What You Need:
• Leaves/ hoose #resh, lar"e, "reen leaves. In this pro0et, we used leaves #rom a )aple tree, a
"rape vine, a Bukeye tree, and a Lila $ush. *nly the maple tree leaves worked well1 the others
were not #irm enou"h to withstand the proess without tearin". The smaller and so#ter the lea#,
the less likely it is to work well in this e2periment.
• Sodium carbonate washin" soda4 &ou an order the needed small amount here, or $uy it in
lar"e 5uantity at the "roery store in the laundry aisle.

sodium ar$onate an irritate the eyes and skin, so wear the ru$$er "loves when immersin" your #in"ers in the
mi2ture, and dont touh your eyes.
8;. Use the #oreps to pik up one lea# and trans#er it to a oated paper plate. (are#ully spread out the
lea# so no parts are #olded over or underneath.
88. Use the so#t tooth$rush to are#ully $rush the "reen parts o# the lea#. Start where the stem attahes,
and use short, "entle $rush strokes to $rush the "reen lea# tissue toward the ends and outer ed"es o# the lea#.

8!. It is help#ul to oasionally pour the "reen "el o## the paper plate. &ou an rinse the paper plate i#
you are are#ul not to distur$ the lea#. %eep $rushin" until you have $rushed away as muh o# the lea# tissue as
possi$le. Be "entle and patient7
83. ill a up with $leah.
89. Use the #oreps to "ently trans#er the lea# #rom the shallow dish to the up o# $leah.

What Happened:
The part o# the lea# you an see now is a omple2 pattern o# hollow veins makin" up the lea#s skeleton. A lea#s
veinin" system provides #ood and water to the rest o# its ells. Sine the lea# is no lon"er "ettin" the nutrients it
needs #rom the "round throu"h the stem o# the plant or tree trunk, its tissue will $reak down easily. All that
remains is the deliate system o# veins that make a lay pattern7 Try #ramin" your lea# skeleton, or usin" it to
deorate a homemade ard.
