DEAR FRIEND

The Lord allowed CRASH Japan in 2013 to continue bringing help and hope to survivors of the 2011 tsunami. Our hearts rejoiced as churches that were swept away by the tsunami began rebuilding, and survivors whose lives were torn apart by the disaster experienced the healing power of Jesus Christ; long-lasting fruit of the love and service that was poured out in the name of Jesus Christ by thousands of volunteers over the last three years.

Our mission has been to equip local churches to minister to their communities

and continue that care into the long recovery. Listening to pastors, what they need most is help. Last year CRASH was able to support full-time staff to work with the churches in Tohoku in their efforts.

One effective tool for local churches is OperationSAFE, a child trauma intervention that cares for the emotional and spiritual needs of children. Last year we held follow-up camps and events in Tohoku and in neighboring countries, including Indonesia and the Philippines where thousands of children are now being helped.

This Ministry Report highlights these projects and other ways that God has brought opportunities to prepare His church to bring the gospel to those who have not yet heard in both word and deed. “For a great and effective door has been opened…” 1 Corinthians 16:9

ver 200,000 people are still living in temporary housing in Tohoku, mostly the elderly who have very few other options. In Fukushima where the nuclear reactor is still leaking radioactive water, children are living under the spectre of fallout and parents are fearful of allowing them to play

outside. Broken people trying to rebuild their own lives struggle to help their communities recover from the disaster as well.

OThanks to your donations, our staff and volunteers been able to join local churches in Tohoku as they visit the temporary housing units. In Minami Soma, a part of Fukushima that was mostly cut off from relief efforts because of the radiation, pastors of the local churches have taken on visiting the elderly evacuees as part of their ministry. Gospel concerts, Christmas parties and gifts brought by CRASH workers have encouraged not only the survivors but also the local ministers not to grow weary while doing good.

The Fukushima Hope Project was started by a group of churches to take children out of the radiation zone so that they could play freely outdoors. However, they soon realised that the task required more help. CRASH was able to

provide full-time workers to organise trips and care for the children.

Many volunteer teams remember the farm at Wakabayashi, where the tsunami came up to the second floor of the house and filled the fields with sludge and debris. Not only are the fields now clean and producing vegetables for markets in Sendai, but there has been fruit for the gospel in the family that owns the farm. A local pastor steadfastly met weekly with Mrs. O, the octogenarian woman who was raised there, and recently prayed with her to receive salvation in the Lord Jesus Christ. Her son now attributes the amazing recovery of the farm to the power of prayer, which he heard the volunteers offer to God for his farm at the end of each work day.

OPSAFE TRAUMA CAMP - BALANGKAYAN, PHILIPPINES

esearch has shown that childhood trauma leaves children at risk for a host of social, neuropsychological and medical problems such as PTSD, school drop-out, teen-age pregnancy, adolescent drug-use and anti-social behaviour. However, even in Japan there are very few trained counselors to

help children after disaster, as few as one per 10,000 children. In other parts of Asia resources to help children recover are scarcer yet.

ROperationSAFE trains local Christian volunteers in emotional first-aid (crisis intervention) that addresses the immediate psycho-social needs of children once they have been rescued and brought to safety. These volunteers are not therapists or trauma counselors, but like those taught life-saving by the Red Cross around the world they can make the difference between life and death for a child struggling in the aftermath of trauma. OperationSAFE camps raise the level of resilience not just for the children but for the whole community as volunteers learn emotional care-giving skills both for the children and for themselves.

Last year, CRASH held OperationSAFE follow-up events at Christmas and Easter in Tohoku. Mrs. Naito of Seaside Bible

Church wrote, “I would like to ask your prayers that the seeds that the OpSAFE team planted will grow in the kids’ hearts and fruit will come from them.”

Two days after training children’s ministry workers in the Philippines in OperationSAFE the most powerful storm to hit the Philippines in recorded history struck. Thousands of children are being helped on the island of Samar.

In Indonesia refugee children are being held in detention centers, spending their childhood behind bars. We trained Christian workers there to bring them hope. A child of Iranian refugees, who experienced violence in their home country, was too afraid to interact. But through the OperationSAFE program they were able to gain his trust.

TORNADO RESPONSE - KOSHIGAYA

apan’s 127,000,000 residents are exposed to frequent natural disasters with earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanoes, typhoons and as an island archipelago, new vulnerabilities to climate change. Since the 2011 tsunami the church in Japan has stepped up to the task of responding to disasters and yet there are many

challenges. In 2013, freak tornados struck near Tokyo, revealing how excellent disaster preparedness in one area (earthquakes) doesn’t guarantee protection.

JWhile our primary focus has been the ongoing recovery efforts in Tohoku, last year CRASH Japan also helped local churches respond to new disasters such as the tornadoes that ripped through the Tokyo suburb of Koshigaya and the mudslide following a typhoon that enveloped a village on the offshore island of Izu-Oshima.

CRASH also prepared churches for large disasters in the future by promoting chaplaincy training and the development of Local Area Networks (LAN’s) to unite churches in response across denominational lines. Partnering with the Japan Evangelical Association and the Salvation Army we are working together to equip the church to effectively care for their communities.

Most disasters in Japan are small and do not garner international attention like the tsunami of 2011. But with the help of CRASH, local churches were able to give assistance to their neighbors. After volunteers helped repair a window that was damaged by a tornado in Koshigaya, the grateful homeowner was surprised to hear that they were from a church in her neighborhood. She didn’t even know that there was a church nearby and was so touched that she decided to visit. When a mudslide crashed through homes on Izu-Oshima, the Holiness churches opened their campground on the island to Christian volunteers.
