Creating a Running Head on a Macintosh Computer

1. Open Microsoft Word.

2. Click “File” Click “New Blank Document”

3. Click “File” Click “Page Set Up”

4. Set settings to “Microsoft Word” Apply page setup, settings to

“Whole Document”

5. Click on “Margins”

6. Set margins to 1” Set header and footer to 0.5”

7. Click “Layout” Click “Header and Footers” Click “Different first page” Click “OK”

Notice the “Default” option. You may click this instead of “OK” if you plan on using this format regularly. This will cause any new document to be set up in this way.

8. Click “View” Click “Header and Footer”

9. Type “Running head:” as shown without

parenthesis. Type your title in all capital letters next to

“Running head:” Click “Close”

10. On the second page, double click on

the header area (top of page 2). Enter ONLY your title in all capital

letters. Hit the Tab key until it reaches the

furthest right of the page.

11. Click “Header and Footer” in

the ribbon area of the menu. Click “Page #” (your number

should appear) Click “Close”

12. When finished your pages

should look like this.

13. SPECIAL NOTE This document shows how to create an APA running head. For use in

other situations Microsoft Word provides a variety of running heads from the “Headers and Footers” tab on the ribbon.

These are not appropriate for this course.
