Creation

A long, long time ago, there wasn’t anything around but God.

There wasn’t any earth, or sun, or people, or even light.

Everything was dark. God decided to create light first. All God

had to do was say, “Let there be light,” and suddenly, there was

light. Then God decided to divide the light and the darkness, so

there was evening and morning. That was the first day.

God had plans for the second day, too. He said there should be

a sky, and because God is God, a sky appeared. That evening

and morning were the second day.

On the third day, God decided to make land. Up until now, there

was only light, darkness, water, and sky. God spoke, and land

appeared. God also said there should be seeds in the plants He

had made so they would grow other plants just like themselves.

On the fourth day, God said there should be a sun, a moon, and

stars. He also divided one year into four seasons—spring,

summer, fall, and winter.

On the fifth day, God created a lot of things. He decided to

create all the animals in the sky and all the animals in the sea.

On the sixth day, God finished making everything. He made all

the animals on the land—everything that lives on earth. Then God

made something very special—He made man. Up until now, when

God wanted to create something, He just said the words, but He

made man in an extra-special way. He took dust and formed a

human being out of it and then breathed life into him. God

called this man Adam.

On the seventh day, God rested. He didn’t rest because He was

tired. God doesn’t get tired. He rested because He saw

everything He had made, and it was good. God was satisfied.

Adam and Eve

After God made Adam, He gave Adam a wonderful place to live

called the Garden of Eden. Everything was perfect in the

garden. There were no weeds, and all the animals were nice to

each other. God brought all the animals to Adam one at a time

for Adam to name them. God knew that Adam needed more

than the animals to make him happy, so God caused Adam to go

into a very deep sleep. He took one of Adam’s ribs and made it

into a woman. When Adam woke up, he found out God had

made a wonderful wife for him. Her name was Eve.

God had given Adam a rule. This rule said that he could eat

from any tree in the garden except one. It didn’t seem like a big

rule, but it was serious. God told Adam that the day he ate from

that tree, he would die. Eve knew this rule, too.

There was someone else around while all of this was going on.

There was God, Adam, Eve, and Satan, the devil. He hated God.

Satan had rebelled against God. He decided he didn’t want God

to tell him what to do. Satan wanted to spoil God’s wonderful

earth and the wonderful times God, Adam, and Eve were having.

He knew if he could get Adam and Eve to eat from that one

tree, it would ruin everything. He decided to try.

WriteBonnieRose.com 13

One day, while Eve was walking in the garden, someone spoke to

her. A serpent asked Eve, “Has God said you could not eat from

any tree in the garden?”

She told it they could eat the fruit from any of the trees except

the one in the middle of the garden. She said they couldn’t eat

the fruit or touch it, or they would die.

The serpent lied to her and said she wouldn’t really die. He told

her that God knew if she ate of the tree, she would become wise

like God and know the difference between good and evil. Satan

was using the serpent to try to make Eve think God wasn’t really

being good to her and Adam.

Eve moved closer to the tree and looked at the fruit. It looked

so good. She wanted to be wise. She had a decision to make—she

could obey God or obey God’s enemy, Satan. Eve took the fruit

from the tree. Then, she ate some of it! Next, she called Adam

over. Eve gave him some of the fruit and instead of obeying

God, Adam ate it.

Something awful had happened. Instead of listening to God,

they had done what He told them not to do. They had sinned,

and everything had changed. Adam and Eve felt guilty and were

afraid to meet God.

WriteBonnieRose.com 14

God came soon to talk to Adam and Eve. They were upset and

tried to hide. God called and said, “Adam, where are you?” God

knew where Adam was, but He wanted Adam to tell Him. God

knew Adam and Eve had sinned, but He wanted them to admit it.

He asked Adam, “Did you eat from the tree that I told you not

to eat from?”

Adam didn’t want to admit he had done wrong, so he said, “The

woman You gave me, she gave the fruit to me, and I ate it.”

God asked Eve, “What did you do?” Eve wanted to blame

someone else, so she said it was the serpent who tricked her.

God had to punish all three of them. He told the serpent that

now he would slither on the ground and most people would hate

him.

Then God talked directly to Satan, who had used the serpent to

lie to Adam and Eve. God told Satan that a woman would have a

Son. The Son would be God’s Son, Jesus Christ. God said Satan

would hurt Jesus, but Jesus would destroy Satan’s power.

God talked to Adam and Eve next. He told Eve that she would

have a lot of pain, especially when she had children. He also told

WriteBonnieRose.com 15

her that her husband would be in charge over her. He told Adam

that since he listened to Eve and ate the fruit, the ground would

grow weeds. It would take hard work to make the plants grow.

God knew if he allowed Adam and Eve to stay in the garden,

they would live forever. But their sin had separated them from

Him, and He couldn’t let them live forever without Him. He loved

them too much. The only way was to send them out of the

garden so He could one day send Jesus to bring everyone who

trusts Him back to God. God made clothes for Adam and Eve

out of animal skins and told them they had to leave the garden.

Then He put angels to stand guard so no one could get back in.
