    Whenthe Pakistanearthquake

    struck in2005,teenagersMiriam

    andSidra barely escapedwith

    theirlives.

    Sidra remembers:Ourschool

    building collapsedwithme

    underneath.We lost lotsof

    people that day,including my

    baby cousin.

    But,helpedby the RedCross,

    the family have beenrebuilding

    theirlives andtheirhouse.

    Using bricksandironsheeting,

    the girlsfamily built a new,

    strongerhouse so they wouldbe

    dry andsafe throughthe winter.

    ForMiriam,hernewhome marks

    a newbeginning:Ourother

    house wasbuilt of mudbut this

    isa beautiful home.

    Indonesian families.

    Ida Sabriwas overwhelmed by tears assheentered her newhome,along with her

    husband Abdullah and young son Fadri.

    Shesaid:Iwas so stressed thinking about

    thehousebutthis is likea medicineforus.Wearevery thankfulto theBritish

    Red Cross and peoplein Britain for

    helping us.

    And this is justthebeginning.In 2007,1,900 further houses willbecompleted

    and financialsupportprovided to a further3,400 families in Indonesia.Thenext

    year willalso seeadditionalfinancial

    supportwork in up to 30 villages in SriLanka and thecompletion ofmorethan

    200 houses in theMaldives.

    Our firstaiders werealso ready to

    help atmorethan 10,000 publicevents

    throughouttheUK including theGreatNorth Run in Tyneside,where500

    volunteers helped nearly 1,000 casualtiesin a singleday.

    difference.InSussex,volunteerJillBartlett

    usedadefibrillatortobringamanback tolifeafterhecollapsedandstoppedbreathing.

    Shesaid:Itsanamazingthingtosave

    someoneslife,butIcouldnthavedoneitwithoutthehelpoftheRedCross.

    Wealso established a uniqueinclusive

    firstaid programme,specially designedto includegroups or individuals with

    disabilities.Over thenextthreeyears,

    wewillwork in partnership with otherorganisations to makefirstaid skills

    accessibleto all.

    Lessonslearned

    In recentyears,weresponded to severalmajor crises,including thetsunamiand

    London bombings,whosecomplex nature

    broughtparticular challenges to us as anemergency responseorganisation.

    Thats why,following reviews ofour

    responses,wehavebeen making

    improvements to our services so wecanbeeven better prepared to acteffectively

    nexttime.

    Afreshstart

    FromAfricatoIndonesiathroughtotheMiddleEast,thepast12monthsbrought

    severalcrisesthatdemandedanimmediate

    response.But2006wasalso ayearinwhichwehelpedcommunitiesacrosstheworld

    recoverfromearlierdisastersandrebuildtheirlives.

    Morethanoneyearonfromthe Pakistan

    earthquake,theRedCrossandRed

    CrescentMovementisstillverymuchtakingahands-onapproachbuilding 13,500

    newemergencysheltersandimproving

    healthcareforlocalcommunities.

    As thesecond anniversary ofthetsunamipassed,hundreds ofhigh-quality,

    earthquake-resistanthomes constructed

    In2006,wehelped365,900peopletoregaintheircoafterapersonalcrisis throughourindependentlivingcommunityequipmentservices,makinga differenceoftheirdaily lives.

    Morethan44,330refugeesandasylumseekers 34whomweredestitutereceivedemergencyassistanhelpfromus.

    I livealonewithnofamilynearme,sotheservicegraduallyenable

    toresumeanormallife.Themostimportantaspectwasgivingme

    confidencetodothis

    Respondingandrebuilding

    Lastyear,theBritish Red Cross oncemorefound itselfon thefrontline,responding tocrises both athomeand overseas.But2006

    was also a year for regeneration,duringwhich wehelped many communities acrosstheworld to recover fromdisasters andrebuild their lives.

    Inevitably,thenewyear broughtnewchallenges.A devastating earthquakehitIndonesias Java in May,killing thousands

    and prompting our immediateresponse.Working through theInternationalRedCross and Red CrescentMovement,weprovided emergency firstaid,food andshelter to thosecaughtup in thedisaster.

    When conflicterupted in theMiddleEast

    during thesummer,hundreds ofthousandsweredriven fromtheir homes.Dueto itstrusted neutralstatus,theMovementwasoneofthefew organisations given accessand wewereableto help.And in Africa,wherean already desperatesituation

    deteriorated further dueto droughtandongoing conflict,millions ofpeopleacrossthecontinentbenefited fromcontinuedRed Cross support.

    ReadyintheUK

    Herein theUK,we wereready to respondround theclock athundreds ofincidents

    across thecountry.In August,weofferedsupportwhen thousands ofpassengerswerestranded atHeathrowand Glasgow

    airports following a major security alert.And when severeflooding in theHighlandsleftscores ofpeoplestranded in November,

    our volunteers spenthours rescuing thosecutoffby theweather.

    Monday26JanuaryItwasdarkbutstillhot andstickywhenwearrivedatLungiairport,SierraLeonelastnight.ImtravellingwithAshSweeting,afreelancecameraman,andwereheretomakeshortfilmsabouttwoSierraLeoneRedCrossprogrammes.Oneiscommunityanimationandpeacesupport(CAPS),theotherischildadvocacyandrehabilitation(CAR).AftermeetingsattheRedCrossheadquarterswesetoffona five-hourjourneytoBo,where wewerestayingovernightbeforetravellingontoNiagorehun,aremoteruralcommunity.Itwasa bumpyjourneyinonof thevehiclesdonatedbyLandRover,mostofthe roadsarenttarmacandanythatare,are fullofpotholes.

    Tuesday27JanuaryWespentthewholedayfilmingthe CAPSprogrammeinNiagorehun.Theprogrammeencouragescommunitiestoworktogetherandbuildpeacethroughactivitiessuchascommunityfarmsandbuildingwells.Thevillagersgreeteduswithatraditionaldanceandsongandthenshowedus around.IimmediatelynoticedhowdifferentNiagorehunlookedtothevillageswedpassedthrough.Despitebeinginthemiddleofthebush,itwas spickandspan.Inmostcommunitiesinthisareayouseerubbishandcookingpotslyingaround,andclothesdryingonthegroundwhere theypickupgermsandcancauseillness.OntheCAPSprogrammepeoplelearnabouttheimportanceofkeepingtheenvironmentclean.OnewomanIspoketo, KadieSawaneh,saidhowmuchthehealthof thecommunityhadimprovedasaresultof theprogrammeandhowdiarrhoeaandscabiesarenolongerrife.

    Thursday29JanuarySpentthewholedayatthe CARcentreinKambiawhereIwasblownawayby the

    storiesIheard.Salamatu,18,toldme:Whentherebelsattackedtheykilledmyfather.Salamatuwasthencapturedandforcedtojointherebelsfortheremainderof thewar.Nowsheisat theCARcentreandtrainingtobecomeahairdresser.Salamatuplanstosetupabusinesssoshecansupporther youngsonHassanandherself.Iwasinaweof herspiritandbravery.

    Friday30JanuaryBackinFreetownforone lastinterviewwithEmmanuelTomy,secretarygeneral,oftheSierraLeoneRed Cross.IlovedwhathesaidabouttheannualpeacefestivalthattheRed Crossorganises:Itsachancetosingwithyour formerenemy,dancewithyourformerenemy.Itsnoteasy,butithashappened.

    Tuesday3FebruaryAfteracoupleof daysinLiberiascapitalMonrovia,ItravelledtoBongcounty,wheretheLiberiaRedCrossholdscommunity-basedhealthprogrammesinanumberofvillages.Todaywasan interestingdaywithdiscussionabouthandwashing,defecationandtheluxuryoftoilets.WevisitedMinicomFarmcommunity,whereBenshowedmearound,andtoldmehowthe threecommunallatrinestheRedCrossbuiltarehelping.Afterwards,heasked:Howmanypeopleinyourcountryhavetheirown toilet?Anoddconversationensued.Hecouldntbelieveeveryhouseholdhasatoilet,andthat evenunemployedpeoplecanaffordone.I'veusedenoughlong-dropsinAfricatorealisehowluckywe are.

    Wednesday4FebruaryIt'sbeenahotandhectic dayvisitingtheMonroviaCARprogramme.Thereare150kidsattheCAR centreandtheyjuststartedtheirten-monthcourselastweek.Itbeginswithliteracyandnumeracybeforetheylearnavocation,such ascarpentryorsoapmakingwhichispopularasit'seasy tomakealivingfrom. Ihungoutwiththekidsduringrecreationandthey lovedhavingtheirphotostaken.Butwhenitcameto talkingabouttheirexperiencesduringtheconflictandtheirdreamsforthe future,theybecamemuchmorewithdrawn.Inoticedahuge differencebetweenthesekidswhoarebeginningtheCARprogramme,andthoselikeSalamatu,inSierraLeone,whowerejustaboutto graduate.Youcouldtellthatthewholeprogrammefromthe counsellingtotheeducationandskillstraininghadgivenheranew confidenceinlife.Ifind,workingfor theRedCross,thatpeopleoftenaskme

    whetheraidworkactuallyworksandifdonationsreallyreach thoseinneed.Inthelasttwo weeksI'veheardsomanymoving storiesandseenintheeyesof thepeopleIhavemetjust howmuchdifferencetheorganisationmakes.
