Understanding Your Creative Rhythm
Our creative rhythms are unique to each one of us and expand and contract as we change throughout life.
As we learn new skills, our mind opens up to new possibilities, new ideas, and new patterns of thinking.
To help you understand your creative rhythm, I've broken it down into six steps.
Finding Your Rhythm
Honoring Your Rhythm
Mining Your Rhythm
Recovering Your Rhythm
Appreciating Your Rhythm
Acknowledging Your Rhythm
Finding Your Rhythm
Sometimes finding your rhythm is a lifelong process and often it is a changing one.
Creative rhythms transform and spiral as we grow. Our rhythm goes through a series of patterns as we journey through life.
When you find your rhythm, you will know because it is when you experience the feeling of flow.
Honoring Your Rhythm
Boundaries are key to managing your time and energy when working on creative projects.
Taking time to understand them and create healthy boundaries is vital for creativity to flourish.
Knowing when to plow ahead, when to take a rest, and when to move on are key factors in honoring your rhythm.
Mining Your Rhythm
Once you get a sense of where your rhythm lies and already have a good practice for honoring it, you can begin to cultivate your routines to help you build upon your skills and really play with various creative techniques.
When we mine our rhythm, we begin to build muscles that we can use for greater creative projects or for our long-term career choices.
Recovering Your Rhythm
One of the hardest challenges is recovering our creative rhythm after a life event or after we've allowed our rhythm to diminish.
To recover our rhythm is to recover from what is commonly known as a "block."
There are some strategies that can help.
Appreciating Your Rhythm
When you appreciate your creative rhythm, you lessen the chances of having to recover it.
Gratitude works wonders for mood and perspective and when applied to creativity can make you more resilient.
Acknowledging Your Rhythm
When we acknowledge our rhythm, we make known to ourselves when we experience our own individualized ebb and flow.
For some people this can look like seasonal creativity where we create in the spring, look for feedback in the summer and then showcase our work in the fall.
It is best to declare our differences and accept our rhythm for what it is. The best way to do this is to write a credo.
