Spring is in the air. Green grass. Flowers. Trees budding. Kids

are counting down the days left un-til schools out for the summer. A lot of you, you’re planning your fam-ily’s summer vacation. For us, we’re gearing up to get ready for festival season.

I can’t wait to be back at Creation festival this year. As Creation Festival has often said, “It may be the best time of your summer – maybe even the best time of your life.” What a blast and what a vacation – camp-ing, cook outs, volleyball, basketball, inflatables, food vendors, crafts, a kids tent and face painting. Then put on top of that all the entertainment for the whole family. It’s such an awesome vacation that’s centered around our faith.

What made summer vacation and family vacation even better was sharing it with someone else. No one told me I had to. No one told me it was my responsibility or my duty. I wanted to share the best thing in my life with my friends. I wanted to have a good time with them and to have

them experience what I experienced.

Can I say I wished everyone saw Creation festival like that? When you order your tickets, I want to encour-age you to ask everyone in your fam-ily if there’s one person they’d like to invite. If you already have your tick-ets, can I challenge you to still do the same thing and order a few more to give to someone you’d like to invite? I’ve even seen youth groups who collect money as part of their tithe to buy extra tickets to offer as a gift to others outside the group as an evangelistic outreach. What a bet-ter place for fun, memories, enter-tainment and bringing your friends along to experience what you’ve ex-perienced?

When your kids and their friends have the time of their lives, you can look at them and say, “Do you remember how much fun that was? The memo-ries we had? The night it rained? The stories we shared? Oh, and by the way, you fulfilled the great commis-sion.” They’ll look at you strangely and say, “What?”

You can smile and respond, “Yes, you fulfilled the last command that Christ gave to us while on this earth, to go and make disciples.

How did you do it? Through relation-ships. Community. Experience. Mu-sic.

And I promise you that when I’m there up on that stage that I will share the gospel and I will give the best message in the world – that Je-sus Christ loves you and longs to be your personal friend and savior. And I promise that those you invited will be given an opportunity to know the greatest joy they’ve ever had through a relationship with Jesus.

They’ll thank you. And just like you, think of the joy you’ll feel when you hear them say, “Wow, this was the best time of my summer, maybe even my life.” Let’s make memories together.

Announced initially to their fans, the celebrated band re-

vealed their final plans earlier this year before their highly success-ful “The 7 Tour.” Named among the “most thoughtful, progressive and exciting acts in contemporary Christian music” by The New York Times, the popular yet uncon-ventional David Crowder*Band finishes their career with an epic, triumphant collection of 34 songs that poetically illustrate that in death something new is reborn. The album showcases the band’s unique music style and touches on worship, pop, rock, bluegrass and electronic genres. I had the great opportunity to interview David Crowder about the album’s first single, “Let Me Feel You Shine.”

Please tell me the background story behind writing the song “Let Me Feel You Shine.”

I wrote this song on the tail end of the decision to end our time as a band; it put the period at the end of the sentence. I don’t think I have written as personal of a song as this one. For me, all of the experience of closing this chapter, of looking ahead and trusting, is in this song. I know all of us are in these mo-ments where life twists and turns, and you don’t see what’s coming, but you feel God’s leading and you have to jump out and take the risk and see what it means to be a per-son of faith. What I love about the whole arc of this thing that has

been David Crowder*Band and coming to a close is that on paper it makes no sense. Looking back on each release, each album has been stronger than the previous one, and culturally speaking it doesn’t make sense. You don’t quit when you’ve got momentum built.

And yet, with our faith, it’s an up-side down Kingdom. In that way it’s the norm. “The first will be last. The poor are rich. After death is life.” It’s all upside down and be-cause you breathe in culture and strive for success, what you breathe in and out your entire life isn’t to let go when things are going well. That’s what the song is about.

Did you base the song on any Bi-ble verses?

Genesis 22:9-14: When they reached the place God had told him about, Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it. He bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. Then he reached out his hand and took the knife to slay his son. But the angel of the LORD called out to him from heaven, ‘Abraham! Abra-ham!’ ‘Here I am,’ he replied. ‘Do not lay a hand on the boy,’ he said. ‘Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.’ Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram caught by its horns. He went over and took the ram and

sacrificed it as a burnt offering in-stead of his son. So Abraham called that place The LORD Will Provide. And to this day it is said, ‘On the mountain of the LORD it will be provided.’”

What’s the takeaway message for listeners about the song?

The second verse: “I lift the knife to the thing I love most, Praying You’ll come so I can have both” is about the moment that’s beauti-ful and intense and hard and you know that you don’t want to sacri-fice something, but you need to be obedient to the calling. There’s usu-ally a ram in the bush. That’s the beauty of the story, there’s some-thing good around the corner and you know God’s already beaten you to it. That part feels really great. I’m glad that the story goes like this, such a counter-cultural statement.

Success isn’t sales or performanc-es, but whether we’re in a living, breathing relationship with God and where he wants us. When you’re in that moment when you’re called to sacrifice and you’re obedi-ent and you still have that desper-ate hope that you’re doing the right thing, we’ve had comfort from our friends and families. When you’re called to sacrifice, Jesus tells us His Kingdom is upside down. In a per-sonal pronoun song like this one, it doesn’t reference community. Community allows us to hear the voice of God and trust Him.

Fervent Records’ Chris August proved why he is quickly becom-

ing a favorite in the genre at the 42nd Annual Dove Awards earning an im-pressive three awards. August cele-brates his first ever Dove Award wins with the prestigious “New Artist Of The Year” and “Male Vocalist of the Year.”

“I’m absolutely speechless,” shared August. “I am truly blessed to be able to make and share music. And then to receive this recognition is quite humbling.”

While he may be considered a “new” artist, singer-songwriter Chris Au-gust is anything but a rookie in the

music industry. The self-taught pia-nist, guitarist, and producer previ-ously toured as the keyboard player and opening act for pop sensation Ashlee Simpson before shifting his focus to his solo career. Chris, a na-tive of Dallas, put his refined skill set to work when he co-produced his de-but record with acclaimed producer Ed Cash.

While he is not one to shy away from writing about his faith, Chris isn’t afraid to embrace relationships and heartache in his songwriting. His current hit single, “Battle,” is the cur-rent single from Chris’ August 2010 debut GMA Dove Award winning “Pop/Contemporary Album of the

Year,” No Far Away.

I had the great opportunity to in-terview Chris in-person at Creation Northeast about his current single, “Battle.” Here are the answers to the questions I asked Chris.

Please tell me the background in writing the song “Battle.”

This song started where most good ideas start: in the shower. I was sitting there, well actually I was standing be-cause I was in the shower, and I was thinking about how each day I pray to God for focus. It hit me one day

CHRIS AUGUSTNRT’s Kevin Davis talks with Chris August about his song, “Battle”

Page 9: Creation Festivals May2012 eMag

that my words were wrong. I need to say, “Lord I accept Your focus.” That’s something He’s always giving us. It’s not something He starts and stops giving. We just have to choose to ac-cept God’s direction in our lives each day. That got me to stop and think about choosing to accept God’s fo-cus in our lives is a daily decision. We put pressure and rules on ourselves as Christians. Even just in life if you are trying to make moral decisions apart from following Christ, you have daily “battles.”

Did you base the song on any Bible verses?

Psalm 18:39: “You armed me with

strength for battle; you humbled my adversaries before me.”

... and Psalm 55:18: “He rescues me un-harmed from the battle waged against me, even though many oppose me.”

What’s the take-away message for listeners?

I need to fight the battles with what food I eat, how to spend money... and it hit me that the beauty of all of these battles we fight is that the war was al-ready won when Christ died for our sins on the Cross. At the end of the day, that’s what it’s about. Our human nature is that we have pride, and we hate when we mess up. The Bible tells

us we’ll all fall short of the glory of God. Character comes in when you repent and what you do after you mess up. My hope is that I can keep my focus on the war that was already won by Jesus Christ in my life.

That’s where healing comes from when we face those daily battles. I would love for people to experience that same healing when they listen to this song. Take the hope given to us by Jesus and know that the Cross was for people in the midst of sin. “While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Live for Him.

The OverseerThe dudes in The Overseer know how to have a good time. I’m sitting in a green room in Germany as Brad, the bass player, prepares to chunk a rock-hard loaf of bread out of a 4th story window. Those Germans seem to prefer their bread the same way Americans like their Chevys, so we’re about to test just how much “like a rock” this bread is. Brad is filling in on bass with my band Becoming The Archetype along with his Overseer drummer Abishai. I’m thinking of how much fun these guys are and how much it sucks that this is the last tour they’ll be able to do with us, because Solid State Records has finally listened up and realized how cool The Overseer is: they’re signing to become our labelmates as soon as the tour is over.

It was a long road for these four guys to get signed. Formed in 2007 and touring nearly nonstop since then, they had to perfect their sound and their energetic live show before they could live their dream of being a Solid State band. The band started with the same four dudes they have now and they’re as close as brothers. Hailing from the only part of Arkansas that isn’t the armpit of the country (the Northwestern part), Brad, Abishai, Darren (guitars) and Tony (vocals) are the most hilarious four guys this side (that side?) of the Mississippi.

Going to high school together and watching Razorback football together bonded them like brothers and it seems like the bond goes deeper than blood. This was obvious to Adam Skatula as he watched them

perform at LifeLight Fest in South Dakota last September. What Adam (Solid State A&R) saw blew him away, because the band had cemented into a cohesive, uber-tight metal band that was fun to watch, fun to listen to, fun to talk to. Says Adam, “They were just insane live. The amount of sound they put out and energy they created as a four piece was unreal.”

So finally they’re on their dream label and their gritty debut album comes out on June 19. It’s called We Search, We Dig and is appropriately titled, because these guys are gritty and real. You can tell they’ve dug into themselves to work as hard as they have for as long as they have. You can tell they’ve dug into each other to create the four-headed monster that they are. You just don’t get this legit without getting scrappy and real with one another.

We Search, We Dig was produced by Matt “The Sheriff of Tickle Town” McClellan at Glow in the Dark Studios in Atlanta. McClellan works at the studio beside renowned producer Matt Goldman and the two have churned out several great Christian metal albums in the last few years. The album’s production matches the gritty nature of the band, with organic distortion and drum sounds. The production is professional, though, so the band comes off as sounding like veterans who know how to make analog tones sound like

expensive, top-of-the-line production.

You’ll hear hints of the new Underoath sound here and there as well as some of the artistic side of Thrice and the Deftones. The band isn’t into copying current trends, but their influences do show through on the songs and since I happen to like their influences, the outcome is rather enjoyable. Darren happens to play organ and sing very well, so the band isn’t balls-to-the-wall heavy all the time and I appreciate that.

Keeping with their past habits, The Overseer will be touring nearly nonstop this year and next in support of the record, so if you want to see them live, it shouldn’t be difficult. If you are going to see them, do yourself a favor and pick up the album before you go so you know the words and can headbang in time. And if you don’t mind spending some time after the show, the guys are very approachable and would love hanging out to talk about spirituality (Abishai has “Religion is dead” written on his snare head) or college football (Brad has the Arkansas Razorbacks mascot tattooed on his thighs) or music gear (Darren plays through some sick pedals and an all-Orange full-stack) or having Jedi hair (Tony used to rock the padawan braid). These dudes will be sure to provide a great show every time and great albums for years to come, so pay attention now and be the first to see where Christian metal is going.

FOr King & COunTryWhat would this article have read like had the band answered the interview questions I emailed them? Perhaps we’ll never know, but maybe their press bio will offer a decent substitute. What do you think?

Carrying a name that evokes substance and a sense of purpose, for KING & COUNTRY make their debut with music that more than lives up to their clever moniker. Enveloping their insightful lyrics in a sea of ear-grabbing melodies, brothers Joel and Luke have forged a distinctive sound that has earned them an enthusiastic fan base as well as the respect of industry professionals who keep tapping their music for use in high profile TV shows. Together, Joel and Luke ignite each other’s individual passions to form a unique, distinctive voice that blends into simmering sibling harmony, unrivaled by any other collaborative group to date.

Born in Sydney, Australia and relocating with their family to Nashville, TN, Joel and Luke remember music being a constant presence in their life. Growing up in a large family of seven kids, the siblings began their creative experimentation early on, soaking up life experiences that would influence their musical future.

“Our father was a promoter in Australia and so we grew up as a musically-centered family. I remember going to these rock shows, sitting on his shoulders, plugging my ears. It was very influential at an early age and I saw the power of music and how a melody fused with a lyric can impact someone’s life,” recalls Joel. “Honestly, in a lot of ways I feel like music chose me and as I grew older, I made a clear decision to fully lean into it.”

The group’s strengths are showcased not only through their voices, but their name as well. The name, ‘for KING & COUNTRY,’ was decided on after several attempts to find a name that appropriately

encompasses who they are as musicians as well as their passionate personalities.

“While working on our debut record, I came up with the idea of calling us ‘All the Kings Men,’ but it just didn’t fit exactly with what we were looking for,” said Luke. “We were in the studio with our producer and he said, ‘what about for king and country?’ The history of that phrase is that back in the olden days, the British would go into battle shouting, chanting, ‘For King and Country,’ sort of as an anthem of fighting for something that they believed wholeheartedly in. We all looked at each other in the studio and we just knew that was it.”

With tracks produced by Shaun Shankel, Aqualung and Ben Glover, for KING & COUNTRY’s debut album, Crave, is a vibrant collection of songs, marked by emotional honesty and a riveting transparency. The first single, “Busted Heart (Hold On to Me)” is among the duo’s newer compositions and was inspired from a conversation on the brokenness that every person feels at some point in their life.

“There comes those defining moments in each of our lives where we so severely need someone to hold on to us,” explains Joel. “It seems we are all, in different ways, shapes and forms, busted to some degree. This song is an honest confessional of: ‘I can’t do this thing called life on my own. I need something, or more specifically, someone greater than myself to hold on to me.”

KING & COUNTRY’s music continues to gain momentum with fans and peers alike as several album tracks have already been featured in primetime television spots. “Love’s to Blame” and “People Change” have been featured on the popular The CW series, “The Vampire Diaries” and “Light It Up” and “Sane” have been heard on the Lifetime network’s “Drop Dead Diva.”

The song “Light It Up,” a tangible anthem for the group, was inspired by a friend of theirs who has had a long standing struggle with depression.

“For a time, our friend lived in a house where he would stuff blankets in the windows, switch off the lights and live for days at a time alone and in literal darkness,” says Luke. “We wrote this song for him, but for the longest time couldn’t work up the courage to tell him. Partly because it was his favorite tune and also because we were afraid of how he would handle it.”

When Joel and Luke finally worked up the courage to tell him, their friend stood up, walked out of the room, got in his car and drove off. Roughly 20 minutes passed until he called them up and with tears in his voice saying, “Thank you for writing that song for me. It moves me, encourages me, it gives me hope.”

Poignant stories and experiences like these are merely one of the many that spark for KING & COUNTRY’s underlying message and what ultimately drives both Joel and Luke in the authenticity behind their music and lyrics.

“We want to deliver a message that is about believing in something much bigger than oneself,” explains Luke. “The title track of the album has a line in the chorus that very plainly says, ‘hope is what we crave.’ You can confidently go through the ups and downs in your life because you know that life isn’t all about you and what you do but rather the hope and salvation of Christ.”

“We want to be known for writing music that is authentic, real and from the heart,” adds Joel. “Music has been a very therapeutic thing for us. There’s a lot of blood, sweat and tears that went into this record and what spurred us on is this whole idea that we can make a difference. That music, our music, can have the power to impact someone’s life for the better.”.

Candle lighting at Creation is truly a special time that min-isters to each person in a unique way. Starting back in 1983, this was the first of many special candle light eve-nings that can only be experienced at the Creation Festival. Set in the beautiful hills of western Pa, with no city lights and only the cool evening air, the bright stars of the milky way shines above as thousands of believers gather on a hill side to give tribute to our Creator.

THE EXPERIENCE

“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden....

Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”

For many, baptism this is the beginning of a new journey in life. Creation has always offered baptism and as

the old spiritual was sung:

“As I went down in the river to prayStudying about that good ol’ way

And who shall wear the starry crown?Good Lord show me the way

O sinners, let’s go downLet’s go down, come on down

O sinners, let’s go downDown in the river to pray...*

Baptism is about new life, life in Chirst. Creation Festival

presents the gospel clearly that you must die to sin

and become alive in Chirst.

This will bethe highlight

of your summer

maybe your LIFE!

“Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him....Even so consider yourselves also dead to

sin and your relation to it broken, but alive to God [living in unbroken fellowship with Him] in Christ Jesus.”

Romans 6: 8-11

Page 16: Creation Festivals May2012 eMag

Creation Festival has a banner that is flown high each year above the Main Stage that expresses what we desire to do throughout the time at the event which is to give “A Tribute To Our Creator” The Lord has done great things in our lives, He offers us Hope, Mercy, Grace, Salvation and most importantly, His Love. It is why we sing, and why we want to express the Joy of the Lord within us. Come and worship with thousands of common bond in Jesus this summer.

One question can change your life. Or maybe it’s best to say, your answer to a single question can change your life. When I was 14 the question was “Do you want to go to this festival called Creation?” Saying yes that summer has not only changed what I do the last week of June every year, but also influenced my career choice. That year was the first time I saw a sea of believers spread across the fields in tents and RV’s looking a bit like the 2 million Israelites following after God. A man named Harry Thomas stood on the main stage during the candle lighting and told us to remember the glow of the faithful when you feel alone. When it seems you are the only one among your peers who believes. The only one who is standing up for what is right. When you feel peer pressure to change. Remember. Some may falsely believe Creation is merely a concert. Creation is a family. Concerts are solo experiences. I’ve never gone to a concert, befriended someone sitting next to me, and remained friends for 10+ years even attending their wedding, baby showers, and the retirement party for their parents. There is diversity, energy, love, frustration, joy, and excitement. I’ve been inspired and challenged by fantastic spiritual leaders. Oh yes, and there is music.I return year after year because my work makes a difference. I’ve seen lives changed, bonds created, and spiritual walks deepened. As one member of the body of Christ, I can only do so much alone. When driving an artist to their hotel they were shocked to realize we took vacation time from our jobs to volunteer at the festival. He thanked me profusely. I accepted his thanks, but reminded him that his willingness to follow after God’s call in his life to pursue music allows me the opportunity to serve God by being a “Group Camping Supervisor” at Creation. I could show up and be ready to do my work, but if there was no one to perform, no one to speak, my efforts would be in vain. We all do our work for an audience of One, but what a joy to be doing that work surrounded in friendship and fellowship.Yesterday I was asked, ‘Are you going to Creation this year?’ and my answer remains the same. Has someone asked you yet? If you need to shake up your walk with God, if you need to feel loved and supported during a time of trial, if you want to goof off and have fun in an environment that is like none you’ve experienced, then I will ask you, “Are you going to Creation this year?” The answer will change your summer – and maybe even your life

CREATIONSTORYYOUR

Last summer I went to Creation Fest 2011. I wasn’t

really sure what to expect... I had heard a lot about

the event, people always described it as “Woodsto-

ck for the Christian set”, but it turned out to be so

much more than that.

As a third year college student, it is very easy to

get caught up in the stress of classes and rush

of social settings and even easier to forget the

important things in life. In this crazy world of

judgement and competition, I often found myself

feeling down about myself or looking down on others.

When arriving at Creation, I found myself immediately captured by the

event. The people, the sights, the music - everything was so amazing.

The atmosphere provided a complete opposite of college; people were

super friendly and accepting of complete strangers. It felt nice to rejoin

the Christian community.

What really hit home for me though was the evening worship time as

well as the various speakers. Creation helped me realize how lost I had

become. I was so focused on my social life and school that I completely

tuned out God and my role as His child. Creation helped me to re-accept

Him into my heart and life, and I vowed to try harder to keep Him there.

While it is still hard to balance school,

friends, a job and Church I still make sure

to find time to myself so that I can contin-

ue my ever growing relationship with God.

I am so excited to return to Creation 2012

this summer and hope that this experience

is even better than the last!

Two cots are included for this price. Addi-tional cots are available for $20 each (six cots max per tent). This is a great opportunity for families, youth groups and churches. Rental fees for tents are only $280 for the week of the festival.

We realize that while you love the outdoors, you also might not have the equipment or the ability to haul everything. To offer a solution to this dilemma, full size, roomy safari style tents will be set up on-site and available for rent for the duration of the festival. Tents are heavy-duty, with plenty of headroom and can sleep a maximum of six people. sleep a maximum of six people.

Creation Festival is located in Raystown Lake Region, which offers plenty of outdoor and indoor reasons to extend your Creation Staycation Getaway for a couple extra days.

Surrounded by the scenic backdrop of the Alleghenies of Pennsylvania, the Raystown Lake Region is filled with opportunities for hiking, bicycling and birdwatching, as well as boating and fishing on Raystown Lake. This 8,300 acre waterway draws boaters from all over the East and fishermen who come from far and wide to cast for the legendary stripers that swim the waters of the lake Field and Stream named one of America’s top fishing destinations. Overnight visi-tors can choose from friendly bed and breakfasts, comfortable vacation homes, or enjoy a truly memorable night under the stars in a fully equipped treehouse.

The Huntingdon County Visitors Bureau welcomes you to the Raystown Lake Region of The Al-leghenies in Pennsylvania. We trust that you will have a very pleasant stay while you enjoy and experience Creation! We invite you to explore the area during your time here.

If you come to relax, there are lots of spots to pull your boat into a sheltered cover of find a patch of sunlight to doze in amongst the trees. Contact information for boat rentals of houseboats, pontoon boats and fishing craft can be found at this link. The same marinas listed on the link offer daily sightseeing cruises as well, in case you want to kick back and let someone else drive while you enjoy the beautiful scenery around Raystown Lake. Trough Creek State Park is a short distance from Creation. You might want to visit there to see Rainbow Falls and

the massive Balanced Rock since you are so close. Hik-ing opportunities abound amongst the tall trees and along Trough Creek that winds through the state park. (Insider’s

tip: ask the park staff about the Ice Mine.)

The Allegrippis Trails are recognized as some of the top trails in North America. You might want to bring your mountain bike and try out some single track. Or paddle through historic canal waterways and the no wake zones on Raystown Lake. Rothrock Outfitters in downtown Huntingdon can help with information and bike/kayak rentals if you need them. (insider’s tip: The new VeeCee trail on the Allegrippis system connects the trails to the Raystown Lake Region Visitor Center for a short AC break during your afternoon ride. Ask Evan at Rothrock about suggested trail routes.)

There are many historic places and museums to visit if you wish to compliment your trip: Here is the link for locations close to Huntingdon like Isett Acres Museum, Swigart An-

tique Automobile Museum. You might also choose to check out the southern part of historic Huntingdon County with

an excursion at the Rockhill Trolley Museum, the East Broad Top Railroad or the Broad Top Area Coal Miners Museum and Historical Society in Robertsdale. (Insider’s tip: there are 40,000 items on display at Isett Acres Museum all ar-

ranged by era/category. Swigart Antique Auto Museum has an amazing collection of autos and memorabilia ranging from the first motor-powered vehicles through today. See

Herbie the Love Bug there! The Coal Miners Museum has a display that recreates a scene from an actual coal mine.)

There are always great things to do in the Raystown Lake of Pennsylvania dur-ing any season of the year. You can find a full list of all the upcoming events in Huntingdon County / Raystown Lake Region at this link.
