Summer 2019 Creating Profit for Commercial Cattle Producers The values that Fred and Eudell taught us shape our goals at FSC Ranch to ADD VALUE to others by focusing on the following question: What can FSC Ranch do that will best equip our customers to have enduring success through a profitable and sustainable cattle business? We believe major changes are necessary for a cattle industry that is becoming more competitive and more volatile every day. Therefore, our vision is to create a VALUE-ADDED SYSTEM that focuses on three areas to meet these challenges and to serve and equip our customers in this new environment with a realistic competitive strategy. While there are details and execution challenges with any business strategy, we seek to provide a positive answer to three questions customers ask their seedstock provider: 1- Do you care for me? 2- Can I trust you? 3- Can you help me? In this newsletter, we will unfold the three areas of our VALUE-ADDED SYSTEM: 1- To sponsor an EDUCATIONAL FORUM that provides our customers with the most up-to-date information to improve everyday practices on the farm to help customers be more sustainable and profitable. See Page 2 for more information about Dr. Bob Weaber, a nationally recognized Professor/Extension Specialist at Kansas State University in the area of Beef Breeding and Genetics. He will present the latest information on “Crossbreeding - A Cattleman’s Free Ride.” 2- Dedication to produce genetically designed cattle that grade on the rail and can be retained as maternal replacements - we call them EVERGREEN CATTLE. The key to producing EVERGREEN CATTLE is to make genetic progress by using sires that are BALANCED for EPDs and Indexes that have the largest economic impact on our customers’ breeding programs. We are excited to introduce IR CAPITALIST E-041 to you on Page 3 who, in our opinion, was the Number 1 Non-Parent SimAngus™ bull sold last year. 3- FSC Ranch has teamed up with Allied Feeding Partners (AFP) to create the FSC BUY-FEED PROGRAM. This program is designed to help you get ADDED VALUE for your FSC Ranch sired genetics by increasing the money you receive for your feeder calves and providing real-world data to help you manage your cattle operations for optimal profitability. What can FSC Ranch do that will best equip our customers to have enduring success through a profitable and sustainable cattle business?

We believe major changes are necessary for a cattle industry that is becoming more competitive and more volatile every day. Therefore, our vision is to create a VALUE-ADDED SYSTEM that focuses on three areas to meet these challenges and to serve and equip our customers in this new environment with a realistic competitive strategy. While there are details and execution challenges with any business strategy, we seek to provide a positive answer to three questions customers ask their seedstock provider:

  • Adding Value to Your bottom line

We are joining Allied Feeding Partners (AFP) to increase value to our commercial bull customers by helping you increase the money you receive for your feeder calves as you capture essential data from your cattle sired by FSC Ranch bulls.

Through the use of FSC Ranch genetics, you have access to the AFP program. You will get real-world data to show you how your calves perform, which will help you manage your operations for optimal profitability. The FSC Ranch is committed to ensuring the success of our bull customers by investing in AFP and providing customers with valuable data on how cattle perform after they leave their ranch. That data can then be used to make better decisions for buying bulls, in-herd management, and marketing leverage in the years to come.

Through AFP’s partnership with Darr Feedlot, in Cozad, Nebraska, we will feed the cattle and collect data through

the rail, enabling us to share important information with our commercial bull customers.

In our data collection, we are committing to individual animal ID and DNA samples to confirm the parentage of the calves to their sires, and if the customers’ records allow, we can verify back to the individual cow in their herd.

Clint Berry, representing Superior Livestock Auction and Allied Genetic Resources, adds, “By sharing overall health, conversion, and individual carcass results, our customers can utilize data to make culling decisions within their herd and quantify the genetics they have invested in their bulls.”

All the data collected will be shared with the National Genetic Evaluation database to increase the accuracy of the FSC Ranch seedstock helping our bull customers maximize revenue. If you would like to participate in Allied Feeding Partners, please contact Clint Berry at (417) 844-1009, [email protected], or Fred Smith at (919) 422-4092, [email protected].

Please join us on Friday, October 25, 2019, for dinner and social hour at the FSC Ranch beginning at 5 PM.

After dinner, Dr. Bob Weaber will give a talk on "Crossbreeding - A Cattleman’s Free Ride." His presentation will cover how to make simple, structured, sustainable, and prosperous decisions when crossbreeding your herd. The key value drivers he will discuss are managed heterosis, simple breeding systems, and complementarity.

Dr. Weaber holds a BS in Animal Science, and a Master of Agriculture degree in the Beef Industry Leadership Program at Colorado State University. He completed his doctoral studies

in the Animal Breeding and Genetics Group at Cornell University. He served as the Interim Director of Performance Programs for the American Simmental Association, was Director of Education and Research at the American Gelbvieh Association, and served on the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association Policy Division Board of Directors.

Currently, Dr. Weaber serves as Central Regional Secretary of the Beef Improvement Federation. He is also co-coordinator of the National Beef Cattle Evaluation Consortium education programs and serves as a consultant for several breed associations and beef cattle genomics companies.

He will be happy to answer questions after his talk.

We hope you’ll join us for this wonderful evening filled with food, friendship and valuable information to help grow your cattle operations.

Adding Value and Impact on the Cattle Business through Genetic Progress. The Evergreen future at FSC Ranch is IR Capitalist E041 (ASA # 3344847).

Our priority is to breed bulls that are balanced and work in all seasons for our customers. We focus on five EPD traits and two index traits for the following reasons:

How are we reaching our goal to produce Evergreen Cattle

    IR Capitalist E041 (ASA # 3344847)

    1. Calving Ease Direct EPD (CE): It all begins with a live calf that does not require assistance and does not impose undue strain on the calf or dam.

    3. Yearling Weight EPD (YW): This highly heritable trait offers individual genetic growth potential for increased efficiency in the feedlot.

    5. Marbling EPD (MARB): Consumers are demanding more high-quality beef options, and marbling matters and increases return to the cattleman.

    7. Terminal Index (TI): Terminal index measures the expected average performance of progeny including the growth and carcass of Sim genetic bulls used on a cowherd, with all offspring placed in the feedlot and sold grade and yield.

Capitalist is one of the highest SimAngus™ bulls in the breed for overall genetic merit and who can sire both profitable breeders and productive females. Bred Heifers will be offered at our Fall Sale with the first Capitalist sired calves to be offered for sale.

    2. Weaning Weight EPD (WW): We believe most of our customers market their calves at weaning time where they are sold by the pound, so we emphasize this growth trait.

    4. Stayability EPD (STAY): The greater stayability that a sire’s daughters have to remain in the herd over six years equals fewer replacement heifers. Females that stay in the herd reduce replacement rates.

    6. All-Purpose Index (API): API measures the expected performance of progeny of Sim genetic bulls used on the cowherd, with a portion of the daughters retained for breeding and selling the remaining progeny.
