We have developed a new real-time weather observation technology that integrates traditional sensors (radar, satellite and weather stations) with information from mobile telephone networks.
Through the proprietary solution ENTROPY we monitor and optimize mobile phone networks in real time. The analysis of the large volume of information and KPIs collected allows us, using Deep Learning algorithms, to resolve the state of the atmosphere with great accuracy.
The new meteorological observations, in addition to being in real time, increase the current measurement points by orders of magnitude (around a factor of 200 for urban environments), providing observations with a reliability greater than 90%, and a much higher spatio-temporal coverage and resolution.
OBSERVATIONNON-CONVENTIONALOBSERVATIONS (2)
To obtain rainfall estimates from the transmission network (MW links), we analyze the key performance indicators (KPIs) of all network elements through algorithms that process the transmitted and received signal level. We analyze and identify all sources of variation in the signal level, among which there is precipitation. This allows to estimate the rainfall intensity averaged over the distance between two microwave links, leading to an additional observation point.
From a network of microwave links, and combining the inferred measurements with those obtained from the meteorological radar and rain gauges, we obtain a rainfall field with greater coverage and spatial and temporal resolution.

ECOGUARDAS - WDNA
FIGUREExample of validationof our technology. Blue bars show the rainfall observed by a rain gauge in Mexico City (gray bars indicate time periods in which the station was not operative). Red dots show the estimated rainfall from the telecommunications network.
NOWCASTING BASED ONOBSERVATIONS(DETERMINISTIC)
Weather radar observations are ideal as a tool in the implementation of very short-term precipitation forecasting or nowcasting techniques. These techniques extrapolate the rain field observed by the radar, assuming that during a short period of forecast time, the temporal evolution of the precipitation field can be extracted from the recent past.
At WDNA we develop and implement the latest nowcasting techniques. In addition, we complement radar observations with non-conventional observations, providing the algorithm with a starting observed precipitation field of higher spatial and temporal resolution. We generate 0-6 hours forecasts at a spatial resolution of 100 m to 1 km that are updated every 1-10 min, depending on the available observations.
FIGUREComparison between the observed rain field and a 1-hour forecast obtained with nowcasting based on radar.
NOWCASTING FROM AMETEOROLOGICALMODEL
At WDNA we are developing a nowcasting method generated from our high-resolution meteorological model. It is a very short-term forecast (0-3 h) that is updated periodically (every 10 min) with resolution of 1 km. The method assimilates the most recent observed data, obtained from weather stations and the meteorological radar.

NOWCASTING(PROBABILISTIC)
The very short-term rainfall forecast based on the extrapolation of the radar precipitation field (deterministic technique) is subject to several sources of uncertainty that must be taken into account.
It is known with certainty that a storm will develop somewhere, but it is unknown what will its exact position be in time and space. Including a probabilistic approach to rainfall forecasts allows to characterize the different sources of uncertainty.
In this case, instead of forecasting a precipitation intensity value for each point in the domain, we calculate the probability of obtaining said rainfall intensity.

FORECASTSMETEOROLOGICALMODEL
Our weather forecasts are generated employing the Weather Research Forecasting Model (WRF), a numerical model that implements a wide range of meteorological applications on scales ranging from meters to thousands of kilometers.
This model has multiple configuration options in terms of its dynamic and physical behavior, which allows it to adapt to any weather conditions.
We generate regional real-time forecast using WRF at a 4-km resolution. This model allows to obtain precise predictions with up to 3-days forecast. It also allows to run subdomains in any area of the planet with a resolution of up to 300 meters.
In addition, we use a lower spatial resolution model (25 km) GFS (Global Forecast System), which provides grid point forecasts of a greater temporal range of up to 7 days.
WEATHER FORECASTSENERGYGENERATION
We use our own forecasts employing traditional Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) models to forecast energy generation. We correct forecasts hourly based on recent observations.
At the short-term scale, we employ our own developed nowcasting techniques based on NWP models to improve intraday forecasts for the electricity market. These techniques assimilate weather radar extrapolation and on-site observations.
We are conducting several R&D projects that aim to collect additional weather observations, which we feed to our models to improve forecast results for the day-ahead and intraday markets.
Service features:
→ We optimize and adaptweather model run times to market sessions closing times
→ We optimize forecasts for the intraday market with nowcasting techniques
→ We assimilate a wide rangeof observations in the models
→ We work with energy generationhistory to optimize forecasts
CLIMATEPROJECTIONS
At WDNA we generate our own Climate Change simulations based on the greenhouse gas emission scenarios (RCPs) established in the Fifth Assessment Report (AR5) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), and taking into account the approximate calculation of radiative forcing as well as different socio-economic scenarios.
When it comes to making projections of future climate trends, General Circulation Models (GCMs) are a fundamental tool. Although Climate Change is a problem of global causes and consequences, its impacts are also manifested locally, so it is essential to predict future climatic conditions at a regional level. At these scales the
spatial resolution of the GCMs is insufficient. Therefore to increase spatial resolution it is necessary to employ downscaling techniques.
At WDNA we apply a statistical downscaling based on the Quantile to Quantile method to detect the impacts of climate change on local variability. This method,is endorsed by several publications in prestigious international journals and allows to include the local climatic characteristics in the global climate simulations, correcting and adapting them to the local scale.

3D SolidStateAnemometer
PRODUCTHot wire thermal anemometer, solid state, without moving parts, very low cost and which is able to record wind data, both in the horizontal plane and the vertical component very accurately and in real time.
To obtain the three-dimensional measurements, multiple sensors of the NTC type are used, where one of them measures the wind speed and the rest measure wind direction. They are complemented by other sensors that provide additional information on temperature and humidity, which are useful for the prediction of thermal turbulence.
