Business Sessions

Kevin Kramers, (C.E.T., R.R.O.) - ARCA Technical Officer 1st Business Session Topic: Turning up the heat on PV installations in Alberta Spring 2016 brought an aggressive campaign to install rooftop-mounted photovoltaic systems to compliment the Alberta governments’ renewable energy initiatives. ARCA was contacted daily by roofing contractors, architects, inspectors and building owners on how these systems would affect their roofing assembly. In 2017, the ARCA researched third party studies, investigated existing installations and reached out to international organizations to develop PV installation standard that would enable these systems to be installed while maintaining the primary function of the roof, providing a watertight building. Although the results have not always been considered popular, the

ARCA brought a proactive approach to dealing with this complicated issue. Join Kevin as he outlines ARCA’s commitment to developing installation standards amidst a challenging environment to ensure the building owner is provided with a product that follows best practices and established criteria ensuring their greatest asset, their roof, will perform for many years.

Dan Leduc, Partner at Norton Rose Fulbright - Global Law Firm 2nd Business Session Topic: The Latest News in Legal Trends/Prompt Payment Update Dan worked very closely with the National Trade Contractors Coalition of Canada (NTCCC) during the Senate Committee hearings. Today, Dan will provide conference delegates with an update on Bill S-224, Canada’s Prompt Payment Act, and exactly what it will mean to contractors, manufacturers, and suppliers. In addition, Dan will supply attendees with the latest news in legal trends in the construction industry.

Jean-François Côté, Ph.D. Director, Standards & Scientific Affairs - Soprema 3rd Business Session Topic: Application and use of CSA A123.21 to roofing projects under NBCC 2015 Now that CSA A123.21 is referenced in the National Building Code of Canada, what has changed? Who decides? Who is liable? And as we thought we had it all figured out, NBCC moved to ultimate limit states design, imposing a 40% increase to calculated wind loads. Jean-François represents Soprema on technical committees of industry associations (ARMA, PIMA, XPSA, CIMAC) and is actively engaged in various North American standards development organizations (CSA, ASTM, ULC). He is a registered chemist

in the province of Québec (OCQ), is chair of the CSA A123 technical committee on Bituminous Roofing Materials, and is co-chair of the ASTM D08.04 Subcommittee on “Felts, Fabrics and Bituminous Sheet Materials”.

Tom Toner, M.Sc., B. Sc., Business Development Manager, ECMM 4th Business Session Topic: Drug and Alcohol policy in the Age of Cannabis! An introduction to Drug and Alcohol policies and how will the legalization of Cannabis affect these policies! Tom came back to the Halifax-Dartmouth region last fall following a 20-year series

of increasingly-responsible experiences in various health-related companies.

Before coming to the region, the first time, he completed his master’s degree in

Exercise Physiology at the University of Saskatchewan following an undergraduate degree at St. F.X. University.

After 16 years in the pharmaceutical industry, 8 of them in Nova Scotia and 8 in NB and PEI, Tom has a

thorough understanding of the ins and outs of the medical and public health systems and how it relates to drug

issues. He then worked for 4 years as the Manager of Optimal Health in Moncton before joining ECMM. Last

fall he relocated to Dartmouth as the Business Development Manager at ECMM. ECMM is one of Atlantic

Canada’s leading Occupational Health and Safety companies.
