Conservation Expo & Fundraiser
The Crawford-Roscommon Conservation District
joined the Farm Market at the AuSable River Center in
Roscommon for their Annual Conservation Expo on
Sept. 28th.
This is a great local partnership. People stopping by
can pick up their tree seedlings they had previously
ordered, purchase Michigan books, obtain
environmental information while discussing their
property with the technical staff, shop at the farm
market, purchase raffle tickets to take home a prize and
winning amateur photos were chosen by the public.
The Historical Train Club was providing train rides for
families & the museum was open.
Attendees had their chance to purchase raffle tickets in
hopes of winning one of the 50 prizes that were so
graciously donated by directors, friends, family,
Tractor Supply and the conservation district; among
them were a pickup truck load of firewood, some
antique lumbermen tools, bird houses & feeders,
baskets of home-made and/or home grown items,
books, framed art, golf gift certificates, electric ice
cream maker, gardening supplies, planters, maple
syrup, honey, tree seedlings & a hand-crocheted rug. A
50/50 raffle was also held; and each visitor could take
home a tree seedling.
Stop in next year!

Forestry Assistance Program
Tabitha O’Dell - District Forester
Hello Conservation Friends and Neighbors! 2019 has been another rousing year for the local Forestry
Assistance Program. The year started off with a bang, attending conferences, expos, and speaking to local
organizations and schools. As spring rolled into summer, I hosted many recurring workshops including Fruit
Tree Care and Tree Selection & Planting and some new topics like Edible Landscapes.
Big changes in 2019 include the removal of the maximum
acreage cap to enroll in the Qualified Forest Program (QFP).
Previously limited to 640 acres, landowners can now enroll any
number of acres over the 20 acre minimum. This program gives tax
exemptions to properties in return for sustainable management of their
forests. QFP allows larger tracts of land to remain unfragmented,
undeveloped, and able to provide our landscape with healthier forests,
habitats, and water.
I met with many landowners over the past year that shared the stories of their land and allowed me to
help them in reaching their goals for the future. Wildlife habitat has been the greatest interest among forestland
owners, followed by forest health, and forest/timber management. These are topics that I address during every
free site visit, explaining how they all work together to create a healthy, productive forest. I make sure
landowners are aware of programs they may be eligible for. Tax exemptions, cost-shares, and recognition
programs help landowners get forest management plans, start conservation projects, and improve their forest.
2019 Accomplishments
86 Landowner Site Visits
6,216 acres Assisted in Forest & Wildlife
Management
2822 acres Enrolled in Qualified Forest Program
2887 acres Referred to the Private Sector
Over $75,000 Generated in Local Revenue
22 Educational/Outreach Events
One of the program’s greatest accomplishments of 2019 was the Northern Michigan Forestry & Wildlife
Habitat Expo hosted by NRCS, MSU Extension, and the Forestry Assistance Program. This successful event
gave attendees the opportunity to learn how forestry practices can create and enhance the wildlife habitat and
how they can benefit from the local forest products industry. This event will be back in 2020 with a new round
of notable speakers, topics, and field tours.
If you have any questions regarding the Forestry Assistance Program services or programs, or would
like to schedule a free site visit, contact District Forester Tabitha O’Dell at: (989) 732-4021 or by email at
*Be on the lookout for upcoming workshops and events!*
The Forestry Assistance Program is able to provide free assistance to landowners
thanks to an annual grant through MI Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.
Contact your local legislature to support this program into the future.

Greetings Landowners!
This past year has been a whirlwind! Despite the government shutdown, passage of new Farm Bill legislation and
retirements of several staff members in the region, we’ve still managed to get plenty of conservation on the ground.
Thank you to all the fantastic landowners and partners I had the pleasure of working with this year, you make my job so
rewarding!

USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service The USDA is an equal opportunity employer, provider, and lender.
MAEAP is a FREE, CONFIDENTIAL PROGRAM designed to assist all sizes and types of farms in addressing and mitigating
any potential environmental risks. The program is intended to be delivered to farmers using a 3-step system:
EDUCATION This gives farmers a chance to learn about the program and its benefits before scheduling a
farm visit with their technician.
ON-FARM RISK ASSESSMENT This involves having your local technician out to evaluate your farm’s
management practices. The farm has the opportunity to go through various assessments unique to their
operation, which includes—Farmstead, Cropping, Livestock, Greenhouse, Nursery/Christmas tree and
Forest, Habitat and wetlands Assessment. The technician will give you options on how to improve any
‘high risk’ practices highlighted in an Action Plan and can provide technical assistance for implementing
certain practices.
VERIFICATION If the farmer completes the needed improvements highlighted in their Action Plan, the
producer can become verified and be able to get a MAEAP sign, along with other incentives for
completion.
For more information about this program or to set up your free farm visit, please contact your county technician:
