HOW DOES YOUR PRODUCT USE OR
CHALLENGE CONVENTIONS AND HOW
DOES IT REPRESENT SOCIAL GROUPS OR
ISSUES?
h
The movie opening that I have made has a mystery genre.
However, the title of my opening, 'Karma', does not give away the genre of the
movie opening.I in a way did and did not follow the
conventions of a mystery film. A mystery film normally begins
with a murder or a missing person, then the detective
looks for clues and solves the case.In my movie, I have also done the same which shows
that I have used the conventions as well. Also as per the costumes part, in a
mystery genre film, often the characters are shown dressed in normal clothing in order to create realism in the film. This is also done in order to make
the audience feel like they could
be in that situation increasing the fear felt by the audience. An
example of this could be that the female character is shown clad in a kurti which in a way highlights
the clothing of Pakistan. It therefore properly acts as a signal for the audience. Also costumes can also be used to indicate the
moral alignment of a character.Good characters wear light and bright colours whereas
bad and morally ambiguous characters wear dark colours. In
my case, the good character shown poisoned is wearing a light colour shirt. However, the other character helps bring a contrast because she is displayed in light clothing but she is anything but
good. Also, again a bad character which is the murderer is shown
dressed in dark clothing.
Also, I have used conventions like the ones
shown in shows like Castle, Scooby-doo and Pink Panther. The following
cartoons are the shows which have kept me
interested in this genre. Overall these shows have
inspired me in order to make this genre my choice
for my movie opening. Other than this,as per
conventions mystery films also contain weapons like a knife or a gun which is also
present in my movie opening.
I have used the conventions for this genre in case of the setting used which was to be an urban area and that is exactly what I have used, I have kept the setting a house hence its a way of telling the audience how they could be in the same place. Moreover, I have challenged the conventions also because in the beginning I have shown a sunny day, birds chirping can be heard. However if the conventions are taken into consideration then for the starting part often pathetic fallacy is used
for example, usiing a rainy day to show the murder or crime scene. Other than this, for the lighting, conventionally, low key lighting is used in a mystery genre film however, in my film opening I have challenged the conventions and presented my opening in high key lighting.
LOW KEY LIGHTING
HIGH KEY LIGHTING
The unique selling point of my movie opening is how there is a twist shown. Basically, the girl first poisons her boyfriend, and after that she gets a taste of her own medicine and gets murdered. Hence the name of the movie which means whatever you do come backs to you. Also,my movie opening in a way acts as a public service message for teens since it shows the consequences of an unlikely/unexpected situation something teens don't consider thinking about. I would prefer distibuting my product as a real media text through the internet by means of facebook, youtube, twitter and other
famous websites which would enable my movie to reach an audience interested in my particular genre. As per my research, I would have chosen Warner Brothers for my distribution considering this company has distributed mystery films like 'Inception' but then I realised that I may have made a great opening but it may not be up to their mark and even if I do distribute my movie to Warner Brothers, my
movie may not be liked by the majority of masses as they will be expecting a much better product when they would see the Warner Brothers logo. Also, considering my mystery is produced from a small budget and consists of amateur actors, involvement of Warner Brothers won't really be recommended.
HOW DID YOUR PRODUCTIONS
SKILLS DEVELOPE THROUGHT
THIS PROJECT?
When I took up this subject, I had no knowledge about the various camera shots or about the sound or lighting. However since the start I have been working on my camera skills and they have improved pretty much after i created this movie opening. This project basically gave me the opportunity of movie making. Also, it taught me the importance of the various camera angles and when to use which one. This project helped me in expanding my knowledge of production and equipment as well as the use of a dslr with and without a tripod as properly as I could.

The shooting part was really fun and interesting however I did struggle a bit with the editing part. I had to edit the video properly many times in order to get the proper results. Merging two or more camera angles together was something I found tricky. Also, searching for sounds was even hard therefore I ended up making a friend produce the sound where the boy is shown to be drinking in my movie.Adding the correct sounds for the scenes was what I had to keep on doing. The following task was to be considered a bit troublesome but in the end I managed.
I had many ideas regarding the making of my movie opening but I chose this one as I had to keep all the other things in mind like mis-en-scene, proper location, setting etc. Therefore I decided to pitch this particular idea to my camera and started off.My production skills have developed because I am able to highlight the errors in the different camera angles whenever I am watching a movie. I have learned the importance of 'headroom' in different camera angles as well since that was one thing I had to
keep a check on while shooting.I can also pinpoint the continuity errors and mistakes for example a patient is shown wearing makeup.
How Did You Integrate Technologies-Software,hardware and Online-In This Project?
For the making of my video I used Nikon D3100 along with a tripod. As per the part where the editing is concerned, I used Windows Live Movie Maker. I used Youtube as a source for my primary research so that I could look for different opening sequences for the film. Also, I used Slideshare to help me with the details of my genre. The advantage of using this camera was that it was easy to carry around and everything was being recorded onto its SD card through which i easily transferred the videos onto my laptop.
I used Windows Live Movie Maker because I have used it for making my previous videos as well therefore I found is easier to use for the editing of my movie. It allowed me to trim my videos as well as add proper sound to my video and make it better overall. It allowed me to merge different camera angles together without any issue as well.
