far north of England, Yorkshire and stands no nonsense from anyone; her husband calls her ‘My Moll’ but she and her husband have no guns in the house so, not panicking, she did what she reasoned was the next best thing. She
For eight years, Jim Cameron’s col-umn “Janus: Cranbrook Then and Now,” has been a significant contribu-tion to these pages, giving Cranbrook and East Kootenay residents an in-depth look into all aspects of our co-lourful history.

sneaked upstairs, tip-toed past her sleeping mate and dug out her bow, a quiver and a handful of arrows. Be-fore she had wed, she had been a toxophilist, not just an archer but a devotee to the sport.
Now, although Molly had been a devotee to the sport of archery, she had never shot an arrow in the direction of any living thing, so as she lovingly straightened the feathers of her ar-rows, she pondered what she intended to do should those two felons roll up and ‘rattle her chain’. The sight of her in her Boudicca, Queen of the Iceni, poise with her bow and arrows at the ready, she thought, might at least deter the invaders, give them pause for thought.
There is some an-cient tale that I ought to remember and it in-volves bows and arrows, small boys and apples. Wasn’t it William Tell, over there in Switzer-land, who daringly used a bow and arrow in order to shoot an apple off his young son’s head and therefore proved gravity and went run-ning down the street naked crying ‘eureka’? Or was that Fig Newton? I get them muddled up.
Anyway, our Moll, in her hey-day, might have been able to shoot an arrow off her son’s head but she certainly would have been hesitant in
case there might be a worm in the apple and she’d hurt it, and Molly could never hurt a fly. In fact, insects, birds, small creepy creatures, other folk’s pets and wildlife in general line up to be pampered by the lady, so I am positive she wouldn’t have fired off a salvo of arrows at human beings, even if they were ‘on the lam’, desperate and danger-ous. If they had turned up, she would have probably put on yet an-other pot of tea.
Her husband, Roger, always reckoned that his wife tended to go off at tangents at times but being extremely fond of her, sometimes called her his mollycoddler. But he was unconscious at the time and unaware of his spouse’s worries.
Molly, eschewing another re-run of her fa-vourite ‘soap’, had turned off the TV and so she waited in the dark. In the corner of the liv-ing room one of the dogs was having night-mares. Molly strung the bow with difficulty. Ten-tatively, she pulled back on the string and didn’t have much luck. Cer-tain muscles had atro-phied over the years or the bow had stiffened; it was hard to tell.
Our Yorkshire lass fell asleep on the sofa, the bow clutched in her hand. No arrow-pierced corpses were found in the morning.

Cranbrook native helps B.C. U-16 squad to victory at Victoria Elite Youth Sevens Rugby tourney

Cranbrook’s Conor Sinclair, carrying the ball, breaks a tackle during B.C. Rugby Provincial Championships action in the Lower Mainland earlier this summer. Sinclair and his B.C. U-16 squad won the U-18 open division at the Victoria Elite Youth Sevens Rugby Tournament on July 11.

Cranbrook’s Conor Sinclair continues to have an impact in the world of B.C. sevens rugby.
Sinclair, a student at Mount Baker Secondary School, has been suiting up for B.C. Rugby’s U-16 sevens rugby squad since the fall of 2014 and on July 10 and 11, he helped the outfit claim the U-18 open title at the Victoria Elite Youth Sev-ens Tournament.
Sinclair and the U-16 squad went undefeated at the tournament, cul-minating with a 20-15 victory over Alberta’s
Celtic Barbarians in the championship finale.
Leading up to the fi-nale, Sinclair and Team B.C. knocked off a South Vancouver rep team 19-5 before working past the Utah Lions 27-17. They then ran past the Vancouver Island Thunder by a 22-5 final before edging the Utah Cannibals 21-17.
Despite facing com-petition up to two years older than them, the B.C. U-16 squad more than held its own in claiming the tourna-ment title.
The decision to play in the U-18 open divi-sion was made by the
team’s coaches, as they felt the unit would dom-inate the U-16 division. After claiming the U-18 open championship, the decision to play an age group up proved the right one for the devel-opment of Sinclair and his U-16 mates.
Rugby sevens is a variant of rugby union in which teams are comprised of seven players to a side, as op-posed to the typical 15 players a side.
Rugby sevens has been recognized as an Olympic sport and will debut at the 2016 Sum-mer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

TORONTO - The To-ronto Maple Leafs pulled off the stunner of the NHL off-season, hiring Lou Lamoriello as their new general manager.
Lamoriello spent 27 seasons as GM of the New Jersey Devils before stepping down in May.
The 72-year-old Hockey Hall of Famer has three Stanley Cups on his resume, and the Devils made the final in 2012. But New Jersey missed the playoffs the past three years, leading to Ray Shero replacing Lamoriello as GM.
Toronto had been without a GM since president Brendan Sha-
nahan fired Dave Nonis after the Leafs missed the playoffs for the sec-ond straight year.
Shanahan left open the possibility of GM by committee with himself, Kyle Dubas, Mark Hunt-er and Brandon Pridham all having a say.
In Lamoriello, the Leafs get veteran experi-ence and someone who has relationships around the league that could benefit in trade talks.
Already this summer the Leafs traded star winger Phil Kessel to the Pittsburgh Penguins, a move they made with-out a GM in place.
Lamoriello’s hiring is the latest piece of an or-ganizational makeover.
Toronto hired Mike Babcock as coach on an eight-year contract.
New Jersey made the playoffs 21 times under Lamoriello.
“I have worked with Hall-of-Fame coaches, and players and a great staff, all of whom con-tributed to our success,” Lamoriello said in a statement released by the Devils. “In the end, it’s about the people which makes this deci-sion so difficult.”
The Devils said only that Lamoriello had re-signed to pursue other job opportunities. That job was working for Sha-nahan, whom he draft-ed in 1987, his first year with New Jersey.

GLENDALE, Ariz. - The Arizona Coyotes and the city of Glendale agreed to amend an ex-isting lease agreement on Thursday, though the deal may only be a temporary fix in the team’s ongoing saga to remain in the desert.
The amended deal, which will be voted on by the Glendale City Council on Friday, calls for the original 15-year, $225 million agreement to be cut to two years, expiring June 30, 2017.
It also would trim the management fee the city pays annually to the Coyotes from $15 mil-lion to $6.5 million and shift all hockey-related revenue to the team in-stead of Glendale, which would generate approx-imately $6 million for the Coyotes. A five-year out clause if the team lost more than $50 mil-lion that was part of the original agreement also has been removed.
“This decision will bring much-needed certainty to our fans and sponsors about our near-term future and an
end to the uncertainty brought about through this legal action,” Coy-otes co-owner and CEO Anthony LeBlanc said in a statement. “We know that hockey works in the Valley and we are com-mitted to Arizona for the long-term.”
The lease agreement was signed in 2013, not long after IceArizona purchased the team from the NHL.
The City Council voted June 10 to termi-nate the agreement with the Coyotes, citing a conflict-of-interest law involving two Glendale
employees who later went on to work for the Coyotes.
A judge granted the Coyotes’ request for a temporary restraining order two days later. A judge also ordered the city to make a sched-uled $3.75 million pay-ment to the team on June 29 and the Coyotes to increase their bond payment to Glendale by $750,000 to $1 million.
If passed, the amend-ed arena lease agree-ment will keep the Coy-otes in Gila River Arena for the next two seasons, but will likely further re-
location speculation that has swirled around the team for the past six years.
“This revised agree-ment represents a posi-tive outcome for both the city and the Coy-otes,” Glendale acting city manager Dick Bow-ers said in a statement. “It also allows us to move forward in a way that keeps an important economic driver in our community. That’s im-portant for business and it’s important to our citi-zens.”
The Coyotes have faced an uncertain fu-
ture since former owner Jerry Moyes took the team into bankruptcy in 2009. The team was op-erated by the NHL for four seasons before IceArizona, headed by LeBlanc and George Gosbee, purchased the team and reached an arena management deal with Glendale.
IceArizona sold a 51 per cent stake in the team to Philadelphia hedge fund manager Andrew Barroway last year, a move designed to strengthen the team’s fi-nancial footing.
Glendale’s City
Council put the Coy-otes’ future in doubt again with its vote to dissolve the lease agree-ment last month. The council cited an Arizona statute that allows a gov-ernment entity to end an agreement if a per-son who worked on the deal later represents the other party. Former city attorney Craig Tindall is now the Coyotes gener-al counsel and former Glendale communica-tions director Julie Frisoni did consulting work for the team after leaving the city.

ARIES (March 21-April 19) A loved one will demonstrate his or her caring in a big way. You might want to clear the way to do something very different, but you also must remain sen-sitive to this person. Remember to express compassion, and lis-ten to his or her ideas. Tonight: In the whirlwind of life. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Stay responsive to others, as they seem to want to be domi-nant right now. Pressure builds and could force your hand. Clearly, you need to communi-cate better. Understand what your expectations are from oth-ers. Make sure they understand yours as well. Tonight: Defer. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Playing catch up might not be fun, but it will be necessary. In your recent jubilant mood, you’ll discover how carefree you can be. However, be sure not to let your responsibilities fall to the wayside. Worry less about your plans and more about your to-do list. Tonight: Join friends.
CANCER (June 21-July 22) You could be at your wits’ end and might feel as if you need a break. You will find that you are able to flow through different issues and responsibilities. As a result, you’ll free yourself to do whatever you want. Make plans for the weekend if you haven’t yet. Tonight: TGIF! LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Get back to the basics when dealing with a personal matter, a relative or even a work-related issue. You know what is best for you. Lighten up, even if there is some tension surrounding you. This too will pass. Tonight: Head home early, but first join a friend for Happy Hour. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Your efforts to reach out to someone will succeed. You might get some flak, but it won’t be enough to deter you from your objective. Expect an unusual tale, and you won’t be surprised when you hear the other side of the story. Be more forthright. Tonight: Make it easy. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)
Be aware of the costs of making certain plans, as not everyone will agree with your choices. You could be worried about a personal matter that is consum-ing your thoughts. Slow down if you can. Think before you leap. Tonight: Make it your treat. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Listen to a friend who seems to have some thoughts and ideas to share. You might be a little out of whack when trying to move forward with a personal matter. Your spontaneity could backfire, so be careful. Commu-nication might need some revi-sion. Tonight: The party begins. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You might want to rethink a personal matter. You could be uncomfortable with the out-come if you act too quickly. You are best off not overthinking the issue. Try to move in a new direction if possible. Make sure a plan is well-thought-out. To-night: In the thick of things. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Focus on your goals right now. Zero in on what is important, and figure out what needs to
happen. A long-term desire could possibly manifest and be-come a reality. Touch base with a child or loved one. You have reason for celebration. Tonight: Pop a bottle of bubbly. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Pressure builds and forces you to take charge. You will have lit-tle choice, as everyone seems to be looking to you. Demonstrate your sensitivity with various issues. Your empathy will help draw others toward you. Un-derstand your limits. Tonight: A must appearance. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) The more you detach, the more likely it will be that a wonder-ful meeting of the minds is the outcome. Don’t underestimate the people around you. How you view an important mat-ter is subject to change after some important conversations. Tonight: Make sure music sur-rounds you. BORN TODAY Singer Jennifer Lopez (1969), aviator Amelia Earhart (1897), actress Lynda Carter (1951) ***
Dear Annie: I am 62 years old and have been married to “Clyde” for 12 years. We do not have a sexual relationship. He prefers to sleep on the sofa and always has, saying it’s more comfortable. Clyde had a horrible childhood. He told me that his mother had sex with various men in his presence. On the weekends, he would stay with his paternal grandparents, where he witnessed his uncle abusing his aunt. His grandmother is the only one who showed him any love, and while there, he slept on the sofa. Prior to meeting my husband, I contracted herpes. I am allergic to latex so sex is always a risk. He knew this prior to our marriage and things were OK then. But after we married, sex became infrequent, partly due to his erectile dysfunction. He informed me that I was no longer attractive to him because I had gained weight (so has he) and he fears getting herpes. I don’t know what to do. Clyde is moody and I sometimes feel that I’m walking on eggshells. He can acknowledge that he is difficult, but he doesn’t change. We love each other and share a fairly comfortable life, but I miss an intimate relationship. Clyde will not go to counseling. In fact, he dislikes speaking of our problems in the bedroom and becomes so angry that I once put my feelings in a letter. He tore it up without reading it. Any advice? -- Missing My Husband Dear Missing: Clyde’s background indicates a lot of unresolved issues about sex and intimacy, but if he refuses to address them, there is little you can do to change how he responds. However, you can get counseling for yourself. A good counselor will help you focus on what’s important to you and decide what is best for you, including ways to cope with the situation you have with less frustration. Dear Annie: “Good Daughter” said her mother endlessly stole the limelight. I’ve observed the exact same behavior in both my husband’s mother and mine, and it seems to have started in their 70s. I wondered if it had to do with them fighting the feeling of being invisible or irrelevant in their families’ lives. As I transition into the empty-nest phase of life, I’m beginning to get a glimpse of what it feels like to go from being the center (and coordinator) of all family activities into a much less active role in my kids’ lives, and I’m sure it will be even more pronounced over time. We all need to feel needed. In our younger years, we race through our busy lives. Once we reach our senior years, all of these connections and obligations fade. We need others to validate that we still matter. While this doesn’t make it any more pleasant to observe the redirection of every conversation, a little perspective might encourage more tolerance. -- Patient Daughter Dear Patient: While we aren’t sure that applies to all cases (many people are self-absorbed from childhood on), we agree that the sense that one is invisible and unimportant can push people to assert themselves this way. Thank you for providing a plea for understanding. Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column. Marcia DunnAssociated Press
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — Scientists have identified a “close cous-in” to Earth that’s orbit-ing a sun-like star and might harbour life.
The researchers an-nounced their discovery Thursday based on ob-servations from NASA’s Kepler space telescope.
“It is the closest thing that we have to another place that somebody
else might call home,” said Jon Jenkins, the lead data analyst from NASA’s Ames Research Center in California.
This older, bigger cousin to Earth is called Kepler-452b. What makes this planet re-markable is that it orbits its star at about the same distance that Earth or-bits the sun. What’s more, its home star looks to be similar to our sun.
Based on what scien-tists know today, Jen-kins added, “This is the closest thing we have to another Earth-sun twin system.”
John Grunsfeld, NA-SA’s science mission chief, said the exoplanet system “as far as we can tell, is a pretty good close cousin to the Earth and our sun.” The planet itself is “the closest twin, so to speak, to Earth 2.0” yet found in the Kepler data.
“This is about the closest so far,” Grunsfeld said, “and I really em-phasize the ‘so far.’ ”
One unanswered question is whether the planet is rocky. Scien-tists believe there’s a better than even chance it is. As for age and size, the planet is about 6 bil-lion years old, 1.5 billion years older than Earth, and 60 per cent larger in diameter than our home planet. Its star, Kepler 452, is also older and bigger, as well as bright-er than our sun.
Planet 452b takes 385 days to orbit its star, just a little more than Earth takes for a one-year lap. It’s just a bit farther from
its star than Earth is from our sun.
The planet is in a solar system that is 1,400 light years from our own, located in the Con-stellation Cygnus, or swan.
“So pack your bags, it’s a long trip,” joked Jenkins.
Planet 452b is among more than 500 new en-tries listed in the Kepler team’s latest catalogue of exoplanet candidates released Thursday. Ke-pler was launched in 2009 to hunt for exo-planets - worlds beyond our solar system.
Of those 500-plus new potential planets, 12 are less than twice Earth’s diameter and also orbiting in the so-called habitable zone of their star, also known as the just-right Goldilocks zone.
Kepler 452b is the first of those 12 to be confirmed as a true planet, thanks to ground observations.
Altogether, the cata-logue now includes 4,661 exoplanet candi-dates. Slightly more than 1,000 of them are confirmed to be planets.
Scientists find closest thing yet to Earth-sun twin systemEarth’s ‘close cousin’ best bet for possible life, scientists say

c anaDian PressFederal Liberal Lead-
er Justin Trudeau is re-jecting any idea of a for-mal coalition with the NDP.
Trudeau says he doesn’t believe in re-ducing the options vot-ers have at the ballot box.
He also says there are very big differences be-tween NDP and Liberal policies - on everything from child care to in-come-tax reform to the
rules for possible Que-bec separatism.
One New Democrat MP, Nathan Cullen, has said the NDP would look to form a coalition with the Liberals if it were the only way to oust the Harper Conser-vatives from power.
Trudeau says he is open to co-operating with other parties, if need be, on key legisla-tion, but any formal co-alition is out of the ques-tion.
Liberal Leader says no to coalition idea with NDP
c anaDian PressToronto councillor
Norm Kelly has ended up in a Twitter feud with Philadelphia rapper Meek Mill after coming to the defence of Toron-to musician Drake.
It started when Mill sent a Twitter salvo aimed at Drake on Tues-day night after the VMA nominations were an-nounced.
“Stop comparing drake to me .... He don’t write his own raps! That’s why he ain’t tweet my album because we found out!,” Mill tweet-ed.
Drake has yet to re-spond, but his support-ers took to Twitter. A tweet from Kelly’s ac-ccount was particularly indignant.
“You’re no longer
welcome in Toronto, @MeekMill,” read the mis-sive. Kelly, 73, was once the city’s deputy mayor.
Mill wasn’t about to let that response go un-challenged.
“Aye white man @norm what gives you the audacity to tell me I can’t come somewhere over me voicing my opinion! U sound like a thug lol,” he fired back.
Kelly returned the volley, and backed down on his suggestion that Mill stay away.
“Aye American @MeekMill. Didn’t say don’t come. Just puz-zled why you’d diss a Canadian hero a week before coming to his city.”
Mill has a concert scheduled in Toronto on Tuesday.
