CREATING A SIMULATION IN RWD INFOPAK

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to produce a simulation in RWD Info Pak that conforms to the Team SPAWAR format.

1.1 THE CONFIGURATION SETTINGS

Before starting to create the simulation, you should configure RWD Info Pak to match the following standard settings.

1 In the Start menu, follow the menu path: Programs | RWD Info Pak | Simulator | Simulator

2 Click on the Help menu and select Preferences.

3 Under the General tab, enter a Default Save Location.

Next, ensure that the settings match those in the red box at right.

The colors (in RGB):

Desktop: 255,255,255

Mouse Action: 255,0,0

Key Actions: 0,0,255

Edit Action: 0,255,255

Tool tip: 255,255,0

Do not click ok.

4 Select the Publishing tab.

The Font Color’s RGB designation is: 0, 0, 128 (blue).

The Background Color’s RGB designation is: 192, 192, 192 (gray).

Note: this tab affects the look of the Steps Window in the final simulation.

Click OK when you have finished.

8 Under the file menu, select Lesson Properties.

9 Set the Rubber Band to option to Transparent, then click OK.

1.2 THE RECORDING PROCESS

Now that you have your settings in place, you can begin to create a new recording.

1 In the Start menu, follow the menu path: Programs | RWD Info Pak | Simulator | Recorder

2 When Recorder opens, select the New icon.

3 When the dialog opens, enter a File Name into the field.

The file name should use the following format:

Module – Transaction Code – Description

Example:

ME – ME51N – Purchase Requisitions

Ensure that you are creating a Simulator output.

Click the Green Arrow to continue.

4 Enter a title into the Title field and your name into the Owner field. Enter the Transaction Code into the appropriate field.

After completing the two fields, click on the Green checkmark to continue.

Enter a name that reflects the procedure you will teach.

5 Log into SAP and prepare your screens.

On the recorder menu bar, select the Start Recording icon.

6 Perform your procedure within SAP or another program.

7 (Optional) If you must perform another task after starting your simulation, select the Pause button at any time to pause the recording.

Remember that RWD InfoPak records mouse clicks, not time elapsed.

8 When you have completed the procedure and have obtained the necessary results, click on the Stop Recording button.

9 If the simulation does not load, click the Simulation Editor button.

10 Close the recorder once the simulation window has opened.

You have now created and saved your simulation.

1.3 THE EDITING PROCESS

Editing the simulation is a complex but important process. While the specifics of the process will vary from simulation to simulation, the general process below describes the most important tools in the editing process.

NB: The goal of a simulation is to provide an authentic SAP experience for the user. Keep this in mind as you add and delete steps.

1.3.1 OPENING YOUR SIMULATION

0 To retrieve your recently recorded simulation, open the Simulator. Under the file menu, find the .ssf file from the recently opened file list.

1.3.2 UNDERSTANDING THE STEPS WINDOW

1 Using the Steps Window on the right side of the screen, examine the general flow of the captured screens. Headings (which appear in green) organize the steps (which appear in yellow). Headings do not contain screen captures or data, whereas steps do. Delete any steps that appear redundant or incorrect by pressing the Delete key.

Headings do not contain screenshots. They organize the steps.

Steps contain screenshots and data.

1.3.3 CREATING A NOTE

5 At right is an example of how to use a note. A note’s text should direct the learner, provide relevant simulation information, or prompt them to make a choice.

4 In the Note Properties window, ensure that the background color, border color, and border size match the screen at right. Select a note format that will not interfere with other onscreen elements (such as text fields) and points to the appropriate field. Use the icons at center sparingly, as they can distract the learner. Click OK when you have selected an appropriate note format.

6 Click in the text in the

note box to bring up the text edit menu. The text edit menu allows you to alter the text’s appearance. The screenshot at right shows the default options.

7 Use bold letters to indicate the field that the user must edit. Use blue to indicate information that the user must enter.

To move a note, click and drag the note when the crosshair appears

1.3.4 ADDING A STEP

1 To add a step, select Insert | Steps in the Simulator. Ensure that you have clicked on the step that

3 If you are creating a step from a new capture, the dialog at right will appear. Click the green checkmark.

4 InfoPak will now launch the Recorder.

1.3.5 ADDING AN ACTION

8 When recording a simulation, InfoPak automatically records the actions that you perform. However, you may want to add a second action to a step. To add an action to the step (such as a click or text entry)

9 Select the action type, then adjust the settings accordingly and press OK. A mouse action requires the user to click on a specific spot. A key action requires the user to press a specific key (such as Tab or Enter.) An edit action requires the user to type something into a field. A mouse move action requires the user to move their mouse along a specific path (such as drag-and-drop, or scroll).

10 Adjust the rubber band to fit around the area relevant to that step.

1.3.6 EDITING AN ACTION

1 To edit an action, right-click on the action in the editing screen. Then, select Edit Action…

In this menu, you can change the action’s Type, Trigger (action), size, and Border size.

1.3.7 REMOVING THE STEP TAGS

10 Right click on step in the steps window and select Edit Step.

11 In the Step Properties window, ensure that the Screen Title and Step Text fields are blank

Click OK after you have deleted the text, and repeat this action for all steps. This step is important to ensure that the output is uniform. Do not hit enter after deleting the text.

1.3.8 INSERTING A POWERPOINT SLIDE

12 In PowerPoint, create a few slides that introduce and explain the instructional goals and scenarios of the simulation. An example is displayed at right. The slide details the simulation’s scenario.

13 Select the first step in the simulation. Select the File menu and click Import PowerPoint.

14 Use the dialog box to

find and select your PowerPoint document.

15 InfoPak will import the

PowerPoint slide into a new window. Your simulation is still open, but is hidden behind the PowerPoint window. After Info Pak imports the document, right click and copy the slide from

the new document and paste it into your simulation.

16 Make sure you have

selected the current first slide in the simulation and click OK.

17 You also can use the

copy and paste procedure to change the order of the steps.

1.3.9 RENDERING A PREVIEW

15 Peform a preview rendering to ensure continuity within the simulation. Start the preview by clicking the Preview button on the icon bar. If there are any anomalies, return and adjust them. If Info Pak prompts you to save the file, select Yes.

1.4 THE PUBLISHING PROCESS

Publishing the simulation is the final phase of the process. Since the simulation’s settings were changed at the outset, the Publishing phase will be fairly straightforward.

STEP ACTION EXAMPLE

1 Before publishing your project, you must resize the file to fit onto a 1024x768 screen. Begin this process by selecting the Tools menu and selecting Size.

2 Reduce the file size to 70%, then click OK.

3 Once you are sure that

your file is complete, select Yes.

4 Next, click on the Tools

menu and select Spell Check.

5 Select Entire Lesson and

click OK.

6 Under the file menu, select the Publish option.

7 Select Yes when

prompted.

8 In the Simulation

Publishing Wizard, browse and select the Location that will contain the final product. Then, select Next.

9 Click Finish to complete your simulation.

Congratulations! You have completed and rendered a simulation!

1.5 APPENDIX A: INTERNET EXPLORER ERRORS

If you encounter en error in Internet Explorer when running a finished simulation, perform the following procedure:

1 If this message appears at

the top of your browser, click on it.

2 A dialog box will drop down from the bar. Select Allowed Blocked Content…

3 Select Yes in the

window.

4 Perform this procedure

again if necessary.
