What is an infographic?

An infographic is a form of graphic design used to represent large amounts of

information both efficiently and effectively (“What is an infographic?”, n.d.).

According to Kolowich (2014), our brains are better tuned to understanding graphic

representations as opposed to text because there is less work involved.

90% of information transmitted to the brain is visual

Visuals are processed 60,000 times faster in the brain than text

40% of people will respond better to visual information than plain text

How do we create an infographic?

Making your first Infographic with PowerPoint

Open PowerPoint

Click on the Design tab

In the Customize group choose Slide Size

Select the slide size.

After you select slide size, choose “Custom” under “Slides Sized for:”

On the right choose “Portrait” for slides.

Change the height to 15. Select “OK”

Choose “Maximize”

Select Theme

Click the Design tab

Choose the Frame theme

Insert Infographic Title

Select the Insert Tab

Choose Word Art in the Text Group

Select a style

Type “Ergonomics”

Position Word Art in top portion of slide

Find Clip Art

Click the Insert tab

Choose Online Pictures

Type “Person Sitting”

Make sure “Creative Commons Only” is highlighted

Choose the person sitting graphic

Insert and adjust clip art

Select clip art

In the Format tab in the size group change the height to 5”

Move clip art to where you want it on the poster

In the Format tab select Color and select an appropriate color

Add a desk and a computer

In the Insert tab select Shapes

Choose the Rectangle

Using several rectangles

Create a desk

Create a computer

Create a keyboard

Add text and charts

Insert Online Picture

Type “Carpal Tunnel Chart”

In the Format tab choose Color

Choose Set Transparent Color

Click on the White portion of the chart

Position on Infographic

Add Text

Click on Insert tab

Choose Shapes

Select Oval Callout

Insert text and position on infographic

Add Text

Add more text using

text boxes

Add references

Save as PDF

Click on File tab

Choose Save As

Select location to save

In Save File As choose PDF
