2010 ANNUAL REPORT

Creating what’s

Possible

Teamwork gets the job done.

After ten long years of working and playing together to raise money for a great cause, the Cancer Shootout Committee decided that the 10th Anniversary Event of 2010 would be the final chapter in a very rewarding story. (A final “Wrap Party” was held in March 2011.) For ten years, all proceeds benefited the St. Luke’s Foundation Cancer Shootout Breast Cancer Research Fund that supports local breast cancer research through clinical trials at St. Luke’s in partnership with bench research at UMD.

The Cancer Shootout Committee was the recipient of St. Luke’s Foundation Circle of Light “Friend” Award. Ken and Briana Johnson accepted the award on behalf of the committee at the Circle of Light event on September 10, 2010.

Dr. Michael Huska, an annual event participant, checks in on a patient who is monitored by one of the new cardiac telemetry machines, funded

by proceeds from the House of Hearts Celebrity Bonspiel.

In March of 2010, the House of Hearts Celebrity Bonspiel celebrated its ninth anniversary. This charity event, which brings together participants and celebrity skips from across the globe, helps to provide valuable resources for St. Luke’s patients.

“We started with eleven teams the first year, and now it’s anywhere from 24 to 32 teams that participate,” said Amy Wright, who is co-chair of the event with her husband, Tim Wright. Amy and Tim have both won national championships and apply their competitive spirit to the enhancement of patient care at St. Luke’s. The event most recently funded cardiac telemetry equipment for the Cardiac Rehab department. The

telemetry system allows rehab staff the ability to monitor several patients from a single computer screen. This gift is certainly an accomplishment for the House of Hearts team and one that truly impacts patient care.

“We can see where the money we raise is going, and we really feel as if we are accomplishing something,” added Tim. “It is truly the strengths and talents of our committee members and the generous sponsors who come together that make the House of Hearts so successful – both in terms of fun and funds raised.”

Just as it takes a village to raise a child, it takes the right

team to achieve successful outcomes. This is true in so many

situations. It’s the team of medical professionals treating the

health of one person. It’s the team of lab personnel working

together and sharing knowledge for an important research

project. It’s the team of volunteers and employees who

together create the caring, family feel of St. Luke’s.

It’s the donors who together gave a record amount in 2010,

enabling St. Luke’s Foundation to fund important pediatric

initiatives for our region’s youngest residents. Individuals can

do many good things, but when assembled as a team, they

can accomplish so much more.

In 2010, St. Luke’s Foundation was able to continue

the growth in donations that has been experienced over the

last six years. You came together and responded, yet again,

to provide the support that allows us to invest in patient care,

health education and clinical research for the people

of our region.

Assembling the people, talent, and resources for the health of our

community

The convergence of

compassion and care

Engaging with

community.

St. Luke’s has been Scott Lyon’s family’s hospital since the early 1900s. His grandparents, parents, he and his siblings, and his children were all born there. It’s where they have always turned for hospital care. And it’s where his parents, Reynold and Alice Lyons, (pictured right), and other family members have been cared for by St. Luke’s Hospice and Home Care.

Scott believes that Hospice is a sacred place and an area that should always be at the forefront in defining the mission of St. Luke’s. People (along with

their families) must have a place to die with dignity and respect, whatever the cost. So when asked to become a Board

Member, it was an easy decision to say yes.

“It gives me a chance to tell others that there is no better place to seek medical assistance. The old time, ‘local hospital’ atmosphere needs to be maintained even as health technologies advance,” said Scott.

St. Luke’s volunteer, Sheila Hanson, spends time reading with Mary.

New St. Luke’s Foundation Board Member Edwin Hall saw first-hand the results made possible by the Foundation. His mother-in-law, Mary, is a St. Luke’s Hospice and Home Care patient. Ed was so taken with the care she receives, that he stepped up to become a Foundation board member.

Ed and Sherry Hall are relative newcomers to Duluth. After a career in our nation’s capital, the Halls wanted to move closer to Sherry’s mother, Mary, and their children in the midwest. While visiting, they fell in love with the area and have made Duluth their home.

“I was so impressed with Hospice, with the doctors, and with the entire hospital structure,” said Ed. “St. Luke’s is moving in the right direction, bringing in great physicians, and expanding programs – I want to be able to help impact these positive advancements.”

“My mother has received such excellent care,” Sherry said. “Giving back is the least we can do.”

Walking together for our

health.

The McKissack Nursing Scholarship was established in 1998 in the memory of Gladys Eklund McKissack, a 1942 graduate of St. Luke’s School of Nursing. Her husband, Colonel Ray F. McKissack, USAF Retired, created the scholarship. The annual scholarship helps current St. Luke’s employees finance their education in pursuit of their nursing career goals. Colonel McKissack passed away on September 19, 2010. Their children, Bill, Brian and Marilyn, will continue

to support the scholarship in honor of their parents.

Laurie Wegner Burns, an Emergency Room RN at St. Luke’s, is the 2010 recipient of the McKissack Nursing Scholarship. Laurie has been with St. Luke’s since 2002, and has two semesters to go in her pursuit of an advanced practice degree as a Family Nurse Practitioner.

“I am truly grateful to the Foundation, and to the McKissack family, for this important

scholarship,” Laurie said. “The McKissack scholarship is allowing me to achieve both my education goal and my career goal to better serve St. Luke’s patients.”

Sharing the gift of education.

Imagine a candle-lit path along a lakeshore. Imagine a bagpiper leading cancer survivors around that path. Imagine teams that walk together for 12 hours. What you’re seeing is the Sand Lake Shuffle, an all-night cancer walk held annually at Voyageur’s Sand Lake Resort in Britt, MN. And, in 2010, the event celebrated its 20th anniversary. Joe Matanich is one of the organizers of the event, and has been involved for ten years. “It’s all worth it when we hear how this event can help cancer patients, and impact their lives,” said Joe. “Here’s a testimonial from one of those patients:”

I was 26 and 22 weeks pregnant when I was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. I had to start treatment right away, and stay in the hospital until my baby was born at 36 weeks. My husband drove to see me, an hour each way. We were financially and emotionally exhausted. We were helped with an

exceptionally large gas card. And that year my friends and family bought luminaries in my honor at the Sand Lake Shuffle. It meant a lot to me that people were

celebrating my life and helping me fight. The next summer I started participating in the Shuffle. I think it is one of the greatest events: It gives back to the community and helps bring back hope. I am now an RN in Oncology and my son is five years old, and my daughter is three.

The greatest share of the proceeds are given to organizations that support cancer patients and their families in North Central St. Louis County. In addition, the Foundation and the Whiteside Institute for Clinical Research are recipients of a gift that enables us to continue our mission to advance cancer research through the Sand Lake Shuffle Cancer Research Fund – bringing hope to our region.

The community education program, “Strength, Hope and Courage: Living with Breast Cancer” was October 5 as part of St. Luke’s 13th Annual Breast Cancer Update. It was sponsored by Como Oil/Project Pink.

The program featured TV and film actress Marcia Strassman, a stage IV breast cancer survivor. She is best known for her leading roles in the 1970s sitcom Welcome Back Kotter (as Julie Kotter) and the film Honey, I Shrunk the Kids. Strassman and John Heino, President and CEO Como Oil, are pictured above.

Fundraising events:

For some, it’s to provide a tribute

to a loved one. For others, it’s a

strong commitment to overcoming

a health issue. Every donor has his

or her own reasons for supporting

St. Luke’s Foundation, and whatever

the motivation, we are touched by

their generosity. We find it especially

heartwarming to witness the passion

and commitment our friends put into

fundraising events that hold special

meaning for them. Here is a look at

the fundraising events of 2010.

Our signature event, the Circle of Light, is a celebration of health care excellence at St. Luke’s. Funds are raised each year through dinner, auctions and sponsorships. In 2010, we dedicated those funds in support of pediatric initiatives, including a hospital nursery isolation room, child-friendly updates at St. Luke’s Urgent Care Clinics, and other pediatric-related projects throughout the health care system. Additionally, we recognized outstanding supporters in three categories - Physician, Employee and Friend:

Susan Goltz, MDNorthland OB/GYN AssociatesMargaret Beattie, St. Luke’s Information Technology DepartmentCancer Shootout Steering Committee Ken and Brianna Johnson, Co-chairs.

A group of friends started the Cancer Shootout in 2001 as a way to support a friend, Liz Taylor, in her fight against breast cancer. Since 2002, it has been held in her memory and proceeds fund cancer-related programs at St. Luke’s. The 10th and final Shootout took place in 2010.

Our oldest fundraising event, the Benefit Tournament, has been a tradition since 1983. This golf, croquet, tennis, and bridge tournament is held each July at Northland Country Club and raises money for our unrestricted grants program.

St. Luke’s cancer patients have benefited from a partnership between St. Luke’s Foundation, UMD Women’s Athletics, and UMD Stores. The UMD women’s volleyball, basketball and softball teams each designate one game during their season to raise awareness of breast cancer and raise funds for the St. Luke’s Foundation Cancer Care Fund and St. Luke’s Breast Center through the sale of special game day t-shirts and a silent auction. Additionally, a portion of the year-long sale of pink caps, t-shirts and hockey jerseys in UMD Stores benefits the fund.

connecting creativity, generosity and fun

Each year, the House of Hearts Celebrity Bonspiel tournament brings an abundance of goodwill and generous proceeds for our cardiac and cancer patients.

The Touched by Breast Cancer Golf Classic first held in 2002, takes place each June at Nemadji Golf Course in Superior supporting St. Luke’s Breast Center.

The Sand Lake Shuffle, an all-night cancer walk featuring a spaghetti feed and survivors’ ceremony, is held annually at Voyageur’s Sand

Lake Resort in Britt. Proceeds support St. Luke’s Foundation and Whiteside Institute for Clinical Research’s Sand Lake Shuffle Cancer Research Fund.

Each year the Superior Chapter of the Red Hat Society, also known as the Red Hat Red Hot Mamas Chapter #39569, sponsors a fall golf outing. “Queen Mom” Ruth Dalbac and her co-chairs organize a nine-hole women’s scramble with proceeds aiding local cancer patients with wigs and other personal care items.

Bowling to Beat Breast Cancer is organized each year by breast cancer survivor Barb Hoag. The tournament raises money to purchase “Chicken Soup for the Breast Cancer

Survivor’s Soul” books, given to St. Luke’s Breast Center patients.

The Pink Tie cocktail and hors d’oeuvres party takes place at Black Water Lounge as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The annual Women Rock event is a day dedicated to education, pampering and fun, with money raised benefiting women fighting breast cancer through St. Luke’s Breast Center.

Tracy’s Night is held in memory of Tracy Wright-Sperling, a young Solon Springs teacher, wife and mother who lost her fight with breast cancer. Her friends and family gather for a special evening to raise money for breast cancer awareness and to benefit the patients served through St. Luke’s Breast Center.

The staff at Younkers Hair & Nail Salon volunteered their time for a full day for Cuts for a Cure, providing hair cuts, manicures, pedicures and facials. All proceeds benefitted St. Luke’s Breast Center.

St. Luke’s Foundation is proud to present the following individuals, businesses and families and thank them for their continued contributions, touching our community for more than ten years.

Each year the St. Luke’s Foundation’s unrestricted grants program benefits from the generosity of St. Luke’s employees during the annual Employee Campaign. The 2010 campaign, “The Biggest Winner,” had a goal of $175,000 and employees responded enthusiastically. Pledges surpassed the goal, totaling $178,655, and thereby making our patients THE BIGGEST WINNERS!

In keeping with the fitness theme, employee incentive gifts included water bottles, sport packs, runners’ hats, and yoga/exercise balls.

Dear Friends:Creating What’s Possible……

This annual report provides a glimpse of the possible because of your philanthropy at St. Luke’s Foundation. Insight into the people,

the talent and the philanthropic resources enhancing the health of the communities we serve, we understand how the circle of symbiotic

care only grows along with our potential.

Through patient care initiatives such as the cardiac Telemetry System in the Cardiac Rehab department, health education opportunities

such as the Gladys Eklund McKissack Scholarship and clinical research such as the Sand Lake Shuffle Cancer Research Fund,

what is possible becomes what is.

Without you, our circle is incomplete. Through your financial support and advocacy, you help fulfill an essential part of the possible.

Every day you help us bring new medical technology, pathways and hope to the people we serve throughout our region. When we focus on

what we can accomplish together, the possibilities are endless.

“Start by doing what’s necessary; then do what’s possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible.”

St. Francis of Assisi

Many Ways to Give

outright GiftsOften the easiest to arrange, many donors support us through gifts of cash, checks, credit cards (VISA / MasterCard), securities or stocks, real estate and in-kind gifts.

Life-Income GiftsOne of the following trust options may be the best fit for you:

• Charitable Remainder Annuity Trust: A trust that pays you a set income annually.

• Charitable Remainder Unitrust: A trust that pays a fixed percentage of the trust’s assets.

• Charitable Lead Trust: A trust that pays a fixed or variable income to St. Luke’s Foundation for a set term, and then passes to heirs.

Life Insurance Name St. Luke’s Foundation as the beneficiary for income tax deductions.

Retirement PlanName St. Luke’s as the beneficiary of the remainder of the assets after your lifetime, avoiding a heavily taxed gift to heirs.

Retained Life estateDesignate the ownership of your home to St. Luke’s while you retain occupancy.

Bequests in WillsPlease tell us if you have named St. Luke’s Foundation in your will. We would love the opportunity to share our appreciation. Sample bequest language for St. Luke’s Foundation:

“I, (name) give, devise and bequeath to St. Luke’s Foundation (written amount or percentage of the estate or description of property) for its unrestricted (without conditions attached) use and purpose.”

If you want to restrict your bequest, please consult with St. Luke’s Foundation when you make your will to be certain your intent can be accomplished.

GiftCalcs Planner

Giving on-line is easy. Visit www.slhduluth.com and click on the Foundation link. In addition to our online giving form, you’ll find our GiftCalcs Planner – an interactive tool that lets you run sample gift calculations and their financial benefits to you.

Coming together to give is crucial to St. Luke’s Foundation and its mission. All gifts, no matter the size or method of giving, contribute to advancing our reach. Gift-giving options are listed for your consideration.

Trinky Pollard Jarrett has been connected with St. Luke’s since before she was born, and has honored that connection by remembering St. Luke’s Foundation in her estate plans.

“I have been very blessed in life, and I count among those blessings my connection with St. Luke’s. The hospital was built where my grandfather’s blacksmith shop once stood. I was born in delivery room #1. St. Luke’s gave me the finest in nursing education. My late husband practiced at St. Luke’s for almost 40 years. And our children and granddaughter were born there.

“St. Luke’s Foundation helps make it possible for the hospital to be a beacon to those in need of exceptional medical care and a safe harbor for families in time of need. I encourage you to think about what is possible, and how making a bequest to the Foundation will help to continue this great work for generations to come.”
