Hello everyone I’m a bit late with this newsletter for which I apologise. It was all very quiet over Christmas and suddenly, as we got to early February, it all started happening at a rate of knots….. We have lots of new members join us recently, so welcome to you all, and we have run a series of events where you have all done so well. The January dressage was cancelled due to the bad weather, the eventer challenge was a huge success , our show jumping including Windsor Qualifiers was a great event (especially for our qualified mem-bers) and the dressage Jayne Meldon ran last weekend was oversubscribed with some non-members unable to compete. And while all this was happening we’ve qualified a team for the Indoor National Novice Jumping Champi-onships and are lining up to send teams out for Festival of the Horse qualifiers amongst others. Back in November we sent dressage competitors to Merrist Wood to participate in the Winter Dressage qualifier with Charlotte Davy and Mylo just missing out on a place at Windsor by a tantalising 0.5%. There are more dressage qualifiers and team events coming up, along with eventer challenge, jumping and horse trials qualifiers so if you want to compete on a team for the club this year please look at the team events section towards the back of the newsletter and please let us know if you are interested. Please note that for the National qualifiers we need

to put pre-entries in at least 3 weeks before the event so earliest responses appreciated to ensure we are allowed to compete. The next one is the Eventer Challenge qualifier at Rogate on 7th April so if this is your thing please let us know as soon as possible—there are junior, senior, novice, intermediate and pairs classes to contest. You will see the membership from at the back of the newsletter—if you have not completed yours and wish to remain a member, please do so and send it to Jayne Meldon as the next newsletter will be sent to only our subscribed members.

See you all soon I hope

Back in October 2012 we held a Show Jumping competition at Felbridge Show-ground with their wonderful new club-house, where we ran classes in two rings. We started in the main Bill Kear Arena with the 75cms minimus. We had 26 com-petitors in this first class with 11 going through into the jump off, 4 of which pro-duced double clears. The fastest of these was in 27.21 seconds ridden by Roselly Hamlett who also came second on her two very fast ponies. Third was member Karen Conran on her new horse CrackerJack and fourth was Stephanie McLean on Mr Manolito. This was followed by the 85cms Novice where over 30 competitors took part in the two-phase class. Ten of these produced a double clears with Annabel Ing on Alfie winning, closely followed by Nicki Devulder on Big Alfie. Our highest placed member was junior Lucy Tomkins on her lovely Dougal who took it steady in the first part of the course and then kicked into racing mode - flying round the pond in true jump-off style. Fourth was non member Heidi Cousins on Take Two with member Tracy Pearce on King Rollo in fifth, giving a lovely performance after a very long wait due to poor Emily and Eric having parted company at the planks resulting in an unplanned break and an ambulance visit. The Pairs Relay is a new class to replace the top score with two CRC teams show-ing the others how it's done: Marie Manning on Oli and Chantelle Evans on Danny took the red rosettes, followed closely by Tracy Pearce on Rollo and Lucy Tomkins on Dougal. Lucy Tomkins on her reliable Dougal returned to the ring in the 95cms Intermedi-ate class to take second place with another CRC junior, Ellie Carlisle on Bouncing Brown in third. More juniors in the rosettes in the final two classes—the 1m Open and then the Grand Prix saw Becca Stannard on Topper (pictured right) taking second place in both classes—well done Becca. The second ring started with clear round during the morning and was then fol-lowed by the Cross Pole Jumping class in which Molly Conran and her lovely little Welsh pony came second. So all in all it was a good day for CRC juniors. HUGE THANK YOU to all my lovely helpers on the day: most of the committee plus: Lynne Clark - who jump judging all day, Nicky Sutcliffe, Sam Coomber, Liam Tomkins, Anne Smith, Tracy Pearce, Julie Evans all doing their 'stint' in the big ring and morning pole pickers Jenny and Amelia (from my yard).

CHRISTMAS AT HICKSTEAD CHRISTMAS AT HICKSTEAD On Friday 14th December about 20 of us headed to Hickstead Show-ground to attend their Christmas Party night. Held in the Members Bar overlooking the international arena, the intimate venue had been decorated with Christmas trees, fairy lights and stunning table dress-ings that created a lovely festive atmosphere. After a reception drink on arrival, the very tasty three course dinner was followed by dancing until 1am, where the dancing skills of many of us were “enhanced” shall we say, by the well stocked bar. The evening was great fun and £35 well spent—so we’ll be going again next year, hopefully with an

even bigger crowd so keep an eye out for it in the newsletters.

We had a great day at Sands Farm on the 6th January for the Farm Fencing Eventer Challenge competition. Member Alison Manning ran a superbly organised show (thank you Ali) which saw record number of entries in the 85cms Novice class as 46 competitors tested their skill over the course expertly built by John Farrell and lovingly decorated by the set-up team in the assorted Christmas trees and greenery we had taken with us. As always for this event, we loaded up our working hunter jumps to create a realistic eventer challenge course and class winners were treated to bags of Mainbale haylage very kindly donated by Dawn & Russell. The standard at this competition is always high as eventers use it as early warm-up for their forthcoming season, so members in the ribbons did exceptionally well to jump clear round the twisty course of 16 assorted fences. The mini saw Frances Goodsir (right) and Julie Hawkins in 3rd and 5th respectively, with Frances on her second ride placed 5th in that large novice class and Lynne Clark (pictured above) jumped a beautiful round to take third place in the open class at 1m+. A great start to 2013 for the club, thank you to everyone that helped make it such a success.

WINDSOR WINDSOR -- HERE COME THE LUCY’S!HERE COME THE LUCY’S! Sunday 17th Feb 2013

We were blessed with an uncharacteristic sunny day at Sands Farm for the time of year, with a very busy day including Royal Windsor Top Score Qualifiers for Area 11. The morn-ing saw probably the busiest I have seen in the four years I have been runnin this particu-lar show which was fantastic with lots of members in the rosettes—especially juniors. The afternoon was just as full with open entry top score classes alongside the RWHS qualifiers. I would like to thank our coursebuilder and judge John Farrell, along with help-ers to set up and on the day of Viv Pearson, Libby Halls, Jackie Russell, Jane Moore, Jayne Meldon, Rob Belton, Serena Hemmings, Julie Hawkins, Barbara Goodall, Sue McNamara, Amber and Matt for all their help, without you this show would not be the success it was. The afternoon saw us host the Area 11 Royal Windsor Top Score qualifiers with the top placed three competitors in each section qualifying for Windsor, forming and Area team. With CRC competitors in all sections other than the Junior Intermediate, we were hopeful of getting someone qualified (as we have for the past four years) and were delighted when first in the ring, Lucy Pearce riding Mo Boy pulled off a superbly planned round to amass 1150 points that was only beaten by one other. Just 60 points behind her, our other Lucy—Lucy Tomkins on Dougal (Pontgreen Uist) also rode a superb round to claim third place and the final team spot, meaning the Junior Novice Top Score class at Windsor will be contested by two CRC members—well done girls, you really made us proud! Good efforts were also made by Libby on Sprite, Hannah on Gilly, Katie on Gemini and Helen on Archer to put them in the placings but sadly not in the top three for a Windsor ticket. Lucy and Lucy will be competing on Saturday 11th May (which unfortunately clashes with our jumping at Felbridge) and they would love a large supporter group, so if you are heading to Windsor please do go and find them in the BHS Arena to cheer them on.

RED ROSETTES FOR TEAM CHIPSTEADRED ROSETTES FOR TEAM CHIPSTEAD Sunday 24th February 2013

It’s taken six years, but I’m delighted to put an image on the front cover of our team winning the Indoor Novice Show Jumping qualifier at Sands Farm. No juniors this time sadly, but a victory for the senior team of Steph Bishop on Sir Lancelot, Helen Buckman on Lordships Loose Cannon, Marie Manning on Streamstown Prince and Kathy Seller on Broadstone Action Man. Eight senior teams entered the competition with two out of the race in the first round, leaving 6 teams fighting it out. Steph started our competi-tion off with a super clear round on the coloured cob Lance, who at just 7 years old, is turning into a fabulous riding club all-rounder. Next up was Marie on Oli who needed a second look at the planks early on the course picking up four faults. Kathy and Spencer repeated Steph’s clear to give us another 0 on our score-card, and Helen on her new horse Archer finished our round 1 competition with another clear. As the best three scores count we were able to discard Oli’s four faults and finish the first round on 0 penalties, along with four other teams. In round two the course was changed, the jumps went up to 85cms and fillers were pulled in to make the track a little more substantial. Another clear for Steph started us well, followed by one for Marie, then Kathy and Helen too—oh hurrah—our competition finished on 0 penalties. The other four teams that finished round 1 on 0 penalties also had enough clears to finish their competition on 0, so all riders in all five teams went to jump off. The short jump-off course was well designed with a few twists and a few gallop stretches to test the all-round jump-off skills of those taking part. With only one qualification for the winning team it was decided our team tactic should be to just “go for it!”. Jumping in the same order as the previous rounds meant that Steph was our first competitor again. Unaccustomed to jump-off’s, Lance rose to the challenge, flying clear round the course in a little over 23 seconds giving us a great start. Oli and Marie found their old magic and added to our great start with another clear in just over 24 seconds putting the pressure on the other teams. The result wasn’t in the bag by any measure as Abinger Forest, Bookham and El-stead all responded with clear rounds too, so it was important that our final two competitors left the poles up AND the kept time low. Kathy and Spencer did not disappoint, clocking up one of the fastest clear rounds of the day (22 seconds) and leaving us in the secure position of finishing on 0. The pressure was off Helen but she completed her competition with a true jump-off round, clear in another great time of 23 seconds. So four clears in the jump-off, all within 2 seconds of each other put us in a very exciting position. Other teams also had enough clears to finish on 0 faults so we waited for the final result which all came down to time. To a jubilant cheer from the CRC crowd we were announced winners, a full five seconds faster than the next placed team, claiming our qualification card to the Winter Championships at Hartpury College in Gloucester-shire. The girls will be jumping on Saturday 30th March and we’d love to have as many supporters as possible to cheer them on as they take on the winners from all the other 22 area qualifiers. Let us know if you’d like to come! Well done girls—we were overdue a decent win, I’m so proud of you!

Sunday 24th February 2013 A week before the show I was beginning to worry as we didn’t have many entries, Monday the same, Tuesday morning ditto, and then suddenly it all changed, people obviously decided that they wanted to get there horses out, the weather didn’t look too bad, they weren’t partying the night before so didn’t mind the early morning etc, in the end we had 74 tests running that day which meant an 08.45 start and a 6pm finish and that didn’t include the setting up beforehand and the tidying up after. So there we were at the Diamond bright an early, before they even opened, to welcome all those competitors that had entered into the Walk and Trot test, the biggest class of the day. Although only one third of the class was Chipstead Riding Club members, it was great to see them doing so well, Chantelle Evans was a late substitution for the injured Kate Lee, she rode Shakira into first place on a score of 66.96%, committee member Rachel Mander came second on her young horse Buster Rebel, and non member Claire Hempston on Squiggle came third. Well done to Sue Izod, who was riding her lovely pony Rosie in her first ever dressage test, and to Martyna Gaska - both of whom have qualified for the Chipstead Riding Club Walk & Trot Championships in April. Well done to Jess Hudson on Red Charlie who came first in both Prelim tests on scores of 69.58% and 72.63% and has qualified for both the Chipstead Riding Club and Oldencraig Championships. In the first Prelim class members outdid themselves filling 5 out of the top 6 places, including to Libby Halls, Katie Holloway, Rachel Mander and Lindsey Cutler. In the second Prelim members again did really well, with Charlotte Davy coming second on the lovely Kippure Mighty Milo, Fran-cis Goodsir third on Sydserff Scots Fir and Lucy Pearce on Mo Boy fourth. Our Walk & Trot test judge Maureen McDonnell returned to compete in the afternoon and was pleasantly surprised to win the Novice 30 in style on Evidence, whom she had described to me as being rather naughty in the preceding weeks. Again members did well with Charlotte Davy com-ing second on a score of 69.62%, Frances Goodsir third on 68.46% and Julie Evans on The Rock-star on a score of 66.92%, In the final class of the day, a mixed class of Novice, Elementary and Medium tests, the highest percentage went to Martina Slater riding D’Abernon Gazzer in his Elementary test, then second came Maureen McDonnell on Sturtwood in a Novice test. Third also riding an Elementary test was Charlotte Pearson on Spring Song Mono. Well done to all those competitors that came along to compete, it was great to see so many mem-bers riding in the later tests. My thanks to all my helpers, Lindsey Steveneson, Sarah Cragg, Nicky Sutcliffe, Sue Lund, Sue McNamara and Kate Spalding, who spent hours on end standing or sitting around in the cold, writing for the judges and stewarding, we could not do this without you. My final thanks must go to the crew in reception and the servery, Jackie, you did a sterling job all day keeping people warm with hot tea and bacon rolls and when she finally sat down for her breakfast at about 5pm I requested more tea for our judges!!! Thanks to Vince who must have very dry hands with all the washing up he did (or did you wear rubber gloves???) and Jane for taking tea orders, and also to my glamorous assistant Barbara who kept me sane when my com-puter died during the 3rd class of the day. We finally left the Diamond at just before 7pm and I was in bed by 8.30pm!

EVER WANTED A GO AT ENDURANCE?EVER WANTED A GO AT ENDURANCE? This year Endurance GB (EGB) is once again offering a Team Endurance Event to affili-ated Riding Clubs on a national scale. The competition is now in its fourth year and is growing rapidly. Riding Clubs are invited to form endurance teams of three to six riders. A Club can have as many teams as they have interested horse and rider combinations. Each Riding Club can then enter their teams into any number of qualifying rides of 30kms to 35kms (about 20 miles). The qualifying rides can be chosen from over seventy EGB events throughout the country. Potential riders do not need any special equipment, particular breed or type of horse to get started. Only the rider, their horse and normal riding tack is required. Riders do not have to be members of Endurance GB in order to compete, but they must be current members of their affiliated Riding Club. The Riding Clubs must declare each horse and rider combination with the national organisers before they enter any qualifying ride. A team who completes a qualifying ride successfully will have its team score entered into a League Table for the Region in which the Club is based. A squad can then, if it chooses, enter a second or subsequent qualifying ride. The team score achieved at the second or subsequent qualifier will replace the existing score in the League Table if it is higher than the existing score. The team scores are calculated from the speed achieved over the course and the horse’s pulse at the final veterinary inspection. The top team in each League Table for the ten Regions and the top ten teams on a na-tional basis excluding the top ten from the League Tables will be offered a place in the Team Endurance Final at The British Horse Feeds Red Dragon Festival of Endurance on Sunday 6th October 2013. Some wild card places may also be offered at the discretion of the national organisers. Stabling, corralling, camping, lorry parking and refresh-ments will be available at the venue. Up-to-date Influenza Vaccination Certificates will be required for the final, as specified by British Riding Club rules. The rules of the competition and full details of the Team Endurance Event can be found on the dedicated website: www.rcteamevent.endurancegb.co.uk

If you have any immediate questions or would like to discuss the event further then please do not hesitate to contact Jane & John Hudson on 01398 332089 (before 9.00pm) or by email to [email protected].

Whilst shopping at Hickstead back in the summer – I couldn’t help but stop and look at some photo’s of pitiful donkeys and ponies at one of the Charity stands. The stand was the Gambia Horse and Donkey Trust. I got talking to the volunteer about the work they do, and it seems that our members may be able to offer some valuable support…This charity do some amazing work in the Gambia (one of the poorest countries in Africa), please visit them at www.gambiahorseanddonkey.org.uk when you get a moment – even if you only have time to click on the mission statement at the top left – it will tell you all you need to know about the important work they do. Many horses and donkeys tongues have been cut and disfigured by the harsh bits they use over there, but this can be pre-vented through exchanging them for something else. Most owners are very happy to ex-change their bit for a kinder alternative when given the opportunity. Through a bit ex-change system, they are able to help reduce the suffering of working equines in The Gambia. Here is where I think we can help – detailed in a paragraph that I have taken directly from the Website

URGENT BIT APPEAL We are in desperate need of donations of UK style bits to distribute to local farmers. Many owners work their horses and donkeys using barbaric rusty Senegalese bits or sim-ply rope tied through their animals' mouths. As you can imagine, this causes horrific mouth injuries. Many of the horses and donkeys we treat have wounds which are so eas-ily avoidable by using a correct bit. Sadly, the poor quality of the metal out in the Gambia means that it is not possible to manufacture UK style bits in the country, and as such we rely entirely on shipping out donated bits from the UK. When having a tack room clear out, or when purchasing a new bit, please give your old one a second life, and do-nate it to the Gambia Horse and Donkey Trust by taking it along to a Chipstead Rid-ing Club show. Donating a bit is one of the easiest ways to make such a huge difference to a working equine out in the Gambia. Thank you. As well as pony sized bits, they are also interested in collecting padded saddle cloths (squares rather than saddle shaped ones – like to old fashioned poly pads, to help allevi-ate the suffering of a rubbing harness), pony sized leather & webbing head collars and bridle work – even if broken. They work only donkeys and small ponies in the Gambia so full sized stuff is not of use, and bits ideally should be 4½ - 5”. I had wrongly assumed that they would be interested in snaffle type bits only, but I asked if this was the case and the lady told me “Oh no, some of these animals have been used to working with rusty wire in their mouths – if we suddenly put them in a nice comfy snaffle, they disap-pear over the hill with the cart…!” So there’s your answer – stronger bits also welcomed! The Charity also do a lot of work with the children in the Gambia who are generally re-sponsible for caring for the working animals. They organise an annual horse show, to encourage the children to take pride in their animals health and appearance and it is also used as an opportunity to get as much information across to the participants and audi-ence as possible. The Trust feel that it is an excellent way to reward those who take great care of their animals and it encourages those who need a little help. So – clear out time! If you do come across anything that you think will be of use – please leave with any of our show secretaries, any committee member, bring with you to the AGM, or call me and I can arrange to pick up from you. Please feel free to put the at-tached notice up at your yards – the more people that can help, the better! Feel free to call me for more info – and if you get a spare 5 minutes, do take a look at the website.
