PROBLEM Many parts come packed loosely in bins or totes. Since
they are loose or their position is not fixed, traditional
automation has been unable to unload them, requiring an operator to
unload the parts manually with extensive back breaking labor.
SOLUTION 3D Bin Picking Technology, 3D camera systems integrated
with an industrial robot allow for the picking of loose parts out
the bin. All that would be then required of the operator is to
periodically exchange empty bins with full bins. The rest of the
time the operator will be free to perform other tasks.
The system works by using 3D vision modeling techniques, so that
the robot knows the angle the tool needs to achieve to pick the
part properly. It also sees how the part is situated in with the
other parts and then assigns a pick list and directs the robot arm
to then pick up the parts. The parts can then be placed on a
conveyor to feed them into a line or directly into a machine.
