Create an Animated News ReportFrames 6 - Drawing Tools


Introduction

Launch Frames.

You will see a blank frame on the left and the Tools panel on the right.

Use the Shape Tool

You can use the drawing tools in Frames to illustrate your own animations.

Click the Shape tool on the Tools panel.

You will see the Shape Options.

Select the circle.

Click and drag on the blank frame to draw the head of a person.

You can change the fill and stroke of this shape.

You will see the shape options in the Tools panel.

Click and drag the Stroke Width slider to the left to make the line around the edge ofthe shape thinner.

Click the Color well in the fill area and select a skin tone.



Draw a Triangle

You can use the triangle shape to add a neck.

Click the Shape tool again and choose the triangle.

Move the over the bottom left side of the face.

Click and drag down to the right past the chin.



The triangle shape is in front of the face, or oval.

Go to the Options menu and choose Send to back.

The triangle will now show behind the oval face.

Duplicate a Shape

You can duplicate a shape.



Click the oval shape you drew for the face.

Click the Duplicate button on the toolbar.

You will see a second copy of the face.

Change the Curves on a Shape

You can change the curves on a shape you have added.

You will see four small blue boxes, or nodes, on the edge of the shape.

You can change the curve of the shape as it goes through a node.

Click the tip of the arrow cursor inside the node at the bottom of the oval.

You will see two blue node arrows.



Click and drag either arrow away from the node to change the shape of the bottom ofthe oval.

The curve will change through the node. Try to drag straight to the right or left so thatyou create an even hairline.

Click the Color box in the Shapes Options area on the Tools panel to choose a haircolor for the character.



Resize and Move a Shape

You can resize and move a shape.

Move the cursor over one of the large blue handles around the corner of the hairshape.

Click and drag away from the shape to make it larger than the face.

Move the cursor over the middle of the hair shape.

The cursor will change to four arrows.

Click and drag the shape to position it directly over the face shape.

Go to the Options menu and choose Send to Back.



The hair will be behind the face.

Click the Duplicate button the toolbar.

You will see a second copy of the hair over the face.

Move the cursor over the blue handle at the bottom of this shape.

Click and drag toward the top of the face, to change the large hair shape into bangs.



Click and drag the handles on the sides of the shape to get it to fit correctly.

Save



You can save a Frames file so that you can work on it during multiple sessions.

Click the Save button on the toolbar.

You will see the Save Project As dialog.

Type a name and choose a place to save the file.

Click the Save button.

Draw More Shapes

You can group objects together making them easier to move and duplicate.

Click the Shape tool and choose the circle again.

Click and drag on top of the face to draw an eye.

Release the mouse button.



The eye will be the same color as the hair.

Click the Color box on the Tools panel and choose white.

Click the Duplicate button on the toolbar.

You will see a second copy of the eye.

Click the Color box on the Tools panel and choose black.

Move the cursor over one of the handles on this shape.

Click and drag toward the middle of the shape to make it smaller and more round.

Move the cursorover the middle of the object.

Click and drag to position this over the white part of the eye.



(If the shape is too small to drag without dragging nodes and changing its shape, clickthe Undo button. Then, go to the View menu and choose Node Handles. This will turnoff the nodes and make it easier to drag the shape. Go back to the View menu andchoose Node Handles to turn them back on when you are done.)

Click away from the face to see your work.

Group Shapes

To group these two pieces together, you need to select them both.

Move the cursor over the white part of the eye.

Click the mouse button to select this part of the eye.

Press and hold down the Shift key on the keyboard.

Move the cursor over the black part of the eye.

Click to select this part.

Click the Group button on the toolbar.



The two parts of the eye will be grouped together.

Click the Duplicate button the toolbar.

You will see a second copy of eye.

Move the cursor over the middle of this eye and drag it next to the other eye.

Click the frame away from the face.

Use the Pencil Tool

The Pencil tool lets you add detail to a drawing.

Click the Pencil tool on the Tools panel.



The cursor will change to a pencil.

Move the cursor over the face to the place you want to start drawing a nose.

Click and drag to draw a nose for the character.

Go to the Edit menu and choose Select All.

All of the shapes in the character will be selected.

Click the Group button on the toolbar.

All of the shapes will be grouped together.

Move the cursor over the middle of the face.

The cursorwill change to four arrows.

Click and drag the character to the bottom left corner of the frame so that the head isnot floating, but appears to be part of a body that is off the frame.



Finish the Character

The part of this character that you will animate is her mouth.

Click the Shape tool on the Tools panel and select the circle.

Move over the bottom of the character’s face and click and draw to draw an oval-shaped mouth.



While the mouth is still selected, click the Color box on the tools panel and chooseblack.

Duplicate a Frame

You can duplicate an entire frame the same way you duplicated individual shapes.

Click the frame in the storyboard at the bottom of the window.



Click the Clone button on the toolbar.

You will see a second copy of the frame in the storyboard.

Click the Clone button on the toolbar again.

You will see third copy of the frame in the Frame List.

This is the frame that is currently selected.

Edit the Animation

Click the mouth on the character on this frame.

Move the cursor over the blue handles on the side of the mouth and resize it so that itis smaller and more of a circle shape.



Click the second frame in the Frame List.

Click the mouth on the character on this frame.

Move the cursor over the blue node on the top of the mouth and drag toward the middleof the mouth to make it look more closed, or like a smile.

If you are having a hard time with the node handle, use a sizing handle to adjust theshape.



You have now created three frames with the mouth in different positions.

Clone Frames

Go to the Edit menu and choose Select All Frames.


You will see a second set of the three frames.







You will now have 24 frames in the animation.


Preview the Animation

You can preview the animation.

The timeline is currently set to the last frame.

Click the Rewind button on the toolbar.

Click the Play button on the toolbar.

The animation will end at the last frame.

Change Frame Duration

The character’s mouth is moving, but not very quickly. You can change the length of



time a frame is shown.


This will select all of the frames in the list.

You will see the duration slider at the bottom of the Options panel.

The duration is currently set to .5 seconds.

Click and drag the Duration slider to the left to change the duration of all of the framesto .2 seconds.

Click the Rewind button on the toolbar.

Click the Play button on the toolbar.

Since the frames are repeating in the exact same order, the talking character looks likeshe is repeating the same thing over and over.

Click any frame in the storyboard.

Click and drag it to a new spot in the storyboard.

Repeat this process with at least 5 more frames at different parts of the storyboard.

This way the animation will be a bit more random and more closely reflect a naturalspeech pattern.

Use the skills you have learned to preview the changes.

Add a Background

You can add backgrounds from the library.



Click the Library button.

You will see the folders in the Library.

Double-click the Backgrounds folder.

Double-click the Locations folder.

Click the picture you want to use for the background.

Click the green arrow to add the image to the background of frame.



You will see the background behind your reporter on the frame.

You can add this background to all of the frames in the animation.

Click the Tools button.

Click the Apply to All Frames button on the tools panel.

Add a New Frame

You can add more frames to an animation such as a frame for a title.

Click the Rewind button to move to the first frame in the storyboard.

Click the New Frame button on the toolbar.



You will see a new frame in the list after the frame you selected.

Move the cursor over this new blank frame.

Click and drag it to the first position in the storyboard.

Add and Resize Text

You can add text to a frame for titles, conversation, information, or credits.

Click the Text button on the Tools panel.

You will see a text object in the middle of the frame.

Type a title for your news report.

For example: Action News 1



Move the cursor over one of the corner handles.

Drag away from the text to make it larger.

Move the cursor over the bottom handle in the middle.

Drag away from the text to make it larger.

Move over the middle of the text box to position the text.

Repeat this process until the text fills the frame.

Format Text

You can change the way text looks.

You will see text formatting options in the Tools panel.

Click the Font pull-down menu to choose a new font.

Click the Center Align button to center the text in the text box.

Click the Color box and choose a new text color.

The duration for this frame shows at the bottom of the Options panel.

Click and drag the Duration slider so that this frames shows for 2-3 seconds, or longenough for someone to read it.




Add a Transition

You can add transitions between frames.

Click the Library button.

Click the Home button at the top of the window to return to the main categories.

Double-click the Transitions folder.

You will see thumbnail previews of the transitions.

Find the transition you want to use.

Click it to select it.

You will see a green arrow in the lower right corner.

Click the green arrow to add the transition to this frame.



The preview area will change and you will see the transition in your storyboard at thebottom of the window.

Record Narration

You can record narration to an animation. You will record a news report at the locationyou chose for your background.

Make sure your microphone is plugged in or that your computer is set to record fromyour current microphone.

Click the third frame in the Frame list. This is the frame where the reporter beginsspeaking.

Click the Tools button.



Click the Record button on the Tools panel.

Think about what you are going to say. Ideally, you would have written a script buildingthe animation.

For example: I am coming to you live from the Great Pyramids at Giza.

Click the Record button on the Tools panel.

Begin speaking into the microphone.

As you talk, the animation will preview.

Click the Stop button on the Tools panel when you are done.

You will see the Recorded Audio on the storyboard at the bottom of the window.



If you want to record again, select the audio in the timeline and press the Delete key onthe keyboard.

Click the Rewind and Play buttons to watch and listen to the animation.

Your narration may take more time than the frames you have created. If so, select andclone more frames until they continue all the way to the end of the narration.

Repeat this process until you see a frame past the recorded audio.


Export an Animated Video

Click the Project button on the toolbar.



Click the Export button.

Click the Computer button in the Export a Video area.

You will see the Save Movie As dialog.

Choose a place to save the video.

Click the Save button.

Frames will create the movie.

When it is finished, you will see a Finished Exporting dialog.

Click the Launch button to watch the movie in a video player on your computer.

Close the video.

Close the Frames application.
