The Mentor Speaks

Higher appreciation at Hitex 2012

The one and only dictum by which team LHP is always

obsessed with is - ‘Customer first’. As a result, it is always

our ceaseless effort ‘to know the customer’, ‘to know

what he wants’, ‘to evolve, refine and supply what he

wants’, ‘to be within his sight and reach’, ‘to know how he

responds’, ‘to serve him better’ and ‘to satisfy him to the

fullest’. For reaching out to the customer, we tap various

resources such as customer meets, communication

drives, newsletters, customer feedback campaigns,

and many more. One such means of proving ourselves

to the customer is the various industrial exhibitions. LHP

makes it a point to participate in such exhibitions to

showcase its proud product range.

One such successful display of LHP prowess was

organised on the occasion of Hitex 2012 exhibition held

at Hyderabad from 23-26 August 2012. The event, held

with special reference to SMEs, offered a good

opportunity for LHP to display its products such as

Dear Readers,

As usual, LHP premises

are buzzing with several

activities during this

financial year. We are

s teadi ly and f i rmly

marching towards our

goal of crossing the

turnover of Rs.2500

million. Several steps are

being simultaneously taken to achieve this.

Looking at the wider acceptance and growing demand

for L'Power range of gearmotors and gearboxes, a new

plant is under construction and will be commissioned

early next year. This will enhance our production

capacity of motors and gearboxes. Our team of

engineers has been strengthened by the induction of a

pool of new talent in design, development,

manufacturing and QA departments. With this addition,

now we are able to respond to the customer's

requirements faster than before.

We are making rapid progress to achieve approvals

and certifications from leading agencies. They reaffirm

higher safety, quality, performance and reliability of our

products.

LHP Flame-proof motors are certified with ATEX

mark, assuring higher safety. This has been achieved

after an elaborate audit by an international notified body

from Europe. We have also established all Quality

Control methods stipulated by Engineers India Ltd. and I

am proud to say that we are now EIL compliant. Apart

from this, several other approvals have been received

during the last 6 months and a lot of new products have

been developed as per customers' specific

requirements. Non-sparking Motors for Gas Authority of

India is one such development worth mentioning.

Here, I would like to specially mention that the LHP-

EURA range of VFDs and Soft Starters introduced in

February 2011 has gained momentum and we have

completed nearly 500 installations. LHP-EURA products

are being preferred by various industries because of

their advanced technology, excellent service support

and most competitive prices. Read more about it all in

this issue.

Season’s greetings and best wishes for a prosperous

new year ahead.

Ø Soft Starter is a device used with AC electric motors to

limit the starting current and starting torque. This

reduces the mechanical stress on the motor and shaft,

as well as the electrodynamic stresses on the attached

power cables and electrical distribution network,

extending the life span of the system.

Ø Motor Soft Starter can consist of mechanical or

electrical devices, or a combination of both. Mechanical

soft starters include clutches and several types of

couplings using a fluid , magnetic forces, or steel shot to

transmit torque, similar to other forms of torque limiter.

Electrical soft starters can be any control system that

reduces the torque by temporarily reducing the voltage

or current input, or a device that temporarily alters how

the motor is connected in the electric circuit .

Ø Another way to limit motor starting current is a series

reactor. If an air core is used for the series reactor, then

a very efficient and reliable soft starter can be designed

which is suitable for 3 phase induction motors. Using an

air core series reactor soft starter is a very common

practice for applications like pump, compressor, fan,

etc.

Soft Starter technology

and dependable service.

All our efforts have yielded rich dividends and LHP-

EURA installations are on the verge of crossing the 500

mark in such a short period. This rapid march has been

possible due to the customers’ ever-growing response

to and acceptance of LHP-EURA drives.

The customer base of LHP is wide and varied. It includes

industries such as chemical and process plants,

pharmaceuticals, machine tools, elevators, material

handling systems and so on. Drives are used in

applications ranging from small appliances to the

largest of mill drives and compressors. LHP-EURA VFDs

are available with voltage and current ratings covering

a wide range of single-phase and three-phase AC

motors. AC drives are used to bring about process and

quality improvements in industrial and commercial

applications like flow, monitoring, pressure, speed,

temperature and tension.

The LHP-EURA range is especially more useful for fan

and pump speed control applications in various

industries as the products ensure significant energy

savings. LHP can also provide customers with total drive

systems as one-stop-solution.

¢

¢

Soft Starters can be set up to the requirements of the

individual application. In pump applications, a soft start

can avoid pressure surges. Conveyor belt systems can

be smoothly started, avoiding jerk and stress on drive

components. Fans or other systems with belt drives can

be started slowly to avoid belt slipping.

In all systems, a soft start limits the inrush current and so

improves stability of the power supply and reduces

transient voltage drops that may affect other loads.

Across the line starting of induction motors is

accompanied by inrush currents up to 7 times higher

than running current, and starting torque up to

3 times higher than running torque. The increased

torque results in sudden mechanical stress on the

machine which leads to a reduced service life.

Moreover, the high inrush current stresses the power

supply, which may lead to voltage dips. As a result, the

operability of sensitive consumers may be impaired.

Applications

Motor and machine

It has been only a year and a half since LHP established

a tie-up with China’s EURA Drives Electric Co. Ltd. for

VFDs and Soft Starters. The association began in

February, 2011. And, in an amazingly short span, LHP

EURA has created a sensation in the market with its

nearly 500 installations.

The rapid pace of industrialisation in India has opened

gates for the market of VFDs and Soft Starters. There do

exist several players in this market including a few MNC

giants. But, not many have a thorough and good

understanding of the Indian market backed by a sharp

focus on offering the perfect blend of technology, service

and price. And that’s where LHP scored an edge over

others. With its prudent insight of the market, developed

over the last 30 years, LHP successfully bridged gaps

and made a timely launch of LHP-EURA range of VFDs

and Soft Starters. We launched the LHP-EURA range

after an in-depth study of the market with the aim of

offering advanced technology, yet most cost-effective

drive solutions to the Indian market. We also established

a Central Marketing Office at Pune, for our products to

reach our customers faster and nationwide. An efficient

team of experts at this central office handles our

marketing activities to deliver reliable drive solutions

LHP UPDATE Issue 14 November 2012

¢ Star-Delta start-up

Ø Three-phase motor with low to high power rating

Ø Six conductors to the motor

Ø Reduced starting torque, 1/3 of the nominal torque

Ø High mains load due to current peak during switch-over

from Y to D

Ø High mechanical stress due to torque surge during

switch-over from Y to D

Ø Two or three switching devices, more maintenance

Ø Torque surges entail high mechanical stress on the

machine, which results in higher service costs and

increased wear. High currents and current peaks lead

to high fixed costs charged by the power supply

companies (peak current calculation) and to increased

mains and generator loads.

Ø A S o f t S t a r t e r c o n t i n u o u s l y c o n t r o l s t h e

three-phase motor’s voltage supply during the start-up

phase. This way, the motor is adjusted to the machine’s

load behaviour. Mechanical operating equipment is

accelerated in a gentle manner. Service life,

operating behaviour and work flows are positively

influenced.

Ø Match the kW of the motor with that of the Starter.

LHP-EURA range starts at 15 kW. Other companies start

at 3 kW (usually.) We can recommend a VFD for less than

15 kW as all VFD can also work like a Soft Starter.

Ø Selection between HFR 1000 and HFR 2000 soft starter.

The 1000 series is a 3 wire output and the 2000 series is a

6 wire output.

Ø The 2000 series monitors the current on a real time basis.

There are three separate wire connections to the bypass

contactor. Bypass contactor is needed in the event that

the Soft Starter fails and you need to start the motor

through conventional means - i.e. Star Delta starting or

DOL starting.

Ø You can have group drive, i.e. 10 motor to one Soft Starter.

To select add the kW of all motors and then add 10 to 20%

as a safety margin. The kW rating you get is the kW of the

soft starter. All motors to have similar kW not necessarily

same kW- e.g. 3 kW, 5 kW, 7.5 kW in one group, with

protection device.

Ø Having Example 2 kW, 200 kW, 300 kW, 5 kW in one group

is not advisable.

¢ Selection of the Soft Starter

LHP-EURA drives are characterised by the

following special features.

Ø Auto torque promotion and auto slip

compensation realise larger output torque

at low frequency

Ø User-defined curve, V/F curve can be

adjusted

Ø Lower-noise, carrier-wave frequency can

be adjusted from 2 kHz to 10 kHz

Ø Control protection is immediate and

reliable which improves system stability

Ø Optional built-in filter

Ø Compatible with NPN and PNP types

Ø Advanced vector control technology

realises more precise control and more

excellent performance

With these features, the demand for LHP-

EURA range is ever growing from a wide

cross-section of industries. Do join the 500

plus club and start reaping the benefits.

MOTORS DRIVES

The welfare activities at LHP do not remain restricted

to our employees only. They reach out to their families

as well. It has been an annual event at LHP for several

years when employees' children who score more

than 85% marks are specially rewarded with

scholarships in the presence of renowned chief guests

and Mrs. Manali Thakre.

‘Children are the future

pillars of the nation’ - is not

only preached at LHP, but is

devoutly practised here.

Being aware of the role of

education in shaping one's

future and society on the

who le , LHP has been

motivating young minds to

do better and better in academics, through rewards and

scholarships offered to them every year. The prizes also

spread awareness about the importance of education,

help students to concentrate on their efforts and

enhance an educational atmosphere amongst our

employees' families. As this academically beneficial

activity has been conducted by LHP annually for several

years, we are proud to mention that several past winners

of LHP scholarships are today holding high positions in

various fields. They stand witness to the success of LHP's

long-term welfare activity.

It is highly remarkable that the number of LHP

scholarships and rewards winners has increased by

40% than that of the last year. LHP felicitated about 100

meritorious students this year. It is also noteworthy that a

few other industries have taken a leaf out of LHP and

have started organizing similar activities.

Lets' all strive for a better society.
