As I began my first day being the president of Crowley’s Ridge College on January 1 of this year, numerous thoughts were racing through my mind. This was especially true as I drove onto campus on January 2, anticipating my new role and honestly, hardly being able to contain my excitement regarding the opportunity that our board of trustees had graciously given me. The weight of the responsibility seemed to be pressing down quite a bit on my shoulders at

the time. However, I knew with God’s help, along with the strong foundation provided by so many since our founding in 1964, and with the dedicated, committed faculty, staff, friends, alumni, and supporters of the college, through our combined efforts, CRC most certainly would thrive. “ ” is our word of the year at CRC for 2020. It has now been more than three years since I began my doctoral studies in organizational leadership with

an emphasis in higher education. Much of that time, my research has been dedicated to understanding how some small Christian colleges decline, yet others are able to thrive. As I finish the last two chapters of my dissertation, my understanding regarding these areas is becoming much clearer. I hope you will notice some of this clarity in the 2020 Vision for Crowley’s Ridge College. The vast majority of CRC’s 2020 Vision is connected to making certain our internal systems are fully supporting our mission of serving students in this Christian higher educational environment. Our mission is the foundation of why our employees must have absolute clarity of how they are helping change the lives of our students. Our internal structures in every

department must be understood and connected to our mission, which will help CRC thrive, as we execute all the action steps needed to achieve our 2020 Vision. Our newly appointed Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Brian Davis is one of the key reasons that our academic program will thrive. Dr. Davis has an outstanding long term, higher education career. Brian’s roots are connected to CRC, as he recalls growing up at Maynard and how CRC students often filled the pulpit for his home congregation. Brian is already making excellent changes to our degree structures and how we can work with students transferring from other colleges to finish their degree at CRC. Brian is also focused upon helping CRC improve our retention by working with our faculty to improve academic advising both in and out of the classroom. Please read more about Dr. Brian Davis on the next page. Working with experienced higher education professionals such as Dr. Jim Carr will help our admissions and enrollment to thrive. Dr. Carr is a highly experienced and successful higher education consultant, having assisted more than 120 colleges and universities. Dr. Carr retired recently as an Executive Vice President at Harding University and serves as Chairman of the Higher Education Board in

Arkansas. Additionally, Dr. Carr was just appointed to the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom. Jim is consulting with CRC to improve our admissions recruiting strategies, which is also connected to making improvements in other departments. I have known Jim for many years and feel blessed to have him as a mentor and friend. Another area in which CRC will thrive is in the maintenance and building of new facilities. Last year, Craig Cupp, an alumnus of CRC was hired as our Facilities Manager following the retirement of the quite

capable, Lance Johns. Craig has long term experience in facilities management within the banking industry. In addition to Craig’s experience, he is also utilizing structural engineers, roof specialists, and contractors to help understand the extent of CRC’s facilities issues, which stem largely from their age. Our gymnasium roof must be replaced this summer. That cost will be close to $50,000.

Crowley’s Ridge College will continue being a beacon of light that shines brightly throughout this local and multi-state area, nation, and world. CRC’s board of trustees, faculty, and staff are fully committed to this higher education institution being a quality, Christian college. Given how busy and successful Satan is today, CRC’s Christian higher education environment is needed more now than perhaps any other time in history. Crowley’s Ridge College is committed to increasing its

enrollment to 500 students by expanding degree programs, improving student retention, expanding admissions recruiting efforts, providing improved financial aid services, increasing online classes, working with other colleges, universities, and community colleges through articulation agreements and degree completion programs, and by working with high schools in providing concurrent classes. CRC will improve and increase marketing efforts, and will improve current facilities and build new facilities. CRC will extend its outreach in working with churches and the Christian community. Events of interest to all age groups will be hosted on CRC’s campus. CRC will work to partner with corporations and businesses to establish paying internship opportunities for students aimed at decreasing student loan debt. CRC will become a college that is both inwardly focused on how to better serve students’ needs and outwardly focused on how to serve the needs beyond its campus. This updated vision will be further developed within CRC’s new strategic plan, a collaborative process that is already underway.

Additionally, we need to cover the interior gym walls and ceilings and install LED lighting, which will be another $50,000. Our cafeteria roof and Wilson Hall both have roof issues that should be corrected in the near future. Craig is doing an excellent job helping us better understand various issues with facilities, how to plan for them, and in priority order. This article and our 2020 Vision emphasize the importance of CRC’s Christian mission. I am excited to announce that Grayson taylor will become CRC’s first fulltime Campus Minister beginning this summer. We must make every effort to reach our students and help them understand what Jesus did for them and for all of us. Some are from church backgrounds and some are not. The fields are white for the harvest! Grayson and his wife, Amanda, and their young son, Shepherd will be moving in to the currently being renovated “Campus Ministry House” located next to Hillcrest Church of Christ on Hwy 412. Several thousand dollars is needed to correct an outside structural area, install a new wooden fence in the backyard, some interior remodeling, walls, flooring, and to purchase furniture and

other items. The full basement downstairs will be a perfect area for campus ministry. (A name for this exciting new ministry will be announced soon, so keep watching www.crc.edu and https://www.facebook.com/CrowleysRidgeCollege/ for updates). These first few months have also been filled with several donor visits. One visit discussed how to fund a trust that will

provide monthly income to CRC. Another visit was to ask about the price of a needed bus, which was then donated! God is blessing Crowley’s Ridge College and we are grateful. With His blessings and donors willing to give toward expensive infrastructure, facilities, and other needs, and from making changes designed to increase enrollment, I am confident that CRC will thrive. If you are able, please contribute toward these infrastructure, facilities, and program needs. Lastly, I will be telling you more about CRC’s Building a Road to the Future Campaign very soon. Updates will be posted on our website and Facebook page. We are still waiting on some bids to give you an overall total needed and our board of trustees will be giving their input to additions needed to this campaign to help CRC thrive. Please stop by CRC’s campus whenever you have time. I would love to show you around, get to know you better, and hear your thoughts

regarding our 2020 Vision, and how you can make CRC thrive! Thank you for caring about this ministry. Please contact me at 870-236-6901 or [email protected], if I can help you in any way.

Dr. Brian Davis was appointed as CRC’s Vice President for Academic Affairs beginning January 1, 2020. Dr. Davis grew up attending the now closed Washington Church of Christ. He and his family now live in Lafe, Arkansas and attend the Gainesville Church of Christ. His wife, Melissa, is from Fayette County, Tennessee. She attended Harding Academy in Memphis and is an administrator at Three Rivers College in Poplar Bluff, Missouri. They have two children, a daughter, Olivia, and a son, Alexander. Dr. Davis has his B.S. Mathematics from Arkansas State University and his M.S. Mathematics and Ph.D. Mathematics from Ole Miss. He is specialized in applications of generalized compactness. His

most recent research dealt with using topological game theory to establish conditions under which paratopological groups are in fact topological groups. Dr. Davis has served in a variety of faculty and administrative roles in several institutions including the University of Maryland Global Campus, Tusculum University and now Crowley’s Ridge College. He has a long standing interest in academic assessment and is a peer reviewer for the Higher Learning Commission. His hobbies include Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, target shooting, building models and playing tabletop war games. He is the head coach of CRC’s new Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu’s club sport team. (See page 5 for more details about their first

competition.) CRC is so thankful for Dr. Davis and the experience he brings to the role of VPAA. He is a huge asset to the CRC family as we continue to “ ” THR VE!

Joe Chesser, sr. was born in Paragould in 1948 and lived in St. Louis for ten years as a youngster, and moved back to Paragould when he was 14. He attended Crowley’s Ridge Academy & Greene County Tech, graduating from GCT in 1966. He studied at CRC from 1966–68, graduating with an Associate of Arts Degree, and then graduated from Harding University in 1970 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Bible. Joe also did graduate work in Bible at the Harding Graduate School of Religion in Memphis. Near the end of March 1968, on a CRC chorus trip to Dallas, Joe began dating Areva Ward, who was also a student at CRC. Talk about a whirlwind romance! They were married just over four months later on August 3, 1968. They have three children: Joe Chesser, Jr., Andy Chesser, and Jenny Newman. Joey and Andy also attended CRC. Joe and Areva currently have 14 grandchildren … so far!!!

This summer, Joe will complete 50 years of full-time preaching, serving as the minister for 8 congregations in 4 states. He has also served as an Elder in the Crowder Blvd. Church of Christ in New Orleans and the Fruitland Church of Christ in Jackson, MO, where he has been preaching for almost 17 years. Joe has been a guest speaker at lectureships, gospel meetings and other special events, as well as conducting evangelism training, leadership seminars and in serving youth camps. Mission work has been in Joe’s heart for many years. He had the opportunity to do state-side mission work for 12 years in Minnesota and has had numerous occasions to do short-term foreign missions. The Lord has blessed Joe and Areva to serve Him in Kenya, Guyana, Suriname, Guatemala, Cambodia, and Costa Rica. Joe also has not forgotten his time at Crowley’s Ridge College – as you can hear from these words he spoke recently: “I love CRC, and will never cease to thank God for my two years here. CRC provided an incredible foundation for my spiritual growth and development; it provided the opportunity for me to meet my beautiful wife of 52 years; and it provided the inspiration and encouragement to set in motion my life’s work of service to the Lord. Crowley’s Ridge College will always have a special place in my heart. May God continue to bless CRC, its administration, staff, students and supporters.” Thank you Joe, for your outstanding service to the Church, the Community and Christian Education.
