David E.Balk is Professor in the Department of Health and Nutrition Sciencesat Brooklyn College of CUNY and Director of the Graduate Program inThanatology.He is Editor-in-Chief of the Handbook of Thanatology:The EssentialBody of Knowledge for the Study of Death,Dying,and Bereavement (ADEC, 2007)and recently co-edited Adolescent Encounters with Death,Bereavement,andCoping (Springer, 2009).He also serves as an editor of Death Studies, a peerreviewed professional journal.
The Dame Cicely Saunders Celebrationhonors the life of Dame Saunders asfounder of the modern hospice movement.She established St. Christopher’s Hospice inLondon in 1967 to meet the physical, social,psychological and spiritual needs of dyingpatients and their family/friends.A nurse,medical social worker and finally also physi-cian and writer, Saunders is acclaimed forimproving end-of-life care around theglobe.This event celebrates her lifework on what would have been her 91stbirthday (June 22, 1918 - July 14, 2005).
