Consider the bigger picture of an MBA education, beyond management skills alone.
T o a degree, all business schools teach similar skills. But a unique learning environment and underlying philosophy separate Boston University School of Management from the others. We’re passionate about educating leaders who focus on creating value for the world. We seek students who want their lives’ work to
be meaningful, and we’re dedicated to making their education as relevant as it can be. Best of all, we provide a multitude of pathways to a degree.
We seek those who embrace a culture of innovation, cooperation, and change. IMBA students start with summer coursework—presented in intensive formats—in Shanghai and Beijing before arriving in Boston for the start of the fall semester. During site visits in China, you’ll immerse yourself in local culture and business practices, compare alternative management methods, and contribute to team projects with fellow students.

Rachel never saw herself as “the business school type,” but after six years of working in both higher education at Stanford University and for a K-12 focused nonprofit, she learned two things. First, thatshelovedmission-drivenorganizations,andsecond,thatmanyoftheseorganizationslackedthe resources and management training to fully deliver on their missions. “There are so many talented people out there who want to work with youth and have the power to literally transform lives.Iwanttobuildorganizationsthatwillfacilitate their work instead of obstruct it, so we can help all of our kids live up to their potential.”
Rachel Alexander (MBA’13)Public & Nonprofit ManagementSan Francisco, California
Annemarie came to Boston University from Germany, where she had been working to help China become more energy efficient and green, specifically with regard to food products, while at the same time running her own consulting business focused on servicing food companies. She chose to attend BU because it gave her the opportunity to receive two degrees, an MBA and an MS in information systems (all in 21 months), while also pursuing her other passion: entrepreneurship. “BU provides a great experience to learn key skills within both degrees.”
Annemarie DeCharles (MS·MBA’13)Information SystemsHamburg, Germany
Mike spent the seven years leading up to his MBA cofounding a family business in the Middle East, establishing offices in Dubai, UAE, and Doha, Qatar. He chose the One-Year International MBA because he wanted an accelerated program that would allow him to quickly return to the real world to launch a new venture. The experience of living in Beijing and Shanghai for three months was icing on the cake. “I’ve found that simply being able to talk about my experience living and learning in China has become a major advantage in doing business. The School isn’t just a great business school but also a great management program.”

After serving for the Commander, US Pacific Fleet in the US Navy, Patrick came to Boston University, recognizedthestrengthandsupportof the military network within the BU community, and saw an opportunity. Along with several other MBA students who shared similar backgrounds, he helped launch the Boston University Veterans Association. “The social and networking aspects of business school are equally important as the academic courses. Your classmates will become your colleagues and peers in the future, and establishing strong bonds in a social atmosphere is critical to developing a well-rounded professional network.”
Patrick Reilley (MBA’13)General ManagementHonolulu, Hawaii
With a neuroscience and premed background, and more than four years of experience in clinical sales, it was only natural for Morgan to apply to Boston University’s Health Sector MBA. “I feel as though it allowed me to put all my experiences together, build my skills, and position myself to have a wider impact.” In January 2012, she took advantage of the India Field Seminar trip, which allowed her to explore India and participate in site visits to experience technology and bio-pharma development, effective service delivery with limited resources, and witness the role of entrepreneurial initiative in complex environments, all firsthand.
Morgan Sessoms (MBA’13)Health Sector ManagementPeabody, Massachusetts
After working as a TV producer for several years, Phil saw that an MBA could set him apart. He says the BU dual degree MBA/MS in Media Ventures was a real differentiator. He liked the student diversity, the closeness of teamwork, and combining a broad business background with a deeper dive into the latest media technology and practices. “Starting with seed money won in a student competition, my partners and I cofounded Applified, Inc., and I’m now leading the development of its first product, a mobile app called Jaxx aimed at men and their groups of friends.”
