Things to Note
This workbook is part of a web training and not intended to be used for self-study. To access the web
training, use this url: www3.govst.edu/hptadvanced/http/amy/webportfoliovideo/index.html.
There is a small amount of pre-work necessary before recording your 30 second Captivate video. More
information, images, and a job aid are available in the web training.

Introduction
The purpose of this training is to enable you to create a web portfolio video to showcase your
instructional design skills. As a consultant, it is important to showcase your skills with a web portfolio
video because prospective clients and employers will see your work instead of just reading about your
projects. The benefit of creating a web portfolio video is showcasing two skills at the same time, the
skill you record in Captivate and the finished Captivate video! You may be familiar with creating a web
portfolio video if you have written a resume or created a video in any development tool.

Describe five components of a three minute portfolio video
Describe the introduction:
The introduction should contain a purpose statement. The purpose statement should include
the intention of your web portfolio. For example, “The purpose of this web portfolio video is to
advertise key features and benefits of my work in instructional design and provide a 30 second
demonstration of one of my skills.
The introduction should also contain an overview of the contents of the video.
The image below provides another example of purpose statement language, and an example of
an overview of the contents of the video.
Describe the features and benefits:
Key features and benefits of your instructional design skills should be just that, key. It’s
important to remember that a web portfolio video is not a recreation of your resume. It’s a brief
advertisement of the skills you want prospective employers and clients to focus on. It’s an opportunity
to advertise for the type of work you are great at! So choose your key features and benefits wisely;
think about the work you want to do. Below is an example of features and benefits for a web portfolio
video:

Describe the demonstration of skills video
A great 30 second video will show prospective employers and clients your ability to use a
development skill. The skill you choose should be one for which prospective employers and clients are
in the market. On the “Additional Information” tab on the website you will find a link to Indeed.com.
You can peruse job ad websites to develop a list of desirable development skills and choose one that you
know how to use. Alternatively, you can choose from the list a skill you don’t have and invest in learning
it to showcase on your web portfolio video.
To see an example of a demonstration video, go to the web training, the “5 Components” tab,
and then click the link for 30 second video.
Describe the summary of business/academic accomplishments
The summary should be brief and include a link to your business and/or academic
accomplishments. It is not appropriate to include your resume here either. A link to a PDF of your
resume or to your resume on your web portfolio is recommended. See the example below of a
summary of business and/or academic accomplishments.

Describe the conclusion
The conclusion should simply indicate who produced the video.
